The article deals with the informative value of a sentence from the The Conversio Bagoariorum et Carantanorum from 871, which is the only source documenting the connection between Pribina and Nitra. The sentence "Cui quondam Adalrammus archiepiscopus ultra Danubium in sua proprietate loco vocato Nitrava consecravit ecclesiam" has long raised doubts about its authenticity, as it does not fit into the narrative of the 11 th chapter of the source. The study thus addresses three key questions, namely whether this sentence was originally a marginalia, in which manuscript the sentence about Nitrava first appeared, and whether there are reasonable reasons to question the credibility of this sentence. Based on a very detailed analysis, it is clear that the sentence was indeed originally a marginalia, on which there is, after all, a relatively broad consensus in historiography, including Slovak. The sentence probably first appeared as a marginalia in the original manuscript. As for reasonable reasons to question the credibility of this information, it is very likely that Pribina's Nitra origin was a historical fact.

Historiographic Features in Staré noviny literního umění Newspaper (1785 – 1786)

The study explores in detail the depiction of the past, the popularization of history, and its instrumentation in the periodical Staré noviny literního umění (1785 – 1786). We have also traced the sources of knowledge, the form of access to information and its use. The newspa-per contains many articles related to the depiction of the past. They mention ancient and biblical personalities (rulers, philosophers, etc.), while presenting texts about contemporary applications of historical events (mainly along the lines of pragmatic historiography or prac-tical philosophy). The articles also addressed various phenomena of world history, ethno-graphic descriptions of foreign ethnicity or cultures; besides, they include an interesting re-view of the contemporary work of Juraj Papánek on the history of the Slovaks.

The ruler of Great Moravia Svatopluk is one of the most outstanding personalities of Central European space in the 9th century. His death led to a relatively quick decline and demise of the Great Moravian Empire so it can be seen as a historical milestone. Medieval chronicles record legends and myths depicting different versions of his death. The paper focuses on the reflection of Svatopluk's death within the texts of Slovak literature. Individual authors work with this motive differently. We notice the intertextual connections of modern texts with medieval narrative sources.

The increased interest in Late Antiquity is reinforced by several changes, such as the climate crisis, migration waves or the awareness of the decline and decadence of the present. Often interpreted as a time of decline, chaos and extinction, Late Antiquity represents a kind of spectre of contemporary Western civilisation. The reason for viewing Late Antiquity as a period of decline and decay can be sought in the interpretations of historians. However, even here we can see some progress, as there is a clear shift from a mindset of decline and extinction to one of gradual transformation of the Roman Empire. In the article we analysed the views and interpretations of scholars dealing with the period of Late Antiquity in the territory of Slovakia. In addition to the end of Roman antiquity, the article assesses how academics have interpreted or evaluated the development of the Central Danube region in the Late Roman period and in the period of the Migration of Nations. The article focuses on the analysis of works dealing with these events, whether they are more general overviews within the framework of historical developments or also partial studies written by Slovak scholars.

The oldest mention of Bishop Beszteréd (Bystrík) (?-1046) can be found in the great legend of St. Gellért, which dates back to the so-called 1046 deals with pagan insurrection - the Hungarian literature has not yet devoted a larger study. The problem of this presumably Nitra bishop, which is commented on in detail in the baroque historiography of the Nitra area, was revived in the first half of the 20th century, but we cannot say that it has been solved to this day. This study attempts to do so. But it's not easy.

Beszteréd (?-1046) püspök személyénekakiről a legrégibb említést a Szent Gellért nagy legendájában találjuk, amely az 1046-os ún. pogány felekléssel foglalkozik-a magyar szakirodalom eddig nem szentelt nagyobb terjedelmű tanulmányt. Ennek a feltehetően nyitrai püspöknek a problémaköre, melyet főleg a Nyitra környéki, ahhoz kötődő barokk történetírás részletesen kommentál, a 20. század első felében ugyan újra feléledt, de a mai napig nem állíthatjuk, hogy megoldódott volna. E tanulmány erre tesz kísérletet. De ez nem könnyű.

Na margo toho pražský rabín Efraim Karol Sidon uviedol, že Žid "môže sa chovať ako chce, ale vždy bude vedieť, k čomu sa nehlási. Čo opustil. Kultúru, ktorú-márna vecvytváral Pán Boh. A Žid sa musí rozhodnúť: buď sa vráti, alebo zostane mimo seba" (Zvelebil 1994: 19). 2 Na základe svojich výskumov Oľga Gyárfášová skonštatovala: "Potvrdzuje sa teda hypotéza, že medzigeneračná komunikácia, odovzdávanie životných skúseností a vedomostí, skrátka odovzdávanie pamäti rodiny, nie je u nás veľmi rozšírené" (Gyárfášová 2015: 30). 13 12 Rabín Kapustin je zamestnancom ÚZŽNO a jeho pôsobiskom je celé územie Slovenska. Veľkú časť religióznych a vzdelávacích aktivít však realizuje v Bratislave. Pred jeho príchodom do Bratislavy pravidelne dochádzal liberálny rabín Andrew Goldstein z Londýna. 13 Pôvodne som uvažoval zaradiť sem aj sviatok Purim, ktorý sa im historicky aj obsahovo v mnohom podobá. Z rôznych dôvodov som napokon od tejto myšlienky upustil.

Sú súčasťou fikčného sveta básne. Boli vytvorené očistením od vlastností nepodstatných pre fikčný svet a od vžitých spôsobov existencie ich reálnych náprotivkov. Autor vytvára zdanie, že postavy sa buď vyjadrujú sami o sebe, alebo že vyjadrujú sami seba. Posudzovanie Dám ako žien jemných spôsobov a postavy so začaděnou tvárí ako osoby neokrôchaného vystupovania je objektivizovateľné: vychádza z usudzovania default reasoning (ak x patrí do kategórie K, a ak niet iných informácií, dá sa usudzovať, že x má vlastnosť V), zviazaného so slovenským, príp. stredoeurópskym kultúrnym kontextom. 9 Uplatnenie axiologickej funkcie "taký, aký má byť" autor prepája s realizovaním preferenčného vzťahu voči ním posudzovanej entite. Reakciou subjektu na aplikovanú axiologickú funkciu je, že dáva alebo nedáva prednosť hodnotenej entite pred ponúkajúcimi sa inými evaluatívne homogénnymi entitami. Autorov axiologický koncept sa vzápätí prenáša z predtextovej fázy tvorby básne do vlastného konštituovania fikčného sveta textu. Prejaví sa to použitím konštrukčných a výrazových prostriedkov, ktoré jej tvorcovi umožnia navrstviť na príležitostný charakter textu iné, najmä 5

A tanulmany az 1304 es 1511 kozott irodott, harmincnal tobb sokpecsetes oklevel mintegy 910-et kitevő pecsetanyaganak statisztikai jellemzőit es valtozasait mutatja be az abrazolasi tipus, a cimertan, az epigrafia szempontjabol. A vizsgalt oklevelek tobbsege a becsi, tobb oklevel a varsoi es a budapesti allami leveltarakban, egy pedig Dubrovnikban talalhato.

V tejto kapitole sa zaoberám vzťahom židovskej identity a totalitných režimov. Všímam si niektoré teoretické aspekty identity všeobecne, zameriavam sa však najmä na vonkajšie sociálno-politické faktory, ktoré (de)formovali a determinovali tento fenomén na Slovensku v podmienkach totalitných systémov v 20. storočí. Štúdia je postavená na analýze archívnych dokumentov z rokov 1945–1989 a dobovej tlače.

Utcanévváltozások Pozsony példáján 1. A pozsonyi utcanévváltozások vizsgálatának időszerűsége, előzményei. Nem szorul bizonyításra, hogy a településekhez kapcsolódó, azok belső területéhez köthető földrajzi nevek időbeli változ(tat)ásai hű lenyomatai az adott város vagy falu történelmi sorsfordulóinak. A helyi közterületek átnevezésének indítékai egyaránt lehetnek politikaiideológiai, etnikai, nyelvi és helytörténeti indíttatásúak. Közülük a politikai-ideológiai okokra visszavezethető névváltoztatások általában hűen követik a mindenkori politikagyakran viszonylag rövid időn belül lezajló és egymással homlokegyenest ellentétes irányúkurzusváltásait, megvalósítva ezzel a virtuális térfoglalást. Győri püspökök a XIII. században A főpapok szerepe a középkorban igen jelentős és összetett volt, ugyanis főpásztori teendőik mellett politikai funkciót is betöltöttek. A királyi hatalom részben a főpapság erején alapult. A főpapság katonai potenciálja is figyelemre méltó volt. A főpapok tagjai voltak a királyi tanácsnak, az uralkodó környezetének és az országgyűléseken is tevékenyen részt vettek. Művelt személyek voltak, képzettségük a világi főurak felett állt. Többnyire jogi képzettségük volt, így az állami feladatok között nagyon jól kiismerhették magukat, és nagy segítségére lehettek az uralkodónak azok ellátásában. Az árpád-korban tevékenykedő főpapok életpályája a különböző források segítségével mára már többnyire feldolgozásra került. A legtöbb egyházmegye monográfiája elkészült, azonban a győri egyházmegye esetében ez még várat magára. Dolgozatom a XIII. században kormányzó győri püspökök életútját tárgyalja. Időbeli kerete az 1188-tól 1308-ig eltelt százhúsz esztendő. A győri püspöki széket betöltő főpapok életpályáját szeretném felvázolni. Azonban ezek az élet-és karrierutak a források szűkössége miatt csak hiányosan rekonstruálhatók. Származásuk, családjuk Az általános vélekedés szerint a főpapi székekbe Magyarországon, mint külföldön is, szinte kizárólag nemesi családok leszármazottai kerülhettek. Valószínűleg nemcsak az egri püspökség betöltésénél volt elvárás a nemesi származás. A király és maguk a főpapok is igyekeztek megakadályozni, hogy szolgaszármazású pap emelkedhessék főpapi méltóságba. 1 Az egyházi méltóságok valósággal függvényei lesznek a befolyásos, király körül tevékenykedő főúri családok hatalmi törekvéseinek. 2 Az előbb említett vélekedések szerint a nagy javadalmakkal rendelkező főpapság többnyire az előkelő birtokos családok sarjait fogadta soraiba. A gazdag magyar nemzetségek tagjai közül kerülnek ki a XIII. században a győri főpapok is? Erre a kérdésre keresve a választ a püspökök társadalmi és területi származását fogjuk megvizsgálni. Csák Ugrin az egyik legtekintélyesebb magyarországi nemzetség, a Csák nem leszármazottja volt. A nemzetség ősi öröklött birtokai nagyrészt a Dunántúlon, Fejér megyében 3 terültek el. Központjuk Csákvár volt. A nemzetség a XII. században már több ágazatra bomlott. Ezen ágazatokat birtok helyei után, vagy ágtörzseik nevei után jelölték. A XIII-XIV. században már tizenkét ágra szakadva 4 huszonöt megyében birtokoltak területeket. A legelső a Sopron megyei ágazat, melyet Ugrin győri püspök alapított meg. Igaz, hogy az ágnak öröklött birtokai ekkor is nagy kiterjedésűek, de talán még ennél is több birtokot szerzett Ugrin. Ugrinnak feltehetően nagy értékű ingatlan vagyona is volt. A nemzetség eredetéről különféle elképzelések vannak, lehetett idegen, magyar vagy már a magyar honfoglalás előtt itt élt nemzetség, akik behódoltak a honfoglalóknak és ezért birtokaikat megtarthatták. 11 Első ismert tagja a XII. század végén élt Osl ispán, aki Sopron megyei birtokos volt. Besenyő környezetben élt, így van olyan elképzelés, hogy a besenyők legelőkelőbb nemzetségéből származhatott. 12 A nemzetség törzsbirtokai Sopron megyében voltak. Sopron vármegye tősgyökeres és legkiválóbb nemzetsége volt az Osl nemzetség. 13 Karácsonyi szerint Osli ispán volt a csornai prépostság alapítója. 14 Omodé a XIII. század elején felemelkedő Pok nemzetség tagja volt. Ősi központjuk a Győr megyei Pok falu, itt állt a Szent István vértanú tiszteletére emelt poki, premontrei monostoruk.15 Győr megyén kívül számos más megyében is szereztek birtokokat. A Pok nem már a XIII. században három fő ágra bomlik. A nemzetség előkelőbb ága 1251-ben önálló monostort alapított Mórichidán. 16 Amadé püspök a nemzetség töredék ágából származott. 17 Artolf vagy Aistulf 18 előkelő nemesi családból származott. A Dunántúlon született, családi birtokai is a Dunántúlon feküdtek. Wolfgang vagy Farkas 19 a Vas megyei Beicz nemzetségből származik. Beicz nevű község Rumtól keletre fekszik. 20 András származásáról csak annyit tudhatunk, hogy népes családban született. Tengerdi Tivadar családja a Fejér megyei Tengerd falu birtokosa. Fejér megye a Dunántúlon és a Duna-Tisza közén terült el. Megállapíthatjuk, hogy a XIII. századi győri püspökök közül Csák Ugrin, Lendvai Benedek, Artolf, Omodé a legelőkelőbb magyarországi nemzetségekből származtak. Péter, Kozma, Gergely, Farkas, Dénes, András, Tivadar családjainak birtokairól, anyagi helyzetéről keveset tudunk, valószínűleg nem tartozhattak a leggazdagabb családok közé. Talán középbirtokos családból került a püspöki székbe a Beicz nemzetségből származó Farkas. 21 Láthatjuk, hogy nem csak előkelő családok utódai kerültek a győri püspöki székbe. Az egyházi pálya mindig is társadalmi mobilitást biztosított az alacsonyabb származásúaknak. Tehetségük révén kiemelkedve, pártfogójuk költségén végezték el egyetemi tanulmányaikat. A kancelláriába bekerülve püspöki méltóságot is elnyerhettek. A XIII. századi győri főpapok többségében nem a legelőkelőbb családok sarjai közül kerültek ki. Döntően magyar 22 származásúak voltak a győri püspökök. Csák Ugrin, Péter, Kozma, Lendvai Benedek püspökök magyar származásúak. Omodé vitatott eredetű nemzetség sarja volt. Megfigyelhető, hogy a győri püspökök családjainak birtokai a győri egyházmegye közelében, de legalábbis a Dunántúlon feküdtek. A főpapok kinevezésében ez mégsem volt meghatározó, ugyanis általában nem annak az egyházmegyének az élére kerültek ahol családi birtokaik feküdtek.

With regard to the “long” nineteenth-century history of the Habsburg monarchy, the new generation of post-1989 historians have strengthened research into social history, the history of previously unstudied social classes, the church, nobility, bourgeoisie, and environmental history, as well as the politics of memory.The Czechoslovak centenary increased historians’ interest in the year 1918 and the constitutional changes in the Central European region. It involved the culmination of previous revisitations of the World War I years, which also benefited from gaining a 100-year perspective. The Habsburg monarchy, whose agony and downfall accompanied the entire period of war (1914–1918), was not left behind because the year 1918 marked a significant milestone in Slovak history. Pribina was a Slavic leader of unknown origin from the 9th century who was expelled by the Moravian prince (dux) Mojmir I. However, his rank in the territory north of the Danube before exile is a matter of an age-long scholarly debate. This article presents an analysis of historiographic discourse which has resulted in the national scholarly construction of an early medieval, hypothetical Slovak/Nitrian rulership of Pribina. The aim is to illustrate the gradual progression of scholarly concepts regarding this rather shadowy Slavic leader and his supposed ethnically distinct north-Danubian domain, which is typically presented in historiography as “The Nitrian Principality.” In this study, the genesis of historiographic narrative about the putative “first ruler” of modern Slovaks’ ethnic ancestors, adopted mainly by Slovak historians, archaeologists and intellectuals in general is traced. A discourse analysis of intellectual writings about Pribina and Nitra is used to demonstrate how the particular narrative of “national ruler” unambiguously correlated with modern socio-political transformations during the political creation of Slovakia after the First World War. The article suggests that the notion of Pribina as original independent ruler emerged in the late 19th century and was cemented in the scholarship only after 1918 due to the formation of Czechoslovakia and subsequent need for an official version of distinct Slovak history.

Štúdia pojednává o českých stredovekých kronikách a ich vzťahu k postave kráľa Svätopluka, ktorý sa odvíjal nie len od poznania, aké  daný kronikár mal, ale aj od politickej objednávky, ktorú pred písaním kroniky dostal. Postava Svätopluka vo všetkých českých kronikách má legendickú podobu a v tej, ktorej dobe, plní funkciu buď negatívnej osoby ničiteľa, ktorého zásluhou zanikla veľká ríša, alebo vystupuje ako hrdina či svätec zásluhou ktorého si Čechy zachovali kresťanstvo a samostatnú "štátnosť".
The study deals with the Czech medieval chronicles and their relation to the figure of King Svatopluk, which depended not only on the knowledge the chronicler had, but also on the political order he received before writing the chronicle. The figure of Svatopluk in all the Czech chronicles has a legendary form and in whichever period he performs the function of either a negative person of a destroyer, thanks to whose merit the great empire perished, or he acts as a hero or a saint, thanks to whose merit Bohemia preserved Christianity and an independent "statehood".

TOKÁROVÁ, Zuzana. Social Status of the Interwar Jewish Political Elite in Prešov and Its Influence on Surviving the Holocaust. Historický časopis, 2021, 69, 4, pp. 655–676, Bratislava.

The paper analyses the social status of the Jewish members of the interwar municipal political elite during the Holocaust in the example of the town of Prešov. They lost their democratically elected mandate due to the dissolution of Jewish parties and opposition parties in Slovakia after Hlinka’s Slovak People’s Party came to power in October 1938. The main attention is focused on the (declining) vertical social mobility of members of the former elite in order to find out whether their previous political engagement and possible social ties associated with it influenced their social status at the time of the systematic implementation of anti-Jewish policy or helped them to survive during the Holocaust. The paper intends to capture a common model of behaviour, as well as individual actions and apply the acquired knowledge to the whole group of Jewish municipal political elites in the period under review.

To twierdzenie dość często pojawia się w recenzjach różnych książek historycznych, prac dyplomowych, a niekiedy możemy je odnaleźć także w naukowych polemikach. Jaki jest jednak stan faktyczny? I co sprawiło, że tak właśnie wygląda?

When it comes to the issue of examining the history of theatre in eastern Slovakia, it is clear that literature reflecting the status of theatrical activities in this area is insufficient despite some valuable works having been put forward. The absence of continuous and synthetic research of theatrical life in eastern Slovakia is surprising, as cities such as Košice and Prešov have always concentrated the intellectual potential of the area and have been kept at the ‘crossroads’ of linguistic, religious and cultural paths. This diversity has become a natural prerequisite for the development of theatre life in the area. One of the first publications on the birth of theatre in eastern Slovakia was Milena Cesnaková-Michalcová’s Theatre Beginnings in Slovakia (Z divadelnych počiatkov na Slovensku, 1977). Interview with Historian Rastislav Kožiak PhDr. Rastislav Koziak, PhD. (* 1969) undoubtedly belongs among the important personalities of contemporary Slovak historiography. From the beginning of his career he has been associated with the Department of History of the Faculty of Arts and Letters of the Matej Bel University in Banská Bystrica, a department which he has also been the head of for a long time (since 2004). In his research he focuses on the history of Christianity, especially in the early Middle Ages, and on the history of historiography. As an author and editor, he collaborated, for example, on the publications Orders and Monasteries in the Middle Ages, Paganism and Christianity, The Saint and His Function in Society, Saint Adalbert-Saint, Era and Cult, Chapters from the Contemporary Philosophy of History. He is also one of the tireless organizers of the life of the historical community in Slovakia and he actively participates in the development of historical science in surrounding countries. He completed his university studies at the Faculty of Arts and Letters of Comenius University in Bratislava (History and Slovak Language double major), where he also completed his doctoral studies. After their completion, he returned to his native Banská Bystrica, where he has worked ever since at the University of Matej Bel. In the academic environment he was also involved in the self-governing bodies of the faculty, as a two-time chairman of the faculty academic senate, which testifies to the trust he enjoys in the workplace. Students know him from his courses devoted to the history of medieval Europe, medieval Christianity, history and methodology of historiography. In the years 1999-2002 he lectured externally at our Department of History, first at the University of Žilina and later at the Catholic University in Ružomberok. Origins of the Slavic Historicism of Ján Kollár
In this study we focus on the tracking of the origins of Ján Kollár's interest in the Slavic past – or history in general, as well as of the creation of his specific historicism. We identified the main topics of his interest as well as the use of various methods of historiographic analysis and synthesis (such as etymologization). We also analyzed the beginnings of Kollár's Slavism. The text thus presents a basis for grasping the concept of Ján Kollár's later work in this field.

Ancient History of the Slavs in Slávy dcera by Ján Kollár

The paper focuses on history and historicism in the poetry book by Ján Kollár Slávy dcera. It casts light on the historiography of the first half of the nineteenth century and its connection to nationalism, Romanticism and the formation of a modern nation. Slovenská historiografia prvej polovice 19. storočia síce zreteľne nadväzovala na výsledky predchádzajúcich období, ale s ohľadom na prepojenie s moderným nacionalizmom a tvorbou kultúrnych vzorov a kodifikácií sa stala základom pre nastavenie línií historického výkladu v 20. storočí. Napriek tomu sa tomuto segmentu (čo len prehľadovo) doposiaľ venovalo iba málo bádateľov 1. Špecifický bol aj jej všeobjímajúci slovanský rámec.

Sts. Cyril and Methodius in the Historiography of the 1st Half of the 19th Century

This study focuses on history and historicism in the works of Ján Kollár and Pavol Jozef Šafárik on a specific theme: the life, activity and symbolism of Sts. Cyril and Methodius and their share in the christianization of the western Slavic nations. It gives an insight in the most important works of both authors for historiography and tries to cast light on the historiography of the first half of the 19th century and its connection to nationalism, Romanticism and forming of a modern nation.
The analysis uncovered that the main tendency of the presented information about the saints was approximately identical and positive. Both scholars believed in close interconnection between the events of the 9th century and the territory of Slovakia or straightly with Slovaks by Old Church Slavonic language and reminiscences to Slavic or Eastern Catholic (Greek) liturgy. Both used similar heuristic base and showed sizeable knowledge of various sources and secondary literature. The distinction is visible mostly in quantity and quality of the texts because references in Kollár's works are only fragmentary (the exception is a special sermon about the saints). Šafárik offered rich and more complex interpretation several times. Kollár did not observe the problems of the Old Church Slavonic and Slavic alphabets. He was a skilled user of the professional historiographical theses, still, a really scholar level of the interpretation was constitued by P. J. Šafárik. Despite this statement, Kollár's romantic and national interpretation presented a valid part of the period style as well.

Aspects of Slovak Historiography from the Time of Ján Kollár and Pavol Jozef Šafárik

Study is devoted to Slovak historiography of the first half of 19th century. Dealing with the historiographical works of Ján Kollár and Pavol Jozef Šafárik, is closely connected to the questions of nationalism and Slavic romanticism. Both Kollár and Šafárik were from the same generation. Their national sentiment was formed by the same influences: affiliation with the protestant religion, the Latin characteristics of education, studies at the University of Jena and a long-term residence abroad. Their early writings were influenced by historicism, however, their approaches to scientific analyses differed. Kollar's works do contain enormous dose of historical factography, but none of them is historiographic. Kollár included the elements of historicism in his sermons, poetry and pedagogical letters; he focused at the earliest history of the Slavs. Šafárik became the most prominent historian of the Slavic history in the 19th century and many of his theses remain valid even in these days. Šafárik was trying to shed some light on the European origin of the Slavs and summarize their history before the 6th Century AD. Both authors were active proponents of the idea of a unified Slavic nation, comprising Slovak, Czech, Russian, Polish, Serbian, Croatian, etc. tribes. The past - in which they were looking for proofs of Slavic unity - became a useful showcase for the future. They believed that the Slavs would unite, thus being able aspire at main positions in the world history and politics. This idea of national unification originates from philosopher Johan Gottfried Herder. Special attention paid to historical examples of Slavic unity, such as rule of Samo the merchant or Great Moravia under Svätopluk, is rooted in this conviction. Kollár and Šafárik fabricated the national myths about the Slavs. They reproduced the collection of idealized qualities (such as devotion to religion, fatal hilarity, devotion to the mother tongue, diligence, appreciation of peace, etc.) and hard work (peasantry and business). They were attempting to present their ideology in the public and amplify sentiment of national fellowship and solidarity. Scholarly works of Kollár and Šafárik were based on historical research, but they also believed that old myths and songs contain important hard data as well. Most of all they favored the use of etymological – in fact linguistic – method. However its results were doubted from a current point of view.

Great Moravia and Great Moravian Tradition of Generation of Kollár and Šafárik

This study focuses on factography and symbolism of Great Moravia in the works of Ján Hollý, Ján Kollár and Pavol Jozef Šafárik. It gives an insight in their the most important works for historism and historiography and tries to cast light on its connection to nationalism, Romanticism and forming of a modern nation. The analysis uncovered that main tendency of presented information about the Slavic empire was positive. All scholars believed to close interconnection between events of the 9th century and territory of Slovakia or straightly with Slovaks. The image of Great Moravia varied from historic Slovak kingdom to last Panslavic empire. They used similar heuristic base and showed sizeable knowledge of various sources and secondary literature. The distinction is visibly mostly in quantity and quality of the texts because references in Kollár’s works are only fragmentary; Hollý only wrote a few works and commentaries; Šafárik offered several times richer and more complex interpretation.

Sláwa Bohyně a původ gména Slawůw čili Slawjanůw... by Ján Kollár

This study focuses on history and historism in the work of Ján Kollár Sláwa Bohyně a původ gména Slawuw čili Slawjanuw… [The Goddess Fame/Glory (Sláwa) and Origin of the name Slaw or Slawjan...] (1839). Historism appeared even in Kollár's early writings and he had a specific approach to its scholarly analysis. The works of Jan Kollár contain a huge amount of historic facts however none of them are really historiographic. His academic methods were based on pieces of information in original sources but he also believed that old myths and songs contain important data as well. The etymological (or rather a linguistic) method was considered to be a popular and widespread method of the period. However its results are doubted from a current point of view. In presented work, Kollár described a fictitious goddess “Sláva” (Glory/Fame), the alleged Slavic national divinity, her attributes as well as believed religious or mythological songs of Slavic folk. From her name he also originated the Slav's name (Sláva – Slavs). In the appendix, he depicted an extensive analogy between the Slavs and Indians, based mostly on comparison of their mythology.

The Legacy of Ján Kollár to the Slovak Historiography

Ján Kollár belonged to the specific generation of Panslavia, and his national sentiment was formed by such influences as the Slovak nationality, affiliation to the evangelic religion, the latin characteristics of education in theKingdom of Hungary, study at the university in Jena and a long stay outside Slovakia. Historism and historiography themes appeared already in his early writings. The works of Ján Kollár contain a huge amount of historical facts however none of them are in fact historiographic. Kollár included the elements of historism in his sermons, poetry and pedagogical letters. He was interested mainly in the earliest history of Slavs. As a scholar he started analyzing this issue between 1826 – 1830 when he completed his first works on the origin of national names: Ableitung und Erklärung den National – Namens Magyar (1827) and Rozprawy o Gmenách, počátkách i starožitnostech národu Slawského a geho kmenů (1830). Because of the big number of historical facts in his poetry book Slávy dcera (1824 – 1852), he was obliged to publish Výklad čili přímětky a vysvětlivky ku Slávy dceře (1832) – explanatory notes and the edition of historical sources. Even his cultural-political letters O literárnej vzájomnosti medzi rozličnými kmeňmi a nárečiami slovanského národa (1836, 1844) contain some historical data. In his next scholarly work Sláwa Bohyně a původ gména Slawuw čili Slawjanuw w listech k welectenému příteli panu P. J. Šafarjkovi od Jana Kollára s přjdawky srownalost indického a slawského žiwota, řeči a bájeslowj ukazugjcjmi (1839) Kollár depicts the analogy between the Slavs and Indians, based mostly on mythology. The national name of the Slavs is originated from a fictitious goddess. In his last years he dedicated himself to archaeology and became the profesor of archaeology at the university in Vienna in 1849. At this period he focused on the question of slavic settlements in Italy which he concluded with the publishing of Staroitalia slavjanská aneb objevy a důkazy živlů slavských v zeměpisu, v dějinách a v bájesloví, zvláště v řeči a literatuře nejdávnejších vlaských a sousedních kmenů, ze kterých je zřejmo, že mezi prvotními osadníky a obyvateli této krajiny i Slavjané nad jiné četnější byli (1853). At the same time he also dealt with the so called idols of Prilwitz – this work „Die Götter Rhetras“ čiže Bohové z Retry čili Bájeslovné starožitnosti Slovanů a zčásti i Germánů v severní Evropě has never been published, not even posthumously. Kollár has never been considered a scholar despite his best efforts and widespread knowledge from the field of history.

The Political Aspects of the Activity of Ján Kollár

This fundamental study focuses on the political aspects of the activity of Ján Kollár (1793 – 1852). It summarizes definitions of the notion „politics“ and its relationship towards Kollár’s scheme of the Slavic literary or language unification. In the next step of his vision unification of the all Slavic branches (tribes) into one single nation should follow. This ought to be manifested in the formation of the immense state of the all Slavic people on the territory spanning from Alaska to Germany and from Novaya Zemlya to the Balkan Peninsula. Kollár counted on the national Slavic government and on the participation of the originally Slavic aristocracy in it, the state form was supposed to be some kind of monarchy. Special Slavic feudalism opposite to its German pendant should be founded on the principles of the ancient Slavic democracy and new model of humanity. Such programme could not be and was not freely presented. Its reception was necessary to search for in the big number of the fragments in various Kollár’s works – scholarly writings, sermons or poetry, but also in the correspondence of him and his contemporaries. Beside virtual representation of the Kollár’s conception, the study sums up briefly Kollár’s participation on the real political performance in the service of government.

A tanulmány a II. Piusz pápa (1458-1464) által a mantuai kongresszuson (1459) kibocsátott, a szepesi prépostokat bizonyos mértékben püspöki joghatósággal felruházó pápai bullát vizsgálja. Arra keres választ, mi volt a pápai oklevélben felsorolt jogok eredete, illetve, milyen szerepet játszott Stock János szepesi prépost (1433-1464) e jogok megerősítésében. A szepesi prépostok a 13. század elejétől nemcsak a szepesi társaskáptalan elöljárói voltak, de joghatóságot gyakoroltak az esztergomi egyházmegye északkeleti csücskében elhelyezkedő Szepesség egyházai felett. Az egyházmegyei központtól való távolság miatt a prépostok különböző különleges jogosítványokra tettek szert az idők folyamán. Ezek azonban nem voltak egyértelműen meghatározva, míg Stock János 1459-ben összegyűjtve és felsorolva őket nem folyamodott megerősítésükért. Stock János 1433-ban mint Zsigmond magyar király (1387-1437) és német-római császár (1433-1437) személyes orvosa került a szepesi káptalan élére. Zsigmond halála után áttette székhelyét Lőcsére, ahol erős kézzel fogott neki a huszita betörések és a belháborúk sújtotta Szepesség szétzilált egyházi életének megszervezéséhez. A szigorú egyházi elöljáró számos esetben került konfliktusba káptalanja tagjaival és a joghatósága alá tartozó plébánosokkal. Ez lehetett egyik oka, hogy tudatosan törekedett a szepesi prépostok különleges jogosítványait igazoló oklevelek összegyűjtésére. Ezek felhasználásával érte el, hogy II. Piusz pápa megerősítette a szepesi prépostok jogát püspöknek fenntartott ügyekben abszolúciót adni, valamint bíráskodni, kivizsgálni megerősíteni és megsemmisíteni, egyházi büntetéseket alkalmazni, zsinatot összehívni és ún. „subsidum charitativumot” kérni.

The object of the present study is the papal bull issued by Pope Pius II (1458–1464) during the Congress of Mantua (1459), which granted to the provosts of Szepes/Spiš episcopal power to some extent. The study seeks answers to the following questions: what were the origins of these rights, and what was the role of Provost Johannes Stock in achieving papal approbation and confirmation. Since the beginning of the 13rd century, provosts of Szepes were not only superiors of the collegiate chapter but also exercised ecclesiastical jurisdiction over the churches of the Szepes district in the north-eastern part of the Diocese of Esztergom. As the district was located far from the centre of the diocese, the provost gained some extraordinary spheres of authority. The clear dimensions of the provost’s jurisdictional power were not defined until Johannes Stock supplicated for confirmation in 1459. Johannes Stock was promoted to provost of Szepes in 1433 as a personal physician of Sigismund of Luxemburg, king of Hungary (1387–1437) and Holy Roman Emperor (1433–1437). After the death of Sigismund, he moved to Lőcse (Levoča) and from there, he exercised his jurisdiction over the territory affected by Hussite raids and internal turmoils. As a rigorous ecclesiastical superior, he frequently came into conflict with the members of his collegiate chapter and priests under his jurisdiction. He might be intended to collect the pieces of evidence of the extraordinary rights of the provosts of Szepes. By exhibition of these, he achieved that Pope Pius II confirmed the rights of the provosts of Szepes to give absolution even in reserved cases. Besides this, they were able to judge, investigate, confirm and annul, use ecclesiastical penalties, convoke synods, ask for s.c. subsidium charitativum etc.
