The Western Pomeranians – attached to a traditional, native belief system – first encountered the crusade movement in the first half of the twelfth century, initially as its victims. Subsequently, the crusade ideas spread among the Western Pomeranian knights in the second half of the twelfth century as an element of the new, Christian culture. In the third stage, the region’s inhabitants became directly involved in the Fifth Crusade. In keeping with the historical methodology, the study is an attempt at a new, more comprehensive approach to the propagation of the crusade ideas in Western Pomerania and its effect on the locals. Also, the findings demonstrate that further research into the issue would be highly recommended.

The aim of the paper is to demonstrate the causes of this feud, its details, as well as the effects of individual decisions and actions taken by its participants. The article is an outcome of research, the significant part of which was the analysis of normative sources, including documents issued by Pomeranian dukes, the Knights Templar, bishops of Lebus and Kamień, as well as Brandenburg Margraves from the House of Ascania. It should be emphasised that the analysis of the papal bull issued by Nicholas IV in 1291 was crucial for preparing the article. As a result of the research, it was established that Bogislaw IV had good relations with the Knights Templar at least until July 1281. They deteriorated in 1282 as the Templars became closer to the Brandenburg Margraves, who competed with the duke for influence in the region. During the war of 1283 –1284 between the Margraves and the coalition of rulers and towns of North Germany and Pomerania, the Knights Templar supported the House of Ascania. This led to an outbreak of a long-standing conflict between the Order and Bogislaw IV, who raided the Templars’ commandery in Rurka twice, probably in 1284 and 1289. The second attack resulted in a complicated and turbulent trial that was instigated by a complaint that the Knights Templar from the German-Slavic Province submitted to Pope Nicholas IV. It was not possible to determine when exactly this conflict ended and what its consequences were.

XIII w. w czasie pontyfikatu biskupa Wawrzyńca (1209-1233).

They took possession of former dominions of the Templars, which was a consequence of decision made by the pope Clement V (the bull Ad providam of 2 May 1312) and the Treaty of Kremmen, that was concluded between the Hospitallers and Waldemar the Great, the Margrave of Brandenburg (29 January 1318). Commanderies of the brothers of Saint John, which were located in the Diocese of Lebus, were part of the Bailiwick of Brandenburg. The head of the administrative unit was a master, who was named Herrenmeister (sometimes also a bailiff or a preceptor). Demesnes were one of the mainstay of the high social status of masters of the Bailiwick of Brandenburg. They were complexes of landed which provided funds and material assets for bailiffs. The main aim of this article was to show the functioning of demesnes of masters the Bailiwick of Brandenburg in the area of the Bishopric of Lebus to the end of 15th century.

It was written, edited and approved during the synod in Troyes in January 1128 and included 72 articles referring to the most important issues for the Knights Templar. The content of the Latin Rule was clearly influenced by Bernard of Clairvaux as many of parts it resemble the Cistercian rule. The document was in force for over a decade. In 1140 it was supplemented with new content and translated into French. These changes led to the creation of a new Rule, known as the French rule, which brought the functioning of the Latin Rule to the end.

Since they had the protection of dukes and magnates, the Templars built numerous commanderies, at least the two of which were located on the Lebus Land. The activity of the Templars in Leśnica and Chwarszczany is certain, what is proved by the retained sources and monastery buildings existing in these places till the present times. Some traces lead us to a trail of another residence which might have been erected near the Lebus-Greater Poland border. This article presents the possible functioning of the lost Templar commandery in Sulęcin or Łagów.

Th... more This volume is devoted to the Knights Templar and Knights Hospitaller in the Diocese of Lebus. The principal aim of the publication is to present the political, economic and military activities of the orders, both of which left a lasting trace in the history of the Middle Oder region. The author shows the circumstances in which the Templars and the Hospitallers came to the Bishopric of Lebus, conducts a detailed analysis of their endowments and discusses the relationships between the orders and successive rulers in the region. In principle, the chronological scope of this work covers the period from 1229 to 1538. The year 1229 is a surmised date of the first endowment granted to the Knights Templar in the Bishopric of Lebus, whereas 1538 saw the Hospitallers of Brandenburg yield to the pressure of margrave John of Brandenburg-Küstrin and adopt Lutheranism. The time-frame mentioned in the title is formulated in a more general fashion, in view of the numerous references to events beyond the above dates. Thus, this volume constitutes yet another contribution to studies into the many-faceted nature of activities of military orders.
