It is difficult to compare these numbers with data from other Mayan homegardens, because of the different methodologies used in the references cited. However, total species occurrence is within the range of data (Table 1) from Rico-Gray et al. (1990), Herrera-Castro (1992), and Caballero (1992). The number of plant species found within each homegarden varies from 25 to 82. Forty-eight species found in this study have also been recorded in at least two recent ethnobotanical inventories of homegardens from other parts of the low- land Maya area of Mexico (Table 2). Although herbal medicine continues to be a frequent choice for treatment of common illnesses among families, the establishment of local hospitals and health programs by both local and federal governments is contributing to changes in traditional conceptions of health and medical care. Thus, the use of plant resources is rapidly declining as Western medicine re- places curers and home medical practices, and becomes the first medical choice for health care (Caballero 1994).
