Sustainable living labs

Candidate LLs joining LL associations and networks (ENoLL, Forum LLSA...) undergo qualityassessment processes based on specific criteria and evaluation frameworks to guarantee members meet their LL standards. Currently, limited attention is paid on how such evaluation methods can contribute to future LL-performance. The need to deeper understand the architectural aspects of LLs and further study effective management-approaches has been raised by other authors. Schuurman (2015) proposed a macro-meso-micro-level approach for classifying LLs. Despite its potential value, this three-level analysis approach has not yet been fully recognized in existing LL evaluation frameworks. The adoption of a harmonized macro-meso-micro evaluation approach, with a clear focus on the macro-level could support the development of LL towards sustainability, impact and efficacy. This paper aims to define a set of harmonized weighted criteria for a comprehensive LL evaluation framework to be used for assessing LLs on all three levels based on multi-method research approaches.

The paper shares the experience of the building environmental eXperience Laboratory (beXLab) at the DIDA Department of Architecture-University of Florence, an interdisciplinary and open research group working on the experimentation of transferable methodological approaches and practical tools to support the challenging twin transitions, the green and the digital, starting from pivotal public buildings. As prototypical university Living Lab (born in the frame of the Med-EcoSuRe project, from here LL), beXLab is a shared space where researchers (architects, technical physicians, energy and information engineers, user experience designers, etc…) are experimenting integrated and innovative retrofit solutions, by involving key actors (decision makers, technical offices, energy managers), stakeholders (technicians, companies) and end-users (students, univerisity community). The LL place and space in the pilot university building of Santa Verdiana (in the UNESCO World Heritage Centre of Florence) was equipped with a bulk of IoT sensors for the monitoring of real-time environmental parameters and used as a test room for innovative retrofit/refurbishment and advanced technologies application, as well as to capture and valorise the users' experience. The beXLab physical space is coupled with a BIM model, as a base for the development of a Digital Twin intended to construct a reliable and shareable image of reality (i.e. energy performances and indoor comfort/well-being assessment) and forecast trustable future scenarios (i.e. simulations towards participative design processes). Low energy educational buildings are becoming the standard for new buildings in European and Mediterranean partner countries. Meanwhile, the potential of efficient renovation of existing buildings continues to be a development focus in these countries. Technical solutions are continuously proposed by universities for eco-sustainable building renovation, but there is still a gap between designed models and real-world application. Med-EcoSuRe project is rooted in the key role that Mediterranean universities have to contribute to environmental development and combat climate change. The project brings together researchers and stakeholders to build a common understanding of the eco-sustainable building renovation issues and aims to empower regional knowledge-to-action process, starting by the university’s immediate neighbourhood, which is the university building.

Abstract.

The consequences of accelerating climate change for land and sea biodiversity require innovative approaches to research. Interdisciplinary re- search serves to connect natural science, social sciences and humanities, tech- nology, and engineering, as well as welcoming citizen scientists into the re- search environment. Interdisciplinarity is part of a developing innovative ap- proach to research that emphasizes co-evolution of traditional sciences, with citizen science and participatory engagement in the realisation of research goals and the promotion of climate change mitigation strategies. In this article, through the example of shellfish maricultures we illustrate interdisciplinarity, particularly demonstrating how marine biology, health and well-being, social science and cultural geography come together at the interface between nature, culture, and climate change mitigation strategies.

Living lab is an open innovation approach highlighting active user involvement, multi-stakeholder collaboration while conducing testing and development activities in real-life settings across the different innovation process stages. Partially sequential mixed method approach was applied to evaluate more in-depth what kind of business models living labs are following as well as identifying the underlying factors influencing the business model selections. The sample group consisted 15 health and wellbeing living lab organizations from eight different countries. Findings indicate that all sample group organizations were about to change their business model strategy in near future, thus indicating that the living lab business models are not yet stabilized. This paper examines a transformative tourism case study driven by local entrepreneurship in the coastal and post-violence/peripheral village of Zumaia, in the Basque Country (Spain). This paper aims at addressing an innovative methodology called ‘Tourism Living Lab through Multistakeholders’ Penta Helix framework’ in response to a globalised trend of increasing visitors. The result shows democratic tourism policy-making practices at the local level, including (i) a participatory strategic formulation process (ii) by fostering a local entrepreneurial ecosystem to overcome ‘tourism-phobia’ (iii) while renewing local identity (iv) through bridging social capital for a new post-violence era in the Basque Country.

Based in the results of the EPITELIO project (1996–98), an European founded research project on Telematics against Social Exclusion, this paper describes the possibilities of a new generation of community networking. The world is becoming digital and urban. For the first time, a global network society (M.Castells) is emerging. In parallel, an increasing gap between the connected populations and the unconnected ones are deepening. Next generation community networking is a possible solution for bridging such gap. As the Internet is now a convergent information infrastructure technology, community networking can works as a kind of convergent information society technology. Digital cities and community networks organizations can work together towards this new social platform of the digital era.
