Modern political theory

Modern political theory largely consists of the history of Europe as a political and ideational project. For this reason, the study of political theory has been challenged for it's Eurocentrism, it's white-male perspective, and the fuzzy divisions separating the ancient, modern, and contemporary periods. In this course, we will pursue a relatively non-traditional reading of modern political theory, with a particular focus upon the uses of history for understanding politics. A contention made prominently by thinkers associated with the Cambridge School is that the history of political thought must be interpreted in its historical context. So too, many of the most famous and canonical works in political theory are also histories. As Joshua Foa Dienstag (2017) recently articulated, one way of reading modern political theory is as a collection of historical examples. In pursuing this reading of the tradition, we will pay close attention to four political theorists: Niccolò Machiavelli, Alexis de Tocqueville, Karl Marx, and W.E.B. Du Bois. This course will require an in-depth reading of three so-called "Great Books" of modern political theory. Our study will investigate four historical case studies: a comparison of the Roman Empire with the Italian Renaissance, the French Revolution, then 1851 French coup d'état, and the U.S. American Civil War and Reconstruction. Each of the thinkers we are studying are notable for centering the role of social forces in the making of history. Each of the historical case studies are noted as ending in failure. This course will examine the development of these themes within modern political theory as part of a broad effort to understand the development of the modern political world.

Bu çalışma Alex de Tocqueville’in Cezayir meselesi hakkında ortaya koyduğu görüşleri ve bu görüşlerdeki tarihsel değişimi değerlendirme amacını taşımaktadır. Çalışmada, Tocqueville’in Cezayir konusundaki güvenlikçi ve otoriter kaygılar taşıyan yazılarının değerlendirilmesinin onun, çerçevesi Amerika’da Demokrasi’de çizilen liberal tavrının sınırlarının anlaşılması açısından da hayati nitelikte olduğu düşünülmektedir. Çalışmanın kapsamı Tocqueville’in özellikle 1831-1847 tarihleri arasında genelde sömürgecilik, özelde ise Cezayir konusundaki yazılarıyla sınırlı tutulmuştur. Tocqueville’in, Cezayir’in koloni haline getirilmesi süreci hakkındaki görüş ve önerileri, betimleyici, mukayeseli ve özellikle eleştirel bir yöntem yoluyla ele alınmıştır. Tocqueville her ne kadar 1837’de Cezayir’i henüz görmeden önce kaleme aldığı mektuplarında Avrupalı yerleşimciler ile yerli halk arasında bir entegrasyonun sağlanabileceğine inanmış olsa da; ilk Cezayir seyahati sonrası onun bu romantik tavrının Makyavelist ve pragmatist bir yaklaşımla yer değiştirdiği ileri sürülmektedir. Bu dönemdeki yazılarında Tocqueville’in medeni bir var oluş ve kültürel seviyeye sahip olduğuna itibar etmediği Cezayir gibi Avrupa dışı bir toplumun insan hak ve özgürlüklerini öncelik konusu olmaktan çıkarabildiği gözlemlenmektedir. Bu çalışma bir yandan Tocqueville’in liberal özgürlük kavramının tarihsel kazanımlarına sunduğu katkıları göz ardı etmeksizin; onun sömürgecilik hareketlerini değerlendiriş biçimi söz konusu olduğunda ise gerektiğinde moral değerleri bir tarafa bırakabildiği ve Fransa’nın uluslararası çıkarlarının sadık bir savunucusu haline gelebildiğini gösterme amacını taşımaktadır.

İnsan, doğası gereği sosyopolitik yapı içerisine hapsedilmiş zoon politikon`dur. Nitekim insan, tarihin her aşamasında içerisinde bulunduğu sosyopolitik yapının sınırlarını öğrenme ve bu doğrultuda “ideal sistemler” keşfetme ihtiyacı duymuştur. Belirli bir halk/milletin belirli toprak parçası üzerindeki siyasî durumu olan devlet, modern insan açısından aşılamaz bir gerçekliktir. Fakat 20. yüzyıla gelindiğinde devletin “aşkın siyasî güç” olma özelliği liberal ve anarşist dünya görüşlerince sekteye uğratılmıştır. Liberal ve anarşist dünya görüşlerine meydan okuyan 20. yüzyılın en önemli isimlerden biri Carl Schmitt`dir. 20. yüzyılın ekonomi-teknik dünya görüşüne karşı Schmitt`in silahı “siyasal kavramı”dır.  Schmitt, 20. yüzyılda “devlet” kavramıyla ilgili anlayışlarda yaşanan krizi, “siyasal kavramı”ndan hareketle bertaraf etmeğe çalışmıştır. Schmitt`in “devlet” kavramlaştırması, özellikle “siyasal kavramı”nın iki temel sütunu olan jus belli ve hostis kavramları üzerinden gerçek siyasî hüviyete kavuşmaktadır. Dolayısıyla bu çalışmada 20. yüzyılın önemli Türkçü ideologlarından biri olan Hüseyin Nihâl Atsız`ın kaleme aldığı eserler, Schmitt`in “politik olan” ve “devlet” kavramlarıyla ilgili anlayışlar esas alınarak çözümlenmeye çalışılmıştır. Çalışma boyunca Atsız fikriyatının temel yapıtaşı olan “ülkü” kavramının Schmitt`in “siyasal kavramı”yla olan benzer ve farklı tarafları açığa çıkarılmaya çalışılmıştır. “Ülkü” kavramından hareketle Atsız`da mümkün “devlet” biçiminin sınırları, Schmitt`in “devlet” kavramlaştırması esas alınarak saptanmaya çalışılmıştır. Bu bakımdan tezin temel önermesi, politik olan olarak “ülkü” kavramından yola çıkarak Atsız`da “devlet” kavramlaştırması yapılabilir olmaktadır.

We intend to present how the principles of political right that are at the convention that founds the political and moral body are resultant of Rousseau's natural right critiques. L'immensité du territoire est-elle un attribut nécessaire de l'empire ? Un empire n'est-il qu'un royaume plus vaste ? Reprenant les interventions du colloque qui s'est tenue à la Maison française d'Oxford en juin 2018, cet ouvrage interroge les liens développés depuis le Moyen Âge entre l'idée d'empire et son expression géographique. Plus précisément, il réfléchit à la relation entre rationalité politique impériale et configuration territoriale à travers quelques études de cas tirées des royaumes de Sicile, de France, de Hongrie, d'Espagne et d'Angleterre.

Is  vastness of territory a necessary attribute of empire? Is an empire just a larger kingdom? Re-elaborating interventions at the scholarly conference held at the Maison Française in Oxford in June 2018, this book questions the links developed since the Middle Ages between the idea of empire and its geographical expression. More specifically, it reflects on the relationship between imperial political rationality and territorial configuration through some case studies drawn from the kingdoms of Sicily, France, Hungary, Spain and England.

La vastità del territorio è attributo necessario di imperialità? Un impero è solo un regno più grande? Rielaborando gli interventi al convegno scientifico tenutosi alla Maison Française di Oxford nel giugno del 2018, questo libro mette in discussione i legami sviluppati a partire dal Medioevo tra l’idea di impero e la sua espressione geografica. Più precisamente, riflette sul rapporto tra razionalità politica imperiale e configurazione territoriale attraverso alcuni casi di studio tratti dai regni di Sicilia, Francia, Ungheria, Spagna e Inghilterra.

Não há como falar dos Princípios do Direito da Guerra de Rousseau sem falar em seu projeto maior, da obra que coroaria sua carreira de escritor político. Trata-se obviamente do projeto das Instituições Políticas, imaginado por Rousseau durante o período em que trabalhou como secretário da Embaixada da França em Veneza, entre os anos de 1743-1744. Os Princípios do Direito da Guerra integrariam a segunda parte das Instituições Políticas, aquela que trataria do direito das gentes, do comércio, do direito da guerra e das conquistas etc. Entretanto, esse projeto, que deveria “selar a carreira do autor”, após anos de meditação acabou sendo abandonado. Conforme seu relato apresentado nas Confissões, “após ter trabalhado cinco ou seis anos a obra em questão não estava nada adiantada”, fato que o leva a abandonála no ano de 1759.

Ο Μακιαβέλι θεωρείται ο θεμελιωτής της νεότερης πολιτικής θεωρίας. Οι περισσότεροι από τους μεγάλους πολιτικούς στοχαστές έχουν μελετήσει ή/και σχολιάσει το έργο του. Πολλοί έχουν επηρεαστεί σημαντικά από αυτό. Η σχετική βιβλιογραφία είναι από τις εκτενέστερες στις ανθρωπιστικές σπουδές. Στη χώρα μας, δυστυχώς, δεν ευτύχησε ανάλογης μεταχείρισης. Το έργο του δεν έχει μεταφραστεί στο σύνολό του και οι σχετικές μονογραφίες είναι ελάχιστες. Φωτεινή εξαίρεση αποτελεί η πρωτοπόρα μεταφραστική και ερμηνευτική εργασία του Π. Κονδύλη. Στο πλαίσιο αυτό, ο Έλληνας αναγνώστης του Μακιαβέλι έρχεται αντιμέτωπος με ένα κενό, στο οποίο βρίσκει χώρο για να εγκατασταθεί ο μύθος του «μακιαβελικού», δηλαδή ενός κυνικού τρόπου αντιμετώπισης της πολιτικής.
Ενάντια σε αυτόν τον μύθο, τα κείμενα του βιβλίου προβληματοποιούν όψεις του μακιαβελικού έργου, και συνεπώς των θεμελίων της νεωτερικότητας:  καταδεικνύουν ότι έννοιες παραμελημένες μέχρι τώρα στον ελληνικό χώρο (η επιθυμία, ο διχασμός, η προοπτική) αποτελούν κοινούς τόπους των μακιαβελικών σπουδών, αναδεικνύουν τη σχέση του Μακιαβέλι με τη δημοκρατική και τη σοσιαλιστική θεωρία, και στρέφουν την προσοχή στα λιγότερα μελετημένα έργα του.
Φιλοδοξούμε, λοιπόν, ότι ο τόμος θα δώσει στους αναγνώστες και τις αναγνώστριες τόσο ένα νήμα για να εισέλθουν και να περιπλανηθούν στο έργο του Φλωρεντινού στοχαστή όσο και το έναυσμα για να αμφισβητήσουν τη μυθική εικόνα του «μακιαβελικού» Μακιαβέλι, να προχωρήσουν στη μελέτη των σύγχρονων ερμηνειών του αλλά και να σκεφτούν με τρόπο διαφορετικό την πολιτική.

The aim of this chapter is to problematize common ideas about the contractarian tradition in Europe in relation to family issues. To avoid an anachronistic selection of famous authors, I draw on a list of contractarian texts from 1816 and sort the family themes in this corpus (of about 10,000 pages). The first two sections introduce the list and outline the diversity it manifests. The next sections use these sources to provide information on five topics: Family Inheritance and Succession; Marriage; House Rule and Citizenship; Public and Private; Social Relations Outside Europe. One of the findings is that the tracts studied vary widely. It is therefore difficult to make a general statement about contractualism. Today, many seem to be under the spell of Rousseau's Contrat social, the most famous but certainly not the most typical text of the contractarian legacy.

The thesis examines what Englishmen meant when they referred to a 'contract' in political discussions around the time of the 1688 Revolution. The study of the immense volume and considerable variety of writings referring to 'contract' reveals that our histories of late seventeenth century political thought, and of Contract Theory in particular, have misrepresented the meaning of the ideas. It appears that there was no single Contract Theory and that appeal to 'contract' was not the monopoly of one particular group, party or side in the political controversies of the period. If we concentrate on what the term 'contract' was used to denote in political writing, we are confronted by a near hopeless confusion. Ifs however, we look to the connotations of the term and the coherence of arguments invoking a 'contract', a very clear, distinctive and significant division of contractarian writing emerges. The presentation aims to highlight the links between Africa and Europe in the experience of Jewish camps during the Second World War. There are few studies on the presence of German labour camps in African territory; Albert Memmi's diary, recently edited by Guy Dugas (2019), has a unique perspective on the Tunisian ones, which the writer briefly experienced in 1943. Some material from this little-known diary then flowed into his famous autobiographical novel, La statue de sel (1953).
My most recent research, based on an exhaustive study of both the diary and the book, insists on the liminal nature of the young author/protagonist, divided between family tradition and Western rationalist education, always on the threshold of a polarization. In this framework, Memmi's social position can be analyzed in the light of Pierre Bourdieu's sociological theory, which sees in the so-called 'forms of capital' (i.e. resources to act) the possibility of mutually converting value or social prestige (Bourdieu, 1972). Memmi often remains on the edge of these capitals, thus maintaining a marginal status.
However, once Memmi's choice of relying on his 'cultural capital' has been established (i.e. education, rather than focusing on economic and social resources), it can be noted how much this choice is not equally advantageous in any context. For example, within the labour camp, a Bourdiesian 'field' (Cerulo, 2010), an intellectual like him finds himself in possession of a remarkable cultural resource that is yet not consistently effective, as he remains between respect and suspicion in that place.
I then noted significant similarities in Western writers who witnessed concentration camps, such as the Spanish Jorge Semprùn and the Italian Primo Levi. The former being a philosophy student, the latter a chemist, they both belong to the Memmian category of young intellectuals with the consequent boundary condition. The comparative analysis is developed on the specific issues of literary approach to Memory and preservation of humanity, but importance is also given to communication with the Other. Considering the due differences between Africa and Europe, a uniform picture can be drawn from this intellectual introspection which shows the common traits of the same modern world (Bauman, 1989).

The concept of "power" occupies a dominant place in "Modern Political Theory". Although there exist confusion and disagreement among scholars and the practitioners of politics on the definition and nature of political power, none qualms about its significance. The concept of power is generally regarded as a key concept in modern political science and is perhaps the most fundamental in the whole of Political Science, This paper discusses the meaning, nature, manifestations and kinds of power. The arguments and analysis of the concept is buttressed by citing examples from Indian Politics. It is an exploratory essay written for the students pursuing graduate course in Political Science.

For partisans of a contemporary wave of interest in the rediscovery of ‘the political’, the thought of Hannah Arendt offers a seemingly ineluctable intellectual resource. Inasmuch as the problem of totalitarianism is at the core of Arendt’s thought, her sympathy towards this attempt to enlist her in the service of this cause must be imagined to bear heavily upon the place of ‘the political’ in her treatment of totalitarianism itself. This note on Arendt’s thinking on the political thereby proceeds from the claim that there are, at heart, two divergent conceptions of totalitarianism in the cumulative literature on the subject. The first of these, I want to argue, is presently the dominant conception of totalitarianism. Whilst the politics of reproduction have been at the heart of feminist struggles for over a century and a half, their analysis has not yet come to occupy a central place in the interdisciplinary study of citizenship. प्रस्तुत शोध पत्र में वर्तमान कोविड-19 युग के परिप्रेक्ष्य में भारतीय विदेश नीति का विवेचन किया गया है। इसके अंतर्गत भारत के पड़ोसियों, महाशक्तियों के साथ ही विश्व की प्रमुख राज व्यवस्थाओं के साथ भारतीय सम्बन्धों की चर्चा की गई है तथा भारतीय विदेश नीति के भविष्य की संभावनाओं पर भी विचार किया गया है।

Esta dissertação apresenta a concepção rousseauniana de direito político com enfoque aos limites e as possibilidades de transformar uma sociedade instituída na desigualdade em uma sociedade mais livre e democrática, por meio da abordagem central do problema da elaboração da Constituição e do papel do Legislador. Rousseau expôs uma crítica à fundação da sociedade utilizando-se do modelo contratualista (estado de natureza Estado civil) para refletir sobre a natureza humana e seus atributos fundamentais (autoconservação, piedade natural, liberdade natural e perfectibilidade), assim como a origem das desigualdades civis entre os homens. Com o auxílio de seu método histórico-hipotético, afirmou que a desigualdade civil não advém da natureza, mas do estabelecimento de um conjunto de convenções sociais que acabaram por degenerar o desenvolvimento da sociedade (pacto dos ricos, instituição da propriedade privada, lei do mais forte, entre outros). Sobre a relação entre economia e política, inferiu que para que a economia de um Estado possa resguardar os pobres da influência econômica dos ricos e para que possa ser considerada popular ou legítima, a vontade geral dos cidadãos e a atividade dos governantes precisam estar unidas sob um interesse comum. Por meio de uma economia regulada por uma política pautada na soberania popular, Rousseau propôs uma série de medidas restritivas com o objetivo de reduzir a disparidade econômica entre os membros do Estado. Ademais, propôs na obra o Contrato Social um novo modelo de associação civil, instituída por um pacto social que tem por objetivo assegurar a liberdade civil entre os cidadãos graças à igualdade jurídica do contrato. Para que tal associação se efetive, é necessário a mediação legislativa da figura do Legislador, agente público esclarecido capaz de realizar a mediação entre o espaço da manifestação da vontade geral - onde são elaboradas as leis por meio da deliberação do povo em assembleias civis - e o espaço de sua execução pelo governo instituído. Por meio dessas condições, o povo tem a possibilidade de garantir seus direitos e deveres, assim como o estabelecimento de leis apropriadas à manutenção da liberdade civil e do bem comum. Estas leis são o resultado da manifestação da vontade geral, ou seja, produto do exercício da liberdade civil de cada cidadão, fruto da participação ativa do povo no processo legislativo, expressas na Constituição. Para Rousseau, o governo é responsável pela execução das leis obedecendo as diretrizes da soberania popular, garantido assim a legitimidade do poder político instituído. Para tal fim, a democracia corresponde ao tipo de governo que mais se aproxima e contribui para a manutenção do bem comum, da participação política do povo, assim como os pressupostos legítimos do direito político, garantindo por fim, a liberdade civil e a igualdade de fato na comunidade política. Veremos por fim, que o processo legislativo culmina na composição da Constituição, que necessita estar aberta para a formação da nova sociedade e que possa dialogar permanentemente com as contradições reais da população, sempre em busca por condições políticas e sociais favoráveis a manutenção do direito político na comunidade política.

Federalist Papers N. º1, N. º2 Resumo: Os Papéis Federalistas são uma compilação de ensaios políticos do século XVIII. Nova York foi um dos estados em que a disputa pela ratificação da Constituição estava em pleno andamento no outono de 1787. Depois do envio Constituição aos estados para validação, vários ensaios apareceram nos jornais de Nova York argumentando que Nova York deveria ratificar a Constituição. Em resposta, Hamilton, Madison e seu amigo, político John Jay, decidiram escrever uma série de artigos para influenciar o público a favor da Constituição. Abstract: The Federalist Papers were a compilation of political essays from the 18th century. New York was one of the states where the contest over the ratification of the Constitution was in full swing in the fall of 1787. Shortly after the Constitution was sent to the states for validation, several essays appeared in New York newspapers arguing that New York should not ratify the Constitution. In response, Hamilton, Madison and their friend, politician John Jay, decided to write a series of articles to sway the public in favor of the Constitution.

Os paper 10 e 51 de O Federalista, escritos por James Madison são os artigos mais famosos desta obra que conta com um total de 85 artigos escritos pelo próprio James Madison, Alexander Hamilton e John Jay. Paper número 10 Começando pelo paper número 10, Madison começa por relatar que naquele momento existe uma preocupação geral com a instabilidade do governo e esta deve-se em grande parte às rivalidades das diferentes fações. As pessoas culpam os governos e as medidas tomadas por estes, alegando que as mesmas não satisfazem as minorias, mas sim as maiorias interessadas. O autor define fação como um número de indivíduos em maioria ou minoria face à sociedade, que são ligados por um ideal ou interesse comum, frequentemente contrários aos interesses da comunidade. Como solução para acabar com as fações, Madison diz que existem duas formas. A primeira é acabar com a liberdade, a segunda é criar uma sociedade com as mesmas opiniões, paixões e interesses. Apesar de enunciar estas duas premissas, rapidamente afirma que as mesmas são impraticáveis e enquanto o ser humano possuir razão, liberdade e diferentes opiniões, este irá juntar-se com aqueles que têm opiniões e pontos de vista parecidos aos seus, ou seja, a existência de fações é inevitável. O autor enumera vários assuntos que levam os indivíduos a dividirem-se, como a religião, o governo, fidelidade a diferentes chefes ou paixões humanas. No entanto, apesar de tudo isto, Madison afirma que a desigual distribuição de propriedade é a maior razão que leva à divisão da sociedade em várias fações. Desde logo, a divisão daqueles que possuem mais propriedade e os que possuem menos ou nada, sendo que além disto existem vários tipos de propriedade e diferentes interesses. São as diferentes fações com interesses e opiniões diferentes que constituem o principal obstáculo à legislação e ao governo. Em seguida, James Madison chega à conclusão de que como já referiu a liberdade e o livre-arbítrio que os homens detêm e têm o direito de ter, e por consequência a livre e normal associação a fações leva a uma nova discussão. Visto que as fações são indispensáveis, existe o problema de uma fação que possui a maioria seja capaz de controlar a sociedade com a finalidade de promover os seus objetivos. Ora, esta situação representa um problema para as fações minoritárias, uma vez que nos governos populares ganha sempre a maioria. Esta linha de pensamento leva o autor a encontrar um problema na democracia, o facto de não representar as minorias sendo isso uma fonte de discórdia. No seguimento deste obstáculo, Madison vai apresentar a república como uma solução face à democracia, dizendo mesmo que a primeira é o remédio da segunda. Alexander Hamilton, James Madison e John Jay, vivamente contra aquilo que esta propõe, tomam a liberdade de escrever uma compilação de textos em que defendem o porque da divisão da América em confederações não ser, de todo, uma boa ideia. Os argumentos são firmes, estando apoiados em situações reais em que nações vizinhas, em vez de se apoiarem, travam longas e violentas guerras entre si, explicam o porquê de tal acontecer e o porquê de ser algo que não tende a mudar.

It is considered to be a political utopia that proposes an ideal state, which guarantees the rights of all citizens. In this book, Rousseau seeks a legitimate social state, close to the general will. 0. Introdução O segundo livro dá continuidade à discussão já iniciada no primeiro sobre a formação de uma sociedade. Rousseau, nos 12 capítulos que constituem o segundo livro, demonstra que apenas a vontade geral habilita o soberano a agir. O poder do governo é limitado à manutenção da igualdade entre todos, o que acaba por ser um paradoxo, uma vez que a existência de um governo sugere uma contenção de liberdades. A fim de preservar o delicado equilíbrio de um governo e consequentemente impedir qualquer abuso do poder, é estritamente necessário um Estado conciso e é precisamente essa a temática a ser abordada. 1. Desenvolvimento O primeiro capítulo, "A soberania é inalienável", inicia com uma afirmação que vem revelar o objetivo da instituição de um Estado: "A primeira e mais importante consequência dos princípios acima estabelecidos está em que somente a vontade geral tem possibilidade de dirigir as forças do Estado, …". 1 A Soberania é o exercício da vontade geral e esta nunca pode ser alienada. O soberano é visto como um ser coletivo, que pode ser representado apenas por si mesmo. É inverosímil que um acordo seja duradouro e constante; pois a vontade particular tende à parcialidade, enquanto a vontade geral tende à igualdade. Porém, Rousseau reconhece que "Se o povo, portanto, promete simplesmente obedecer, dissolve-se em consequência desse ato, …" 2. No segundo capítulo, apelidado de "A soberania é indivisível", apercebemo-nos que a soberania pela mesma razão que a torna inalienável, também é indivisível; "…porque a vontade é ou não é geral, é a vontade do corpo do povo ou apenas de uma parte dele" 3. Os teóricos políticos cometem o erro de dividir a soberania de acordo com o seu objeto, "em força e vontade; no poder legislativo e no poder executivo; em direitos de tributação, justiça e guerra; administração interna e poder do tratado estrangeiro" 4. Rousseau alega que é inapropriada a divisão da soberania e que este é um erro que decorre da falta de conhecimento das noções de autoridade do soberano.

Also, this novel offers a strong Jacobin criticism of radical French revolutionary politics, as well as scandals of class and gender oppression. The Natural Daughter touches on the considerably relevant political issues seen in the wake of the French Revolution, as it is a literary critique acting as a call for social change in a time of trepidation and radical governance. The Natural Daughter follows Martha, who individuates from others in society-based on her actions and opinions-as she struggles to achieve independence in a society full of misogyny. Robinson subtly constructs similarities concerning events in the novel with the French revolution.

Resumo: O federalismo surge nos Estados Unidos após a independência das 13 colônias britânicas, que por proteção se reúnem em uma Confederação. Em 1787, na Convenção de Filadelfia surge a necessidade de criação de uma constituição, junto ao surgimento de um novo sistema de governo que será defendido pelos autores da obra retratada neste trabalho. Introdução A obra "Os artigos federalistas" de James Madison, Alexander Hamilton e John Jay é composta de artigos que explicam e defendem os princípios do governo republicano e a constituição, buscando persuadir o Estado de Nova Iorque a ratificar a nova Constituição elaborada na Convenção de Filadélfia, pois era necessária a aprovação de no mínimo nove dos treze Estados, como Nova Iorque e Virgínia possuíam muito poder, um voto negativo poderia prejudicar sua promulgação. 1. União construída, facção ameaçada No artigo de número 10, Madison destaca a vantagem de uma união bem construída no combate e controle da violência e do facciosismo, sendo facções o conjunto de cidadãos unidos por interesse comum, contrariando direitos de outros cidadãos ou interesses permanentes da sociedade. Um meio de resolver causas de facções seria remover a liberdade, essencial para sua formação, e dar aos cidadãos os mesmos interesses, paixões e opiniões, porém a liberdade é essencial a vida politica, e a liberdade de pensamento refere-se ao direito de propriedade, defendido por este governo. Desta forma, sendo as causas advindas da natureza humana, enquanto o homem possuir liberdade para exercer sua razão, opiniões diferentes existirão, sendo imprudente elimina-las, tornando a solução em apenas controlar efeitos. A fonte mais comum de facção é a distribuição desigual da propriedade, pois os que possuem bens e os que não, formam interesses distintos e a regulação deles é objetivo da legislação moderna. Um indivíduo não pode ser juiz de sua causa, seu interesse influenciaria o julgamento e afetaria sua integridade, portanto a justiça deve agir como balança, porém diferentes visões formaram diferentes partidos, sentimentos e pontos de vista na sociedade gerando a disposição em oprimir invés de cooperar pelo bem comum. Deste modo, os partidos julgam a si mesmos e a tendência é de que a facção mais poderosa prevaleça. Dizer que um estadista esclarecido seria capaz de balancear interesses conflitantes e gera-los ao bem público, não seria de grande utilidade, geralmente um dos interesses prevalece e nem sempre teremos estadistas esclarecidos no poder. Uma paixão ou interesse em comum em uma maioria deve ser evitada ou ao menos ser incapaz de realizar opressão. A república permite á maioria defender seus pontos de vista por meio do voto regular, sacrificando a paixão ou interesse dominante tanto para o bem comum, como para os direitos dos outros cidadãos. Uma democracia pura , não consegue combater a facção, já que sociedades menores 1 geram menor número de partidos e interesses, tornando mais fácil uma maioria se Sociedade com poucos cidadãos que administram o governo em pessoa.

The article elaborates Hannah Arendt's thought on the public realm to analyse the performed 'radio' that women prisoners 'produced' with their voice at the Majdanek concentration camp, Poland, in Spring 1943. The authors reconstruct the rationale that clarifies why an image of a radio was meaningful at a death camp. The documented memories reveal that the 'radio' created a resistant, harm-preventing and despair-relieving space. Mobilizing the meanings Arendt gives to the public realm as the shared reference and shared belonging, the authors show that the memories point towards the prisoners' efforts to break their exclusion by decisively continuing their belonging to the public world through their own performance. In Arendt's concepts, 'broadcasting' and listening to 'programmes' actualized prisoners' being and subjectivity, both of which were under constant assaults. Conceptualized through Arendt's thought, the performed 'radio' reveals amid the extreme exclusion, isolation and cruelty of the death camp how profoundly meaningful the public realm is to humans.

Political Philosophy In the Moment uncovers the political power of narrative by both telling and explaining the stories that frame our ability to be “in the moment.”

In a series of eleven short stories, Jim Josefson presents the history of political philosophy and Hannah Arendt’s alternative, an aesthetic form of politics. In the early stories, Josefson recounts how the four main traditions of political philosophy (Platonism, Aristotelianism, liberalism and historicism) promise truth but deny us the freedom available in reality. Then he reviews the alternative narratives offered by thinkers like Kierkegaard, Nietzsche and Heidegger, which influenced Arendt’s view. The final chapters chart Arendt’s route back to the Moment, the freedom to read and tell a fuller story about the beauty and horrors that appear in the world.

In: MONTESQUIEU, Charles de Secondat, Barão de. Do Espírito das Leis. Rio de Janeiro: Nova Fronteira Participações S.A, 2012. cap. 11, p. 188-224. v.1. Charles-Louis de Secondat, conhecido como Montesquieu, viveu entre 1689 e 1755, e foi um dos grandes escritores do iluminismo francês. Entre suas obras, a de maior destaque é Do Espírito das Leis, que trata, principalmente, da importância da divisão dos três poderes. Nela, o autor defende a sua tese central, que, se resumida simples e grosseiramente, afirma que, em qualquer Estado deve existir três poderes, sendo eles o legislativo, executivo e judiciário, os quais devem agir por conta própria, entretanto, se comunicando harmonicamente e de forma equilibrada.
