Office buildings

This paper attempts to answer two research questions. i.e., i) How to define Sustainable Development Value (SDV) from the developing country perspective? and ii) What are the relevant dimensions of sustainable development value that suit the developing country perspective? Relevant literature has been reviewed, and qualitative methodology was utilized to understand the issue. Sixteen in-depth interviews were conducted in this regard. The interviews were then transcribed and analyzed to understand the best ways to define SDV from the developing country's perspective. The findings revealed that the perception about SDV and dimensions vary from a developed country to a developing country perspective. It is expected that this study will contribute significantly to the existing body of knowledge by discussing the sustainable value phenomenon from a developing country perspective. When the consequences of Sri Lankan women migrating abroad are considered it appears that changes occur in individuals, family, community and social activities. These changes may challenge social relation, relationships. On the other hand, these network relationships have a determining influence on the degree of success or failure achieved by them.

As global warming becomes more substantial, office buildings in Malaysia widely use air conditioning as an active design solution to cool the building. However, thermal comfort is often a problem in many offices using a centralized air conditioner where occupants complain that the indoor climate is too cold. The overcooling effect is a result of over-specification of air conditioning systems, which lead to in-efficient energy consumption and thermal discomfort. This paper identifies and explains the underlying causes of over-specification of air conditioning systems. The investigation focuses on understanding the factors affecting active design decisions. A total of 39 construction consultants participated in face-to-face interviews that were conducted in individual and group meetings. Research findings revealed that the problem could be attributed to the practice of quick solutions, resistance from design consultants, a 'bigger is better' mentality, unsupportive fee structures, and poor testing and commissioning practices. The highest contributing factor is the resistance of design consultants to change and consider new solutions that break away from customary practices. The research findings provide useful information to policy makers regarding the over-cooling phenomenon in Malaysia and highlight the importance of energy efficient regulations to be imposed.

O trabalho destinou-se a verificar se um método criado pelas autoras geraria diretrizes de Design de Interiores voltadas para o bem-estar térmico e para o baixo consumo de energia em uma biblioteca universitária. Os procedimentos incluíram a criação e a aplicação de método centrado na atuação de designers de interiores e voltado
para o bem-estar térmico e para o baixo consumo de energia. Os resultados revelaram que o método cumpriu com o seu propósito, gerando diretrizes satisfatórias.

This study presents some preliminary results of an on-going European Project, RePublic_ZEB , where an analysis is conducted for identifying the cost optimal levels for the existing buildings, towards nearly Zero Energy Buildings (nZEB) performance. The analysis is applied to the reference building for an existing office building in five different countries: Italy, Portugal, Romania, Spain and Greece. The evaluation tool uses a new cost optimization procedure based on a sequential searchoptimization technique considering discrete options [2] is applied and the results will be presented in terms of optimal "package of measures", energy consumption and global costs. Finally a cross-country analysis will be performed.

Similarly to the international trends, tenant interest in green-certified office buildings has grown dramatically in Budapest in the past decade. By investigating the types of tenants who opt to lease office space in green-certified buildings in the Hungarian capital, this study aims to close a research gap. With using a mixed research method, results show that most of the green-certified office leasing transactions in Budapest between 2018-2022 were signed by tenants from IT, governmental and banking & finance sectors. Main reasons behind leasing green space are reputation, employee well-being and in the case of multinational companies, sustainability requirements from the parent company.

The Directive 2010/31/EU promotes the improvement of the energy performance of buildings within the European Union, by taking into account indoor climate requirements and cost-effectiveness. Thus, the cost optimisation is one of the main objectives of the EU regulatory framework concerning the energy performance of both new buildings and existing buildings subject to refurbishment actions. When assessing the cost-optimal levels of energy performance, the calculation of the energy needs is usually carried out by means of CEN standards or equivalent national calculation methods, based either on steady-state or on dynamic simplified models. However, many research studies have pointed out the limitations of the steady-state approach, especially for high performance buildings. Entre tais estratégias, para climas tropicais úmidos, a ventilação assume fundamental importância. Este trabalho tem por objetivo avaliar a influência da janela no desempenho térmico em edificações residenciais multifamiliares na cidade de Vitória, ES, considerando dois modelos de janelas com ênfase na ventilação natural. Office buildings consume large amounts of energy and are responsible for large amounts of greenhouse gas emissions worldwide. Among building energy efficiency measures, solar shading plays a significant role in reducing building energy consumption for cooling. This study analysed the influence of solar protection on daylighting of an open-plan office. Climate-based daylight modelling was used to predict such metrics as daylight factor, daylight autonomy and useful daylight illuminances. The results obtained showed that overhangs, and horizontal and vertical louvres have similar behaviours and sidefins have no relevance to indoor daylight conditions. In all cases, it has been proven that excessive obstruction may yield an excessive reduction in a range of illuminances between 500 and 2000 lux, increasing lighting energy consumption.

Türkiye' de çıkan yangınlar can ve mal kaybına neden olmaktadır. Bu durum haberlere yansıdığında Türkiye turizmi açısından olumsuz bir imaj çizmektedir. Otellerde müşteriler konaklama yaparken tatbikat yapma durumu söz konusu olamamaktadır. Mevcut literatür, halka açık alanlarda (tiyatro, cami vb.) tahliye süreçlerinin optimizasyonu için Pathfinder programının %100'e yakın doğrulukla sonuç ürettiği belirtilmektedir. Bu sebeple araştırmada pathfinder uygulaması tercih edilmiştir. Bu çalışma ülkemizde olan doğal afetler göz önüne alınarak pathfinder uygulaması üzerinden gerçekleştirilmiştir. Araştırmanın amacı otel mimarilerinde yapılan planlamaların afet durumlarındaki tahliye süreçlerini hesaplamak ve yeni senaryolar önermektir. Elde edilen bulgulara göre oda sayısı arttıkça tahliye süreleri artarken mimari planlamanın da bu tahliyeyi ne düzeyde arttırdığı şekiller üzerinden tartışılmıştır. Bu sebeple tek kişilik, çift kişilik ve üç kişilik odalar rastgele çizilerek müşteri tahliye süreleri odalar yan yana ve aralarda kaçış rampaları eklenerek mevcut durum otel mimarisi üzerinden ele alınmıştır. Sonuç olarak otel odalarının sayısı her ne kadar fazla olursa ticari olarak elde edilen gelir artmaktadır fakat odalardan feragat edilerek eklenecek kaçış rampaları ile misafir tahliye sürelerinin azaldığı gözlemlenmiştir. Otel mimarilerinin düzenlenmesinde bunun göz önünde bulundurulması gerektiği düşünülmektedir.

Climate-responsive architecture is gaining traction as a sustainable solution to mitigate the environmental impact of urban development. This paper presents a computational framework for synthesizing architectural morphologies that adapt to local climatic conditions and urban constraints. The goal is to optimize passive energy performance, particularly in heating, cooling, and daylighting, through parametric design and environmental simulation tools. The study utilizes generative design methods and performance-based optimization algorithms to create climate-adaptive forms at both the building and urban block levels. Results demonstrate significant potential for energy savings and improved thermal comfort, offering insights for sustainable urban design strategies in the context of climate change.

This seminar explores the impact of renewable energy adoption on the economy, with a specific focus on the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja. As Nigeria seeks sustainable solutions to its energy challenges, the transition to renewable energy sources such as solar and wind has gained significant attention. This study aims to analyze how these energy sources can influence economic growth, job creation, and investment in Abuja. Using a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods, the research examines key economic indicators, including GDP contribution, employment rates, and energy costs, to assess the overall economic implications of renewable energy adoption. Additionally, stakeholder perspectives from government agencies, local businesses, and community members are incorporated to provide a comprehensive understanding of the local context. The findings indicate that renewable energy adoption has the potential to stimulate economic growth in Abuja, create new employment opportunities, and reduce energy costs in the long term. However, challenges such as infrastructure deficits and financing obstacles must be addressed to fully realize these benefits.

Energy performance of non-residential buildings and in particular of office buildings used as bank branches is very limited. This paper presents new data from 39 representative bank branches and results from a more in-depth analysis of information from energy audits in 11 typical bank branches throughout Greece. The data was used to derive practical energy benchmarks and assess various energy conservation measures. Accordingly, the average annual total energy consumption is 345 kWh/m 2 . The breakdown of the different end-uses reveals that HVAC averages 48% of the final energy consumption, lighting averages 35% and other office and electronic equipment average 17%. The most effective energy conservation measures reach annual energy savings of 56 kWh/m 2 by regulating the indoor set point temperature, while the use of HF electronic ballasts and CFL lamps may save about 22 kWh/m 2 and 29 kWh/m 2 with and without the use of the external marquee sign, respectively.

İnşaat sektöründe, kaliteli ve çevreye duyarlı yapıların ortaya çıkmasına yardımcı olabilecek bazı araçlara ihtiyaç duyulmaktadır. Günümüz sürdürülebilir proje yönetim sürecinin yeni bir bakış açısıyla daha verimli bir şekilde yürütülmesi için, binaların sürdürülebilirlik performanslarını ölçmeye yarayan araçların varlığı oldukça önemlidir. Sürdürülebilirlik kavramının proje yönetiminde uygulamaya aktarılmasında büyük ölçüde rol oynayan, simülasyon ve analizlerle sürece katkıda bulunan bu araçların, projelerin başarıya ulaşmasında rolü çok büyüktür. Ancak, inşaat sektöründe yürütülen sürdürülebilir projelere bakıldığında, günümüz bilgi çağının olanaklarının yeterince kullanılmadığı gözlemlenmiştir. Sürdürülebilirlik hedefleri doğrultusunda kullanılan ve uygulamalarda ortaya çıkan eksikliklerin, yeterince araştırılmadığı sonucuna varılmıştır. Bu çalışmada günümüz bilgi çağının olanakları ile birlikte geleneksel proje yönetiminden farklı olarak, sürdürülebilir proje yönetimi yaşam döngüsü süreci ve bu süreçte kullanılacak araçlar değerlendirilmiş ve önerilerde bulunulmuştur. Çalışmanın ilk bölümünde, geleneksel proje yönetimi kavramıyla ilgili genel tanımlara yer verilmiş, sürdürülebilirlik kavramı ve proje yönetimi sürecine entegrasyonu ile ilgili çalışmalar incelenmiştir. İkinci bölümde sürdürülebilir proje yaşam döngüsü süreçlerinde kullanılan araçlar ve yaklaşımlar üzerine geniş bir literatür çalışması yapılmıştır. Çalışmanın üçüncü bölümünde, inşaat sektöründeki sürdürülebilir proje yönetimi süreçlerinde kullanılan araçların analiz edilmesi amacıyla dört inşaat firmasıyla görüşülmüştür. Görüşmeler sonucu elde edilen veriler değerlendirilmiştir. Dördüncü bölümde, literatür araştırması ve görüşmeler sonucu yapılan değerlendirmelerle birlikte sürdürülebilir proje yönetimi süreci ve kullanılacak araçlar üzerine bir öneri geliştirilmiştir.

This paper examines the structure and performance of the Budapest office market, with special focus on the green office building segment, as previously no such research was conducted. A so-called structure, conduct, and performance (SCP) paradigm typed analysis was conducted on 915 leasing transactions. Results showed that micro companies signed 41% of leasing contracts, with large corporations signing the highest volume. The green office market in Hungary expanded gradually, with 59% of the 915 transactions recorded in green-certified buildings. Micro companies signed 34% of the total number of green-certified transactions, followed by both large and small companies. Large corporations were responsible for 49% of office leasing transactions executed in greencertified buildings. The Hungarian office market was predominantly occupied by import-oriented companies, with 70% of transactions focused on imports and 30% on exports. There are some submarkets that are more popular among occupants, therefore the Hungarian office market can be categorized into clusters.

İnsanlık tarihi boyunca barınma, temel fizyolojik ihtiyaçlardan biri olarak önemini korumuş ve bireylerin yaşamlarını sürdürebilmeleri için vazgeçilmez bir unsur olmuştur. Bu ihtiyaç, ilk çağlardan itibaren insanların yaşadıkları coğrafi çevrenin sunduğu doğal kaynaklar doğrultusunda çeşitli çözümlerle karşılanmıştır. Erken dönemlerde insanlar, iklim koşulları, topografik yapı ve mevcut doğal malzemeler gibi çevresel etkenleri dikkate alarak taş, kerpiç, ahşap ve benzeri geleneksel yapı malzemelerini kullanarak barınaklar inşa etmişlerdir (Oliver, 2003). Bu malzemelerin kullanımı yalnızca fiziksel ihtiyaçları karşılamakla kalmamış, aynı zamanda kültürel ve toplumsal yapıların oluşumunda da belirleyici bir rol oynamıştır. Ancak, sanayi devrimiyle birlikte başlayan teknolojik ilerlemeler ve modernleşme süreci, yapı sektöründe köklü değişimlere neden olmuş; yeni, sentetik ve endüstriyel yapı malzemelerinin geliştirilmesiyle birlikte geleneksel malzemelerin kullanımı giderek azalmıştır. Beton, çelik, cam ve plastik gibi modern yapı malzemeleri, özellikle kentleşmenin hız kazandığı 20. yüzyılda mimari tasarımın ana unsurları hâline gelmiştir (Gustafson et al., 2019). Bu malzemeler, yapım sürecinde sundukları pratiklik ve hızlı üretim imkânları nedeniyle yaygınlaşmış olsa da, uzun vadede çevresel sürdürülebilirlik açısından birtakım olumsuzlukları beraberinde getirmiştir. Yüksek enerji tüketimi, karbon salımı, atık üretimi ve doğal kaynakların aşırı kullanımı gibi sorunlar, günümüzde sürdürülebilir mimarlığın önemini daha görünür kılmıştır (Ding, 2008).Bu bağlamda, mimari sürdürülebilirliğin sağlanabilmesi ve yapı sektörünün çevre üzerindeki olumsuz etkilerinin azaltılabilmesi adına geleneksel yapı malzemelerinin yeniden değerlendirilmesi ve kullanımının teşvik edilmesi gerekliliği ortaya çıkmaktadır. Geleneksel malzemeler, doğal kaynaklı olmaları, yerel iklim koşullarına uygunluk göstermeleri ve geri dönüştürülebilir yapıları sayesinde sürdürülebilir mimaride önemli avantajlar sunmaktadır (Fathy, 1986). Bununla birlikte, bu malzemelerin çağdaş ihtiyaçlara ve teknolojik standartlara uyarlanması, onları daha işlevsel ve yaygın kullanılabilir hâle getirebilir (Asdrubali et al., 2015).
Bu doğrultuda, geleneksel yapı malzemelerinin günümüz koşullarına uygun hâle getirilebilmesi için uygulanan fiziksel, kimyasal ve teknolojik iyileştirme yöntemleri çalışmada tablo formatında sunulmuştur
Sonuç olarak, iyileştirilmiş geleneksel yapı malzemelerinin mimaride daha fazla yer bulması, hem çevresel hem de ekonomik açıdan birçok olumlu sonucu beraberinde getirecektir. Doğayla daha uyumlu yapıların inşası, karbon ayak izinin azaltılması, yerel malzeme ve iş gücünün kullanımı sayesinde bölgesel kalkınmanın desteklenmesi gibi katkılar, uzun vadede sürdürülebilir kalkınma hedeflerine ulaşılmasına önemli ölçüde katkı sağlayacaktır (UNEP, 2020). Bu bağlamda, sürdürülebilir bir gelecek için mimarlıkta geleneksel malzemelerin modern tasarımla entegre edilerek yeniden değerlendirilmesi büyük önem taşımaktadır.

Vengono analizzate le principali configurazioni tipologico-funzionali che questi ambienti possono assumere e vengono individuate in particolare sei tipologie spaziali per le quali viene valutata la variazione di alcuni descrittori acustici (decadimento lineare, distanza di distrazione, tempo di riverberazione, STI) mediante il software raytracing Ramsete®. La recente letteratura tecnica è coerente nell'affermare che gli open plan office presentano condizioni ambientali peggiori degli uffici tradizionali a causa della mancanza di spazio individuale, della carenza di requisiti acustici, termici e di privacy, oltre che della cattiva qualità dell'aria e dell'elevata possibilità di distrazione per i lavoratori. Inoltre esiste una relazione evidente tra le qualità fisico-ambientali e le prestazioni dei lavoratori, nonché tra le stesse qualità e la soddisfazione degli impiegati verso il lavoro svolto. Nonostante questo, gli open plan office sono molto diffusi, soprattutto per le qualità economiche positive che rappresentano per i datori di lavoro. Il comfort acustico può essere definito come quella particolare condizione psicofisica per cui un individuo, immerso in un campo sonoro, si trova in condizioni di benessere rispetto all'attività che sta svolgendo. Esso è condizionato da fattori diversi che interagiscono tra loro come le caratteristiche fisiche della sorgente (la potenza sonora, lo spettro, la durata e l'andamento nel tempo), le caratteristiche dell'ambiente (la riflessione e la diffusione del suono), le caratteristiche individuali dei soggetti esposti (la sensibilità al disturbo e l'acuità uditiva) e l'attività svolta nello spazio analizzato. Due requisiti essenziali per la qualità acustica degli ambienti interni sono l'assenza di eccessivo disturbo e la buona ricezione.

This paper undertakes a comparative evaluation of the energy and thermal performance of apartment buildings in Albania built both Pre-90 and Post-91 (a year that marks the change of the political system from communism to democracy in Albania). Building surveys, occupant surveys and continuous monitoring of outdoor and indoor environmental conditions during the summer and winter to allow for seasonal variations, were conducted in 29 case study flats randomly selected to represent both periods. Electricity bills were also provided for a full year. It was found that electricity consumption has been 22% lower in flats built Pre-90 and that the average temperature in living rooms were found to be very close to 29°C in summer and 16°C in winter in both Pre-90 and Post-91. Notwithstanding that measured average temperatures were similar in the two building cohorts, higher range and variance on mean indoor temperature has been found in summer in the flats built Pre-90, which has affected the thermal sensation votes of occupants living in them. It was found that over 60% of residents living in apartment buildings built Pre-90 were feeling cold in winter and hot in summer, compared to 30-40% of residents living in apartment buildings built Post-91, who felt cold in winter and hot in summer respectively. Although the findings cannot be treated as statistical generalization, the analysis provides an in-depth contextual insight into environmental, thermal and energy performances of flats in Albania, which would help inform future energy retrofitting programmes.

Geleneksel ofis tasarımlarının yerini, çalışanların üretkenli- ğini artıran, esneklik sağlayan ve ergonomik konfor sunan mekânsal dü- zenlemeler almaktadır. Bu değişim sürecinde, üniversiteler ile sanayi kuruluşları arasındaki iş birlikleri, tasarım eğitimi ve uygulamalarına önemli katkılar sağlamaktadır. Akademik bilgi ile endüstriyel deneyimin birleşmesi, yenilikçi ve sürdürülebilir tasarım çözümlerinin geliştirilme- sine olanak tanımaktadır.
Bu araştırma, Haliç Üniversitesi Mimarlık Fakültesi İç Mimarlık Bölümü ile Erginoğlu & Çalışlar Mimarlık ofisi arasında gerçekleştirilen akademik ve endüstriyel iş birliğini ele alarak, ofis iç mekânlarının dönüşüm süreçlerini incelemektedir. Çalışma, çağdaş ofis ortamlarında esnek, modüler ve fonksiyonel mobilya kullanımı ile ergonomik tasarım anlayışının nasıl uygulandığını araştırmaktadır. İş yerlerinde çalışanların değişen ihtiyaçlarına uyum sağlayabilen, teknolojiyle entegre olabilen ve farklı kullanım senaryolarına cevap verebilen mekân çözümlerinin önemi vurgulanmaktadır.
Araştırmada, çalışma mekânlarının verimliliği artıran tasarım kriterleri, kullanıcı ihtiyaçlarına göre şekillenen ofis mobilyalarının fonksiyonları ve sürdürülebilir tasarım anlayışının iş yerlerindeki rolü detaylı bir şekilde ele alınmaktadır. Ayrıca, üniversite-sanayi iş birliklerinin ta- sarım eğitimine sağladığı katkılar ve öğrencilere sağladığı mesleki deneyimler analiz edilmektedir. Sonuç olarak, iş ortamlarının dönüşümünde akademik ve endüstriyel iş birliklerinin büyük bir rol oynadığı ve gelecekteki tasarım süreçlerinde bu tür ortak çalışmaların giderek daha önemli hale geleceği ortaya konmaktadır.

This state-of-the-art literature study is being conducted against the backdrop of the knowledge gap in achieving resilient buildings. It is achievable within the context of design and construction to make buildings mitigate climate change effects due to their ability to integrate energy-efficient solutions While the world is gradually transitioning to effectively using cleaner and better sources of energy like renewable energy, buildings that consume more energy must be more energy resilient and smarter towards withstanding associated crises and catastrophes that they are most often subjected to. The qualitative research involves a desktop review of peer reviewed articles downloaded from five data bases such as Scopus, Science Direct, Researchgate, Google Scholar and Web of Science were thoroughly searched using keywords such as resilience, thermal comfort, energy efficiency, occupant comfort and future weather were consulted during the period 2014-2024 where there was a systematic analysis of concepts and current trends. After thorough search, N=47 papers were selected for review from which inferences were drawn. The study revealed that it is however important to note that due to the adverse effects of unpredictable climatic trends that have arisen recently, considering resilient building design and performance at the initial and most flexible stages of a building's design becomes a very important consideration in the long run. Additionally, there are various mitigating and adoption strategies that aid enhancement of energy efficiency in building, improve thermal comfort and well-being of building occupants and also improving reductions in energy consumption. Due to the chosen research methodology, findings might not be generalizable and it is advised that further research should be conducted on the subject by adopting other research methodologies. The implications of the paper are that it would be beneficial to construction stakeholders, government policy makers, academia, building materials supplies and the business communities towards enhancing the development of the built environment further in Nigeria. The paper contributes to knowledge from this carefully researched work will be beneficial to stakeholders like academics, policy-makers, public health authorities and the business communities seeking to improve buildings' energy performances regarding resilience and adaptation strategies against climate change.

Bu tez çalışmasında, güneş enerjisi sistemlerinin çeşitleri, uygulama alanları, iyileştirmeler ve
gelişmeler, üretimde kullanılacak malzemeler ve bileşenler ile bu sistemlerin çalışma
prensipleri (örneğin, inverter ve güç dönüşümü) ele alınmıştır. Güneş enerjisinin temelleri,
dünya üzerindeki etkileri, artan nüfus yoğunluğu ve bu ihtiyaçlara yönelik ülkemizde ve
dünyada yapılan araştırma ve yatırımlar incelenmiştir.
Fotovoltaik teknolojiler kullanılarak elektrik ihtiyacını karşılamak amacıyla proje planlaması,
iklimsel ve bölgesel yer seçimi, enerji ihtiyacının belirlenmesi, panel konumlandırması ve
eğim açıları, elektrik bağlantıları ve dağıtımı gibi konular değerlendirilmiştir. Panellerin
verimliliğini etkileyen kalite, hava koşulları, sıcaklık, panel yaşı, temizlik ve bakım gibi
unsurlar da analiz edilmiştir. Ayrıca, yüksek verimli güneş panelleri, ince film teknolojileri,
tandem güneş enerjisi, optik iyileştirmeler, depolama ve batarya sistemleri gibi teknolojilerin
seçimi ve sıcak su ihtiyacı için depolama tanklarının kullanımı ele alınmıştır.
Yeni nesil panellerin verimliliği, kullanım kolaylığı, düşük üretim maliyetleri, maliyet
azaltma stratejileri ve çevresel sürdürülebilirlik konuları detaylandırılmıştır. Güneş enerjisi
projelerinin karbon ayak izi, emisyon azaltma ve istihdam olanakları üzerindeki etkileri de
incelenmiştir. Her sistemin her yerde çalışamayacağı veya düşük verimlilikle çalışacağı göz
önünde bulundurularak, uygun seçim, hesaplama, projelendirme ve malzeme seçiminin önemi
vurgulanmıştır.
Bu çalışma, güneş enerjisi projelerinin teknik, ekonomik, çevresel ve toplumsal boyutlarını
kapsamlı bir şekilde ele alarak, sürdürülebilir enerji üretimi ve kullanımına yönelik önemli
katkılar sağlamayı amaçlamaktadır.

In recent years, there has been a significant academic interest in the relationship between fractals and social networks. Both systems demonstrate complex, self-organizing patterns, making them a subject of fascination. Fractals, characterized by self-repeating geometric shapes, and social networks, which depict intricate connections among individuals or entities, share structural dynamics that are worth exploring. This research aims to investigate these parallels, with a particular emphasis on the implications of fractal patterns in various disciplines like architecture and sociology. A focal point of the study is the application of fractal geometry in the interior design of a mosque that was nominated for a prestigious Guinness award. The research examines how fractals are utilized in this case, to create visually captivating designs and to symbolize deeper spiritual and social connections. By analysing this example, the research contributes to the broader understanding of the interdisciplinary nature of fractals and their potential impact across diverse fields such as physics, architecture, and social theory. Additionally, a fictional element is incorporated to further illustrate these concepts.

Kamusal mekânlar, sosyalleşme, dinlenme, temiz havadan yararlanma ve doğayla temas kurma gibi amaçlarla ziyaret edilen, içerisinde kazanılan duygusal ve zihinsel deneyimlerin kullanıcılar için büyük önem taşıdığı mekânlardır. Kamusal alanlar, dinlenme mekânları olmanın ötesinde mimari özellikleri ve atmosferiyle duyulara hitap ederler. Sinir bilimi ile mimarlık arasındaki bağlantı, insanların mekânlarla etkileşimini ve bu etkileşimin insan davranışları ve zihinsel sağlık üzerindeki etkilerini anlamak için bir ortam sağlamaktadır. Nöromimari, insan ve mekân arasında etkili bir iletişim dili oluşturmayı hedeflemektedir. Çalışma alanı olarak; yenilikçi bir tasarıma sahip olması, yeni bir kamusal alan olarak hizmete açılması ve tasarımının geniş kitlelere hitap etmesi çeşitli nedenlerden dolayı seçilen Rami Kütüphanesi peyzaj tasarımının bu bağlamda incelenmesi, kamusal alanların insan davranışlarını ve zihinsel deneyimlerini nasıl etkilediğini anlama açısından katkı sunmaktadır. Çalışmada öncelikle nöromimari ve belirlenen tasarım kriterleri açıklanmış, Rami Kütüphanesi ve peyzaj tasarımı hakkında literatürden elde edilen bilgilere yer verilmiştir. Bu bilgiler doğrultusunda Rami Kütüphanesi peyzaj alanının nöromimari tasarım kriterlerine uygunluğu gözlem yöntemiyle tespit edilip çizelge halinde sunulmuştur. Araştırma sonuçları, nöromimari prensiplerin kamusal alanlarda uygulanmasının kullanıcıların mekânsal deneyimlerini, zihinsel, duygusal sağlığını ve davranışlarını pozitif şekilde etkilediğini aynı zamanda sürdürülebilir mimari yaklaşıma da katkısı olduğunu ortaya koymuştur. Bu bulgular, gelecekte tasarlanacak kamusal mekânların daha bilinçli şekilde planlanması için referans noktası teşkil edeceği düşünülmektedir. Nöromimari araştırmalardan elde edilen verilerin değerlendirilmesiyle, mimarlar ve şehir plancıları, kamusal mekanları tasarlarken insan davranışları ve duygusal deneyimleri nöromimari perspektiften de dikkate alarak daha etkili mekanlar tasarlama yolunda önemli bir kılavuz edinebileceklerdir.

In Brussel is er meer dan duidelijk een verandering zichtbaar in de omgang met de oude kantoorgebouwen. Al deze gebouwen die lange tijd gedoemd leken tot afbraak, krijgen tegenwoordig een nieuwe kans. Verder nog, ze zouden zelfs antwoorden bieden op alle grote vragen over duurzaamheid. De renovatieprojecten worden namelijk naar voren geschoven als energiearm en circulair en hierdoor bestempeld als pioniersprojecten binnen het duurzaam bouwen.

De projecten die onder de loep worden genomen, zijn de renovaties van de kantoorgebouwen opgetrokken in de jaren 1960 en 1970 door Groupe Structures. Deze projecten hebben allerlei ambities op het vlak van duurzaamheid zoals enorm hoge percentages in hergebruik, CO2-neutraliteit, het klimaat- en fossiele brandstofarm zijn en het hebben van een buitengewone luchtkwaliteit. Daarnaast streven bijna al deze projecten het certificaat BREEAM-Excellent na. De focus in dit onderzoek wordt gelegd op de projecten Manhattan, MULTI en ZIN aangezien deze reeds zijn opgeleverd of al redelijk ver staan in het bouwproces. Opvallend is dat deze drie projecten, ondanks het feit dat ze allemaal beweren erg duurzaam te zijn, een totaal andere aanpak hebben om deze duurzaamheidsambitie om te zetten in realiteit. Zo focust Manhattan vooral op luchtkwaliteit en besparing van energie, legt MULTI nadruk op hergebruik en zet ZIN in op recyclage. Naast de vergelijking van deze drie verschillende visies, worden drie duurzaamheidsmodellen naar voren gehaald. Zo wordt het eerder vermelde commerciële model BREEAM naast de overheidsmodel GRO en het eerder activistische 10 Principles of Ghent (ontwikkeld door Luc Eeckhout als norm voor een academische denkoefening binnen een masterstudio van de opleiding architectuur aan de KU Leuven; deze abstracte imperatieven worden in dit onderzoek ondersteund door concrete normen die ik haalde uit The Core Green Building Certification). Door de verschillende parameters van de modellen naast de ambities van de projecten te leggen, worden er drie thema’s gedestilleerd. Deze zijn energieverbruik, materiaalgebruik en toekomstgerichtheid van de ruimte. Deze thematieken worden één voor één aangevuld met de parameters van de verschillende modellen en samengebracht in een matrix. Door de drie gevalstudies hieraan te testen, verkrijgen we enerzijds verschillende uitkomsten door de verschillende insteken van de bestaande modellen en anderzijds door de verschillende projectvisies. Daarbovenop ontwikkelde ik een synthesemodel waarin ik de terugkomende parameters per thema samenbracht en aanvulde met, uit het onderzoek blijkend, ontbrekende parameters, waaraan ik de modellen opnieuw testte. Als resultaat kunnen de uitspraken en ambities over duurzaamheid van de projecten in een perspectief worden geplaatst en geeft het synthesemodel terwijl aan waar bij de bestaande duurzaamheidsmodellen nog ruimte is voor verbetering.  De duurzaamheidsambitie van projecten gaat namelijk hand in hand met de ambitie die de duurzaamheidsmodellen vooropstellen. Zolang de modellen niet ver genoeg reiken, zullen de projecten ook niet verder reiken dan tot het punt dat nu wordt bestempeld als duurzaam. Door het evalueren van de projecten en het bieden van suggesties tot verbetering van de modellen, ontstaan er kansen om meer vooruitstrevend te zijn en de toekomstige duurzaamheidsambities naar een hoger niveau te tillen.

Windows include a significant part of waste in buildings as they are transparent to solar heat and radiation. The use of shading devices is a suitable strategy to improve the energy performance of the building. In this article, specifications of an office building in Kerman are modeled in Sketch Up software. Then, by assigning materials to the building components in Open Studio software, the building is simulated. Finally, the building energy consumption in the presence of fixed external and, movable internal shading devices and simultaneous use of these two shadings, is calculated in Energy Plus software. Results show that the use of external shading devices has better performance in reducing energy consumption compared to internal movable shading devices. The external fixed shade with a depth of 150 (cm) has recorded the best result with reduction of 18.92% in annual energy consumption . The simultaneous use of external fixed shading with depth of 100 (cm) and internal movable shade with 63.57 (GJ) saving, shows the most reduction in annual energy consumption.

In this study, risk assessment of 1-story precast building is conducted in probabilistic manner by using damage probability matrices (DPMs). Peak ground velocity (PGV) is used as reference ground motion parameter to associate with structural damages and more than three hundred real earthquake records is used for nonlinear dynamic analysis of precast buildings. Three different probabilistic calculation approaches mainly based on analytical methods have been used to obtain DPMs and utilized methods are compared. Comparisons have shown that analytical methods presented herein can be used to describe the upper and lower bound of damage probabilities of precast buildings, respectively. Evaluations on the damage probabilities have also pointed out that the structural differences among the buildings, use of different probabilistic approaches and damage ratios related with structural damage costs cause remarkable differences between the damage predictions and they can be considered as primary sources of uncertainties. Logic tree method, which has ability to gather involved uncertainties, is used to carry out reliable damage assessment. Results have shown that damage ratios of precast buildings determined after logic tree analysis have a good agreement with site investigation studies of 1999 Kocaeli earthquake occurred in Turkey and presented methods can be used in risk assessment of precast industrial buildings.

For this purpose, 98 one story precast industrial buildings that represent general structural aspects of precast industrial building stock of Turkey were used. Strength and deformation capacities of buildings were determined by inelastic methods and seismic demands were calculated by nonlinear time history analyses. In order to represent low, moderate and high intensity earthquake levels, more than 300 ground motion records were used. Fragility curves of precast buildings were then constructed by comparing the displacement capacities and seismic demands. Peak ground velocity was used as ground motion parameter to construct analytical fragility curves. Assessment of inventory buildings was performed by considering the effect of lateral strength ratio, stiffness and ductility parameters. Observations have shown that probabilities of lower damage levels (slight and moderate) are almost similar and they are independent from structural parameters considered. It was also observed that ductility and lateral strength ratios (V t /W) have significant effect on seismic fragilities of precast industrial buildings at higher damage levels. Based on the observations, building stock was classified in three groups. Results have shown that strength and ductility based classification of existing precast industrial buildings is quite effective and it can be used as an important tool for the seismic assessment studies of one story precast industrial buildings.

This paper presents the results from 92 fire load density surveys conducted in 52 office buildings of Pakistan. The combination method of surveying that includes both inventory and weighing methods is used to determine the fire load of 92 office rooms, including 44 private and 48 government offices. Multiple linear regression analysis techniques are applied to assess the relationship of Fire Load Density (FLD) with variables according to the characteristics of the office rooms, such as office type, category, combustible materials, room dimensions, and ventilation conditions. Probabilistic models for FLD are developed using the regression analysis of the survey data. The survey data is further used to determine the maximum fire intensity in office buildings in Pakistan. The survey results show that the FLD increases with the increase in the area of the office. The percentage of wood is found to be the most contributing factor in the fire load. It has been noted that the fire load values are different for government and private offices, whereas the Building Code of Pakistan (BCP) has the same value for both. Statistical results presented in this study will be helpful in the fire safety and fire-resistant structure design of buildings in Pakistan.

Occupants' comfort is always crucial in determining the quality of performance of an academic building and its facilities management. Factors such as thermal, acoustic, visual comfort and personal control of the building's environmental condition generally contribute to the overall comfort level of its occupants. However, it is important to identify which of the factors contribute most to an occupant's overall comfort. Therefore, this study investigates the relationship between comfort and its contributing factors by utilizing the Building Use Studies (BUS) questionnaire from the UK. The questionnaire was distributed to respondents from one of the earliest and prominent public university in Malaysia. The paper further investigates which type of personal control significantly influences the building occupants' overall comfort. Analysis from 451 responses revealed that there is a significant correlation between overall comfort of the building's occupants with two significant contributing factors which are; air condition (thermal comfort and air quality) and personal control. However, there is insufficient evidence that noise (acoustics) and lighting (visual) have significant correlation with a building occupants' overall comfort level.

يساعد الذكاء الاصطناعي في العديد من المجالات البيئية، مثل إدارة الطاقة المتجددة، مراقبة جودة الهواء والمياه، تحسين الزراعة الذكية، وتقليل النفايات عبر إعادة التدوير الذكي. كما يُستخدم في التنبؤ بالكوارث الطبيعية واتخاذ قرارات سريعة للحد من الأضرار، مما يسهم في حماية المجتمعات والأنظمة البيئية.

إن دمج الذكاء الاصطناعي مع الاستدامة البيئية يمثل خطوة مهمة نحو مستقبل أكثر خضرة وذكاءً، حيث يمكن للتكنولوجيا أن تعمل جنبًا إلى جنب مع الطبيعة بدلاً من أن تكون سببًا في استنزافها. ولكن يبقى التحدي في كيفية استخدام هذه التقنيات بشكل مسؤول لضمان تحقيق توازن بين التطور التكنولوجي وحماية البيئة للأجيال القادمة.

Energy certification systems are used to labeling or quality assurance for sustainable buildings on the planet. Different certification, organizations or associations used some parameters for evaluating the buildings. Product or system integrated design is an approach that brings together different actors across the life cycle, providing new perspectives early within the design process. The integrated design process is increasingly utilized in the building design and construction sectors because it brings immediate value to the method. The integrated design facilitates sharing the knowledge among stakeholders, optimizing project management and merchandise quality. the method also helps minimize unforeseen costs and issues later within the process. This study is aimed to form a comparative assessment on the interaction between integrated architectural design and therefore the sustainability certificates which are used for the evaluation of sustainable buildings. The research question of this study is how and in what level integrated architectural approaches and integrated building design processes are in interaction to impact categories of energy certification systems. Seven university buildings from Istanbul had been applied to the assessment of the interaction between the impact categories of the chosen energy certification system which was LEED within the case study with basic principles of the integrated design process. The results show us that there's a robust correlation between the integrated design process and high scores within the impact categories of LEED certificates in some basic categories.

A community food hall's Teaching Kitchen lighting design within expressly focuses on coordination with its spatial and cultural context. The objective analysis lay study out of precedent does not mention this value addition. The solutions envision all these three components working together which tends to reduce self-interests of each. By reorganizing design, replacing shading systems and employing solar control glass improved performance significantly, posting UDIa of 75.1%, sDA of 100% and ASE to 18.3%. It reiterates the centrality of design in performing the dual functions of energy efficiency as well as thermal comfort for the users.

Thermal and visual comfort in buildings play a significant role on occupants' performance but on the other hand achieving energy savings and high comfort levels can be a quite difficult task especially in high rise buildings with highly glazed façades. Many studies suggest that the energy needed to keep the interior conditions at required comfort levels in buildings depends on several factors such as physical and optical properties of building elements, indoor and outdoor climate and behaviour of the occupants, etc. Moreover depending on the different orientation of building facade, the impact of these parameters might vary. The buildings are usually designed without paying much attention to this fact. The needs of each building zone might differ greatly and in order to achieve better indoor environment, different actions might be needed to taken considering the individual characteristics of each zone. In the proposed research the possibilities of evaluating building energy and comfort performance simultaneously taking into account the impact of facade orientation with use of whole building energy simulation tools are investigated through a case study.

Eğitim sürecinin iki aktörünün akademisyenler ve öğrenciler olduğu düşünülürse, öğrencilerle oluşturulacak diyalog ve tartışma ortamına paralel olarak, öğrencilerden alınacak geribildirimler işitsel çevre tasarımına dikkat çekmek açısından önemlidir. Bu çalışmada akustik ile ilgili seçme ders kapsamında dönem başında ve sonunda öğrencilerle yapılan anket çalışmaları sunulmuştur. Çalışmanın amacı, öğrencilerin işitsel farkındalıklarını ve mimarlık eğitimi ile ilgili görüşlerini alarak, gelecekte planlanacak eğitim modeli önerilerine ışık tutmaktır. Yöntem olarak, likert ölçekte ve ucu açık olarak hazırlanan anket soruları SPSS istatistik programı ile analiz edilmiştir. Bulgular arasında en dikkat çeken performans mekanları dışındaki mekanların işitsel koşullarının mimarlık eğitimi boyunca yeterince sorgulanmadığıdır. Sonuç olarak, işitsel çevre tasarımına da önem verilmesi noktasında proje ve ders yürütücülerine sorumluluk düşmektedir. Öğrencilerden alınan geribildirimlere göre farkındalığı artıracak yeni eğitim yaklaşımları değerlendirilerek geliştirilmelidir.

Çalışmanın amacı, öğrencilerin işitsel farkındalıklarını ve mimarlık eğitimi ile ilgili görüşlerini alarak, gelecekte planlanacak eğitim modeli önerilerine ışık tutmaktır. Yöntem olarak, likert ölçekte ve ucu açık olarak hazırlanan anket soruları SPSS istatistik programı ile analiz edilmiştir. Bulgular arasında en dikkat çeken performans mekanları dışındaki mekanların işitsel koşullarının mimarlık eğitimi boyunca yeterince sorgulanmadığıdır. Sonuç olarak, işitsel çevre tasarımına da önem verilmesi noktasında proje ve ders yürütücülerine sorumluluk düşmektedir. Öğrencilerden alınan geribildirimlere göre farkındalığı artıracak yeni eğitim yaklaşımları değerlendirilerek geliştirilmelidir.
