Non conventional computing

Life as an N-P problem is a philosophical, scientific and engineering concern. N-P problems can be understood and worked out via artificial life. However, these problems demand a new understanding of engineering, since engineering is basically a way of acting upon the world. Such a new engineering is known as non-conventional engineering or also as complex systems engineering. Bio-inspired systems are more flexible and allow a higher number of degrees of freedom. As a consequence, AL enlarges our understanding of living systems in general and can be taken as a step forwards in grasping the complexity of life.

In this paper an algebraic methodology is used to study the dynamics of unidimensional cellular automats with values within the finite field of two elements, with conditions of periodic limits that, besides, satisfy a property named additivity (shared only by rules 90 and 150). Specifically, results related to limit cycles for rule 150 are presented and compared

For data ciphering a key is usually needed as a base, so it is indispensable to have one that is strong and trustworthy, so as to keep others from accessing the ciphered data. This requires a pseudo-random number generator that would provide such a key, so it is proposed to work with cellular automata helped along with \emph{Mathematica} to check that the rules and to what level are actually pseudo-random. This project centers on the examination of possible mathematical rules, analyzing their characteristics in a detailed manner, and submitting them to a set of randomness tests with the end of knowing which of them will enable us to obtain those pseudo-random numbers that will conform the key for data ciphering.

El paper que aquí se presenta constituye una de las primeras elaboraciones en castellano sobre autómatas celulares y modelos basados en agentes aplicadas a la arqueología. De hecho, el artículo precede a una elaboración semejante desarrollada en mi libro Complejidad y Caos: Una exploración antropológica (Buenos Aires, Sb, 2006). Elaborado a fines de 2003, se presentó en público en el Coloquio Internacional de Antropología del Desierto que tuvo lugar en la ciudad de Tijuana en junio de 2004.

Dado que en aquel entonces tenía otros compromisos, la presentación fue leída por la arqueóloga Adriana Callegari, quien concurrió al evento.

Complex systems studies can be approach through computer systems simulation and,the study and design of simple systems that present complex system’s characteristics. The fist one perform, among other things, simulations of animal collective behavior like shoals and flocks; in the second category falls boolean networks, coupled maps and cellular automata, thereof presents all the desirable characteristics of complex systems.
The global dynamics exhibited by cellular automata has been the goal of many analysis, among themselves the mean field theory, thereof shows evidence of non-trivial collective behavior. In this thesis we made a systematic study, by correlation statistical methods between evolution spaces. Patterns in evolution can be distinguished with this approach and also the randomness of the rule, through which can describe a classification for cellular automata, parallel to Wolfram’s classification.
By these, we try to explore collective behavior and non-trivial collective behavior in cellular automata dynamics. Also, it presents an exploration between parameters that had shown characterize cellular automata behavior, like Z and λ parameters, and collective behavior and statistical studies.
