This study simulated the production of bioethanol from mixed microalgae to the assess economic feasibility on an industrial scale. For the first time, the kinetic study of the chemical hydrolysis of mixed microalgae was carried out using the AQUASIM software. The chemical hydrolysis for the pretreatment of microalgae was carried out using H2SO4 (2.5%, 5%, 10% (v/v)), H3PO3 (2.5%, 5%, 10% (v/v)), and NaOH (1%, 2%, 4% (v/v)) at the different biomass concentrations (25 to 100 g/L) at the temperature of 121 ℃ for 70 min. Kinetic constants were calculated using experimental data and the AQUASIM software. It was found that the optimum yield of sugars, which was obtained, was about 93%. From the comparison of the values ​​of the reaction rate constant (k), it was observed that the hydrolysis rate ​​at 50 g/L by using H2SO4 2.5% (v/v), is higher compared to 25, 75, and 100 g/L, and the higher reaction rate constant supports the faster hydrolysis of algal biomass. These kinetic constants were applied in simulating the process on an industrial scale using the SuperPro Designer software. Experimental and simulation results showed that 3.6 g/L of bioethanol is produced from the 9.3 g/L of glucose under optimal conditions. Also, simulation results using the SuperPro Designer software demonstrated that eliminating the algal biomass drying stage has the potential to save up to 713,000 $ in operational expenses.

En el presente trabajo se efectuó un estudio técnico-económico preliminar de dos propuestas tecnológicas de producción de biodiesel empleando aceite de soya como materia prima principal y bajo las condiciones económicas actuales de Brasil. Para eso se utiliza el simulador SuperPro Designer® v.8.5. En la primera tecnología propuesta (Caso Base) se obtiene biodiesel refinado y glicerol crudo, mientras que en la segunda (Variante) también se produce biodiesel refinado, y el glicerol crudo es purificado hasta una pureza final de 99,75 %. Vegetable oils are rich in content unsaturated fatty acid from the type of oleic acid, linoleic acid and linolenic acid that can be converted to epoxide groups. Penggunaan minyak lumas yang tepat akan berpengaruh pada kinerja mesin yang baik, sehingga masa pakai mesin kendaraan lebih lama dan meningkatkan efi siensi secara keseluruhan. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan cara membuat minyak lumas untuk kendaraan sepeda motor SAE 10W 40, API SL/JASO MB yang memerlukan spesifi kasi khusus dengan kinerja yang optimum, kemudian melakukan uji jalan sampai mencapai jarak tempuh 5000 km. Analisis minyak lumas bekas (used oil) dilakukan untuk mengetahui unjuk kerja minyak lumas dan pengaruh pemakaiannya terhadap komponen mesin. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa minyak lumas bekas mesin sepeda motor hasil formulasi, hasilnya masih di bawah nilai batas toleransinya, sehingga dapat disimpulkan bahwa durabilitas minyak lumas hasil formulasi ML-F mampu digunakan sampai jarak tempuh 5000 km.

Standar Nasional Indonesia adalah standar acuan untuk produk dan jasa yang dipasarkan di dalam negeri maupun untuk keperluan ekspor, dengan demikian produk dan jasa yang berasal dari luar negeri harus memenuhi SNI apabila akan dipasarkan di Indonesia. Tujuan penelitian ini untuk mengetahui faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhi mutu produk yang dipasarkan, serta implementasi sistem manajemen mutu dalam rangka menjamin mutu produk. Penelitian ini mengambil kasus pemantauan mutu produk pelumas yang beredar pada tahun 2009, 2012 dan 2015 di pasaran wilayah Jabodetabek dan beberapa kota besar di Indonesia, yang dijual di SPBU maupun pengecer. Jenis pelumas yang diambil adalah minyak lumas mesin bensin empat langkah kendaraan bermotor dengan tingkat mutu unjuk kerja API SG sampai dengan API SN. Karakteristik yang dievaluasi, yaitu: Viskositas Kinematik pada 100 o C dengan ASTM D445 dan Sifat Penguapan (metode Noack) dengan ASTM D5800. Berdasarkan data hasil uji 316 buah sampel minyak lumas, persentase produk yang tidak memenuhi standar spesifikasi untuk nilai viskositas kinematik pada 100 o C adalah 1,6%, 8,9% dan 4,5% masingmasing untuk tahun 2009, 2012 dan 2015. Sedangkan untuk nilai sifat penguapan (Metode Noack) adalah 3,92% dan 1,14% masing-masing untuk tahun 2009 dan 2015. Ketidaksesuaian kualitas produk minyak lumas dengan standar spesifikasi tersebut seharusnya dapat dieliminasi apabila sistem manajemen mutu ISO 9001:2008 diterapkan secara efektif dan konsisten, karena pada setiap tahapan proses dilakukan pemantauan kualitas produk secara kontinyu. Dengan demikian dapat dipastikan bahwa kualitas produk minyak lumas yang dihasilkan memenuhi standar spesifikasi.

Polymer-enhanced ultrafiltration was used to separate heavy metal ions from their multicomponent mixtures. Model solutions containing an equimolar mixture of Cu(II), Zn(II), Cd(II), Ni(II), Cr(III) were supplemented with poly(sodium acrylate) PSA (a metal-binding polymer) and the ultrafiltration process was carried out. The separation effectiveness of individual metal ions was studied under various process conditions (amount of PSA, pH, total metal concentration, presence of coexisting ions), and the possibility of simultaneous or selective (competitive) separation of individual ions from a multicomponent mixture was evaluated. Effective simultaneous separation of metal ions occurred in solutions containing a sufficient polymer dosage (polymer/metal molar ratio C PSA /C M ≥ 7) and at a sufficiently high pH (pH ≥ 6). Since the polymer showed differential affinity for the metals tested (Cr(III) ≈ Cu(II) > Cd(II) >> Zn(II) > Ni(II)), partially selective separation of ions from the mixture at a decreased pH or lowered C PSA /C M was possible. In addition, certain co-occurring ions (especially versenate, EDTA) decreased the separation effectiveness of Cu(II), Zn(II), Cd(II) and Ni(II). These preliminary observations were confirmed by the ultrafiltration concentration of the metal mixture, carried out at different values of the process parameters, and the subsequent decomplexation-ultrafiltration process (pH = 2), enabling the recovery of concentrated metal solutions of varying composition, depending on the process conditions.

In this work, the process of biogas production from palm oil factory effluent was simulated and then the produced biosynthetic gas was sweetened. For this purpose, the biogas production process from wastewater treatment was simulated using SuperPro Designer v9.0 software. Then, the resulting biogas entered the chemical absorption and reforming sections for sweetening and conversion to syngas, respectively, and these steps were simulated with Aspen HYSYS v11.0 software. The simulation results of the first stage showed that the effluent feed of this factory with a flow rate of 42000 kg/h and COD of 62000 mg/L leads to the production of 1786 kg/h biogas containing various compounds such as methane, carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide and water with the molar fraction of 0.446, 0.245, 0.178 and 0.040, respectively. In the chemical absorption section, MEA solvent 10 %wt. and solvent-togas molar ratio of 13.51 were used, which led to the efficient removal of CO 2 and H 2 S up to 1 ppm and 99.99%, respectively. The examination of temperature changes in the absorption tower also showed that the temperature increases along the absorption tower. In the methane steam-reforming unit, two different strategies were used: 1) plug flow reactor (with fluid package of Peng-Robinson-Stryjek-Vera) and 2) conversion and equilibrium reactors (with fluid package of Peng-Robinson). The results showed that the purity of hydrogen in the biogas produced in the second strategy (conversion and equilibrium reactors) was higher than the first one (plug flow reactor), and on the other hand, the purity of CO 2 was zero in the second strategy.

Dalam penelitian ini, plastik PVC dibuat dengan mencampur resin PVC dan plasticizer epoksi metil oleat di dalam sebuah mixer dan dicetak dengan metode PVC coating. Plastik PVC yang terbentuk dan kantong darah komersial dikarakterisasi dengan mengukur sifat-sifat mekanik (kuat tarik dan regang ulur) dan sifat kelarutan plasticizer dalam metanol. Adapun plasticizer epoksi metil oleat dibuat melalui rangkaian proses esterifikasi, dan epoksidasi. Epoksi metil oleat yang dihasilkan memiliki sifat-sifat yang lebih baik daripada produk komersial. Hal ini ditunjukkan oleh angka oksiran yang lebih tinggi dan angka iod yang lebih rendah daripada epoksi komersial. Uji kompatibel epoksi metil oleat sebagai plasticizer untuk produksi lembar plastik PVC menunjukkan hasil yang hampir sama (lebih rendah) dengan lembar plastik kantong darah komersial. Lembar plastik yang dihasilkan memiliki kuat tarik sebesar 15,7 Mpa dan regang putus 315 %. Sementara itu kantong darah komersial memiliki kuat tarik sebesar 19,2 Mpa dan regang putus 340 %. Adanya asam lemak yang tidak bereaksi pada proses epoksidasi menyebabkan berkurangnya kekuatan perpaduan antara matriks dan fase terdispersi. Hal ini yang menyebabkan nilai kuat tarik dan regang putus plastik menurun. Adapun jumlah senyawa ftalat (DOP) yang terlarut dalam metanol dari produk plastik PVC dan kantong darah komersial masing-masing sebesar 42,1% dan 40,2%. Jumlah DOP yang terlarut baik dari produk plastik PVC maupun kantong darah komersial masih memenuhi standar kesehatan.

Membrane technology is a promising water purification unit operation from household use to industrial application owing to its simplicity of operation, efficient recovery and minimum need for chemical and space allocation. Due to that reason, study on the membrane applications have becoming more popular among scientific community nowadays and one of the applications is removal of heavy metal using ultrafiltration (UF). However, a stand-alone UF will be not able to carry out the removal of heavy metals effectively. Certain modification is required in order to enhance its rejection via unique facilitated mechanism. Thus in this review, role of surface charge interaction as well as the method of complexation-ultrafiltration were discussed.

Background In this study the removal of Chromium (III) and Chromium (VI) ions are investigated via polymer enhanced ultrafiltration under important process parameters. This study proposes the use of unmodified starch as a novel polymer in the ultrafiltration process and its performance on the removal of chromium ions was compared with a commonly used polymer, polyethylene glycol. Methods The experiments were carried out at 1.5 bar and different pH values by using 10 kDa hollow fiber membrane operating in a cross-flow mode. Results The best chromium ions removal obtained approached 99% for Chromium (III) ion by unmodified starch at alkaline pH region and at pH 7 for Chromium (VI) ions retention by polyethylene glycol. Plastik PVC yang terbentuk dan kantong darah komersial dikarakterisasi dengan mengukur sifat-sifat mekanik (kuat tarik dan regang ulur) dan sifat kelarutan plasticizer dalam metanol. Adapun plasticizer epoksi metil oleat dibuat melalui rangkaian proses esterifikasi, dan epoksidasi.

Minyak nabati kaya akan kandungan asam lemak tak jenuh dari jenis asam oleat, linoleat, dan linolenat yang dapat dikonversi menjadi gugus senyawa epoksida. Minyak epoksida memiliki banyak kegunaan diantaranya sebagai plastisiser untuk memperbaiki fleksibilitas, elastisitas, dan stabilitas bahan karena pengaruh panas dan radiasi. Pada penelitian ini, minyak sawit dikonversi terlebih dahulu menjadi metil ester minyak sawit (MEMS) dan kemudian dilanjutkan reaksi epoksidaso menghasilkan metil ester minyak sawit terepoksidasi (MEMST). Metode response surface digunakan untuk optimasi dan mempelajari pengaruh suhu reaksi dan rasio mol MEMS/CH 3 COOH terhadap konversi reaksi dan bilangan oxirane. Kondisi reaksi yang optimal ditunjukkan oleh kandungan gugus oxirane yang tinggi yaitu bilangan oxirane. Reaksi epoksidasi dilakukan di dalam reaktor batch menggunakan asam asetat sebagai senyawa pembawa oksigen. Central Composite Design (CCD) dengan dua variabel independent dan dua fungsi response digunakan untuk mempelajari pengaruh variabel input. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan konversi reaksi meningkat dengan meningkatnya suhu reaksi dan rasio mol MEMS/CH 3 COOH sebelum mencapai titik maksimum dan kemudian turun secara monoton. Kondisi reaksi epoksidasi yang optimal ditunjukkan oleh bilangan oxirane maksimum yang dicapai pada suhu reaksi 56,3 o C and rasio mol MEMS/CH 3 COOH adalah 1:0,43.

Pelumas atau yang biasa disebut dengan oli adalah zat kimia, yang umumnya cairan yang diberikan diantara dua benda bergerak untuk mengurangi gesekan. Kebutuhan akan pelumas di Indonesia saat ini terus meningkat seiring dengan berkembangnya teknologi kendaraan bermotor terutama motor skutik.  Pelumas berkualitas rendah apabila digunakan didalam mesin akan mudah rusak atau terdekomposisi, sehingga akan berkurang daya lumasnya. Oleh karena itu perlu dibuktikan kinerja pelumas baik mineral maupun sintetik dengan uji jalan.    Pada penelitian ini dilakukan uji coba ( road test ) terhadap dua sampel pelumas motor matic SAE 10W-30, API SL JASO MA dengan perbedaan bahan dasar mineral dan sintetik dan additive yang sama. Road test dilakukan sampai 6000 km selama 15 hari perjalanan Jakarta-Bandung. Epoksi asam oleat diproduksi menggunakan asam asetat sebagai pembawa oksigen dalam media organik cair. Serangan terhadap cincin oksiran oleh ion nukleopilik berlangsung dalam proses epoksidasi dengan katalis cair sehingga menurunkan rendemen epoksi. Kami melaporkan suatu kajian degradasi cincin oksiran yang dipengaruhi oleh jumlah katalis asam sulfat dan waktu penambahan pelarut heksan pada reaksi epoksidasi asam oleat dengan hidrogen peroksid. Diperoleh hasil bahwa peningkatan jumlah katalis asam sulfat selain dapat mempercepat reaksi juga dapat menyebabkan degradasi epoksida semakin meningkat. Pada kondisi proses: suhu 50-55 ºC; rasio mol asam oleat : asam asetat : hidrogen peroksid = 1 : 0.4 : 1.5; dan kecepatan pengaduk 1200 rpm, diperoleh jumlah katalis asam sulfat yang terbaik sebesar 3.5% yang dapat menghasilkan epoksid dengan bilangan oksiran dan bilangan iod masing-masing sebesar 3.15 dan 4.66. Sementara itu penambahan jumlah heksan tidak berpengaruh secara signifikan terhadap kecepatan reaksi pemutusan ikatan rangkap, namun demikian penambahan heksan dalam waktu yang tepat dapat menurunkan degradasi cincin oksiran. Penambahan heksan sejumlah 125 g pada satu jam pertama memberikan degradasi oksiran yang paling rendah yaitu 50%.

The monitoring on commercial engine lubricants have resulted that the properties of most lubricants (synthetic, semi synthetic and mineral type) have met the requirements specifiedfor common engine oil. However, significant variations have been found in the properties such as viscosity, viscosity index and additive contents (anti oxidant &detergent). Too high in viscosity will give difficulty during engine staring and increases the fuel consumption. Meanwhile if the viscosity is too low this will create more risks for engine damage (metal to metal contact). Some of the samples from synthetic, semi synthetic and mineral lubricants have shown that the additives contents (anti oxidant, antiwear anddetergent) are too low. Pengembangan minyak lumas bio-based yang lebih ramah lingkungan dilakukan untuk mendapatkan alternatif bagi bahan dasar pelumas konvensional yang berasal dari minyak bumi. Proses yang dikembangkan mencakup 3 tahap reaksi: (1) dehidrasi gliserol, (2) stabilisasi asam oleat dengan katalis asam, dan (3) esterifikasi antara produk dari kedua reaksi sebelumnya. Minyak lumas biobased yang dibuat memenuhi spesifikasi viskositas pelumas mesin otomotif SAE 50. Kelemahan utama dari bahan ini adalah sifatnya yang rentan terhadap oksidasi, terutama pada suhu tinggi. Pada makalah ini dilaporkan hasil-hasil studi empirik untuk meningkatkan ketahanan oksidasi melalui modifikasi proses dengan cara mereaksikannya dengan phenyl--naphtylamine (PNA), suatu antioksidan radical scavenger, sehingga ester yang dihasilkan memiliki struktur PNA pada molekulnya. Reaksi dengan PNA dilakukan bersama-sama dengan reaksi tahap (2), sehingga secara praktis tidak diperlukan tahapan khusus pada pemrosesannya.. Kadar PNA divariasikan hingga maksimum 2½% berat. Uji ketahanan oksidasi dilakukan pada suhu 150 o C menggunakan katalis berupa besi dan tembaga. Hasil percobaan menunjukkan bahwa modifikasi yang dilakukan menghasilkan produk yang secara intrinsik memiliki ketahanan oksidasi tinggi. Hasil modifikasi memiliki ketahanan oksidasi yang lebih baik daripada produk yang diblending dengan PNA pada kadar yang sama. Formulasi lebih lanjut dengan 4,4'-methylene-bis(2,6-ditbutyl) phenol menunjukkan adanya efek homosinergistik.

Pelumas bertindak sebagai media anti-gesekan dan membantu mengurangi keausan komponen selama kontak dengan gerakan bagian-bagian mesin. Di seluruh dunia, cadangan berbasis minyak bumi akan menipis sehingga dapat menyebabkan kenaikan harga dan menciptakan kekhawatiran pencemaran lingkungan. Studi ini mengkaji mengolah kembali minyak pelumas bekas SAE 15W-40 API CI-4 menjadi minyak pelumas bekas yang dapat dimanfaatkan untuk pelumas putaran rendah. Standar Nasional Indonesia (SNI) adalah standard acuan untuk produk dan jasa yang dipasarkan di dalam negeri maupun untuk keperluan ekspor, dengan demikian produk dan jasa yang berasal dari luar negeri harus memenuhi SNI apabila akan dipasarkan di Indonesia. Tujuan penelitian ini untuk mengetahui faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhi mutu produk yang dipasarkan, serta implementasi Sistem Manajemen Mutu (SMM) dalam rangka menjamin mutu (Quality Assurance) produk.  Penelitian ini mengambil kasus pemantauan mutu produk pelumas yang beredar pada tahun 2009, 2012 dan 2015 di pasaran wilayah Jabodetabek dan beberapa kota besar di Indonesia, yang dijual di SPBU maupun pengecer. Jenis pelumas yang diambil adalah minyak lumas mesin bensin empat langkah kendaraaan bermotor dengan tingkat mutu unjuk kerja API SG sampai dengan API SN. Makroalga mengandung senyawa alginat yang dapat digunakan dalam berbagai bidang industri. Alginat dapat diekstraksi dari makroalga dengan metode filtrasi dalam bentuk cake. Aspek yang dapat diperhatikan dari alginat secara khusus adalah specific cake resistance. Hal ini dapat mempengaruhi proses filtrasi, khususnya dari segi waktu filtrasi. Dalam mengoptimalkan proses filtrasi, diperlukan analisis neraca massa agar dapat diimplementasikan dengan kondisi operasi yang diinginkan. Simulasi sederhana proses filtrasi dengan menggunakan unit rotary vacuum filter pada perangkat lunak SuperPro Designer® digunakan dalam menentukan scale-up proses filtrasi pada unit tersebut. Analisis neraca massa menunjukkan bahwa cake yang dihasilkan memiliki perolehan alginat sebesar 77.35% dengan kemurnian 25.1%. Pemodelan specific cake resistance didapatkan melalui persamaan ln(𝛼)=5,956+ln⁡(𝑡/𝜇) Simulasi scale-up proses filtrasi pada RVF dilakukan dengan memberikan peningkatan pada laju alir masukan sebesar 1000 kali dalam waktu 330 hari dalam setahun, dapat menghasilkan natrium alginat sebesar 747.386,64 ton/tahun. Hasil tersebut disertai dengan peningkatan luas area filter menjadi 1043,3141 m², serta perolehan (yield) sebesar 77,35% dan tingkat kemurnian (purity) sebesar 25,098%.

ABSTRAK. Dalam penelitian ini, plastik PVC dibuat dengan mencampur resin PVC dan plasticizer epoksi metil oleat di dalam sebuah mixer dan dicetak dengan metode PVC coating. Plastik PVC yang terbentuk dan kantong darah komersial dikarakterisasi dengan mengukur sifat-sifat mekanik (kuat tarik dan regang ulur) dan sifat kelarutan plasticizer dalam metanol. Adapun plasticizer epoksi metil oleat dibuat melalui rangkaian proses esterifikasi, dan epoksidasi.

Lubricant from vegetable oils has characteristic of biodegradable, environmentally friendly and non toxic materials. The usage of biodegradable lubricant can reduce environment pollution. As a biggest palm oil producer, Indonesia has a big potential for developing of bio-lubricant from the oil. In this report, a laboratory result of a synthesis of a bio-lubricant base fluid from vegetable oil is reported.The reaction was a ring opening esterification by reacting epoxidized methyl oleate and lauric acid with presence of sulfuric acid and montmorillonite as catalysts. The bio-lubricant base fluid product was characterized using a variety analytical techniques including acid value, oxirane content, and lubricant properties to identify of its specification and classification. The results show that the process can reach minimum acid value and oxirane content were 9,72 and 0,02 respectively, and it is suitable for utilizing the prepared products for bio-lubricant base stock oil at group V.

This study deals with the removal of heavy metals (i.e., Co (II), Cu (II), Ni (II), Pb (II), Fe (III), Cd (II), Zn (II) and Mn (II)) from water with polymer-enhanced ultrafiltration using polyvinylamine (PVAm) as a complexing agent. At a PVAm dosage of 0.1 wt%, metal rejections as high as over 99% were achieved for Pb (II), Cu (II) and Fe (III). The coordination interactions between PVAm and the heavy metals were investigated using UV-vis spectral and conductometric analyses. It was shown that the performance of PEUF for metal rejection was related to the coordination interactions between PVAm and the heavy metals. It was also found that when divalent sulfate anions were present, the PVAm-metal complexes precipitated out of the solution at high metal concentrations. Thus PVAm could also be used as a flocculant for metal removal by flocculation.

The adsorption of poly(vinylformamide) (PVFA) and its derivative statistical copolymer poly(vinyl-formamide-covinylamine) (PVFA-co-PVAm) on metallic copper and copper oxide particles as well as planar copper surfaces was studied as a function of the degree of hydrolysis of PVFA, the pH, and the polymer concentration in solution. The chemical composition and molecular structure of the PVFA-co-PVAm layers were investigated by surface-sensitive spectroscopic methods such as XPS, DRIFT spectroscopy, and ellipsometry. The findings allowed us to explain the adsorption mechanisms and the forces driving the PVFA-co-PVAm adsorption. It was shown that PVFA-co-PVAm layers thicker than 30 nm are able to protect the planar copper surface against corrosive attack. Figure 1. This feasibility report is carried out to show the feasibility and viability of
establishing a proposed oil mill firm; Pela Oil Mill (Nig) enterprise which
would be sited at Ikot Atasung in Ikot Ekpene L.G.A of Akwa Ibom State.
The propose capital structure is one Million five Hundred thousand
Naira (1.500,000) only. 70% of the fund would be sourced through
promoters. while the remaining 30% would be source through Uniuyo
Microfinance bank at an interest rate of 36% annually. The repayment
period for both principal and interest would be 5 years.
Base on this projection for cost, the survey has shown that the
proposed firm would be gearing at such will provide a profitable return on
investment to it promoters.

Summary: The goal of this project is to design a Polymer-Enhanced Ultrafiltration (PEUF) process for the removal of heavy metals from waste water which is a relatively new and commercially untested membrane technology. The process will be designed to accommodate wastewater from manufacturing facilities, with the output adhering to and surpassing wastewater regulations so that it can be reused in the facility or safely be returned back to the environment.
In PEUF, the metal ion-polymer complexes in the wastewater are retained by the membrane whereas solutes with relatively lower mass pass through. The heavy metal ions are adsorbed by the water-soluble polymer which is subsequently isolated in the retention stream. By manipulating the pH, PEUF technology enables an enhanced recycling rate of polymer while ensuring wastewater is treated efficiently.
The ultrafiltration membrane selected is polyethersulfone or PES-10 from Sepro Membranes Inc. [Mitsui Chemicals Inc, 2004].The water-soluble complexing polymer used will be poly(vinyl formamide-co-vinylamine) or Lupamin 9095. The monomers consist of a large number of vinyl formamide which which are good electron donors in coordination with metal ions [Rivas, 2003]. Vinyl formamide is polymerized and then hydrolyzed to form Lupamin 9095, a linear high molecular weight polyvinylamine [BASF Corporation, 2002].
The group has completed a working simulation model on SuperPro Designer. The results of the modelling and a comprehensive analysis of the theoretical and economic performance of the selected design are disclosed in the final report . The likelihood of this project’s success is high, as any setbacks in modelling can be overcome with technical aptitude and effort.

This study deals with the removal of chromium species from aqueous dilute solutions using polymer-enhanced ultrafiltration (PEUF) process. Three water soluble polymers, namely chitosan, polyethyleneimine (PEI) and pectin were selected for this study. The ultrafiltration studies were carried out using a laboratory scale ultrafiltration system equipped with 500,000 MWCO polysulfone hollow fiber membrane. The effects of pH and polymer composition on rejection coefficient and permeate flux at constant pressure have been investigated. For Cr(III), high rejections approaching 100% were obtained at pH higher than 7 for the three tested polymers. With chitosan and pectin, Cr(VI) retention showed a slight increase with solution pH and did not exceed a value of 50%. An interesting result was obtained with PEI. The retention of Cr(VI) approached 100% at low pH and decreased when the pH was increased. This behavior is opposite to what one can expect in the polymer-enhanced ultrafiltration of heavy metals. Furthermore, the concentration of polymer was found to have little effect on rejection. Permeate flux remained almost constant around 25% of pure water flux.
