provide its members with a pl... more The rehearsals of amateur Bulgarian folklore dancing groups abroad
provide its members with a place for meeting and communication and play a significant social role in the lives of the emigrants. With the Covid-19 epidemic and the implementation of anti-epidemic regulations in a number of European countries, the gatherings in dancing halls became impossible. The article explores how different dance formations managed to transfer their activity and communication online in a situation of imposed social isolation. The text is self-reflexive, as the
author participated directly in the events described. Various virtual communication models that allow the amateur groups to continue performing their tasks in crisis conditions are presented. The described phenomena show the ability of these groups to quickly reorganize and adapt to emergency situations. The analysis also points to the important place which these groups occupy in the lives of Bulgarian emigrants.

With its fifth edition in 2019, the festival ‘Na Megdana na Drugata Bulgaria’ (At the Public Squa... more With its fifth edition in 2019, the festival ‘Na Megdana na Drugata Bulgaria’ (At the Public Square and Gathering Point of the Other Bulgaria) establishes itself as one of the main events for Bulgarian emigrants in Europe. It gathers folklore enthusiasts and besides a dancing stage, it is a ground for new friendships, meetings, and exchange of expertise. The article examines the festival as a place of contact of informal migration-based groups of interest and as a trigger for developing an imagined community around symbols such as origin, clothes, music, dance and food. The ‘megdan’ is considered a community centre existing mainly in people’s mind but not as a geographic location. The article searches for the link between the event and the ways of preserving and transmitting cultural heritage in migration. The study was conducted in three stages: a preliminary online survey; fieldwork in the period May 10 – 12, 2019 in La Nucia, Spain; an additional digital data gathering.

According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), over a billion people live and w... more According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), over a billion people live and work outside their home countries. In 2020, an estimated 281 million international migrants resided in countries other than their own, a significant increase from previous decades. Europe and Asia host the largest shares, while migration's impacts on families left behind remain a growing concern. While it provides economic benefits, such as remittances, it also imposes social costs on families left behind. Migrants also navigate identity dilemmas, transnational family ties, and integration challenges, often facing stigma and insecurity. This volume, part of the “Still in Bulgaria. Cultural and Social Effects of Labour Mobility and Migration on Bulgarian Society (1990-2019)” project, explores migration’s effects across history, covering national connectivity, family challenges, stigma, and evolving transnational communities. Migrations reshape home, culture, and identity, creating both opportunities and challenges for those who move and those who are left behind.

In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic challenges, new fields of study are intertwining and emerging to explore the causes, responses, prevention, coping, and consequences of this worldwide infectious disease affecting all sectors of society at global, regional, and local scales. Analytical frameworks and solutions are inquired through interdisciplinary approaches researching past and present impacts of similar sociocultural, economic, and political phenomena. These efforts contribute to the new anthropological subfield – the Anthropology of pandemics and seek to understand how people experience and respond to pandemics in general and this particular one, but also how pandemics shape society and culture, and how they reveal social and cultural inequalities in our world. As a result of researchers’ joint efforts, people’s beliefs, values, and practices, forming their understanding of disease and their response to it, have been examined. This collection is the result of the International Conference ‘Between the Worlds: Narratives and Notions of Pandemics’ held on 7 and 8 June 2022 in Sofia, Bulgaria. The editors of the volume consider it a serious challenge to integrate and organise together so many different texts, methodological approaches, and the opinions of 24 scholars – philosophers, psychologists, historians, ethnologists, anthropologists, and economists from different schools and scientific traditions.

Тяхното опазване и популяризиране се разглежда като съвкупност от процеси, свързани с националното законодателство в областта на културното наследство, с приоритетите в общински политики и с разпознаването им като част от историята, културата и идентичността на местните общности. Фокусът на изследването е поставен върху проблемите, касаещи грижата за тези културни паметници и развитието им като туристически ресурси, които биха имали положително влияние върху икономическото и демографско развитие на регионите.

Сборникът „Съвременни теренни изследвания на културноисторическото наследство“ е резултат от дейн... more Сборникът „Съвременни теренни изследвания на културноисторическото наследство“ е резултат от дейността на учени от Института за етнология и фолклористика с Етнографски музей при Българска академия на науките. Те са обединени в работна група „Теренни изследвания“ в рамките на Националната научна програма „Културноисторическо наследство, национална памет и обществено развитие“.
В общия фокус на тематичното разнообразие на сборника са теренните изследвания. Работата на терен има различни времеви и пространствени измерения и включва разнообразни методи и техники като дълбочинно интервю, наблюдение, аудио и видеодокументиране и др. Тя е съпроводена с изучаване на архивни документи, закони, медийни и интернет публикации, както и с вече направени научни изследвания. По този начин се задълбочава и разширява научното познание по съответните проблеми. При всички представени изследвания, теренната работа обхваща продължителен период от време, а резултатите от нея са основа за проследяване на процеси, сравнение и развитие на теоретични концепции.
Съставители на сборника са Йелис Еролова, Петьо Кръстев и Юлия Попчева, а автори освен тях са още Вихра Баева, Еля Цанева, Ивайло Първанов, Анна Щърбанова, Галин Георгиев, Магдалена Славкова, Галина Луканова, Ваня Иванова, Николай Михайлов и София Бисеринска.
Изданието е реализирано с финансовата подкрепа на Министерството на образованието и науката на Република България по Национална научна програма „Културноисторическо наследство, национална памет и обществено развитие“, одобрена с Решениена Министерски Съвет № 577 от 17 август 2018 г.
