In the present case-control study of college-aged women, we examined the associations of sexual intercourse and diaphragm use with primary and secondary urinary tract infection (UTI), and measured the treatment and functional costs of primary, secondary, and recurrent UTI. All of the cases but only half of the controls had engaged in sexual intercourse during the past four weeks. The aim of this study was to test the efficacy of brief physician advice in reducing alcohol use and related harm in college students. The College Health Intervention Projects (CHIPs) is a randomized, controlled clinical trial with 12-month follow-up conducted in five college health clinics in Wisconsin; Washington state; and Vancouver, Canada. Of the 12,900 students screened for high-risk drinking, 484 men and 502 women met inclusion criteria and were randomized into a control (n = 493) or intervention (n = 493) group. Ninety-six percent of students participated in the follow-up procedures. The intervention consisted of two 15-minute counseling visits and two follow-up phone calls, and used motivational interviewing, contracting, diary cards, and take-home exercises. Medical students represent a significant community investment and promoting their health preserves this investment. In order to design health promotion programs for medical students in the United Arab Emirates, students' needs were assessed by means of a cross-sectional self-administered questionnaire survey. Major findings of the survey included: 14% of students were underweight while 24% of students were overweight or obese; the majority believed their activity levels were insufficient (77%), their stress levels too high (65%) and their diet unhealthy (50%); 33% were not sufficiently active to meet minimum recommended levels; few students (22%) had seen a doctor in the past year and many were unaware of important personal health parameters. When presented with hypothetical health situations, many made inappropriate choices. This survey identified significant healthpromotion opportunities for these students that can be carried out during medical school in order to establish a healthier physician population.

Though current hospital paging systems are neither efficient (callbacks disrupt workflow), nor secure (pagers are not Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act [HIPAA]-compliant), they are routinely used to communicate patient information. Smartphone-based text messaging is a potentially more convenient and efficient mobile alternative; however, commercial cellular networks are also not secure. To determine if augmenting one-way pagers with Medigram, a secure, HIPAA-compliant group messaging (HCGM) application for smartphones, could improve hospital team communication. Male athletes are frequent users of oral snuff and chewing tobacco, also known as smokeless or spit tobacco. (Note: Former US Surgeon General Antonia Novello recommended using spit rather than smokeless to prevent the impression that smokeless tobacco is harmless.) Studies have found smokeless tobacco prevalences of 52% to 55% and 26% to 36% among college varsity baseball and football players, respectively.'-4 Long-term use of smokeless tobacco increases risks of oral cancer,5 oral leukoplakia,6 periodontal disease,7 and, possibly, cardiovascular disease.8'9 Also, nicotine addiction may deter users of smokeless tobacco from quitting or lead them to use cigarettes or other sources of nicotine.'0 There are few published studies of smokeless tobacco cessation. Early studies using an adapted version of the American Cancer Society's "Fresh Start Program"" or small group counseling and telephone follow-up with male adolescents'2 reported quit rates at 6 months of 2.3% and 8%, respectively. These studies, however, were not ran-1-sided test in the presence of an intraclass correlation of .02 to account for the clustering effect of colleges 15,16 required 3 14 smokeless tobacco users, or 16 colleges with an average of 23 smokeless tobacco users per college, to achieve a power of .90.

In Taiwan, the immediate food and drink requirements of students and faculty members are satisfied by student cafeteria. The air quality within these student cafeteria should comply with the guidelines laid down by the Taiwan Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Accordingly, this study performed an experimental investigation into the efficiency of various chlorine dioxide applications in disinfecting a local student cafeteria (SC). The air quality before and after disinfection was evaluated in terms of the bioaerosol levels of bacteria and fungi. The average background levels of bacteria and fungi before disinfection were found to be 972.5 ± 623.6 CFU/m 3 and 1534.1 ± 631.8 CFU/m 3 , respectively. Chlorine dioxide was applied using two different methods, namely a single, one-off application, and twice applications within a single day. Among the two disinfection methods, the twice application method was found to yield a higher disinfection efficiency. Thus, using a ClO 2 disinfectant to maintain the air quality is of great importance to reduce infectious diseases in the student cafeteria. The average bacterial and fungus restraining rate for the sampling points are 64.05 % and 33.8 %, respectively. Therefore, the results suggest that the air quality guidelines prescribed by the Taiwan EPA for SCs and other healthcare facilities can best be achieved by applying chlorine dioxide at regular (twice/daily) intervals.

CONTEXT Doctors do not follow guidance when managing their own health and illness. This behaviour may start at medical school. This study aimed to investigate whether inappropriate responses to illness are an issue for medical students and, if so, to identify the determinants of students' responses to illness.

This paper reviews the work of the sports injury clinic based at the Student Health Centre, University of Manchester during its first eighteen months. A total of 852 patients including 46 Centre of Excellence athletes were treated. The results indicate that the establishment of such a specialised clinic is worthwhile, that the injured sportsmen should be treated by individuals trained and interested in the treatment of injured patients in general and that the commonest injuries are soft tissue injuries to the knee or ankle joint. A record card, designed for future computer analysis, is illustrated. It includes details of the sport, training, mechanism of injury, pathology and treatment. I NTRODUCTION During the past few years the number of attendances at the Student Health Centre at the University of Manchester increased steadily, some of this increase being due to sports injuries. These patients were referred to Accident and Emergency Departments at local hospitals for treatment, but there were often long waiting lists for physiotherapy and orthopaedic consultations. To obviate delays it was decided to establish a sports injury clinic at the Student Health Centre. The Department of Health and Social Security has stated that it has no commitment to sports medicine or the funding of specialised sports injury clinics (Davies, 1979) and, therefore, it was necessary to look elsewhere for funding such a clinic. With financial support from the Boots Company Ltd. the clinic was started in October 1978 as a joint venture between the Student Health Centre and the University Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. Four clinics a week are held in the Centre by members of the Orthopaedic Department. A full-time physiotherapist was appointed with an office in the Student Health Centre and a treatment room in the University indoor sports complex with access to a small gymnasium, multigym, large sports hall and swimming pool. From the onset, the efficient running of the service was due largely to the continuing interest and encouragement of the medical, nursing and secretarial staff of the Student Health Centre.

The New Jersey Collegiate Substance Abuse Program (NJCSAP) provided intensive substance abuse treatment to college students requiring treatment for severe substance use disorders. This study reports the progress of students who received 6 months of treatment at NJCSAP and participated in a research evaluation of the program. Overall, 74.5% of participants who completed the follow-up were abstinent at the 6-month assessment. Including participants who did not complete the follow-up as users yielded a 52.6% rate of abstinence. Students who completed the follow-up experienced decreases in the number of current psychiatric diagnoses met, depressive symptomatology, alcohol and drug problem severity, and family and psychiatric problem severity over the 6 month period. International travel is becoming ever more common, with greater numbers of people making more trips, increasingly to remote areas. In 1949 there were an estimated 26 million international tourists worldwide, of whom 1.7 million were from the United Kingdom, but by 1990 this had grown to 429 million and 31.2 million, respectively. By 1998 the total number of international tourists was 625 million, and this figure is expected to grow at around 4.3% for many years to come. 1 In light of this development, it is not surprising that travel medicine as a subject has grown in size and stature. In the United Kingdom, the role of providing travel health advice has been taken on to a large extent by the primary health care team, both for pragmatic reasons (such as proximity of providers to the patient and having the patient's medical record) as well as financial (in England and Wales various payments can be claimed for giving vaccines). The primary health care team seem happy with this role, 2 and there is some evidence that this also suits patients. 3,4 Primary health care is by nature a very diverse field, and it may therefore be anticipated that the quality of advice given varies widely. When travel medicine was in its infancy, this may have not been significant, but with the increasing numbers of travelers, the availability of expensive vaccines, and malaria chemoprophylaxis, the potential variation in standards becomes an important issue. Objective. To describe the development, implementation, and assessment of an introductory and an advanced pharmacy practice experience (IPPE and APPE) integrated within campus-based influenza clinics. Design. The influenza clinics were designed to incorporate the learning objectives for the IPPE and APPE, and included preparatory sessions, online learning, and direct patient interactions tailored to the appropriate education level of the learner. Assessment. The clinics provided influenza vaccinations to 2,292 and 2,877 individuals in 2010 and 2011, respectively. The clinics allowed for experiential education of 39 students earning a total of 467 IPPE and APPE hours in 2010 and 58 students earning a total of 656 IPPE and APPE hours in 2011. Third-year students were assessed before and after completing the IPPE, and improvement was seen in knowledge and self-ratings of perceptions and attitudes toward administering immunizations. Conclusions. Integrating pharmacy practice experiences within campus-based influenza clinics was an effective way to provide students with direct patient care experience and preventive health services knowledge.

Over many years Latin American universities have operated 'extension projects' in their surrounding communities. These projects, in health professions schools, frequently involved the establishment of community-based health centres operated by the university. Since the early 1970s, a large number of health professions schools entered into agreements with local or regional health systems for the operation of projects of 'articulation of teaching and services' in well-defined geographic areas. The primary health care strategy emphasized by W H O and actively promoted by national governments since the Alma Ata Declaration of 1978 led to a worldwide movement toward effective 'community participation' in each own local health system. An assessment of these initiatives, involving three types of paired relationships (university-community; university-local health system; local health system-community) provided the idea and the experiential basis for an innovative programme bringing the three partners together in a joint effort. Program UNT was set up and now includes 23 projects which are partially supported by the Kellogg Foundation. They all share a common set of ideas and ideals, emanating from the Alma Ata and Edinburgh Declarations, and are currently being implemented in 11 countries of Latin America.

The purpose of this article is to explore issues that pertain to the needs of gay men, lesbians, and bisexual and transgender (GLBT) students as a subgroup in U.S. dental schools. The increasing visibility of GLBT persons in all aspects of life is one aspect of the changing face of the U.S. population. Increasingly, there is dialogue about issues related to GLBT persons, their nontraditional families, and their full engagement in society. Recent court decisions, changing policies in states and municipalities, and increasing acceptance in society promote inclusion. Likewise, this dialogue has extended into academic life. In medicine and nursing, GLBT issues include the needs of GLBT patients, the mentoring of faculty and administration, and acculturation of students in a dynamic college environment. Faced with increasing demand and relatively static resources, community mental health facilities need to evaluate their functions in terms of time, cost, and performance effectiveness. For this study, the technology of systems analysis was applied to the functions of a progressive university counseling center. The systems analysis provided a management and information flow analysis and a time and cost analysis, as well as a performance analysis. This study focused on the preliminary results of the time, cost, and performance analysis. During the last five years, the emphasis in the delivery of mental health services has shifted from concern with severe mental illness to what may broadly be called positive mental health. Within the framework of crisis theory, which recognizes that all human beings experience periods of crisis and difficulties in functioning, this new emphasis focuses on immediate assistance to clients in crisis to prevent more serious disorders from developing. The major concern in innovative mental health programs is the quest for valid interventions that will prevent the development of emotional disorders and enhance the positive mental health of communities and their members (Rosenblum, 1971). BACKGROUND The University of Ghana Medical School (UGMS) Clinic provides healthcare service which is free at point of service to students, staff, retired staff and dependents of staff of the College of Health Sciences. However, since 1983, no in-depth review of health service provision or utilization has been undertaken. This study reviewed client characteristics, utilization and disease patterns at the clinic and also compared the disease patterns to that of other primary health facilities nationwide. METHODS This was an analytical cross-sectional study undertaken at the UGMS clinic in Korle-Bu. It was a retrospective review of records of all clients attending the facility from January 2002 to December, 2004. RESULTS More males than females attended the clinic and majority (63.9%) of clients were between 15-44 years (median age was 26 years). Introduction. University programs in the health-care field are challenging and their routines are exhausting. Therefore, they create stress and a potential negative psychological impacts on students. This study’s objective was to determine the prevalence and factors associated with anxiety and depression in students in the health-care field. Methodology: A cross-sectional study applied to Medical, Nursing and Pharmaceutical Chemistry students from a Colombian university, who anonymously and voluntarily completed a form with sociodemographic data and the Goldberg Anxiety and Depression Scale. Logistic regression was performed: anxiety or depression (dependent variables) and sociodemographic characteristics (independent variables); p < 0.05, statistically significant. Results Six hundred and ninety-seven young adults participated, whose ages ranged between 20.3±1.7. Forty-three point six percent studied Medicine, 26.2% Pharmaceutical Chemistry and 30.1% Nursing. Anxiety was identified in 49.8% (95% confidence interval:46.0-53.4) and depression in 80.3% (95% confidence interval:77.2-83.1). Studying Medicine, Nursing, being female, overweight and underweight, having previously had a psychological or psychiatric consultation, taking permanent medication and suffering from a chronic disease are all associated with a higher presence of anxiety. Being from a rural area was associated with greater depression. Discussion. The findings show a high prevalence of symptoms of anxiety and depression in the group of university students in the health-care field. Even though the scale that was used does not perform diagnoses, it does suggest the existence of pathological manifestations. Psychosocial factors were associated, especially in juvenile environments. Similar situations have been indicated by various authors. Conclusion. Anxiety was identified in half of the students and depression was identified in eight of every ten. El objetivo de este estudio fue determinar la prevalencia y los factores asociados a la ansiedad y a la depresión en estudiantes del área de la salud. Metodología. Estudio de tipo transversal aplicado a estudiantes de Medicina, Enfermería y Química Farmacéutica de una universidad colombiana que diligenciaron anónima y voluntariamente un formulario con datos sociodemográficos y, a su vez, la Escala de Ansiedad y Depresión de Goldberg. Se realizó regresión logística: ansiedad o depresión (variable dependiente) y las características sociodemográficas (independientes); p<0.05, estadísticamente significativo. Resultados. Los participantes corresponden a 697 jóvenes, cuyas edades oscilan entre 20.3±1.7. El 43.6% estudiaba Medicina, el 26.2% Química Farmacéutica y el 30.1% Enfermería. Se identificó ansiedad en el 49.8% (intervalo de confianza 95%:46.0-53.4) y depresión en el 80.3% (intervalo de confianza 95%:77.2-83.1). Estudiar Medicina, Enfermería, ser de sexo femenino, padecer de sobrepeso e infrapeso, haber tenido consulta previa psicológica o psiquiátrica, tener medicación permanente y sufrir de alguna enfermedad crónica, se asocia a mayor presencia de ansiedad. Proceder de zonas rurales se asoció a mayor depresión. Discusión. Los hallazgos muestran alta prevalencia de síntomas de ansiedad y depresión en el grupo de jóvenes universitarios del área de la salud. Si bien la escala utilizada no hace diagnóstico, sí sugiere la existencia de manifestaciones patológicas. Factores psicosociales, sobre todo del entorno juvenil, estuvieron asociados. Situaciones similares han sido señaladas por diferentes autores. Conclusiones. Se identificó ansiedad en la mitad de los estudiantes y depresión en ocho de cada diez.
