Catch me on The Daily Show.

Earlier this year, I published my second book, Mỹ Documents. It’s a work of fiction but Verge readers will recognize a lot of things we’ve covered here: the Department of Homeland Security, the legacy of the Vietnam War, and how Google has warped the incentives of the internet. If you want to know more about a novel full of Verge themes (should my next book be about a morally bankrupt FCC chairman?), you can see me talking about it with Ronny Chieng on The Daily Show. Clip below!

It’s Bandcamp Friday, and you know what that means...

All proceeds go directly to the artist. Bandcamp started skipping its cut on the first Friday of the month in 2020, and it’s turned into something of a tradition.

It doesn’t run the promotion every month anymore (there’s no Bandcamp Friday in November), but it will return on December 5th.

Backbone’s great phone controllers, now dipped in cutesy colors.

Backbone’s controllers are some of the best around for mobile gaming. Now, they’re in some fresh, new colors exclusively at Target. The $169.99 Pro is pretty in pink, while the $99.99 One comes clad in purple. Both work with USB-C phones, but only the Pro has a battery and Bluetooth support.

Sesame Street wants to teach your kids how to have a healthy relationship with technology.

Navigating the digital world is tough for parents, and it’s even harder for children. Sesame Street and Google have partnered on a bunch of resources to help teach kids about digital wellbeing. And, if they hang around to watch some Sesame Street on YouTube, so be it.

ESPN and Fox One’s $39.99 bundle has arrived.

The bundle, announced previously in August, offers monthly savings of around $10. It includes access to live sports and news across ESPN and Fox’s linear channels in both of their respective streaming apps.

Aolol.

The Internet darling valued at $100 billion in 2001 when it merged with Time Warner is for sale by Apollo Global Management for about 1 percent of that. Italy’s Bending Spoons is said to be interested, owner of WeTransfer, Evernote, Komoot, and Vimeo.

So which VC is going to throw money at this hot new LLM?

Look, I’m more of an Oxford English Dictionary girlie, but I respect the hustle from Merriam-Webster. I hope our terminally online dictionary raises a cool billion.

Fortnite wasted no time cooking up its KPop Demon Hunters collaboration that will see the Huntr/x girls squadding up to slay monsters in a movie-inspired version of the game’s Horde Rush mode running from October 2nd to November 1st. Naturally, Rumi, Zoey, and Mira skins will also be coming to the Fortnite Shop.

Rock Band 4 is being delisted on its 10th birthday, which is this weekend.

The birthday is on Sunday, October 5th, but “the original licenses for the core soundtrack are expiring,” a Harmonix employee said in the Rock Band Discord. DLC songs will also be delisted when they are 10 years old. Anything you own will remain in your library.

Mr. Scorsese is ready for his closeup.

Apple just released a new trailer for its upcoming five-part documentary on legendary director Martin Scorsese, and it looks filled with an appropriate amount of drama. The series is helmed by director Rebecca Miller and starts streaming on October 17th.

YouTube TV isn’t losing NBCU programming (yet).

YouTube announced that a short-term carriage extension deal was reached with NBCUniversal shortly after the previous agreement expired at midnight ET on September 30th. It’s unclear how long this new deal will last. The situation mirrors a similar short-term extensionand near-immediate resolution — between YouTube TV and NBCU in 2021.

Absolum, Dotemu’s new fantasy beat ‘em up, is getting an animated series.

Absolum has gorgeous-looking art already, so I think it could look great in a full animated series. There’s no word on when the series will come out, but the game is set to launch on October 9th.

Alphadots is Bloomberg’s new daily puzzle.

What EA’s buyout might mean for its future

The company may have to make big changes to justify the $55 billion deal.

8BitDo’s Pro 3 controller is now available in orange to match your iPhone 17 Pro.

The wireless controller, 8BitDo’s first with magnetic swappable buttons, debuted in July in three colors including purple and gray. It’s now also available in orange for $69.99 through 8BitDo and Amazon. It’s not a perfect match to Apple’s Cosmic Orange, but it’s close enough, and easily 8BitDo’s best color option yet.

Yes, the included charging dock comes in matching orange, too.
On the underside of the charging dock you’ll find storage for alternate buttons and a wireless adapter.

The Simpsons are getting another movie.

It’s set to debut on July 23rd, 2027, just about 20 years after the premiere of the first Simpsons movie in July 2007. I remember seeing the first in theaters, so now I feel really old.
