Abstract

This article aims to investigate the studies about the implementation Augmented Reality (AR) in Education, particularly to have a closer look at the opportunities and challenges of AR application in Indonesian educational context. Finding of this study were analyzed through a synthesis research. The current empirical studies related to AR implementation in education were descriptively analyzed, and carefully synthesized. AR is one of the emerging technologies which has a big promise on teaching and learning. This study reveals that AR may offer a meaningful and engaging learning experiences because AR based learning can provide critical thinking activity with problem solving tasks. Furthermore, well-designed AR may situate a collaborative learning which can enhance students’ positive behavior and attitude. However, this essay also reveals some limitations of AR application need to be taken into consideration, especially when it comes to technological and learning issues. Consequently, AR may not be the ideal solution for all learning settings, yet the ongoing development of AR technology on handheld mobile devices offers a big optimism for future learning. It is highly expected that the vast development of AR may positively influence learning and become more significant in the future.

Abstract

The school curriculum of Indonesia has changed three times over the same period since 2004. Meanwhile the new curiculum of Philippine was changed in 2012.  This study attempted to compare Indonesia 2013 curriculum (K13) with Philippine curriculum K to 12 (K12) regarding their development and enacment while also uncovering the embedded cultural values and influences on both curricula. The discussion also tried to investigate how the two curricula have impacted different stakeholders involved.  This research was conducted by reviewing the collated official curriculum documents published by education ministry of the two countries and  analysing facts and issues emerged from related studies and articles. The study reveals that the similarity of both curricula reforms lies at the fact that both curricula are deliberately reformed in response to the actual needs of society in each country. Meanwhile, the difference might be seen from the lens of curricula purposes in which K13 was designed to strengthen social and religious values while K-12 was focused on the development of knowledge and skills. The findings suggest that Indonesian curriculum needs to be made more practical instead of being too philosophical while gradual and continuous evaluation in necessary aspects is more recommended than total reforms which tend to result in longer adaptation and transition process.

Abstract

As mathematics has been viewed for decades as a strereotyped male domain, gender differences in mathematics learning have received strong attention from scholars. This study, therefore, investigates the influences of gender differences on students’ performance in learning math in secondary school context. The study used a synthesis research. This method of research is undertaken by synthesizing any relevant studies in order to draw conclusion. Some empirical studies investigating the issues of gender difference and learning match were carefully analyzed and synthesized to draw the links between gender differences and secondary students’ academic achievements in learning math. The findings show that male students outperform female students in mathematics learning for three reasons. First, social gender stereotypes about students’ math ability may lead students to endorse math-gender stereotype themselves. This kind of stereotype makes male students more confident whereas female students become more anxious. Second, personality and spatial ability, as representors in mentality, have commonly been proven that another reason for the advantage of male students in mathematics education. The last is physical advantages in which current evidences suggest that males are more active in some brain areas which are related to mathematics ability. This essay highly recommends future research focus on physical reasons of gender difference in mathematics learning.

Abstract

This sociopragmatics study aims to investigate the various types of directive speech acts and the markers of local wisdom in the communication of elementary students in  Kolaka. The research design employed is qualitative descriptive, chosen for its ability to describe the types of directive speech acts and the manifestation of local wisdom within the context of elementary school students. The participants in this study consisted of elementary school students from Kolaka Regency. Data were collected through non-participant observation, and the analysis followed qualitative data procedures based on the interactive model developed by Miles and Huberman, which involved data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The findings revealed four types of directive speech acts commonly used by elementary school students: demanding, commanding, begging, and challenging. These directive speech acts were found to be influenced by the cultural context, specifically manifested through the use of clitics. The clitics -ko, -mi, -ka, -hae, and -na were identified as significant markers of the local wisdom in the communication of elementary students, observed in utterances such as lihatko, ayomi, pindahko, biarmi, siniko, and jemputna. These clitics not only serve as markers of cultural identity but also indicate different levels of politeness in communication.  Further implications for language teaching practices are also discussed.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the extent of ecological changes affecting the fishermen in the coastal area of Pomalaa District, Kolaka Regency, and how the local knowledge of the Bajo fishermen in Kolaka manifests. The results of the study indicate that the ecological changes in the coastal area are caused by massive nickel mining activities on the coast, which have an impact on the lives of fishermen in the coastal villages of Pomalaa District, namely Hakatutobu, Tambea, Sopura, and Oko-Oko villages. The forms of ecological changes are evident in the pollution of the environment in mangroves, seagrass beds, coral reefs, and other marine biota, even the damages to the community's fisheries cultivation such as sea cucumber, seaweed, and floating cage culture. The study also found that the Bajo fishermen's community is very dilemmatic in facing this reality, and there is no choice for fishermen other than to rely on their local knowledge, search for and catch marine products as their effort to meet their needs.

Abstract

This research investigates the perspectives of English teachers regarding the factors influencing the teaching and learning of English as a compulsory subject, specifically the English conversation course (Matakuliah Institusi), for non-English major students at Dayanu Ikhsanuddin University in Baubau. The study employed semi-structured interviews with six English teachers affiliated with the English study program at the university. By examining both positive and negative aspects, the research aimed to identify the factors that impact the quality of instruction and learning in the English conversation course. The findings highlight several factors, including the syllabus, availability of resources and equipment, students' attitudes and motivation towards learning English, participation in extracurricular activities, class size, institutional support, and teachers' enthusiasm. These factors were identified by the teachers as having both positive and negative influences on the course. Furthermore, the English teachers were given the opportunity to provide suggestions for program improvement, such as emphasizing the importance of support and commitment from the heads of each study program.
