Purpose-This article aims to review the technological and socioeconomic conditions which will inf... more Purpose-This article aims to review the technological and socioeconomic conditions which will influence the development of the mobile search market. Design/methodology/approach-An expert workshop with academics, industry representatives and market analysts was organised to discuss and analyse the results of an online survey of techno-economic and socioeconomic aspects concerning the evolution of mobile search. Findings-Despite clear positive signs, forecasted great expectations around mobile search are not yet supported by economic market evidence. Substantial development work for creating new applications ripe for the mass market is still needed, although there seems to be no fundamental technological barrier to that. Location-based services, augmented reality, real-time information search, and social network search and recommendations, have been identified as some of the key trends that may shape the future of mobile search. User demand for innovative mobile search-based applications is largely taken for granted, but experts lack a clear view on suitable business models that would allow for sustainable economic development. Originality/value-Innovating is not only inventing. Understanding what drives customers' willingness to use-and to pay for-a product or service is essential in order to design appropriate services and introduce these innovations to the market. There is a growing literature on mobile search-related technology, but the market context is largely unexplored.

This technology is key to increasing the competitiveness of the digital economy; thus it constitutes a strategic market for the European Union. The Enterprise Search Solution (ESS) market was worth close to 1,100 million USD (approximately 831 million EUR) in 2008 and is expected to grow quicker than the overall market for information and knowledge management systems (Gartner 2009). Optimistic market forecasts expect market size to exceed 1,900 million USD (approximately 1,435 million EUR) by the end of 2013. “Social networking sites” have gained unprecedented popularity in the recent years. Within such o... more “Social networking sites” have gained unprecedented popularity in the recent years. Within such online networks members can chat, interact with other members, contribute to forum discussions, share pictures, videos, music files or organise events. Some community websites comprise tens of millions of members from all continents. The creation of networks and their way of operating is becoming an emerging academic research topic in social sciences and its potential for commercial use is currently explored. The new modalities of large scale interaction, the huge size of communities, the immense broadness thematic topics and the fact that most users are youngsters (those who will shape the society in a few decades) are worthwhile investigating its potential for forward-looking studies. As a starting point, two major options for exploiting social networks for this purpose seem to emerge: one as an information source for "weak signals" of upcoming trends and the other one as a novel large-scale interactive tool that could be employed within foresight activities. With regard to the first one, communication exchange of thoughts and opinions amongst participants in the forums offers a formidable source of information and knowledge. This information becomes even more significant if juxtaposed against contributor profiles and behavioural patterns. In such way, emerging social trends might be detected. Similar approaches are already used in market research and could be transferred to forward-looking studies. Secondly, online social networks can be seen a unique tool for monitoring large interacting groups. In addition, the contents and they way a discussion process takes place can be traced back. In this paper, the authors aim at triggering thinking and discussion on the potential of this emerging phenomenon within forward-looking studies, rather than claiming to present conclusions. The authors will use Orkut as an example of a social network system.

The mobile sector is expanding rapidly with the number of worldwide subscribers estimated to reach 5 billions by 2012 and with two-digit growth rates in the number of mobile internet connections. Consequently, many observers consider mobile search as the 'next big market'. However, there is little evidence so far to support such high expectations. In addition, we spot a general lack of studies based on large public data sets, which employ reproducible methods to forecast the evolution of trends in the sector. Web search providers have developed a highly successful business model, which has rendered them a... more Web search providers have developed a highly successful business model, which has rendered them amongst some of the most profitable companies operating on the internet. Many observers regard mobile search as the next new big market. In contrast to search on PCs, however, the provision of search on mobiles is still in its infancy. In order to shed light on the real prospects of mobile search we performed a two-round Delphi exercise with experts, in which we included two innovative elements. First, the Delphi exercise included seven forward-looking scenarios for discussion. Then, the second round of the Delphi was carried out during a workshop with 19 of the original 61 participants involved. In this paper we present the findings from the discussions of this final round. Our study confirms the high expectations put into the mobile search market. We found that this optimism is rooted in the view that critical technological components are already available. Our paper argues that the technology push is not yet matched by a corresponding market pull. Web search engines, mobile phone manufacturers, and telecom operators are already starting to take action to place themselves in a favourable position. They are exploring trial applications, but business models are still unclear and companies are experimenting with very different approaches. Our Delphi study identifies interfaces as critical for increased mobile search usage. Moreover, experts think that perceived usefulness is valuable but trust is essential and that privacy should be seen as an opportunity rather than a constraint. The paper concludes with some suggestions for fostering innovation, growth and competitiveness in the mobile search domain by increasing the interoperability of services, assuring the openness and mash-ups of content and services, and developing personal identity data management systems to improve user acceptance and enhance trust.

Now, we are witnessing the first signs of evidence of what might become the explosion of mobile content and applications that will be shaping the (mobile) Internet of the future. Similar to the wired Internet, search will become very relevant for the usage of mobile Internet. Current research on mobile search has applied a limited set of methodologies and has also generated a narrow outcome of meaningful results. This article covers new ground, exploring the use and visions of mobile search with a users' interview-based qualitative study. Its main conclusion builds upon the hypothesis that mobile search is sensitive to a mobile logic different than today's one. First, (advanced) users ask for accessing with their mobile devices the entire Internet, rather than subsections of it. Second, success is based on new added-value applications that exploit unique mobile functionalities. The authors interpret that such mobile logic involves fundamentally the use of personalised and context-based services.

Search faces (at least) two major challenges. One is to improve the efficiency of retrieving rele... more Search faces (at least) two major challenges. One is to improve the efficiency of retrieving relevant content for all digital formats (images, audio, video, 3D shapes, etc). The second is to make relevant information retrievable in a range of platforms, particularly in high diffusion ones for mobiles. The two challenges are interrelated but distinct. This report aims to assess the potential of future Mobile Search. Two broad groups of search-based applications can be identified. The first group adapts and emulates web search processes and services to the mobile environment. The second is made up of services which exploit the unique features of mobile devices and mobile environments. Examples of these context-aware services include location-based services or interfacing to the internet of things (RFID networks).
The report starts by providing an introduction to mobile search. It highlights differences and commonalities with search technologies on other platforms (Chapter 1). Chapter 2 is devoted to the supply side of mobile search markets. It describes mobile markets, presents key figures and gives an outline of main business models and players. Chapter 3 is dedicated to the demand side of the market. It studies users’ acceptance and demand using the results of a case study in Sweden. Chapter 4 presents emerging trends in technology and markets that could shape mobile search. This vision was partly based on an analysis of forward-looking scenarios for mobile, developed by the authors and evaluated by experts in the field (Chapter 5). Another input was a questionnaire to which 61 experts responded. Drivers, barriers and enablers for mobile search were summarised in a SWOT analysis. The report concludes with some policy recommendations in view of the likely socio-economic implications of mobile search in Europe.
