Finally, I landed on the preponderance of different button types (see Fig. 1) and began thinking about those buttons in relation to Harriet Rice’s labor as a laundress. As Paul Mullins (2006) has written, Black women seamstresses and laundresses — in this case in Indianapolis — would frequently bring work home, leaving a material residue of buttons and pins that were presumably lost under the floorboards. What forms of labor may she have undertaken related to those buttons and for whom? Not only for economic self-sufficiency but also the forms of interpersonal care that go into mending and repairing the clothes on one’s back? What forms of multiplicitous economic self-sufficiency may be reflected in this material collection and to what forms of community cohesion might they connect?
