Este trabalho avaliou alterações das propriedades físicas teor de água, densidade e porosidade do solo em áreas sob sistemas de semeadura direta e preparo convencional nas culturas de soja e milho em três anos agrícolas. O experimento foi instalado no Núcleo Experimental de Engenharia Agrícola da Unioeste (Cascavel, Estado do Paraná). Nos dois primeiros anos foi implantada a cultura de soja; no terceiro ano, milho, como cultura de verão, e aveia preta e nabo forrageiro, como cobertura de inverno. Durante os três anos, foram observados redução do teor de água e densidade do solo e aumento da porosidade. As variações nas propriedades físicas do solo mostraram relação diretamente proporcional entre teor de água e densidade do solo e inversamente para porosidade. O solo apresentou melhorias nas condições físicas pelo acréscimo de porosidade e redução de densidade com as culturas de aveia preta+nabo forrageiro e milho. O manejo soja/milho em rotação com aveia preta+nabo forrageiro mostrou-se mais adequado na melhoria das condições físicas do solo do que os sistemas de manejo, uma vez que nenhum dos sistemas teve maior destaque na melhoria das propriedades físicas avaliadas em todo o período. Physical properties in distrofic Red Latosol under management systems in the succession soybean-maize in three years. This study evaluated alterations in the physical properties water content, soil density and porosity in areas under no tillage and tillage systems in the cultures of soybean and maize in three agricultural years. The experiment was carried out at the Experimental Nucleus of Agricultural Engineering of Unioeste (Cascavel, state of Paraná). Soybean culture occurred in the first two years and in the third year maize, as summer crop, black oats and forage turnip as winter cover crops.. During these three years the study observed reduction of water content and soil density and increase of porosity . The variations as regards the physical properties of the soil showed direct proportional relation between water content and soil density and was in inverse proportion for soil porosity. The soil presented improvements on its physical conditions for the porosity increase and density reduction with the black oats and forage turnip crops and maize. The soybean/maize management in rotation with black oats and forage turnip showed more adequate in the improvement of the physical conditions of the soil as compared with the management systems, since neither of the systems had a major impact in the improvements of the physical properties evaluated throughout this whole period.

Ground-based timber harvesting systems are common throughout many regions of the United States. Machine movements during harvesting can negatively impact soils leading to increased erosion and soil compaction. This is especially true of skid trails that have been established to facilitate tree removals. Several techniques have the potential to reduce soil compaction including corduroying skid trails with slash or using equipment exerting lower ground pressures. Typical measures of compaction include bulk density and mechanical resistance. Bulk density measurements require destructive sampling and are time consuming while mechanical resistance measurements are highly variable due to soil type, moisture content, and operator consistency. A research project was designed to accomplish two objectives: 1) compare and contrast conventional measures of soil compaction with a newer technique using soil stress residuals, and 2) compare the effects of slash versus bare soil on skid trails trafficked by a rubber-tired grapple skidder and a dozer. The project was conducted within an upland hardwood/pine stand in the Ridge and Valley physiographic region. This paper discusses the results from the new technique using soil stress residuals to account for changes in soil properties. This technique provided results with less intensive setup and analysis than conventional methods.

SUMMARY Radiocarbon dating is one of the main methods used to establish peat chronologies. This article reviews the basis of the method and its application to dating of peat deposits. The objective of this study was to determine direct and indirect effects of some soil properties on soil penetration resistance. The experimental field was gridded with 80 m intervals in the E-W and N-S directions, and soil penetration resistance was measured at 72 intersections using a penetrologger. Soil samples from upper and lower soil layers were also taken at the same points for determining physical and chemical soil properties. The results of study indicated that the highest direct effect to upper soil layer compaction was sand, silt and clay content and the lowest was bulk density. On the other hand, the highest direct effect to subsoil layer compaction was bulk density and lowest was clay content.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a distribuição espacial de alguns atributos físicos do solo e verificar suas alterações no desenvolvimento da seringueira consorciada com leguminosas. O experimento foi instalado em Argissolo Vermelho-Amarelo no Polo Regional de Desenvolvimento Tecnológico dos Agronegócios do Centro-Norte, localizado em Pindorama (SP). O solo sob plantio direto (PD) sofre alterações ocasionados pela mínima mobilização e pelo tráfego de máquinas. Laboratory tests have been carried out to investigate the response of 2x2 pile group subjected to triangular soil movement. The pile group was instrumented with displacement and tilting devices at the pile cap and strain gauges on two piles of the group. In this paper, results from four model tests were presented to study the effects of axial loads and soil density on the lateral behavior of piles. The responses in terms of bending moment, shear force, soil pressure, deflection, and rotation of piles were compared. Test results indicate that increasing the soil strength could increase the measured moment, shear, soil pressure, and pile deformations. Most importantly, adding loads to the pile cap induces additional moment to the head of front-pile row unlike the back-pile row which was influenced insignificantly.

O trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar o impacto do tipo de uso do solo sobre seus atributos físicos e químicos do solo, considerando os usos com cultivo de eucalipto e pastagem degradada, em diferentes posições topográficas. Foram realizadas amostragens nas profundidades de 0,00 - 0,20 m e 0,20 - 0,40 m distribuídas de forma eqüidistantes, distanciando-se em 10 metros na linha e 25 metros entre as linhas, e as posições topográficas foram locadas em relação ao sentido de declive do terreno. Foram utilizadas duas áreas distintas, apresentando a mesma unidade de solo (Latossolo Vermelho-Amarelo distrófico e relevo forte ondulado), vizinhas entre si e com histórico de cultivo de pastagem de baixa capacidade tecnológica, de no mínimo 50 anos, havendo sido implantado um povoamento de eucalipto há cinco anos numa das áreas descritas. As posições topográficas delimitadas por terços foram avaliadas, sendo: TS = terço superior, TM = terço médio; e TI = terço inferior, ao longo do declive. Os atributos físicos e químicos do solo em estudo foram analisados segundo um delineamento inteiramente casualizado distribuído em esquema de parcelas subdivididas 2x2x3, tendo nas parcelas um fatorial 2X2, sendo 2 tipos de uso do solo (eucalipto e
pastagem) e 2 profundidades (0,00 - 0,20 e 0,20 - 0,40 m) do solo e nas subparcelas as posições topográficas (TS = terço superior, TM = terço médio e TI = terço inferior), com oito repetições. Os resultados das biomassas foram analisados considerando-se o delineamento inteiramente casualizado distribuído em esquema de parcelas subdivididas 2x3, tendo nas parcelas 2 tipos de uso do solo (eucalipto e
pastagem) e nas subparcelas 3 posições topográficas (TS = terço superior, TM = terço médio e TI = terço inferior), com oito repetições. Os dados experimentais foram submetidos à análise de variância pelo teste “F” e, quando significativo, foi aplicado o teste de Tukey ao nível de 5% de probabilidade, por meio do software SAEG 9.1. Os resultados demonstram que a maioria dos atributos dos solos estudados é influenciada pelo tipo de uso do solo e a posição de amostragem, apresentando-se como importantes indicadores de mudanças na qualidade do solo.
A implantação de cultivo de eucalipto em áreas de pastagem degradada promove efeitos nos atributos do solo, principalmente em relação à quantidade de água disponível, e a interação entre os fatores estudados são fundamentais para avaliação das reais condições dos solos cultivados com pastagem e eucalipto.
Dessa forma, para avaliação de atributos do solo, em condições de relevo forte ondulado, faz-se necessária a divisão das áreas em posições topográficas, como em terços (terço superior, médio e inferior), em função das diferenças associadas aos solos existentes ao longo do declive, principalmente quando se trata de áreas declivosas, como a região do Sul do Estado do Espírito Santo.

Soil compaction is a widespread degradation process in forest sites. Soil degradation occurring on the structural formation of a natural soil system by rainfall or mechanical outer forces generally results in soil particles to be rearranged tighter than its previous status. In this case, soil compaction -defined as the increase in bulk density of soil- develops with negative effects on soil-plant-water relations. With the compaction, the density of soil increases while the porosity rate decreases, creating a harder formation in soil and consequently lower degree of hydraulic conductivity. Higher soil compaction usually occurs in densely used places including recreational areas, settlements, logged forests, fruit gardens, agro-forestry systems and nurseries. Productivity of two common osier (Salix viminalis L.) plantations in two different regions of Lithuania was marginally studied in 2014. The regions where the studies on common osier plantations have been done differed in soil groups. For that, the main importance of the study was to identify soil group typological parameters as well as to describe soil chemical characteristics. Further, it was important to estimate the volume of common osier biomass and to assess the impact of different soil parameters on osier biomass productivity. The obtained results let to exclude the importance of soil group as well as of soil typological unit on the productivity of common osier plantations in different regions. Thus, it was found that soil density is the main factor influencing the growth of common osier and it was optimal in studied Histosol (in South West of Lithuania). However, organic carbon and total nitrogen concentrations were the main parameters having impact on common osier productivity in Arenosols (in Western Lithuania).

The aim of this study was to evaluate the seasonal variation of the attributes of soil quality indicators in areas of pasture planted with Brachiaria, Tifton 85 and Suazi in the municipality of Itaperuna, RJ, Brazil. The experimental design was completely randomized split plot with six replications. Soil samples were collected during the dry season (August 2004) and the rainy season (December 2004). These were evaluated in relation aggregate stability, using the mean weight diameter (MWD) and the proportion of stable aggregates (% AGRI) in water > 2.00 mm, the total organic carbon (TOC), the carbon from the humin fraction (C-HUM), carbon of humic acid fraction (C-FAH) and fulvic (C-FAF). In addition, samples were also collected for quantification of root dry matter (DM). Sustainable agriculture needs appropriate management of water, chemicals and heat in soil. In this study, we focused on thermal conductivity, which is among the various soil physical properties that are crucial for the sustainable management of agricultural fields. To expand the Mochizuki model, which describes thermal conductivity as a function of water content and solution concentration, we considered the water content, solution concentration and temperature as independent variables. The thermal conductivity of Tottori dune sand was measured under conditions of various combinations of these three independent variables. We observed that the thermal conductivity increased linearly with increasing water content, 0.054-0.276 m 3 m −3 , for fixed temperature and solution concentration, and varied linearly with solution concentration for fixed temperature and water content. These results are consistent with the Mochizuki model. Using the Mochizuki model, the experimental parameters, which are dependent variables of water content and solution concentration, are shown as functions of water content. From regression analyses of the relationships between the experimental parameters and temperature, we expanded the Mochizuki model into a new practical formula that quantifies the soil thermal conductivity as a function of water content, solution concentration and temperature.

O trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar o desenvolvimento da parte aérea e do sistema radicular de mudas de aceroleira (Malpighia emarginata D.C.) propagadas por sementes e por estacas, sob níveis de compactação subsuperficial de solo. Foram montados vasos com 200 mm de diâmetro e 285 mm de altura, divididos em três anéis sobrepostos de 100, 35 e 150 mm. O solo do anel intermediário foi submetido a quatro níveis de densidade (1,0; 1,2 1,4 e 1,6kg dm-3). O experimento foi conduzido com delineamento experimental de blocos ao acaso, num esquema fatorial de 2 x 4 (duas formas de propagação e quatro densidades de solo), com cinco repetições. O aumento da densidade do solo propicia um maior desenvolvimento da parte aérea e raízes das mudas propagadas por estacas em relação às propagadas por sementes. Independente da forma de propagação utilizada, os níveis de densidade do solo avaliados não impedem a penetração das raízes de aceroleira.

The paper investigated the effects of ground-based skidding on soil physical properties. For this purpose, soil disturbance following skidding was assessed for four levels of traffic intensity and three levels of slope gradients; each combination replicated three times. Soil samples were collected from the depth interval of 0-10 cm before and after traffic with a Timberjack 450C skidder in control areas and on skid trails. All soil response measures revealed detrimental compaction and porosity conditions in the skid trails, particularly on steep slopes >20%. The results clearly showed that most of the potential impact occurred after the initial passes. Substantial increases in bulk density appeared right after the first two skidder passes on steep slopes. Regardless of traffic intensity, however, dry bulk density and microporosity increased and total porosity, macroporosity, void ratio and soil moisture content decreased considerably regardless of slope gradient. Effective skid-trail design requires a solid understanding of vehicle-soil interactions, yet virtually no data exist on the effects of harvest traffic on soils in the switchback curves common in mountainous terrain. We contrast for the first time the effect of skidding on dry bulk density, total porosity, macroporosity, and microporosity in the straight segments of the skid trail and in various positions within switchbacks of differing trail curvature (deflection angle) on different slope gradients. Treatment plots with three replications included combinations of two classes of curvature (narrow = high deflection angle, 60–70°; wide = low deflection angle, 110–130°) and two categories of slope gradient (gentle = ≤20%; steep = >20%). Several studies investigated soil disturbances caused on skid trails by forest logging. However, there is still a lack of knowledge about the severity and the distance of disturbances along both sides from the trails. The main purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of skidding operations on the physical and chemical properties of soil as well as root and height growth of maple seedlings. Treatment plots with three replications included combinations of three levels of traffic frequency (three, eight, and 16 passes of a rubber-tired skidder Timberjack 450C) and two levels of trail gradient (B20 and [20 %) to quantify soil disturbance and corresponding seedling growth. Significant differences between undisturbed areas and machine trail areas of bulk density (0.75 vs. 1.26 g cm-3), total porosity (70.6 vs. 50.4 %), macroporosity (44.5 vs. 18.5 %), microporosity (26.1 vs. 31.8 %), moisture content (50.0 vs. 31.3 %), and forest floor biomass (3498 vs. 1271 kg ha-1) were strongly related to the level of traffic frequency and the trail gradient. Similarly, skidding caused significant reductions in the amount of soil OC (by 41 %), concentrations of nitrogen (53 %), phosphorous (28 %), potassium (31 %), and soil acidity (40 %) compared to undisturbed areas. Finally, germination rate, root length, and stem height of seedlings were inversely related to compaction. Physical and chemical soil properties are often significantly impacted by skidding operations, depending on trail gradient and traffic frequency, which resulted in restrictions to seedling growth.

Skidding by means of heavy forestry machinery can affect soil physical properties. We assessed the effects of ground based skidding on soil bulk density and total porosity under the Iranian mountainous forest conditions. Treatments included a combination of four levels of traffic intensity (1, 3, 6, and 15 passes) of a Timberjack 450C rubber skidder and two levels of slope (<20 % and >20 %). The bulk density was highest in samples taken in the wheel tracks and between them, and decreased towards both ends of the track (0.5 to 4 m). The results showed that bulk density increased with traffic frequency, while total porosity decreased. Average soil bulk density ranged from 0.96 g cm-3 (after one machine pass and slope <20 %) up to 1.41 g cm–3 (after 15 machine passes and slope >20 %) on the skid trail, while the respective value was 0.7 g cm–3 for the undisturbed area. Critical limits of soil bulk density (BD), considering ecological properties, such as porosity and hydraulic conductivity, or crop growth and yield, have been pursued. Nevertheless, optimal and critical limits of soil bulk density for crop growth depend upon soil texture, mineralogy, particle shape, and organic matter, which affect soil structure and, thus, water, air and mechanical resistance of the soil. RESUMO A resistência à penetração permite avaliar o comportamento do solo diante do manejo adotado. Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar o comportamento da resistência à penetração nos períodos seco e chuvoso por meio da variabilidade espacial em uma área degradada em Gilbués, PI. O estudo foi conduzido em uma área experimental de 4 ha, pertencente à Embrapa Meio Norte, no período de 2010/2011. O solo da área é um Neossolo Litólico Eutrófico com exposição do horizonte C. The technology of differentiated soil tillage contributes significantly reduction of costs and energy along with ecological requirements. Different soil tillage technologies have a different effect on the physical state of soil. Different soil tillage technologies – ploughing , deep loosening (0.30 m by deep cultivator) , no-till, loosening (0.25 m by chisel cultivator) , strip-till were compared. The results showed a positive influence of strip tillage . It is a compromise between the traditional technology and intensive loosening and sowing into untilled soil. The strip being loosened affects positively the physical properties of the soil and facilitates maize stand establishment and its development. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a distribuição espacial de alguns atributos físicos do solo e verificar suas alterações no desenvolvimento da seringueira consorciada com leguminosas. O experimento foi instalado em Argissolo Vermelho-Amarelo no Polo Regional de Desenvolvimento Tecnológico dos Agronegócios do Centro-Norte, localizado em Pindorama (SP). Foram avaliadas: infiltração de água a 0,10 e a 0,20 m de profundidade, macro e micro porosidade e densidade do solo nas camadas 0-0,10; 0,10-0,20; 0,20-0,40 e 0,40-0,60 m. Para identificar alternativas ao manejo intensivo com grades de discos, avaliaram-se, entre 1987 e 2003, efeitos de sistemas de manejo do solo na produtividade de soja, milho e trigo e em atributos de um Latossolo Vermelho Distroferrico muito argiloso, localizado na sede da Embrapa Agropecuaria Oeste, em Dourados, MS. Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi determinar o tempo de duração do efeito da descompactação do solo, por escarificação mecânica, por meio de indicadores físico-hídricos de Latossolo argiloso, manejado em sistema plantio direto (SPD). Os tratamentos consistiram em meses (0, 6, 12, 18, 24, 30 e 36) transcorridos após escarificação mecânica em SPD e em testemunha sem escarificação em SPD há 27 anos. Foram avaliadas as variáveis: resistência mecânica à penetração, taxa de infiltração de água no solo, densidade e densidade relativa do solo, distribuição do tamanho de poros e condutividade hidráulica do solo saturado. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito da intensidade de tráfego e do sistema de manejo na demandade tração de umahaste sulcadora deadubo,e naspropriedadesfísicas de umArgissoloVermelho-Amarelo. Os tratamentos foram: semeadura direta com tráfego natural, semeadura direta com tráfego adicional de intensidade de 24,79 Mg km ha-1, semeadura direta com tráfego adicional de intensidade de 49,59 Mg km ha-1, cultivo mínimo e cultivo mínimo em solo compactado com tráfego de 24,67 Mg km ha-1. O objetivo com a realização deste trabalho foi estudar o comportamento espacial da erodibilidade de um Latossolo Vermelho Amarelo húmico, por meio de mapas de distribuição e incerteza, utilizando métodos de krigagem. O experimento foi realizado em uma área cultivada com Coffea arabica L. variedade catuaí. O solo foi coletado na camada de 0-0,20 m distribuídos em uma malha amostral, totalizando 50 pontos. Avaliou-se a erodibilidade por meio de modelos indiretos, com base nas frações granulométricas do solo e no teor de matéria orgânica. Os dados foram, inicialmente, submetidos à análise descritiva e exploratória. A análise geoestatística foi utilizada sobre o conjunto real de dados e também sobre os dados de erodibilidade após codificação por indicação. Os resultados foram interpolados por krigagem ordinária e krigagem indicativa para a confecção de mapas de distribuição e incertezas. O valor médio de erodibilidade ficou acima do tolerado para Latossolos, sendo que na maior proporção da área a probabilidade de encontrar valores de erodibilidade acima do tolerado para Latossolos foi maior que 50%, principalmente nas porções mais altas do terreno.

This study investigated soil compaction, caused by tree felling and ground based forest harvesting operations, in sandy loamy brown forest soil, located in mixed forest stand harvesting units. In the study area, conventional forest harvesting is still practiced and this resulted in considerable soil compaction. As the forests are on the mountainous landscape, ground skidding is carried out by human, animal or tractor power. The impacts of harvesting operations in felling and skidding areas on soil compaction were assessed in this study. Thirty nine sample areas were taken for two soil depths (0-5 cm and 5-10 cm) before and after tree felling and ground skidding activities measuring 7 samples for each, in four different stands. Soil compactions at logged areas were nearly two times greater than the unlogged areas, except tree felling values at 5-10 cm depth.

Pavements are constructed on compacted soils that are typically unsaturated. The negative pore-water pressure (soil suction) due to the ingress of water in between soil particles has a significant effect on pavement foundation stiffness and strength. The study characterized the effects of soil suction on shear strength and resilient modulus of four soils representing different regions of Minnesota. The deviator stress in shear strength measurements followed a power function relationship with soil suction. Resilient modulus also followed the power function relationship with suction but these relationships fell within a narrow range. We present models for incorporating suction effects in shear strength and resilient modulus measurements of highly compacted subgrade soils. We also briefly outline a framework for incorporating these models in the resistance factors of MnPAVE. Since soil water content and the resulting soil suction under the pavement varies with season, adjustments are needed to account for increased strength and stiffness of the material as a result of unsaturated soil conditions. These adjustments will not only reflect the more realistic field conditions but will result in more reliable performance predictions than the current pavement design method.

This study aimed to assess the potential of twelve cover crops in improving the structural state of the soil evaluating soil bulk density and soil resistance to penetration and their effects on crambe grain yield and oil content. The experiment was conducted at the Experimental Center of Agricultural Engineering (NEEA), at the State University of West Paraná (UNIOESTE)-Cascavel-Paraná. The cover crops were named as treatments and consisted of twelve species, namely: Crotalaria juncea, Crotalaria spectabilis, Pigeon pea, Jack bean, Foxtail millet, Forage sorghum, Lablab beans, Guandu beans, Mucuna aterrimum, Mucuna Pruriens, Mucuna deeringiana, Mucuna aterrima, and a control treatment (fallow area). The experimental design used consisted of randomized blocks with four replications and plots measuring 5 x 5 m. When species were in full bloom in May 2010, they were managed by desiccation with non-selective herbicide and subsequent mowing in order to accelerate the decomposition rate of their roots. In August 2011 we performed the planting of crambe for further analysis of its grain and oil yield. In January 2012 soil samples were collected to evaluate soil bulk density by the volumetric ring method at depths of 0.0-0.1, 0.1-0.2 and 0.2-0.3 m. Soil resistance to penetration was determined using a penetrometer until 0.4 m deep. In order to determine crambe grain yield, crambe was collected in an area of 4 m 2 in the central part of each plot. In ordet tor determe seed oil content it was used the Soxhlet method. The statistical analyzes for soil variables (soil penetration density and resistance) and plant (grain yield and oil yield) consisted of analysis of variance (ANOVA), with a comparison test of mean values. It was also performed linear regression analyzes between data concerning to grain yield and oil yield, as well as grain yield and bulk density. The species Crotalaria spectabilis and Mucuna aterrima provided a significant reduction in soil bulk density when compared to the fallow area, showing higher structuring potential than other species after the first year of use. Considering the structural state of the soil prior to the experiment, with bulk density values lower than 1.2 Mg m-3 , there was no significant effect on soil structure by any of the coverage species used and there was also no beneficial effect on crambe grain yield and oil content.
