Sufficiency in terms of TPACK (Technology, Pedagogy and Content Knowledge) is among the basic conditions for being qualified teachers. For this reason, activities for teacher candidates' TPACK development should be involved in teacher training activities. TPACK expresses a combined knowledge, so complex activities should be consulted to increase this accumulation of knowledge. Calismanin orneklemini Balikesir ilinde bir Anadolu Lisesinde ogrenim gormekte olan 11 kiz, 11 erkek ogrenci ile bir Saglik Meslek lisesinde ogrenim gormekte olan 19 kiz ve 5 erkek toplam 48 ogrenci olusturmaktadir. Recent research on the subject shows that students spend more time on computer games than other a... more Recent research on the subject shows that students spend more time on computer games than other activities such as reading book or watching TV. It is possible that this time-consuming activity can become much more effective by educator-game sector cooperation. Which type of game students prefer mostly; how the educational content can be articulated the games without diminishing the playability and enjoyableness of it; and the impact of the competition in the games on process and students are just several titles examined in the studies. This scope presents the types of computer game, qualities of educational games, and educational games designs which are recommended for developing educational games. It also presents a set of knowledge about the importance of educational games in mathematics and physic education, and some studies on this field. In the scope, some strategies, about educational game development process, are recommended educators and software developers in the sector who intend to develop educational games based on the literature.

The study was conducted through document analysis being a method of qualitative research. In the study, a total of 152 learning outcomes-75 from the fifth grade and 77 from the sixth grade-were examined based on the Revised Bloom's Taxonomy which is depicted as a two-dimensional categorization representing the knowledge and the cognitive process. The data were analyzed using descriptive analysis method. The general results of the analyzes indicated that the learning outcomes examined in this study were usually related to the procedural knowledge category of the knowledge dimension and the understand and apply categories of the cognitive process dimension. The Effects of a Computer-Assisted Teaching Material, Designed According to the ASSURE Instructional Design and the ARCS Model of Motivation, on Students’ Achievement Levels in a Mathematics Lesson and Their Resulting Attitudes

This study examined the effects that computer-assisted instruction had on students' attitudes tow... more This study examined the effects that computer-assisted instruction had on students' attitudes toward a mathematics lesson and toward learning mathematics with computer-assisted instruction. The computer software we used was based on the ASSURE Instructional Systems Design and the ARCS Model of Motivation, and the software was designed to teach fractions to fourth-grade students. The skill levels of these students were gauged before and after receiving the computer-assisted instruction. We structured our experimental design to use one group for both pre-and post-tests, which is considered to be one of the weak experimental designs. We conducted our research with 28 students studying in Balıkesir, Turkey, for a period of six weeks, using the specifically developed teaching material. We gathered our research data by applying an attitude scale to our mathematics lesson and to computer-assisted instruction. We also applied the Academic Achievement Test for Fractions Unit in Mathematics, a test we developed for our research. We analyzed our gathered data with the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test (n<30) by using the statistical software SPSS 15. The conducted analyses showed that the activities of the developed instructional material had positively affected the attitude of the students toward computer-assisted instruction (z=-2.807, p< 0.05) and increased their academic success (z=-4.623, p<0.05). Although the attitude scale toward our mathematics lesson indicated an increase in their scores, this increase was not found statistically significant (z=-2.807, p>0.05). Based on the research results, we believe that similar materials can also be used for instructing other topics of mathematics, and similar computer-assisted activities can be developed for other courses.

Computer Assisted Educational Material Preparation for Fourth Grade Primary School Students’ English Language Class in Teaching Numbers

In this study, using ADDIE instructional design model, it is aimed to prepare English language ed... more In this study, using ADDIE instructional design model, it is aimed to prepare English language educational material for 4 th grade primary students to teach them numbers. At the same time, ARCS model of motivation's attention, relevance and satisfaction phases are also taken into consideration. This study also comprises of Design Based Research which includes design, theory and application processes. The first phase of the ADDIE method is the analysis where there is a discussion with primary school English language teachers so as to determine the topic, the content and the target groups. During the design phase; objectives, strategies, activities, assessments, and methods of learning are determined to organize and present the content on the basis of learning objectives. In the development phase; images, animations and user interface are created in accordance with students' ages. Additionally, sounds including the pronunciation of digits and numbers are created and the codes of the visual scenarios that are designed are written in ActionScript 2.0 in Adobe Flash CS3 Professional. At the implementation phase, some of the target group students are tested with prototype material that has been implemented. In the classroom, students learn both the pronunciation and the spelling of the numbers. After checking their spelling and typing errors of numbers with quizzes, the students repeat what they have learned and then they take the spelling quizzes. The program checks the misspelled words. Students who correctly complete the quizzes are entitled to have one flag. And when they have all the flags (4 flag), they receive a certificate of achievement. With this rewarding technique, it is intended to raise the motivation of the students. Finally, at the evaluation step, the observed problems in the materials are revised. Öz: Bu çalışmada, üç boyutlu sanal ortamlardan biri olan Second Life ortamında beş aşamalı modeli... more Öz: Bu çalışmada, üç boyutlu sanal ortamlardan biri olan Second Life ortamında beş aşamalı modelin uygulanması ve etkililiğinin belirlenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Bu amaca ulaşmak için; kullanıcılara oryantasyon eğitimi verilmiş, eğitsel amaçlı bir çalışma ortamı hazırlanması sağlanmış, hazırlanan ortamda eğitim-öğretim aktiviteleri yapılarak katılımcıların ortamdaki deneyimleri hakkında görüşleri alınmıştır. Çalışmada nitel araştırma yöntemlerinden durum çalışması benimsenmiştir. Günlük, görüşme ve gözlem araçları kullanılarak toplanan veriler, beş aşamalı modelin aşamalarına göre analiz edilmiştir. Araştırmanın çalışma grubunu 2010-2011 akademik yılı bahar döneminde Balıkesir Üniversitesi, Necatibey Eğitim Fakültesi, BÖTE Bölümü ikinci sınıf öğrencilerinden araştırma için gerekli koşulları sağlayan ve çalışmaya gönüllü olarak katılan 19 öğrenci oluşturmaktadır. Araştırma kapsamında günlük ve görüşme ile elde edilen veriler içerik analizi ile çözümlenmiştir. İçerik analizinden elde edilen veriler, gözlem verileri ile desteklenmiştir. Katılımcıların ortamı etkin bir şekilde kullanabildiği, ortamı benimsediği, ortamda sosyalleştikleri, etkili ve rahat bir şekilde kendilerini ifade edebildikleri, bilgi paylaşımları ile yapılan çalışmalarla ürünler ortaya koydukları elde edilen sonuçlar arasındadır. Ayrıca, katılımcıların öğrendikleri bilgileri yapılandırdıkları ve ortamdaki faaliyetlerini gerçek yaşantılarıyla ilişkilendirdikleri, dolayısıyla, beş aşamalı modelin tüm basamaklarını başarılı bir şekilde gerçekleştirdikleri sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. Abstract: The main purpose of the current study was to examine the utility and effectiveness of five stage model in one of the three dimensional environments called second life. To help meet the purpose, users received orientation, a work environment has been established, learning activities took place in this environment and the users' views were received. Case study, a qualitative research method, was used in this study through using diary, conducting interviews and making observations, data were analyzed in light of five stage model. The participants were 19 pre-service teachers studying in Balıkesir University-Necatibey Faculty of Education's department of computer education and instructional technology in 2010-2011 academic years' spring semester. The participation was voluntary. Diaries were examined through content analysis technique. Data obtained from this technique were supported from data gathered from observations. The findings revealed that the participants found the environment effective, easy to use, and a place that enabled them to socialize and to express themselves confidently. In addition, they constructed their own knowledge, and connected it with real life; therefore, they achieved all of the stages of five stage model.

The purpose of this research is to determine the differences of attitudes of students, who played... more The purpose of this research is to determine the differences of attitudes of students, who played the educational computer games developed for this research, towards both mathematics course and educational computer games. For this reason, researchers developed two educational computer games, Proportional Tetris and Proportional Clown, which are about ratio and proportion topic in mathematics education. Researchers used a survey including a demographic data form and two likert-like scales about both mathematics course and educational computer games. Educational computer games and the survey were applied to 176 students in two primary schools in Balikesir, Turkey. Whether educational computer games affected the students' attitudes towards both mathematics course and educational computer games was tested with Paired Samples t test. Whether there is a meaningful relationship between students' attitudes towards mathematics course and students' attitudes towards educational computer games was tested with Pearson Correlation test. As a result, students' attitudes towards both mathematics course and educational computer games became positive. But there wasn't any change in attitudes of students who played Proportional Tetris and Proportional Clown.
