This paper introduces an effective technique for the compression of one-dimensional signals using... more This paper introduces an effective technique for the compression of one-dimensional signals using wavelet transforms. It is based on generating a binary stream of 1s and 0s that encodes the wavelet coefficients structure (i.e., encodes the locations of zero and nonzero coefficients). A new coding algorithm, similar to the run length encoding, has been developed for the compression of the binary stream. The compression performances of the technique are measured using compression ratio (CR) and percent root-mean square difference (PRD) measures. To assess the technique properly we have evaluated the effect of signal length, threshold levels selection and wavelet filters on the quality of the reconstructed signal. The effect of finite word length representation on the compression ratio and PRD is also discussed. The technique is tested for the compression of normal and abnormal electrocardiogram (ECG) signals. The performance parameters of the proposed coding algorithm are measured and compression ratios of 19:1 and 45:1 with PRDs of 1% and 2.8% are achieved, respectively. At the receiver end, the received signal is decoded and inverse transformed before being processed. Finally, the merits and demerits of the technique are discussed.

ABSTRACT Successful measurement of object shape using projected fringe patterns depends on variou... more ABSTRACT Successful measurement of object shape using projected fringe patterns depends on various factors, most importantly in the final stage of relating the measured unwrapped phase distribution to the object height. Although various phase-to-height models exist in the literature, the different approaches employ numerous assumptions and simplifications which could render the derived model inaccurate or very sensitive to parameter variations. In this paper, the phase-to-height model presented by Rajoub et al (2005 J. Opt. A: Pure Appl. Opt. 7 368–75) will be extended to work with systems using non-collimated projections of fringe patterns. The true (or physical) spatial phase distribution existing over the object&#39;s surface as a result of the projected fringe pattern is first calculated using projector-to-object ray tracing. The camera image of the object&#39;s shape is then obtained through image mapping transformations assigning the pixels with intensities that correspond to the previously calculated 3D spatial phase. This mapping combined with the previously calculated spatial phase provides us with the expression that relates the phase as seen by the camera to the object&#39;s height. Unlike existing approaches, the proposed approach is universal in the sense that it is not restricted to certain optical arrangements and does not rely on oversimplified geometries. Therefore, it will be very useful in helping us understand the various effects of system parameters on the measurement outcome.

In this paper, we use thermal imaging to monitor the periorbital region's thermal variations and test whether it can offer a discriminative signature for detecting deception. We start by presenting an overview on automated deception detection and propose a novel methodology, which we validate experimentally on 492 thermal responses (249 lies and 243 truths) extracted from 25 participants. The novelty of this paper lies in scoring a larger number of questions per subject, emphasizing a within-person approach for learning from data, proposing a framework for validating the decision making process, and correct evaluation of the generalization performance. A k-nearest neighbor classifier was used to classify the thermal responses using different strategies for data representation. We report an 87% ability to predict the lie/truth responses based on a within-person methodology and fivefold cross validation. Our results also show that the betweenperson approach for modeling deception does not generalize very well across the training data.

The effects of signal length, finite word length representation of the wavelet coefficients and threshold levels selection on the quality of the reconstructed signal that is measured on PRD and compression ratio measures are investigated. The technique is tested for the compression of normal and abnormal ECG signals extracted from MIT-BIH database. The performance parameters of the proposed coding algorithm are measured and a compression ratio of 23.5:l with a PRD of 1.53% is achieved.

The process of shape measurement consists of various stages, starting with the projection of structured light patterns and ending with the conversion of the measured phase of the captured intensity images to the required object height. Although various phase-to-height models exist in the literature, these models are usually restricted to a certain optical arrangement dedicated by the system components. Furthermore, the different approaches adopted in deriving these models employ numerous assumptions in order to simplify the analysis. This could make the derived models very sensitive to parameter variations of the model inputs. This paper presents a new approach for deriving the analytic phase-to-height model. This approach is not restricted to the system&#39;s geometry nor to the type of structured light projection employed. Therefore, it will allow us to better understand the various effects of system parameters on the measurement accuracy.

The ECG signal is first preprocessed, the discrete wavelet transform (DWT) is then applied to the preprocessed signal. Preprocessing guarantees that the magnitudes of the wavelet coefficients be less than one, and reduces the reconstruction errors near both ends of the compressed signal. The DWT coefficients are divided into three groups, each group is thresholded using a threshold based on a desired energy packing efficiency. A binary significance map is then generated by scanning the wavelet decomposition coefficients and outputting a binary one if the scanned coefficient is significant, and a binary zero if it is insignificant. Compression is achieved by 1) using a variable length code based on run length encoding to compress the significance map and 2) using direct binary representation for representing the significant coefficients. The ability of the coding algorithm to compress ECG signals is investigated, the results were obtained by compressing and decompressing the test signals. The proposed algorithm is compared with direct-based and wavelet-based compression algorithms and showed superior performance. A compression ratio of 24:1 was achieved for MIT-BIH record 117 with a percent root mean square difference as low as 1.08%.
