In this paper, the authors propose a novel system that uses human pulse detection to ensure that the bike rider is wearing helmet. A breath alcohol sensor is used to detect the possibility of drunken riding. The proposed system is designed such that the vehicle can start only when permission signal is received from intelligent helmet node via RF receiver. The system also has a vehicle fall detection feature implemented using vibration sensors. By integrating the system with GPS for vehicle live location and connecting it via cellular mobile network with emergency contact numbers, we increase the chances for timely aid to bike rider. The system ensures that messages carrying the live location of the vehicle fall are immediately sent to emergency contact numbers programmed in the proposed system via GSM module. The emergency messages (such as SMS) are sent continuously until an acknowledgement is received to ensure on-time medical assistance. The system was successfully tested and found to be an effective solution for improving rider safety and thus contributes immensely towards safer riding.

This promises many new applications for sustainable and smart cities. Vehicular pollution tracking and control is a challenge in modern cities. In the previous works, researchers have proposed various network based solutions for monitoring of air quality in cities. However, majority of these works do not include vehicular pollution monitoring. There is a need for a quick, reliable, low cost system for vehicular pollution tracking. In this regard, Internet of Things (IoT) integrated Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is a promising solution for vehicular pollution tracking and control. This paper presents a novel and cost-effective RFID based three stage intelligent communication system for tracking and notification of vehicles causing pollution. The system has an RFID based smart sensor node equipped with carbon monoxide and methane gas sensors. The sensor data is written in RFID tag by Arduino Uno controlled RFID writer. RC522 RFID reader/ writer module used in this work is low cost and supports quick (848 kbaud data transfer speed) and secure data transmission. A raspberry pi microcomputer is programmed as exhaust monitoring and data forwarding gateway node. It reads the unique sensor node RFID tag via the attached RFID reader. The sensor information received by the gateway node is communicated via WiFi to thingSpeak server for each vehicle. The thingSpeak server stores and displays the information and sends automatic twitter notification to the vehicle owner's account. The rules for notification can easily be configured at the remote server as per needs. By integrating RFID based vehicular pollution monitoring system with social networking platform twitter, we increase the chances for effective persuasive influence and control for vehicular pollution. To date, this unique and synergistic combination of cloud and twitter integrated RFID based vehicular pollution monitoring and control has not been proposed. The system was successfully tested and found to be an effective, convenient and economical solution for improved vehicular pollution monitoring. The low cost of the developed RFID based sensor nodes make the deployment of the system on a large scale feasible, particularly for developing countries.

The emergence of two new technologies, namely Bluetooth and MPEG-4, is likely to prove useful in implementing VoW. Video transmission over a wireless channel can be made possible by transmitting MPEG-4 bit streams over Bluetooth channels. The paper addresses this aspect, and proposes three implementations - MPEG-4 over Bluetooth (MPEG4BT) via HCI, MPEG4BT via L2CAP and MPEG4BT via IP over Bluetooth.

This in turn has led to development of various unequal error protection (UEP) schemes. In this paper, the performance of optimized 2-layered and 3-layered UEP schemes using hierarchical 64 QAM (64-HQAM) for wavelet-transformed images coded with set partitioning in hierarchical trees (SPIHT) algorithm and transmitted over additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel is investigated. A look-up table (LUT) based approach to select the optimal values of modulation parameters of 64-HQAM for different channel conditions is suggested so as to reduce the computational complexity. Simulation results show that 3-layered optimized 64-HQAM-based UEP outperforms corresponding non-optimized UEP. Also, 3-layered optimized UEP scheme using 64-HQAM performs slightly better as compared to optimized 2-layered UEP scheme using 64-HQAM.

Video transmission over Terrestrial Trunked Radio (TETRA) mobile channel employing MPEG-4 visual ... more Video transmission over Terrestrial Trunked Radio (TETRA) mobile channel employing MPEG-4 visual coding standard is proposed in this paper. Detail parameters of the proposed systems are discussed in this paper. Performance of the proposed systems was evaluated in Average Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (APSNR) versus Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) and Bit Error Rate (BER). In particular, the video quality that can be achieved at different channel conditions and employing different combinations of MPEG-4 visual error resilient tools is presented in this paper. Results obtained show that higher video bitrate does not necessarily lead to higher video quality at the receiver as the received video quality depends on the bit error pattern or the number of error free video packets.

Thus, in such systems and networks, the received signal is not only limited by noise but - especially with increasing symbols rate often more significantly by the intersymbol interference (ISI) caused by the time dispersive radio channels such as those are used in this work. This paper deals with the study of the performance of detector for high bit rate transmission on some worst case models of frequency selective fading channels for outdoor mobile radio environments. This paper deals with a number of different wireless channels with different power profiles and different number of resolvable paths. All the radio channels generated in this paper are for outdoor vehicular environments with Doppler spread of 100 Hz. A carrier frequency of 1800 MHz is used and all the channels used in this work are such that they are useful for next generation w...

Performance of Some detectors for the outdoor mobile radio channels
High transmission bit rate in futuristic mobile channels gives rise to severe inter-symbol interf... more High transmission bit rate in futuristic mobile channels gives rise to severe inter-symbol interference (ISI) and this makes the detection task very challenging. Thus a smart detector such as near maximum likelihood detector (NMLD) is needed and is the subject of study in this paper. Performance assessment of near-optimal NMLD over such channels assumes great importance. This paper deals with the detection of data in the presence of noise and ISI with two types of detectors viz. NMLD and nonlinear equalizer (NLE). Performance improvement of NMLD, as compared to nonlinear equalization, has been assessed in terms of bit error rate (BER) versus signal to noise ratio (SNR) curves obtained through computer simulation. The aim of this paper is to take a number of different cases of severely distorted mobile radio channels for outdoor vehicular environment and then to investigate the performance of detectors in the receivers.

The authors believe that English used in texting causes a lack of comprehension for English speakers, learners, and texters. Wei, Xian-hai and Jiang (2008:3) declare "In Netspeak, there are some newly-created vocabularies, which people cannot comprehend them either from their partial pronunciation or from their figures." Crystal (2007:23) claims; "variation causes problems of comprehension and acceptability. If you speak or write differently from the way I do, we may fail to understand each other." In this paper, the authors conducted a questionnaire at Aligarh Muslim University to ninety respondents from five different Faculties and four different levels. To measure respondents' comprehension of English texting, the authors gave the respondents abbreviations used by texters and asked them to write the full forms of the abbreviations. The authors found that many abbreviations were not understood, which suggested that most of the respondents did not understand and did not use these abbreviations.
