The great diffusion of Mobile Web-enabled devices allows the implementation of novel personalization, location and adaptation services that will place unprecedented strains on the server infrastructure of the content provider. This paper has a twofold contribution. First, we analyze the five-years trend of Mobile Web-based applications in terms of workload characteristics of the most popular services and their impact on the server infrastructures. As the technological improvements at the server level in the same period of time are insufficient to face the computational requirements of the future Mobile Web-based services, we propose and evaluate adequate resource management strategies. We demonstrate that pre-adaptating a small fraction of the most popular resources can reduce the response time up to one third thus facing the increased computational impact of the future Mobile Web services.

In a digital museum exhibition management system, two major issues need to be concerned. The first is regarding the efficient hypermedia generation for virtual exhibitions. The second is regarding the efficient access of multimedia items in a heterogonous environment where distributed digital museum resource management servers may locate at different institutes. This article presents a research project that incorporate the NCNU and INRIA research effort for developing a Web Services-based distributed digital museum content management framework. We first discuss our design of a multi-styles exhibition management framework using XSL for adaptive hypermedia presentation. Then, an endeavor that applies Web Service Architecture for multimedia data access on both keyword-based and content-based media retrieval scenario has been addressed.

This paper describes an academic reinforcement methodology resulted from the research activity carried out by a group of lecturers from the University of Malaga (UMA) with teaching in different engineering degrees (e.g., computer science, industrial and telecommunication engineering). The research, developed in the context of the UMA Lecturer Training Plan 2010/2011 1 , stems from the concern to solve a common problem detected in their daily work: students in the first courses have problems to understand certain key concepts, which usually are fundamental for their basic knowledge as engineers. Our methodology is based on the early identification of these "difficult" concepts and the creation of explanatory multimedia content available online, which is iteratively improved according to the feedback provided by the students. This reinforcement methodology will be implemented in diverse subjects of the new degrees given by the authors during the current and future academic years.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of using multimedia resources on the English vocabulary learning as a foreign language in a sample of university students. Following a quantitative approach, a quasi-experimental, longitudinal-prospective study was conducted with 62 university students (42.6% women with mean age of 20.9 and 57.4% man with mean age of 20.6); previously divided into three different groups. For pre and post-training measurements, two instruments were used in their forms A and B, validated in previous studies. As a secondary goal, the influence of the cognates present in both tests on the score and the way of asking them was verified, in consequence an instrument of own design was applied. During the training, the use of lessons from a virtual platform made it possible to present multimedia resources and evaluate autonomous learning in formative manner. In the post-test, only one type of test was applied to each group, detecting significant improvement in three out of the four original instruments. However, the results should be treated with reservations due to the limitation represented by sample size and conduct of the study, in distance mode.

En el presente trabajo se pretende identificar qué formatos favorecen una mayor eficiencia en el aprendizaje, para así establecer unas pautas de diseño (guidelines) respecto a la distribución y modalidad de presentación de información verbal en materiales educativos multimedia. Se realizaron dos experimentos que utilizaron la técnica de seguimiento ocular (eye tracking) como elemento innovador en el proceso de recogida de datos. Se produce una mayor eficiencia en el aprendizaje de los alumnos cuando los textos y las imágenes relacionadas se presentan próximos en el espacio y cuando la información se proporciona a través de una narración oral. The present article exposes the research process about the use of multimedia resources to contribute to the education of values in third grade students, comprised by 25 girls among the ages of 8 and 9 years old. The objective was to discover the benefits of using multimedia resources in relation to the teaching of values. The research planning was divided into three phases: before the activity, to conduct diagnostic activities; during the class with the use of multimedia resources, and after the activities, to carry the evaluation of the results. The findings reveal that the students show more interest in the topic of values and how to perform them correctly. Therefore, it is considered that the students accomplish a meaningful learning and learned to differentiate between wrong and right attitudes.

The Semantic Web is about adding formal structure and explicit semantics to web content for the purpose of more efficient information management and access by both humans and computers. Through the use of machine understandable semantics, web resources become much easier and more readily accessible. Populating the Semantic Web with multimedia metadata requires for appropriate technologies to support both the analysis (metadata extraction) and the annotation (metadata creation) processes. The media-and contentspecific semantics of multimedia resources pose great challenges in terms of capturing and manipulating the two layer semantics given the available knowledge representation formalisms. The Knowledge Web project, advancing ontology technology research efforts and ensuring transferring the semantic web from academia to industry, has provided solutions to some of the most challenging multimedia related problems.

In Puno, a region of Peru, the development of oral and written communication skills in basic education students displays weaknesses which could be overcome with the application of technological tools. The objective of the study was to determine the effectiveness of WhatsApp as a mobile learning resource in the development of oral and written communication skills of secondary level students at the ‘José Carlos Mariátegui’ educational institution (Puno-Peru). The population was comprised of 343 students and a non-probabilistic, convenience sampling was applied to include two fourth-level sections of 36 and 34 students, respectively. The first was the experimental group and the second, the control group. The selection was made considering that fourth-level students are the most appropriate age to use WhatsApp in order to assess the evolution of their skills through rubrics, in a participatory way. We are in a digital society where new technologies are constantly emerging and old technologies are being upgraded faster than we can blink. Digital reading has become an important means of reading, but the visual process for digital and paper reading are different. With eye tracking technique, orthogonal design and regression model, this paper, analyzed audiences’ eye movement when reading Chinese e-magazine under visual and auditory stimulations. An experimental e-magazine was created and 80 graduate students were randomly selected. All participants underwent the same setup but under different stimuli; they had to read short sentences while an eye tracker records their eye movement; after completion, participants answer a comprehension questionnaire. The most important results, analyzed in terms of eye fixations, are that text dubbing and background colors have a significant effect on reading comprehension, which means that with text dubbing and cool colors, it can lead to a better reading comprehension. The findings obtained reveal a better knowledge of the e-magazine reading behavior and it can be applied to the design of digital magazines. However, it is necessary to perform specific cross-cultural studies and to unify the units of measurement of eye tracker and the units of measure of reading effectiveness.
