Zusammenfassung Der Artikel gibt zunächst einen Überblick über die wichtigsten Ansätze zur Messung und Analyse von sozialen Wirkungen. Ziel ist es herauszustellen, welche Herausforderungen konzeptioneller und methodologischer Art sich verschiedenen Forschungsdesigns stellen: dem experimentellen Design, quasi-experimentellen Design, Ex-post-facto-Design, Regression Discontinuity Design, Pretest-Posttest-Design und den qualitativen Designs. Eine vergleichende Gegenüberstellung derselben zeigt auf, welche Komplementaritäten zwischen den verschiedenen Ansätzen möglich sind.

Given a randomly drawn sample, calibration weighting can provide double protection against the selection bias resulting from unit nonresponse. This means that if either an assumed linear prediction model or an implied unit selection model holds, the resulting estimator will be asymptotically unbiased in some sense. The functional form of the selection model when using linear alibration adjustment is dubious. We discuss an alternative, nonlinear calibration-weighting procedure and software that can, among other things, implicitly estimate a logistic-response model.

This paper illustrates the differences in inference that can be seen when traditional and multilevel structural equation modeling techniques are applied to hierarchical data. Research on faculty is an area in which multilevel data exist, and where previous research generally has not modeled the nested structure. Using data from the National Study of Postsecondary Faculty (NSPOF), this paper demonstrates a method for analyzing data that contain measurement error and come from multilevel structures. The NSPOF database contains responses from 25,780 faculty randomly chosen from 817 participating institutions. The integration of multilevel regression modeling and structural equation modeling, which can facilitate proper inference, is used to study faculty satisfaction. In this study, no substantive differences were shown when traditional and more complex modeling techniques were compared, but the results from the analyses contribute to the knowledge base regarding the institutional and job characteristics that can affect faculty satisfaction. Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) graduate students are often encouraged to maximize their engagement with supervised research and minimize teaching obligations. However, the process of teaching students engaged in inquiry provides practice in the application of important research skills. Using a performance rubric, we compared the quality of methodological skills demonstrated in written research proposals for two groups of early career graduate students (those with both teaching and research responsibilities and those with only research responsibilities) at the beginning and end of an academic year. After statistically controlling for preexisting differences between groups, students who both taught and conducted research demonstrate significantly greater improvement in their abilities to generate testable hypotheses and design valid experiments. Ein geschriebener Text ist etwas Festes, das unter unserem Auge liegen bleibt, das gesprochene Wort ist etwas Flüssiges, das ich im Augenblick des Gesprochenwerdens sich schon verflüchtigt. Die Intelligenz des Ohres muss dementsprechend eine andere sein als die des Auges. Der Unterschied zwischen diesen beiden Daseinsformen der Sprache wurde bisher in der Sprachforschung wenig reflektiert. Wenn sich die Gesprächsanalyse stärker auf die paralinguistischen und „musikalischen und gestischen“ Aspekte der Kommunikation richtet, werden bisher wenig beachtete Ebenen der Kommunikation sichtbar.
Wenn wir das Augenmerk zum Beispiel auf die Interaktions- und Verhandlungsstrategien der Gesprächsteilnehmer richten, die nicht explizit verbalisiert werden, so enthüllt sich eine Art Mikroniveau der Politik, das heisst die Balance von Konflikt und Kooperation im täglichen Leben. Allein schon die Analyse der Sprecherwechsel-Strategien macht grundlegende Wertkonstanten und Verhandlungsstrategien, sozusagen das mikropolitische System unseres täglichen Umgangs sichtbar.

Open and reproducible research receives more and more attention in the research community. Whereas empirical research may benefit from research data centres or scientific use files that foster using data in a safe environment or with remote access, methodological research suffers from the availability of adequate data sources. In economic and social sciences, an additional drawback results from the presence of complex survey designs in the data generating process, that has to be considered when developing and applying estimators. In the present paper, we present a synthetic but realistic dataset based on social science data, that fosters evaluating and developing estimators in social sciences. The focus is on supporting comparable and reproducible research in a realistic framework providing individual and household data. The outcome is provided as an open research data resource.

The formulation of theories and hypotheses is done at the level of concepts. These concepts are often tested by operationalizing them using survey questions. However, measurement errors make it impossible for survey questions to measure the concepts of interest perfectly. In order to correct for measurement errors, information is needed about their size, or the size of their complement, the quality. For the USA and Europe, a lot is already known about the quality of questions, but this has not yet been studied in some other parts of the world. In this paper, we use a multitrait-multimethod approach to estimate the quality of 27 questions in Mexico and Colombia. These initial results on quality for Central and Latin American countries show quality estimates that are relatively similar in terms of their relationships with the scale characteristics to what has been observed in the USA and Europe.

This paper addresses the question if it is meaningful to group basic values from the values model of Schwartz, which is a vital component of the European Social Survey (ESS), and presents an alternative approach. The suggestion to group values is raised in several studies led by Eldad Davidov, which more precisely conclude that only four of the original ten values can be studied as such (Hedonism, Stimulation, Self-direction, and Security), whereas the remaining six values have to be grouped in three pairs in order to solve the problem of a lack of discriminant validity. This paper indicates that the grouping was necessary because of the choice strategy of items for the ESS. The items chosen for the different values are chosen in such a way that the correlation within the value is relatively low and sometimes the correlations with items of other values is higher. We show this in three steps: the first one based on a German-study, looking for the correlation between the values in the original Portrait Values Questionnaire (PVQ). Secondly, the ESS selection from this wider set of items is used to show that this choice leads to much higher correlations between the values. Thirdly, an analysis with an alternative choice from the same PVQ set of items is done to show that this high correlation is not necessary. In this way we show that the high correlation between the values in the ESS is due to the selection of the items in the ESS and is not intrinsic to the values studied.

Today, we urgently call for an evaluation of its international impact on qualitative research. Evaluating the international impact of qualitative research and qualitative computing requires a consideration of the vast amount of qualitative research over the last decades, as well as thoughtfulness about the uneven and unequal way in which qualitative research and qualitative computing are present in different fields of study and geographical regions. To understand the international impact of qualitative computing requires evaluation of the digital divide and the huge differences between center and peripheries. The international impact of qualitative research, and, in particular qualitative computing, is the question at the heart of this array of selected papers from the "Qualitative Computing: Diverse Worlds and Research Practices Conference." In this article, we introduce the reader to the goals, motivation, and atmosphere at the conference, taking place in Istanbul, Turkey, in 2011. The dialogue generated there is still in the air, and this introduction is a call to spread that voice.

The research relationship between qualitative and quantitative researchers is influenced by their constructions of one another's research approaches. While we, as qualitative researchers, have our own construction of quantitative research we seldom get quantitative people's construction of qualitative research. In this paper, we present our quantitative counterpart's construction of qualitative research in the form of themes we derived collaboratively from a small roundtable discussion on the use of the qualitative approach for research management studies. We define 'construction' as the meaning structure shared by the participants on the relationship between qualitative and quantitative research. This exercise has implications for our presentation of qualitative research as a complementary research approach to quantitative research and on our ongoing construction of the quantitative-qualitative research relationship.

In this article, we draw on LORENZER's method in our analysis of a single case data extract derived from a research project generating data through the Tavistock Infant Observation tradition. The partial case analysis demonstrates our methodological approach and explores conceptual territory at the meeting point of German and British psychoanalytically-informed traditions. Our scenic composition synthesised key elements of one observation visit to the home of a young black first-time mother in London. LORENZER's advice to the cultural analyst to explore what irritates or provokes in the scene has something in common with the way that observers in the infant observation tradition use their emotional responses and process their experience. The aim is to provide access to what WINNICOTT described as an intermediate area of experience and LORENZER considered "inbetween". We explore this area through two provocations in our scenic composition. Using these data examples we ask: is it possible to conceptualise collective, societal-cultural unconscious processes (LORENZER's gesellschaftlich-kollektives Unbewußtes, 1986) within this intermediate area? Specifically, how is racial and class difference present in the scene? How can it be located through scenic understanding of research data? And why does it matter?

Institutional trust is often measured by several items that are analyzed individually or as sum-scores. However, it is difficult to summarize the results of individual-items analyses, whereas sum-scores may be meaningless if the dimensions that the items are assumed to measure are not verified. Although these limitations are circumvented by using factor analysis, response styles may still bias research results. We use data from Guyana to show that a second-order factor model is appropriate for measuring institutional trust. We also demonstrate that response styles can inflate item and factor convergent validity and may either distort regression effects or create completely spurious ones. We therefore recommend using factor models with corrections for response styles in institutional trust research instead of sum-scores and individual-items analyses.

Zusammenfassung: Der Beitrag diskutiert die Analyse von Interdiskursen und Kollektivsymbolen als Moglichkeit sozialwissenschaftlicher Forschung. Die entsprechenden Optionen werden bislang noch zu wenig genutzt. Dabei setzt der Interdiskursansatz mit der Integration und Popularisierung von Wissen an der sozialwissenschaftlich entscheidenden Frage an, wie Wissen und Perspektiven plausibel gemacht und mit dem Eindruck von Legitimitat ausgestattet werden. Es geht, in anderen Worten, um die Justierung von Bedeutungen, die Ausubung von Macht durch Sprache und die dadurch erfolgende zeitweilige Fixierung sozialer Positionen. Background Internal pilots provide useful information which can help to optimise the running of the main trial. Although some recommendations exist in the literature for the design of internal pilots, little is known about current practice in terms of the specification and also the assessment of progression criteria. The aim of the review is to provide an overview of current practice. Methods A cohort of clinical trials with an internal pilot, funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), Health Technology Assessment programme (HTA), extracted in 2017 was reviewed. Data were extracted from: project descriptions; summary of changes from the first stage; feedback about the full application; monitoring notes; progress report history and protocols, for information about the design and assessment of internal pilots. Einführung Die Praxis der Entwicklungszusammenarbeit nimmt zunehmend vom traditionellen Projektansatz Abschied und bemüht sich um kooperative und breiter angelegte gemeinsame Programme im Rahmen der so genannten „Programmorientierten Gemeinschaftsfinanzierung“ (PGF). Die Evaluierung solcher Programme kann naturgemäß nicht nach denselben Prinzipien verlaufen, wie die traditionelle Projektevaluierung. Der folgende Beitrag liefert erste konzeptionelle Überlegungen zu den Möglichkeiten, Chancen und Risiken von Evaluierung in diesem Bereich. Dabei wird PGF zunächst dargestellt als eine Mischform zwischen der herkömmlichen geberund projektspezifischen Entwicklungszusammenarbeit einerseits, und dem Einsatz von Budgethilfe andererseits, bei dem jede Zurechenbarkeit auf einzelne Geber oder einzelne Projekte, ja selbst auf einzelne Sektoren endgültig entfällt.

Das vorliegende Projekt widmet sich einem spezifischen Testkontexteffekt, der als (Item-)Positionseffekt bekannt ist und die systematische Variation von statistischen Eigenschaften von Einzelitems in Abhangigkeit ihrer Darbietungsposition in einem Leistungstest bezeichnet. Im Fokus der Betrachtung stehen individuelle Unterschie­de in der Hohe von Positionseffekten, deren Korrelate und die Auswirkungen der Vernachlassigung von Positionseffekten insbesondere in Large-Scale-Assessments. Die auf Grundlage exitierender Datensatze von Large-Scale-Assessments durchge­fuhrten Analysen dokumentieren systematische Zusammenhange von Positions­effekten mit Merkmalen der Schulerinnen und Schuler, der Einzelschulen und der Erhebungszeitpunkte. Die Ergebnisse zeigen ferner, dass Positionseffekte zu ignorie­ren zu verzerrten Ergebnissen hinsichtlich Leistungsunterschieden, Korrelaten von Testleistungen und Leistungszuwachsen fuhren kann. An Answer to Ronald Hitzler's "Pivotal Characteristics and Peripheral Confusions…." Zusammenfassung: Bei diesem Text handelt es sich um einen weiteren Kommentar zu dem von Ronald Hitzler verfassten Diskussionsbeitrag (Hitzler 2016). Bereits Günter Mey (2016) und Uwe Flick (2016) hatten profunden Zweifel daran geäußert, dass die von Ronald Hitzler propagierte Unterscheidung a) korrekt und b) produktiv ist. Dieser Richtung folgt auch der vorliegende Beitrag. Argumentiert wird unter anderem, dass die von Hitzler als gesetzt betrachtete Theorieperspektive defizitär ist, weil die Weiterentwicklung der Theorie-und Methodendiskurse der Soziologie nach Berger/Luckmann nicht adäquat rezipiert wird. Argumentiert wird auch, dass die Entgegensetzung von qualitativ und interpretativ einen Kategorienfehler beinhaltet, weil auf unterschiedliche Bezugsebenen referierende Begriffe miteinander verglichen werden.

Der Autor gibt einen Zwischenbericht über ein Projekt, das der räumlich und zeitlich differenzierten Erfassung der nationalsozialistischen Bewegung in Österreich dient. Zunächst werden die Methoden und Probleme der quantitativen Analyse dargestellt. Es werden die verschiedenen faschistischen Strömungen und Organisationen in Österreich während einzelner Zeitabschnitte dargestellt. Zeitliche und räumliche Dimensionen müssen für die Analyse der österreichischen nationalsozialistischen Bewegung besonders beachtet werden, um die Spezifik der einzelnen Phasen erfassen zu können. Auf Basis der Dokumente des Berlin Document Centers über die Parteimitglieder der NSDAP nimmt der Autor eine differenzierte Analyse der österreichischen Parteimitglieder vor. We present the results of a survey experiment in which we manipulate the order that respondents are administered vote choice and economic evaluation items. Our findings add to the growing body of evidence which suggests that survey respondents tacitly align evaluations of the national economy with previously stated attitudes and behaviour. Our results have implications for theories of economic voting and for the design of national election study questionnaires.

To the best of our knowledge, most of the few methodological studies which analyze the impact of faked interviews on survey results are based on "artificial fakes" generated by project students in a "laboratory environment". In contrast, panel data provide a unique opportunity to identify data which are actually faked by interviewers. By comparing data of two waves, unequivocal fakes are easily identifiable. However, in most surveys there is no second wave because they have a pure cross-sectional nature. In search of a method which does not need two waves of data we test an unconventional benchmark called Benford's Law, which is used by several accountants to discover frauds. Our preliminary results let us conclude that Benford´s Law might be not an efficient method for detecting faked data, but it might be a new instrument for quality control of the interviewing process The raw data of the German SocioEconomic Panel Study (SOEP) provide a rich source of faked interviews because it is built on several sub-samples. However, because interviewers know that panel respondents will be interviewed again over the course of time, clever interviewers will not fake panel interviews. In fact, in raw data of SOEP the share is about only 0,5 percent of all records. The fakes are used for an analysis of the potential impact of non detected fakes on survey results. The major result is that the faked records has no impact on the mean and the proportions. But in very rare, exceptional cases there may be a bias in estimates of correlations and regression coefficients if fakes would not be detected. One should note that-except for some fakes in the first two waves of sample E-faked data were never disseminated within the widely-used SOEP. The fakes were detected before the data were released.

Auch vor dem Hintergrund aktueller Veränderungen von Erwerbsarbeit bleibt die Fallstudie aufgrund ihrer vielgestaltigen Einsatzmöglichkeiten eine zentrale Forschungsstrategie für die Arbeits- und Industriesoziologie. Sie steht jedoch vor einer Reihe von Herausforderungen, die eine wesentlich intensivere Reflexion methodischer und methodologischer Probleme erfordern als bisher üblich. Offene Fragen bestehen vor allem im Hinblick auf die Fallkonstruktion, die Methodenkombination und den Theoriebezug. Da auch die internationale Diskussion zur Case Study Methodology erst am Anfang steht, sind kaum lehrbuchmäßige Lösungen verfügbar. Fallstudienempirie erfordert deshalb eine Reihe von projektspezifischen forschungsstrategischen Entscheidungen: klare Schwerpunktsetzung in den Erkenntniszielen, eine gezielte (und begründete) Auswahl von methodischen Variationen und die bewusste Reflexion praktischer Forschungserfahrungen innerhalb und zwischen Forschungsteams.

Die vom Referat "Evaluierung der Entwicklungszusammenarbeit, Außenrevision" des Bundesministeriums für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit (BMZ) herausgegebenen Evaluation Working Papers behandeln methodische und konzeptionelle Fragen im Zusammenhang mit Evaluierungen des BMZ oder generelle Fragen der Methodik und Herangehensweisen von Evaluierungen. Sie dienen daher als Referenzdokumente für Evaluierungsberichte und als Diskussionsbeitrag für die Fachöffentlichkeit. Collecting biomarkers as part of general purpose surveys offers scientists - and social scientists in particular - the ability to study biosocial phenomena, e.g. the relation between genes and human behavior. We explore the feasibility of collecting buccal cells for genetic analyses with normal interviewers as part of a pretest for the German Socio-economic Panel Study (SOEP) using a probability sample. We introduce a new non-invasive technique for collecting cell material for genetic analyses and test its quality. We found no technical difficulties in collecting the genetic material and almost all samples collected could be analyzed. However, one third of interviewers reported it was hard to convince panel members to participate. The "biomarker wave" showed no reduction in response rate compared to the previous wave that included no biomarkers and the sample exhibited very little selectivity. This article serves a dual purpose. On the one hand, I seek to understand social representations and the collective memory of a sample of older adults, resident in the metropolitan area of Mexico City. On the other hand, I wish to reflect on the methodology used to achieve that objective, placing special emphasis on the combination of two complementary techniques: Atlas.ti, a tool used to carry out a semantic analysis of the interviews, and Alceste, a program that makes it possible to observe a classification of the terms used by respondents based on a statistical analysis of co-occurrences.

Over the past decades, scholarly interest has led to publications on the practices and development of qualitative research (QR) in countries outside of the Anglo-American core. Much of the writing is descriptive, providing an overview of the QR path and development in a particular country. Recently, qualitative researchers in the periphery have begun to articulate a collective professional identity in relation to the Anglo-American core by questioning both the dominance of the Anglo-American core and the current divide between QR in the core and the periphery. To date, insufficient effort has been made to develop this collective professional identity in order to overcome Anglo-American domination in the periphery and to indigenize QR. Context: In this paper, we review and discuss the piloting in Norway of a German methodology for competence diagnostics in vocational education and training: the Competence Development and Assessment in TVET (COMET) project. Our overarching theme is determining to what extent such large-scale assessment systems are valid for international comparisons in this sector. Method: We present the theoretical underpinnings of the COMET model and position our discussion within the broader context of the concept of “professional competence” (berufliche Kompetenz) and methodological guidelines for its measurement. Terminology from psychometrics on “measurement equivalence” is described and serves as a template for identifying challenges in using the Norwegian data for comparative purposes.
