Il presente volume costituisce gli atti del primo convegno tenutosi a Grotte di Castro (VT) nel m... more Il presente volume costituisce gli atti del primo convegno tenutosi a Grotte di Castro (VT) nel marzo 2023. Il convegno ha riunito molti studiosi di etruscologia che si sono confrontati sul tema dell’acqua in età etrusca. Vengono presentati casi studio dell’Etruria meridionale, legati all’uso dell’acqua, trattati da differenti prospettive (gestionali e idrauliche), con riferimento a diversi usi (agricoli, quotidiani, difensivi) e forme (naturali e culturali). Alcuni interventi hanno messo in evidenza le continuità storiche e il valore dell’insegnamento del passato per l’individuazione di soluzioni resilienti per il presente. Altri, infine, si sono soffermati sulle tematiche più generali, correlate al sistema idrogeologico, delle cavità e dei cambiamenti climatici.

Il primo numero della Collana accoglie gli atti dei due webinar promossi dalla Commissione per l’... more Il primo numero della Collana accoglie gli atti dei due webinar promossi dalla Commissione per l’Etica e l’Integrità nella Ricerca del Cnr e organizzati dal CID Ethics nei mesi di novembre 2020 (“Etica e trattamento dei resti umani in campo archeologico. Linee guida e codici deontologici tra ricerca, documentazione, tutela e valorizzazione”) e aprile 2021 (“Restituire il patrimonio archeologico. Questioni etiche e giuridiche”).
I webinar hanno riunito esperienze multidisciplinari al fine di mettere a confronto approcci metodologici e avanzamento dei lavori dei gruppi di studiosi coinvolti nella filiera della ricerca archeologica (scavo, documentazione, diagnostica, studio, edizione, valorizzazione), su due temi centrali: trattamento dei resti umani antichi e restituzione del Patrimonio archeologico. Nel volume sono inoltre raccolti i contributi di autorevoli personalità del mondo scientifico che hanno gettato le basi teoriche per lo sviluppo delle riflessioni.

This paper aims to present the panorama of the infants’ and subadults’ burials in the archaic and... more This paper aims to present the panorama of the infants’ and subadults’ burials in the archaic and classical period, in the territories of the neighbouring cities of Veii and Rome. The first paragraph presents
the aspects that characterise the funerary landscapes of Veii and Rome, highlighting both the common features, and the specificities that distinguish them. The most evident characteristic, which is found
in an area that crosses the borders of the two cities, assuming a sub-regional dimension, is the sudden decrease, from the mid-sixth century BC, in the number and quality of grave goods. Cremation is preferred
in Veii’s burials, keeping the ashes in ollas placed in a specific tomb structure (so-called “tomba a tramite”) while in Rome inhumation and cremation seem to coexist. The number of grave goods seems to increase again at the end of the fifth century, but in a new miniaturised form. In Rome, the funeral practice is regulated by the Laws of the Twelve Tables. In Veii, in the absence of direct sources, a sort of similar laws is hypothised. The motivations underlying these provisions seem to lie in the
desire to demonstrate a “ceremonial austerity”, a symptom of the radical modification of the ideology behind the funerary traditions of the two cities. The second paragraph presents four burials from the territory of Veii that meet the criteria set for this research, the result of both old excavations and recent acquisitions. These burials are discussed in the third paragraph, where the comparison with Rome is presented and the particular phenomenon of the suggrundaria is addressed, which is widespread in Lazio, without attestations in Veii. The conclusions of the work show how, in the selected territorial and chronological range, there is no evidence of a different specific treatment reserved for the deceased
up to the age of 18, compared to other contemporary burials in the same context.

They touched and themed several sensitive issues, such as the rules of social distancing and protective devices, the role of healthcare personnel, fake news, the relationship between human beings and nature and animals. They also examined human feelings and emotions, in particular the sense of worry and isolation along with the positive of resilience, solidarity and hope. The paper presents a selection of the richness of street art in Rome during the pandemic aiming to identify works by different authors and styles; this research is related to the project cnr Urban epigraphy. La complessità dei resti emersi nel corso delle indagini presso l'Ex Regio Ufficio Geologico in L... more La complessità dei resti emersi nel corso delle indagini presso l'Ex Regio Ufficio Geologico in Largo di Santa Susanna, in particolare nelle ultime due campagne di scavo (2009/2012) dirette dalla Soprintendenza Speciale per i Beni Archeologici di Roma (Funzionario Responsabile Mirella Serlorenzi) e coordinate dallo scrivente 1 , ha indotto ad operare, nel presente contributo, una suddivisione tra una prima parte di descrizione delle evidenze rimesse in luce, raggruppate per fase cronologica, e una seconda in cui verranno accennate le problematiche connesse ai ritrovamenti. Lo scavo si è concentrato nell'area nord orientale del salone centrale del Palazzo ( , nel livello compreso tra il pavimento del primo piano e il piano terra, corrispondente all'incirca alla quota di Largo di S. Susanna; il deposito stratigrafico è sopravvissuto alle manomissioni moderne in quanto utilizzato come orto del Convento di S. Maria della Vittoria fino alla realizzazione del Palazzo, quando è stato sigillato dal pavimento del primo piano 2 .
Il presente contributo non vuole riproporre un compendio dei ritrovamenti -recenti o meno -effett... more Il presente contributo non vuole riproporre un compendio dei ritrovamenti -recenti o meno -effettuati lungo la via Flaminia, in quanto lavori di sintesi di questo tipo sono già stati esaurientemente eseguiti da chi, per lunghi anni, si è occupato con passione e competenza della tutela e della valorizzazione del territorio in questione 2 . Ai fini della comprensione e della lettura del complesso in esame si è ritenuto maggiormente utile tentare una breve ricostruzione del paesaggio antico nei suoi sviluppi, dalle età più remote fino agli anni più recenti, partendo proprio dai dati di scavo raccolti nell'edito e cercando di accennare ai principali problemi affrontati finora nella letteratura scientifica. Per l'età moderna e contemporanea i dati presentati sono il risultato di ricerche d'archivio. Allo scopo poi di fornire un quadro sintetico delle presenze archeologiche nella zona, si riporta, al termine del contributo, un breve catalogo dei dati a disposizione, delimitando geograficamente il campo alle evidenze connesse al tracciato della via Flaminia tra il V e il VI miglio; il taglio operato, certamente arbitrario e non legato al riconoscimento di distinzioni topografiche, si è reso però indispensabile soprattutto per l'età classica, alla luce del cospicuo numero di informazioni a disposizione su questo quadrante del suburbio di Roma.

The contribution aims to propose some reflections on the funerary ideologies of the Etruscans, wi... more The contribution aims to propose some reflections on the funerary ideologies of the Etruscans, with specific reference to the period between the 9th and the 5th centuries BC. Ritual practices of inhumation and cremation, together with the relative solutions adopted to safeguard the dead’s remains in their passage into the afterlife, will be compared. Among the various examples, the article will consider the cases in which the cinerary urns with anthropo- morphic characteristics were used: they substituted in some way the body of the deceased after his final metamorphosis.

This essay presents some notes about the research ethics on Cultural Heritage, with spe- cial ref... more This essay presents some notes about the research ethics on Cultural Heritage, with spe- cial reference to the cases of presence of ancient human remains in the exhibition contexts. Firstly, it provides an essential introduction to the history of the discipline and an overview of the progress of the research, of the publications, and of recent projects on these related to the topic. It then discusses cases such as the «golden parade of the Pharaohs» (that is, the sumptuous staging of the transfer of 22 mummies from the old to the new museum at the Cairo); the solutions carried out for the exhibition of the burial «Ostuni 1» in the Museum of Preclassical Civilizations of Southern Murgia (a 20-year-old pregnant woman who died before giving birth to her child and was buried with the fetus still in her womb); and the ex- hibition on the tomb 12 from the excavations in Fioranello (Rome), as part of the exhibition «Patrimonium Appiae. Depositi Emersi», held at the Casale di Santa Maria Nova (a skeleton with an apparent anomaly actually due to the post-depositional phenomenon). Finally, the article engages with the design for the new layout of the Oliveriano Archaeological Museum of Pesaro and, in particular, with the display of the burial remains excavated at Novilara by Brizio at the end of the nineteenth century.

The paper concerns the discovery in 2016, in the archives of the National Etruscan Museum of Vill... more The paper concerns the discovery in 2016, in the archives of the National Etruscan Museum of Villa Giulia, of the un- published manuscript signed by Fausto Benedetti in 1903, with the description of the excavations carried out by him self and his father Annibale, in the necropolis of Monte Michele in Veii. The manuscript helps in the reconstruction of the controversial events surrounding the excavation and will allow to re-examine the publication written by Mauro Cristofa- ni in the 1969, dedicated to the grave goods from Monte Michele in the National Archaeological Museum of Florence.

Parla l'archeologia" (www.romarche.it)-un progetto culturale annuale che dal 2010 coniuga l'archeologia, l'antropologia e la museologia all'editoria specializzata-in programma a Roma dal 16 al 18 giugno prossimi. Il tema scelto per questa edizione mira, dunque, a indagare l'intricata relazione, da sempre al centro della riflessione filosofica, tra Natura e Cultura, concetti dicotomici in continua interazione, tanto da far sì che a un certo punto l'antropologia abbia concepito l'entità naturale come un'invenzione culturale. Un intreccio, quello fra i due attori sociali, che appare quasi inestricabile e a cui si aggiunge la considerazione che il rapporto con la Natura appare oggi come una questione "politica" nel senso etimologico del termine: in una società cosmopolita il rapporto con l'ambiente naturale concerne la visione stessa del mondo. È urgente perciò un ripensamento del binomio uomo/ essere culturale e natura/ambiente neutro. The recent archaeological discoveries made in the north-western qua- drant of Rome, within the am... more The recent archaeological discoveries made in the north-western qua- drant of Rome, within the ambit of so-called ‘emergency archaeology’, make it possible to put knowledge into practice in a subject area which stimulates intense academic debate: the territory between Veii and Rome, in the period between the Archaism and the final conquest of the Etruscan city. The data available until now that have been employed in the reconstruction of settlement dynamics come almost exclusively from funerary contexts. The archaeological evidences–pertaining to residential structures–are rare and sporadic, although gradually increasing. The case illustrated here of the excavation in the Lucchina area (Via Trionfale,Ottavia)representsarareopportunitytoexaminea‘border’cultureindepththrough information provided by investigations–still under way–into a complex of Etruscan-Veian dwellings: houses with a tripartite layout of which there remain the bases in tufa blocks and collapsed tiles. In the necropolis, on the other hand, a tomb is being investigated of the Veian type a estibolo or a traite, with access steps and three loculi (two for cremations and one for inhumation) which have yielded a rich funerary equipment. A Veian community, then, providing evidence of the phenomenon of ‘internal colonisation’ of the suburb of the city so close to the border with Rome.

The Etruscan site of Acquafredda, situated in the southeastern territory of Veii, at the border w... more The Etruscan site of Acquafredda, situated in the southeastern territory of Veii, at the border with the land dominated by Rome, was excavated about forty years ago and has recently been the subject of new investigations. The paper aims at summarizing the history of studies dedicated to the site, integrating it with the results of new excavations, and critically discussing some recent hypotheses about the chronology and function of the settlement.
