Spanish Television Drama

Resumen: El presente artículo, partiendo de los más recientes estudios sobre el discur-so telecinemático, pretende contribuir a la investigación en el ámbito de la lingüística aplicada a las series televisivas, las cuales constituyen uno de los productos culturales populares más influyentes en la sociedad contemporánea. El corpus de estudio está compuesto por los guiones completos de la exitosa serie Águila Roja, emitida por Radio Televisión Española entre 2009 y 2016. Compaginando técnicas de la lingüística de corpus y del análisis del discurso, este estudio examina la caracterización de Sátur, uno de los personajes principales de la ficción, a través de la co-construcción del significado elaborada por la audiencia televisiva. Los resultados sugieren que el discurso del per-sonaje está caracterizado por el uso del registro coloquial contemporáneo y por incon-gruencias y anacronismos, rasgos que crean humor y familiaridad con los espectadores. This article treats the unusually rich 2009 spring season of television fiction in Spain, placing it in the broader context of migration between the two media of film and TV and the continuing importance of cultural proximity in an era of transnational production. Beginning with a survey of the current TV ecology, it goes on to treat four innovative and popular titles: miniseries 23 F: El día más difícil del Rey/The King's Most Difficult Day, and series Águila Roja/Red Eagle, Pelotas/Balls (all from Televisión Española), and Doctor Mateo (Antena 3). It argues that these fictions share three themes: The continuing exploration of Spanish national history, both distant and recent; the fractured family, particularly caused by missing mothers; nostalgia for close community, whether its location is urban or rural.

This article gives a general account of the science fiction series often acclaimed as the best in the history of Spanish television. It offers a close reading of the excellent book by Concepción Cascajosa Virino. And it identifies three key themes in the series: nationalism, novelty in a Spanish context, and trans media strategy.

This edited volume examines the historical, political, cultural, and aesthetic implications of re-visiting Restoration Spain (1874-1931) in television costume dramas produced since 2000. Contributors analyze, from different theoretical approaches and disciplinary perspectives, the appeal that the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries hold for twenty-first-century Spanish audiences, as well as for international viewers who consume these programs through new media platforms. Themes and issues explored include: the production of televisual heritage, representations of period technologies, evolving constructions of gender, hybridization of television genres, and television as historian. Expanding the scope of inquiry in Spanish media studies, this collection seeks to bring Spain into wider discussions of media and historical representation and visual and material culture in Europe, the Americas, and beyond.

In this chapter, Tang examines the role of turn-of-the-century technologies within the narrative and staging of the international hit series Gran Hotel (Grand Hotel; Bambú Producciones, 2011-2013). As she argues, onscreen period technology serves to familiarize global audiences with Restoration Spain in three key ways: firstly, by refuting the long-standing stereotype of Spain as a historically backwards nation; secondly, by highlighting universally familiar themes of Restoration society, such as class conflict or the modernizing impulse; and finally, by appealing to twenty-first-century technophiles who recognize the importance of technological innovation in their own lives. Tang concludes that through these functions, the technology featured in Gran Hotel serves to present the Restoration period as a universally legible and visually appealing setting.  

El género histórico es uno de los más longevos en la historia de la televisión española, pero desde comienzos del siglo xxi se ha convertido en uno de los que tiene mayor presencia en la parrilla de programación. Considerando que el acceso al conocimiento de la Historia se aleja cada vez más de los libros y recae en el audiovisual, las ficciones históricas se revelan como un valioso instrumento de difusión a un público masivo. No obstante, buena parte de las series españolas que se presumen históricas utilizan el pasado como mero telón de fondo de la trama y presentan notables anacronismos en el guión. A diferencia de estas producciones, Isabel (TVE, 2012-2014) constituye un ejercicio paradigmático de “ficción histórica”, ya que preserva el rigor histórico, sin descuidar el tono de entretenimiento propio de una dramaturgia televisiva. Los objetivos de esta investigación son: ofrecer una panorámica de la evolución del serial histórico en la televisión española; establecer una clasificación de los diferentes tipos de ficciones de tema histórico; y, como caso particular, determinar cómo se articula la representación del pasado en Isabel.
