Table 7 The variation between papers is notable. E/ Nuevo Herald focused heavily on political stories (64.1%). El Diario had a mix of political (31%), immigration (28.6%), and crime (21.4%) stories. La Opinion, on the other hand, focused heavily on immigration stories (50%). Another variation of note is how the papers place Latinxs prominently in news stories they would not otherwise be featured in. While 76% of E/ Diario, 62% of E! Nuevo Herald, and 61% of La Opinion stories featured a Latinx person, there was variation in topical focuses. For example, a story in E/ Nuevo Herald about organ donations features a Latina woman and her child as the subjects. Organ donation is an issue not often tied to Latinxs, so this symbolic tying is notable in the Spanish language press. Otherwise, Latinxs are seen being excited for a new soccer team in E/ Diario, protesting ICE in La Opinion, and even “have similar foreign policy opinions as Americans,” according to a front-page story in E! Nuevo Herald. |n the stories with a coded Latinx subject, E/ Diario and La Opinion most often placed them in related to immigration. 38% of E/ Diario stories and 73% of La Opinion stories tied Latinx subjects to immigration. At the same time, E/ Nuevo Herald did not do this — most of their stories featuring a Latinx person were either in political or economic news.
