Polish historiography

Against the background of earlier historiography, the article provides an overview of the contributions to the history of the Society of Jesus in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth published between 2017 and 2024. The author particularly highlights new trends, i.e. the introduction of new sources into the scholarly discourse and the shift from historiography authored by Jesuits to a non-Jesuit one.

W 2018 roku minęło 35 lat funkcjonowania European Association for Population Studies (EAPS). Powstanie tej organizacji datowane jest formalnie na 31 marca 1983 roku 1 , kiedy dokument powołania EAPS z siedzibą w Hadze podpisali prof. Guillaume Wunsch i prof. Dirk J. van de Kaa. Powołanie EAPS poprzedzone było wysiłkami wielu znanych demografów z obu stron żelaznej kurtyny dzielącej wówczas Europę, którzy pragnęli, by europejskie środowisko demograficzne było reprezentowane przez silną organizację integrującą naukowców w działaniach na rzecz rozwoju demografii i badań ludnościowych, upowszechnianiu ich wyników, wspólnego określania kluczowych kwestii dotyczących perspektyw demograficznych kontynentu oraz kierunków polityki dotyczącej ludności. Poprzednikiem EAPS było European Centre for Population Studies (ECPS) założone w Paryżu w 1953 roku. W 1968 roku organizacja ta została przeniesiona do Hagi. Stopniowo wśród jej kierownictwa rosło przeświadczenie, że ECPS wymaga wsparcia instytucjonalnego i logistycznego. Oczekiwano, że powstały w 1970 roku Netherlands Interdisciplinary Demographic Institute (NIDI) udzieli takiej pomocy. What Czech and Polish Historians Can Say to Each Other: Reflections on Historical Relations and Interconnectedness

This essay explores promising and potentially innovative themes in Czech and Polish historiography, focusing on their mutual entanglement and broader transregional dynamics. It emphasizes key aspects such as entangled histories, thematic asymmetries and their underlying causes, and processes of transfer and reception.

Building upon earlier reflections and informed by current trends in historiography, related disciplines, and broader societal developments, the text outlines several open-ended and perspectivally promising areas for future Czech-Polish historical research. By "perspectivally promising," the essay refers to thematic fields where the convergence of Czech and Polish historical perspectives—whether methodological or thematic—can yield not only novel insights but also new forms of understanding, interpretation, and conceptualization of historical phenomena. These insights are relevant not only for Czech and Polish history individually or jointly, but also within a regional, European, or transregional context.

This includes both so-called "first-degree" history (traditional political, social, or economic history) and "second-degree" history (histoire au second degré), which pertains more to the realms of historical culture, memory, and the politics of history. The essay underlines the pressing need to transcend the still predominant paradigm of a bilateral, nation-centered historiography, advocating instead for a more integrative, multi-perspective approach.

Ця рецензія не стільки аналітичного, скільки інформаційного характеру. Не маю публікацій, безпосередньо пов’язаних із темою, якій присвячена книга Ґжеґожа Мотики, але розумію, наскільки важливо донести до української аудиторії висновки, яких він дійшов у результаті багаторічних досліджень однієї з найбільш болючих тем в історії польсько-українських взаємин 1940-х рр.

Видання містить праці українського сходознавця-тюрколога Євгена Завалинського (1911-1993), листування и матеріали, що стосуються иого біографії та творчості. Вчений є вихованцем польської орієнталістичної школи 1930-х рр., представником українського сходознавчого середовища Львова початку 1940-х рр. і яскравим взірцем інтелектуала з великим творчим потенціалом, який прагнув реалізувати себе у складних обставинах середини ХХ ст., проте був змушений відійти від науки. Його студії, серед яких дві надруковано вперше, присвячені українсько-турецьким і польсько-турецьким відносинам у домодерний період, образу України и Польщі в османських хроніках XV-XVIII ст., турецьким джерелам до історії України. Опубліковано листи науковця до Владислава Котвича, Стефана Стасяка, Тадеуша Ковальського, Агатангела Кримського, Володимира Яніва, взаємне листування з Омеляном Пріцаком. Біографічні документи Є. Завалинського охоплюють 1929-1981 рр. і висвітлюють, з-поміж іншого, иого контакти з НТШ та австралійськими університетами. Ці матеріали взято з архівних збірок Львова, Києва, Варшави, Кракова, а також приватного архіву вченого, що зберігається в Мельбурні (Австралія). Для істориків, сходознавців, усіх, хто цікавиться історією сходознавчої науки.

Artykuł rekonstruuje koncepcję prospektywizmu historiografii w ujęciu Jana Pomorskiego, podkreślając jej znaczenie dla współczesnych badań historycznych. Autorka przedstawia ideę historiografii jako dyscypliny zorientowanej na przyszłość. Prospektywizm historiografii zakłada, że świadomość historyczna nie jest jedynie rekonstrukcją przeszłości, lecz także narzędziem kształtowania przyszłości poprzez analizę mechanizmów historycznych i przewidywanie potencjalnych scenariuszy. Pomorski zwraca uwagę na rolę historyka jako aktywnego uczestnika procesów społecznych, którego zadaniem jest nie tylko badanie faktów, lecz także wpływanie na kształtowanie świadomości historycznej i podejmowanie działań o charakterze prewidystycznym. Artykuł ukazuje również powiązania prospektywizmu z ideą aktywizmu historycznego oraz jego znaczenie dla współczesnej metodologii badań historycznych, wskazując na konieczność uwzględnienia przyszłości jako istotnego elementu refleksji nad dziejami.

In this dissertation, on the basis of a specific case of a 19th-century Lvovian historian – Karol Szajnocha (a great classic of Polish historiography) – the authors propose a particular model of a biographical study for the purpose of the history of historiography. In their opinion, it could constitute an alternative for the models which heretofore existed in this area. The latter are in their view excessively marked by an internal tension between the necessity to develop a strictly biographical theme and an imperative to study the historical concepts formulated by the protagonists of such dissertations in a systematic way. Frequently this results in an insufficient linking and imbalance of both of the layers of analysis, and in a lack of harmony between them. The limits of facade criticism. Remarks on „academic adventurism”

In the critical article, I show how two historians from Poznań, Dariusz Sikorski and Edward Skibiński, have been reviewing the book by history methodologists in a way that is not acceptable. The reviews don’t meet the standards for academic debate. They should be about improving the quality of knowledge in the history and humanities. The Poznań researchers’
reviews are not an academic debate. Their texts are a manifestation of academic unruliness.

The article contains viewpoints presented during a panel discussion promoting the academic textbook Wprowadzenie do metodologii historii [Introduction to the Methodology of History] (eds. Ewa Domańska and Jan Pomorski, PWN 2022), which took place on December 8, 2022, in Poznań during the national conference "Methodology of History: Current Opportunities and Challenges." The panel featured the book's editors, invited textbook authors, and experts covering topics such as various understandings of the empirical methodology of history, the pluralism of historical knowledge, and the methodology of history as a separate discipline and its role in academic teaching within historical studies. The discussion also addressed the challenges of creating a modern academic textbook reflecting new approaches and fields within the discipline of history while meeting the demands of both students and the Polish Qualifications Framework.

RESUMEN: Este trabajo analiza la propaganda de guerra durante la Guerra Civil española y los primeros años del «nuevo Estado» franquista. La bibliografía reciente ha analizado la construcción estereotipada de la imagen del enemigo, y cómo la persona del general Francisco Franco fue transfigurada simbólicamente mediante la construcción y la propagación de su imagen carismática en el discurso, los ritos y las liturgias del «nuevo Estado» durante la Guerra Civil. Mediante estos discursos e imágenes, la propaganda construyó una cultura de guerra en España de 1936 a 1939.

Tak, tytułowa historyczka dziejów społeczno-gospodarczych epoki nowożytnej oraz historii polskiego ruchu robotniczego, edytorka źródeł, pierwsza w Polsce kobieta z tytułem profesora zwyczajnego w zakresie historii (1946) -Natalia Gąsiorowska-Grabowska -przyszła na świat 20 V 1881 r. w Orzycu koło Makowa Mazowieckiego. Była jedną z najwybitniejszych powojennych polskich uczonych w zakresie historii społeczno-gospodarczej, jedną z prekursorek tego kierunku w Polsce. Historyk Ireneusz Ihnatowicz, jej uczeń 1 , tak rozpoczął opis jej życia: "Działalność naukowa i polityczna Natalii Gąsiorowskiej w osobliwy sposób wiąże się z jej losami osobistymi (…). Urodziła się, gdy przygasały już hasła pozytywizmu i gdy pojawiać się zaczynały pierwsze zapowiedzi nawrotu do idei romantycznych, a program wyzwolenia narodu poprzez walkę znowu zaczynał zyskiwać zwolenników. Kształtowała się klasa robotnicza i rozwijać się zaczynał ruch robotniczy (…). Rosły wielkie fortuny burżuazji, dostarczając wyrazistych przykładów działania mechanizmu gospodarki kapitalistycznej. Na skutek popowstaniowego i pouwłaszczeniowego upadku wielkiej własności rolnej znaczna liczba dawnych posiadaczy znalazła się w kłopotach materialnych, często nawet bez środków do życia. Odbywała się wielka przemiana struktury społecznej, zmiana hierarchii wartości, prestiżu, ideologii. Była to więc epoka wymagająca od każdego szczególnie częstego podejmowania decyzji i działań, które określać miały jego sposób życia, postawę i miejsce w społeczeństwie. This paper revise the last bibliographic contributions linked with the figure of Joseph Stalin, with the objective of analize the importance that different historians give, from the access to new sources as a consecuence of the openness of the former URSS archives, to the personal factor in the conformation of the regime.El trabajo revisa las últimas aportaciones bibliográficas vinculadas con la figura de José Stalin, con el objetivo de analizar la importancia que los diferentes historiadores otorgan, a partir del acceso a nuevas fuentes como consecuencia de la apertura de los archivos de la ex Unión Soviética, al factor personal en la conformación del régimen

В истории славянских народов судьба полабских племён занимает особое положение. Прежде других столкнувшиеся с германской экспансией и не успевшие создать собственного устойчивого государства, полабские славяне уже на протяжении полутора столетий привлекают внимание исследователей. Наибольшей популярностью история полабских славян пользуется среди российских и польских специалистов, при этом следует отметить активизацию исследований по теме именно в последние несколько десятилетий. Цель настоящей работы - представить обзор и критический анализ наиболее значимых работ о полабских славянах, важных как на изучения их истории, так и для исторической славистики в целом.

Zasłużony badacz dziejów Polski północno-wschodniej, Jerzy Wiśniewski, jak wiadomo, urodził się i spędził pierwsze lata życia w Kołakach Kościelnych. Granica parafii kołakowskiej stanowiła od XV w. historyczną rubież Mazowsza -konkretnie ziemi łomżyńskiej, stykającą się z podlaskimi ziemiami bielską i drohicką. Jako sąsiad, do tego obywatel przedwojennego województwa białostockiego, Wiśniewski Podlasie znał do dziecka. Posiadał też rodzinne związki z podlaskim Augustowem, gdzie zresztą przez pewien czas mieszkał 1 . Później, w toku swej kariery naukowej, poświęcił Podlasiu znaczną część swoich publikacji. W niniejszym krótkim studium chciałbym zwrócić uwagę na wybrane aspekty jego badań, przede wszystkim -wątek związków mazowiecko--podlaskich, czy raczej mazowieckich korzeni ziem przyszłego Podlasia. Jerzy Wiśniewski w wydanej pośmiertnie pracy o osadnictwie ziemi łomżyńskiej zdefiniował utworzone ostatecznie w 1520 r. województwo podlaskie jako twór powstały z połączenia ziemi brzeskiej, terenów oderwanych od Mazowsza, południowej Jaćwieży oraz ziem bielskiej, drohickiej i mielnickiej. W dyskusji o pochodzeniu nazwy tejże krainy skłaniał się ku poglądowi, iż staroruski termin "Podlasze" oznaczał terytorium leżące "pod Lachami", czyli przy granicy "Lachów" (Polaków) 2 . 1

Jarosław Kłaczkow (ed.), Ewangelicy w regionie kujawsko-pomorskim na przestrzeni wieków [Protestants in the Cuiavian-Pomeranian Region Through the Centuries], Toruń, 2020, Wydawnictwo Naukowe Uniwersytetu Mikołaja Kopernika, 512 pp., ills, bibliog., index of personal names This joint publication is the conclusion of many years of research by the authors into the history of Protestantism in the Cuiavian-Pomeranian region-one of the most important territories for the development of Protestantism (both Lutheranism and Calvinism) in the history of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth-but it also contains a number of new insights and conclusions by the experts involved in its compilation. Signifi cantly, it was published shortly after the quincentenary of the Reformation in Poland. It is an anthology of thirteen articles, prefaced with an introduction by the editor of the volume, Jarosław Kłaczkow. The articles can be described as short, insightful summaries concerning the history of the Protestant communities in various parts of the region and in various periods, from the sixteenth century and the beginning of the Reformation in the early modern age up to the twentieth century. The book is divided into sections on a geographical basis: Cuiavia (diachronic articles by Marek Romaniuk, Tomasz Łaszkiewicz and Tomasz Krzemiński on the Protestant communities in Bydgoszcz, Inowrocław, and Eastern Cuiavia respectively, and a contribution on the history of the Protestant community in Włocławek from the end of the eighteenth century to 1939 by Tomasz Dziki); Chełmno Land (the vicissitudes of the Protestants in Grudziądz are described by Jerzy Domasłowski, and an outline of the history of the Protestants in Toruń is given by Jarosław Kłaczkow, the editor of the volume); the Dobrzyń Land (Jarosław Anuszewski and Piotr Gałowski have authored two sketches on the Lutheran parishes in Lipno and Rypin); and the Lubawa and Michałowo Lands (an article by Michał Dzimir on Brodnica and Lidzbark, and another by Andrzej Korecki on the Lubawa Land). These studies of religious literature written and published in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and the duchy/kingdom of Prussia from the mid-sixteenth century until the early eighteenth century offer much to specialists. Given the price charged for this handsome hardback volume, sales will doubtless be limited and most readers will download particular chapters via university libraries. The editors have made correspondingly little effort to tie the collection together in the introduction, which slightly exceeds a page in length, and would have been better styled a preface. 'The aim has been not only to confront different types of texts and experiences, but also to situate this heritage in social and confessional context' (p. ), but no such confrontations and contextualisations are attempted in the introduction. The editors declare their 'will to overcome the frontiers and strains of the modern world that push us towards exploring separateness instead of the realities of deep mutual dependency' (p. ), but there is a substantial gap between what is preached and what is practised. This book deals with Catholics of the Latin rite and Protestants of various hues, who wrote in Polish and/or Lithuanian. The crossing of these boundaries is welcome, but the Commonwealth was far more diverse than this, even if its Jews, Muslims and Karaites are implicitly reserved to separate studies. For a brief explanation of the socio-cultural and religious landscape, the reader must turn to Mirosława Hanusiewicz-Lavallee's chapter, which substitutes for an introduction to the volume. No other chapter deals with Eastern Christendom (whether Orthodox, Uniate or Armenian); nor is any attention paid to Courland and Livonia. Moreover, the authors are all affiliated in Vilnius, Warsaw or Lublin; there are no contributions from Ukrainian, Belarusian or Latvian literary scholars, or from further afield. The editors should have acknowledged these limitations, rather than exempting themselves 'to some extent from the obligation of modesty' (p. ). The eleven chapters cover a range of genres, of which poetry and sermons are the best represented. Underpinning them all, however, is the Bible. In most cases, this is the Bible in Polishin Protestant and Catholic translations. However, Gina Kavaliunaite's chapter provides a groundbreaking account of the genesis of the first New Testament to be published in Lithuanianin Königsberg in , dedicated to Frederick I, king in Prussia. A fuller explanation of the situation and significance of the Lithuanian-speaking population in the northern reaches of the duchy (later kingdom) of Prussia (also known as Lithuania minor) would have been welcome. The first translation of the Bible into Lithuanian, undertaken by Samuel Bogusław Chylinśki in mid seventeenthcentury England, was not printed because of disagreements among the leaders of the Lithuanian Reformed Church, while a rival translation of the New Testament was probably lost to fire. Kavaliunaitėreviews the evidence to establish the contributions of the translators and editors. The attempt to produce a text accessible to the speakers of different dialects of Lithuanian was not, however, wholly successful. In this article was presented the evolution of the perception of Union of Lublin image at polish historiography and historical publicism. Some of the points of view to the Union of Lublin, which are common in journalism and historical researches, was been taken into account. Author analyzed the main trends, which affect to transformations of the Union of Lublin perception at political culture of Poland.

Представлены несколько распространённых в публицистике и исторических работах точек зрения на Люблинскую унию, проанализированы основные тенденции, влияющие на трансформацию образа в политической культуре Польши.

The book's fi ve condensed chapters may be regarded to be a psychoanalytical introduction to historical studies on the twentieth century-and, probably, not confi ned to it. The brilliant argument is concluded with a number of surprising punch-lines. The author, whose background is 'the Warsaw School' of historians of ideas, has, in a sense, built a dictionary and, primarily, developed certain research tools, offering samples of their practical application, examples of possible concepts and conceptualisations, ways of tackling the issues at the intersection of historical anthropology and contemporary psychoanalysis. Virtually, each of these essays might potentially become a germ for a larger treatise, or even wider-ranging research project. Leder seeks to identify the causative properties or subjectivity of a sovereign (Polish) nation, its historical genealogy and phantasmatic desires. He resumes a series of questions that were evoked in Polish debates of the 1990s, and a host of problems so far unexplained with use of sociological patterns. This is certainly one of the recently published major books on meanders of Polish national awareness, the origins of the native middle class, Polish-Jewish concatenations and their infl uences on the social and historical consciousness of twenty-fi rst century Poles. not a set of conference proceedings. Instead, it is a collection of essays presenting Giecz in a variety of contexts. There are twelve articles grouped into three main sections. All the texts are in Polish (save for one, which is in English, with an abstract in Polish attached; the remainder have English abstracts). The book is dedicated to the memory of Bogdan Kostrzewski and Zofi a Hilczer-Kurnatowska. The fi rst section covers the linguistic studies and the earliest archaeological research related to Giecz. Ewa Wolnicz-Pawłowska deals in her essay with the etymology and history of the name of Giecz, mostly recapitulating the existing fi ndings. Andrzej M. Wyrwa describes the achievements of nineteenth-and early-twentieth-century scholars; his essay abounds with illustrations (many of which, however, are of poor quality and, worse even, erroneously described-as e.g. on p. 34. Whether this iconographic material is indispensable at all, is an open question.) The second section deals with how Giecz is positioned in the written sources. It opens with Zbigniew Dalewski's essay on the dynastic rulership of the Piasts; the author once again proposes his concept of perceiving the Piasts not in terms of a hierarchically structured dynasty but rather, as a kinship group, and (marginally) touches upon the position of Giecz in the state. Jacek Banaszkiewicz discusses Boleslaus the Brave's (Bolesław Chrobry's) major burg-cities as enumerated by Gallus Anonymus, identifying the sources behind this textual construction. Lastly, Tomasz Jurek writes of Giecz in the late Middle Ages and early modern period. The last, and most extensive, section covers the archaeological sources. Teresa Krzysztofi ak discusses the castle-city hub in the pre-Piast and early Piast period, based on the most recent archaeological research. Andrzej Pleszczyński reports on the attempted interpretation of the Giecz palatium, pointing out to its resemblance of the adequate structures within the German Reich territory. Teresa Rodzińska-Chorąży focuses on the local St John the Baptist's church. Elżbieta Indycka describes the cemetery located by the early mediaeval burg. Hedy M. Justus and Amanda M. Agnew provide some detailed information on the Giecz population, based on the human remains found at the location. The essay is a sort of summary of their research into the 'Giecz Collection', which includes almost 300 skeletons found locally. Borys Paszkiewicz and Maciej Syty share the topic of coins found within the former burg area. A brief summary in English is attached at the end of the book. Altogether, the book offers a doubtlessly interesting and valuable discussion of various facets and aspects of Giecz. (AG) Mirosław J. This article examines the international reception of Polish Holocaust historiography, particularly over the past three decades. It first defines the boundaries of ‘Polish historiography’, noting their lack of clarity. It briefly reviews the history of Holocaust historiography in Poland from the 1940s to the present, highlighting its pioneering beginnings, the decline after 1968, gradual revival from the 1980s, and dynamic growth in the 21st century. The authors discuss its international reception using several tools: they investigated whether and which Polish publications were mentioned in major (international, translated into various languages) syntheses and compendiums of Holocaust history; they counted how often scholars from Poland published and were cited in relevant international specialist journals; and they analyzed references to Polish publications visible in Google Scholar. On this basis, the article identifies Polish researchers whose publications are most frequently cited in the aforementioned publications, institutions with which they are affiliated, as well as areas where Polish research is most visible. The findings suggest that the presence of Polish historiography in the international arena has significantly increased, particularly in the last two decades, although its position remains relatively marginal.

Niniejszy tekst składa się z pięciu części: w pierwszej omawiam założenia oraz metody badań (zaproponuję definicję określenia „współczesny polski historyk akademicki” oraz kryteria „rozpoznawalności”); w drugiej krótko komentuję zmiany zachodzące w humanistyce jako kontekst prowadzonych badań (krytyka eurocentryzmu jako szansa dla badaczy z „epistemicznych peryferii”; zainteresowanie tendencjami, które mają tradycje w polskiej historiografii). Część trzecia – analityczna – zawiera prezentację wyników badań przypadków, tj. analizę recenzji i cytowań publikacji Joanny Wojdon (która znalazła się na pierwszym miejscu w rankingu największej liczby publikacji w języku angielskim, które ukazały się w czasie objętym badaniami, tj. 2019–2022) oraz dorobku publikacyjnego pracowników Instytutu Historii PAN, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem osiągnięć dwojga pracowników naukowych młodszej generacji – Natalii Jarskiej i Patryka Wasiaka, którzy wśród pracowników tego Instytutu znaleźli się na pierwszych miejscach w rankingu pod względem cytowań oraz wysokości h-index. W części czwartej przedstawię interpretację wyników badań, a w piątej zaproponuję strategie zwiększenia rozpoznawalności publikacji polskich historyków za granicą.

According to some scholars, Polish economic historiography after 1989 entered a stage of crisis. One of the manifestations of this is the low activity of Polish researchers in the international arena, including the World Economic History Congresses – the world’s most important economic history conference organised periodically by the International Economic History Association (IEHA). The article presents the attendance of representatives of Polish research centres at ten IEHA congresses between 1990 and 2022, detailing the achievements of Poles at successive meetings. The study is part of the research into the intellectual history of economic historiography, supplementing the irregularly published reports on individual congresses and presenting specific conclusions. Throughout the analysed period, Polish science was represented at the world forum by an average of twelve persons, which did not reflect its potential, given the traditions of Polish research, its interdisciplinarity, achievements, number of centres, or progress in institutionalisation and internationalisation. Nevertheless, the topics of the presented papers were in line with the essential trends of world science, focusing on different time-spaces and problems, especially the history of the nineteenth to twentieth century or the pre-industrial era, with a relatively weak use of quantitative methods. At the same time, the comparative focus on Polish issues is not an obstacle to strengthening the position of Polish economic historiography in the world.

Ludzie i wydarzenia”, związanego z konferencją pod tą samą nazwą, która od przeszło dwudziestu lat odbywa się w ośrodku akademickim w Piotrkowie Trybunalskim, dzisiaj Akademii Piotrkowskiej. W niniejszej książce znalazło się dwadzieścia tekstów, po-dobnie jak w ubiegłych latach niezwykle różnorodnych tematycznie. Dlatego też zdecydowaliśmy się dokonać podziału prezentowanych treści na kilka części.
W pierwszej z nich, poświęconej starożytności Szymon Mąkola z Akademii Piotrkowskiej zaprezentował swoje uwagi na temat dzieła Plutarcha z Cheronei traktującego o Aleksandrze Wielkim. Do tego samego pisarza starożytnego nawiązał w swojej pracy również Konrad Koza z Uniwersytetu Kardynała Stefana Wyszyńskiego w Warszawie, jednakże w kontekście jego traktatu dotyczącego kwestii moralności jedzenia mięsa – całość rozważań warszawskiego badacza odnosi się do wizerunku zwierząt i ich znaczenia w dziełach kilku wybranych autorów starożytnych. Część tę uzupełnia tekst Weroniki Pardel z Akademii Piotrkowskiej, która przeanalizowała wzmianki na temat kobiet, które możemy znaleźć w głównym dziele Tytusa Liwiusza. Interesująco i różnorodnie prezentuje się też dział odnoszący się do średniowiecza, który otwiera tekst przygotowany przez Matveia Alekseeva z Uniwersytetu Mikołaja Kopernika w Toruniu na temat państwa syberyjskich Chakasów w VI-XIII wieku. Jest to wprowadzenie do tematyki, która w Polsce wydaje się dość mało znana. Z kolei Jakub Grzanek z Akademii Piotrkowskiej podjął się omówienia zagadnienia dotyczącego związków pomiędzy Andaluzją a Skandynawią we wczesnym średniowieczu na przykładzie wzmianek o jednej z wypraw dyplomatycznych muzułmanów na północ. Rafał Kanas z Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego przedstawił swoje uwagi na temat etosu rycerzy zachodnioeuropejskich i farysów z Bliskiego Wschodu, próbując dokonać ich porównania. Zdecydowanie najbardziej interesującą pracą badawczą w tym dziale jest ta przedstawiona przez Alberta Prudente z Uniwersytetu Wrocławskiego na temat wizerunku Hülegü w wybranych źródłach chrześcijańskich (armeńskich) oraz muzułmańskich. Część średniowieczną uzupełnia opracowanie wybranych źródeł iberyjskich, które przygotował Mateusz Jezuit z Uniwersytetu im. Marii Curie-Skłodowskiej w Lublinie. W dziale poświęconym nowożytności Jagoda Anczakowska z Uniwersytetu Wrocławskiego zaprezentowała swoją analizę dzieła Nauki umierania chrześcijańskiego Jana Januszowskiego, natomiast Błażej Magda z Akademii Piotrkowskiej przeanalizował uwagi jakie pozostawił na temat Juliusza Cezara Napoleon Bonaparte w kontekście sztuki fortyfikacyjnej. Współczesność reprezentuje świetne studium życia jednego z mieszkańców Solca Kujawskiego autorstwa Rafała Kubiaka z Uniwersytetu Kazimierza Wielkiego w Bydgoszczy, który potrafił ukazać wpływ konfliktów międzynarodowych na losy zwykłego człowieka, odgrywającego istotne znaczenie w społeczności lokalnej. Z kolei tekst Kamila Szynala z Akademii Sztuki Wojennej odnoszący się do postaci Antoniego Szackiego należy uznać za krótki wstęp do poważniejszych rozważań.
Obszerny dział książki został poświęcony tematom związanym z historiografią i historią pamięci. W pierwszym artykule Błażej Cecota, reprezentujący Akademię Piotrkowską, kontynuuje analizę informacji zawartych w lokalnych dagestańskich dziełach historycznych, czy quasi-historycznych. Alicja Szatkowska z Uniwersytetu Wrocławskiego przedstawiła natomiast omówienie sposobu budowania pamięci na temat Anny Ostrogskiej w Jarosławiu na Podkarpaciu. Kaja Tur z Uniwersytetu Kardynała Stefana Wyszyńskiego zaprezentowała interesujące studium na temat kreowania tożsamości jednej z najbardziej znanych dzielnic Warszawy. Dział ten uzupełnia teoretyczny tekst Justyny Szablewskiej z Uniwersytetu Wrocławskiego odnoszący się do problemu istnienia, organizacji i wykorzystania archiwów Ochotniczych Straży Pożarnych jako materiałów służących m.in. kreowaniu lokalnej pamięci społecznej. W dziale prawnym Emanuel Lenart z Katolickiego Uniwersytetu Lubelskiego przedstawił kwestie związane z wykonywaniem kary śmierci wobec dzieci w Stanach Zjednoczonych. Część językoznawcza to artykuł Kamili Sygnet z Akademii Piotrkowskiej odnoszący się do literackich wyobrażeń na temat procesu powstawania mowy, a także analiza Ernesta Nowaka, który w naszym wydawnictwie przedstawia kolejne aspekty związane z badaniami warstwy kulturowej gier komputerowych. Niniejszy tom kończy krótki tekst Emanuela Lenarta na temat postaci Teda Bundy’ego.
Podsumowując, mamy nadzieję, że szeroki zakres treści podejmowanych w niniejszej książce pozwoli zainteresować nimi liczne grono odbiorców. W dziesiątym tomie znalazły się artykuły takie jak wspomnianego po-wyżej Alberta Prudente, Rafała Kubiaka, czy Justyny Szablewskiej, które powinny zwrócić uwagę nie tylko Czytelników szukających treści przybliżających dane zagadnienie, ale także specjalistów.

Niniejszy tom kontynuuje refl eksję nad miejscem i rolą historii historiografi i w ramach dyscypliny głównej jaką jest historia oraz szerzej w kontekście współczesnej humanistyki. Pola tak rozumianej historii historiografi i zaznaczyliśmy w tekście wprowadzającym do poprzedniego tomu (Historia historiografi ikryzys, recepcja, dialog, "Historia@Teoria nr 2017/1(3), s. 9-17). W drugiej części publikacji postanowiliśmy pozostać wiernymi powziętemu wcześniej projektowi, aby pokazać różnorodność sposobów myślenia i pisania o historiografi i przy jednoczesnym mierzeniu się z pytaniem o jej granice oraz wyzwania, które przed nią stawia dynamicznie zmieniający się kontekst badań historycznych i wszelkie jego pogranicza. Układ bieżącego tomu jest więc częściowo zbliżony do swego poprzednika, jednakowoż zawiera dodatkową część, poświęconą pamięci Profesora Jerzego Topolskiego . Włączenie jej uznaliśmy za celowe z wielu względów, z których najważniejszy dotyczy znaczenia. Jego badań dla wyznaczania ram i rozwoju historii historiografi i. Kontynuujemy również prezentację polskich środowisk historycznohistoriografi cznych wraz z postaciami historyków historiografi i i metodologów historii, którzy je tworzyli i nadal tworzą. Ponadto dołączamy do tego działu charakterystykę poznańskich doświadczeń w zakresie nauczania historii historiografi i. Dwa działy komplementarne: Nowe idee i konceptualizacje oraz Współczesne badania historiografi czne przynoszą teksty ukazujące wieloperspektywiczny potencjał tkwiący w podejmowanych przez historyków historiografi i tematach badawczych. Podobnie jak w przypadku poprzedniego tomu, również w tym nie dążyliśmy do ujednolicenia prezentowanych perspektyw. Uznajemy je za wartość, sądząc jednocześnie, że z tej wielości wyłania się obraz dążenia do nadania odpowiedniego znaczenia refl eksji historyczno-historiografi cznej oraz świadomości potrzeby jej rozwoju w dialogu z jej kontekstem naukowym i kulturowym.

Od Redakcji Kolejny, jedenasty numer czasopisma "Slavia Meridionalis", który oddajemy do rąk naszych Czytelników, jest głosem w dyskusji na temat dziedzictwa osmańskiego na słowiańskich Bałkanach. Dyskursy naukowe tego obszaru, do niedawna w dużym stopniu podporządkowane potrzebom ideologii narodowych, dziś czerpią obficie z dorobku myśli postkolonialnej i stopniowo odsłaniają bezmiar przemilczeń i przekłamań leżących u podstaw oficjalnych narracji, które odrzuciły osmański wpływ na własną tradycję. Długotrwały negatywny stosunek do tej części dziedzictwa kulturowego uwarunkowany był wyborem europejskiego modelu cywilizacyjnego, dokonanym w XIX wieku przez Słowian bałkańskich. Fascynacji modernizacją wtórowała jednak idealizacja swojskości. Ta zaś ukształtowała się w wyniku oddziaływania między innymi kultury ludowo-patriarchalnej i Orientu. Oscylując między fascynacją europejskimi instytucjami kultury, świadomością praktyczną a tęsknotą za bałkańsko-orientalnym habitus, elity kształtowały obraz przeszłości i teraźniejszości własnej kultury w sposób selektywny. Obecnie, obok nurtu mającego na celu ostrożne "odzyskanie" dziedzictwa osmańskiego jako ważnego tematu w refleksji o kulturach narodowych, pojawia się dążenie do jego gloryfikacji, czemu nierzadko towarzyszą anachronizmy polegające na rzutowaniu w przeszłość doświadczeń schyłku XX wieku. Na złożony stosunek do tradycji osmańskiej wciąż nakładają się czynniki światopoglądowe i polityczne. Prezentowane w tomie Problematyczne dziedzictwo osmańskie najnowsze studia i rozprawy naukowe ilustrują wielogłosowość dokonywanych dziś przez badaczy przewartościowań, a spojrzenie zarówno z perspektywy wewnętrznej, jak i zewnętrznej odsłania interesujące obszary dla dalszych naukowych eksploracji.

Cultural Heritage of the Jesuit College in kražiai: the library dziedzictwo kulturowe jezuickiego kolegium w krożach. Biblioteka Elenchus librorum veteris Collegii Crosensis anno 1803 compilatus [Buvusios Kražių kolegijos 1803 metų knygų sąrašas], vols. 1-2, ed. D. Antanavičius, Vilnius: Lietuvių literatūros ir tautosakos institutas, 2017-2018 The Jesuits have been working in Žemaitija since the 17 th century. They were brought to Kražiai by bishop Melkeris Giedraitis in 1607. First, there was a missionary station there (1608-1615), then a residence (1615-1618), and finally a college (1618-1773). The schools opened in 1616 included poetry classes and, in 1638, rhetoric for lay students was also introduced. Rhetoric for the Jesuit seminarians was taught for 45 years, with several breaks; philosophy-from 1654 to 1773 (with breaks); and moral theology-from 1633 to 1719 (with breaks). At the time of the suppression of the Jesuits, full secondary schools were operating in Kražiai, as well as a course of philosophy. After the suppression, the school was taken over by the Commission of National Education, which still employed at least nine ex-Jesuits. RESUMEN: El trabajo revisa las últimas aportaciones bibliográficas vinculadas con la figura de José Stalin, con el objetivo de analizar la importancia que los diferentes historiadores otorgan, a partir del acceso a nuevas fuentes como consecuencia de la apertura de los archivos de la ex Unión Soviética, al factor personal en la conformación del régimen.

The article is on the history of the Piarist school in Raseiniai. In terms of administration, it belonged to the Lithuanian province. Not many sources on this institution are preserved, particularly those from the 18th century, and therefore its history is litt le known. It was one of the last collegia established by this Order. After the Third Partition, it became part of the Russian state. The aim of this article is to present the school's activity; archival materials were used, which were found as a result of an inquiry in the country and the National Lithuanian Historical Archive in Vilnius and the General Archive of the Piarist Order in Rome. They have never been used by Polish scholars before. This allowed to verify and-to a great extent-supplement the current research on this school. The collegium was founded around 1743, and a school was opened at the collegium. The collegium together with the school were closed in 1833.

The purpose of publication is to reveal how the process of formation and development of the historical economy-new for the contemporary Polish historiography of the research directionappeared on the pages of the journal "Kwartalnik Historyczny". The methodology of the research is based on the principles of historicism, systematicity, scientificity, verification, authorial objectivity, moderate narrative constructivism, as well as the use of general scientific (analysis, synthesis, generalization) and special-historical (historical and genetic, historical and typological, historical and systemic) methods. The research novelty is that for the first time in historiography an attempt was made to reconstruct the process of the formation and development of the historical economy of Poland as a separate discipline on the pages of the journal "Kwartalnik Historyczny" (1887-1918). The Conclusions. A study of the publications of "Kwartalnik Historyczny" shows that the history of the Polish economy for a long time was closely linked to the reflection on the past of Polish society and government. Differentiation of issues in many points was simply impossible, since the state system led to socioeconomic relations; on the other hand, the impulses of change in the realm of law and administration were dependent on society. Historians who have specialized in these fields have been forced to focus on all these issues. This entailed the need to broaden the view of certain problems and to 47

The purpose of the research-is to demonstrate the heated discussion in the Polish historiography concerning the ancient Poland state system issues in the context of the modern typology of the scientific conflicts. The methodology of the research is based on the general scientific and special historical methods application. The principles of historicism, the objectivity and the value approach concerning the studied phenomena have been observed. The study source base has been covered and ensured by the heuristic method application. The use of the historical-genetic, historical-typological and historical-systemic methods has made it possible to reproduce and follow precisely the scientific discussions unfolding and to obtain the correct conclusions. The scientific novelty is that for the first time in historiography, the scientific controversy in the beginning of the XXth century concerning the state system of the ancient Polish state, which was developed between the scientists O. Balcer and S. Kutrzeba and was supported by other researchers, is regarded as a worldview controversy of the numerous historiographic centers and generations representatives. Conclusions.

Research on the socio-economic history of early modern Gdańsk marked the various stages of Maria Bogucka’s research career, from her doctorate in 1955 to full professorship in 1981. She came from the research grouping of Marian Małowist, and her works, along with the contributions of other students from this circle, are among the most outstanding achievements of Polish historiography of the twentieth century. This article is devoted to discussing the most important Gdańsk-related works of Bogucka against the background of German-Polish controversies, which touched upon an assessment of the city’s role in the history of Poland.

The issues of the history of culture and science of the eighteenth-century Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth are rare in the works of Józef Andrzej Gierowski. This article analyses his views on these issues. He devoted most attention to the subject of the beginnings of the Enlightenment in Poland, joining a long scholarly discussion about it. He agreed that the precursors of the Enlightenment in Poland were already active in the 1740s, during the era of the Wettins' rule. He pointed to educational reform, writing activity (Benedykt Chmielowski's, the political and journalistic work of a number of writers) and publishing (especially of the Załuski brothers), and the development of periodicals as the three pillars on which reforms were carried out in the future-during the reign of Stanisław August Poniatowski. In addition, and just as importantly, he drew attention to methodological weaknesses concerning the study of intermediate periods, i.e. between the Baroque and the Enlightenment. He also pointed out the need for a comprehensive picture of the cultural history of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in the 18 th centuryproponents of both Sarmatian culture and Enlightenment thought.

For 53 years, the Jesuit School in Chyrów (The Educational Academy of the Jesuit Fathers in Chyrów) would hire a total of 353 teachers. Many of them worked in the school in Chyrów for many years, some even 30. They would gain work experience there, but mostly committed to ed ucating young generations. The figure of a teacher is part of the school life, just the student commu nity is. Those of the teachers who pursued their profession with passion, rather than just teaching, and were role models, were memorized most effectively. They have been described in the pages of diaries, memoires and autobiographies. The present research aims to characterize the teachers of the school in Chyrów based on students' diarist records. Diaristic sources allow us to discover school life unavailable in any other materi als. They reveal the world directly witnessed by the authors and thus can provide the fundamental material for the biographical research on the memoirists as well as the people described by them. Therefore, they make it possible to represent the community of Chyrów teachers as covered in mem oires.

The book's fi ve condensed chapters may be regarded to be a psychoanalytical introduction to historical studies on the twentieth century-and, probably, not confi ned to it. The brilliant argument is concluded with a number of surprising punch-lines. The author, whose background is 'the Warsaw School' of historians of ideas, has, in a sense, built a dictionary and, primarily, developed certain research tools, offering samples of their practical application, examples of possible concepts and conceptualisations, ways of tackling the issues at the intersection of historical anthropology and contemporary psychoanalysis. Virtually, each of these essays might potentially become a germ for a larger treatise, or even wider-ranging research project. Leder seeks to identify the causative properties or subjectivity of a sovereign (Polish) nation, its historical genealogy and phantasmatic desires. He resumes a series of questions that were evoked in Polish debates of the 1990s, and a host of problems so far unexplained with use of sociological patterns. This is certainly one of the recently published major books on meanders of Polish national awareness, the origins of the native middle class, Polish-Jewish concatenations and their infl uences on the social and historical consciousness of twenty-fi rst century Poles.
