Furthermore, the collection of statistical data on the Peloponnese settlements gives the project a particular demographic value, as Papadopoulos (2003) points out. Geometric precision is not equal throughout the map’s extent, since even though at first the survey was conducted in detail, then it was simplified in order to accelerate works (Livieratos, 2009). Nevertheless, the final map of 1852 has been a cartographic reference in Greece for almost one century.

Users can select the thematic layer of their interest or combine more in order to form a spatial view of Greece in 1852 (for example roads, ports, bridges, and inns for a complete look into the communication network) or make visual comparisons (e.g. the number of settlements around big cities) and correlations. An example of organizing and combining data is illustrated in Figure 7, where the tower houses of the eastern Peloponnese are overlaid with the historical geophysical map (provided by the geological map of Emile Le Puillon de Boblaye). Apart from the expected density of towers on the peninsula of Mani (typical buildings of this region), a remarkable thick distribution in Evrotas Valley is evident as well as the presence of individual towers at the main junctions of the inland and sea communication network. By selecting a tower point, more information is available to users. Users can also navigate to the available texts or images tagged to a specific location. One or more multimedia material is attached to a location something that allows the aggregation and correlation of different pieces of information unrelated otherwise (for example in the town of Navarino, there is Prosper Baccuet hand drawing of the town’s huts, an architectural drawing of a church by Ravoisié and Poirot, and a lithography of a fountain by Blouet and related texts - Figure 8). This material,

The next step of our research is the development of semantic spatial data for publishing on the Semantic Web according to the conceptual model described. For this, ontologies (in OWL) wil be used integrating the available formal vocabularies t for this application and specifically: a) a cartographic for describing the geographic information from the ma RDF data and further be exploited in Semantic Web. T (suggested in Gkadolou et al., 2014), b) a geospatial ontology based on the GeoS ps and texts, c) the Geonames Ontology for standardizing the place names, and d) the OWL-Time ontology for describing the temporal properties of the aforementioned resources.
