On the 1st of December 2023, after the truce for the hostages-for-prisoners swap ended, Israel renewed its offensive in Gaza with a vengeance, a response to the brutal Hamas attack of October 7. This stage of the ground operation coincided with the reading of a specific sermon in synagogues - Vayishlach, a parashah (portion) of Genesis telling the story of the rape of Dinah, and the brutal and disproportionate retaliation exacted by Simeon and Levi. In the following days, some topics in Vayishlach - rape, deception, revenge, massacre, looting and terror - appeared in Israeli mainstream media, in synagogue newsletters, in social media, and in photos and videos uploaded by soldiers in Gaza, often with direct quotes from the Biblical portion. Many of these references view the Biblical story as allowing or providing justification for atrocities; indeed, before the month (December) was over, one such Vayishlach reference had been presented as an Expression of Genocidal Intent in South Africa's Application to the International Court of Justice (ICJ). However, the interpretation that the Biblical story supports genocide does not stand scrutiny once we parse the original text of Vayishlach.

El objetivo de este artículo es analizar cómo las imágenes divulgadas por los medios de comunicación de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires presentaron las intervenciones violentas de las fuerzas de seguridad en el contexto de la pandemia por COVID-19. Para comprender este proceso se revisan un conjunto de casos cubiertos en 2020 por portales de medios gráficos (en versión digital, hegemónicos y alternativos) y de noticieros televisivos de la ciudad de Buenos Aires. El artículo se interroga sobre el sentido de lo violento de las imágenes durante la pandemia, sus legitimaciones y resignificaciones. Algunos resultados revelan que, durante la primera parte de la pandemia, los medios difundieron imágenes de hostigamiento y violencia letal protagonizadas por personal policial mediante el empleo de fuentes ciudadanas (videos tomados por testigos de los hechos) y cámaras de seguridad como modo de denuncia moral y política, de las prácticas policiales. Understanding the relationship between civil-military relations plays a crucial role in the discipline of political science but most importantly it vibrates issue that tackles states and societies in their format and dynamism. In this paper I will try to explain the basic understanding of the civil-military relations with a specific reference to the historical development and possibilities of interaction between the both trajectories of military power as a key player in the case of security and the civil political leadership as a key player that brings development and policies for the state. Afterward, I'll try to explain the political development of Turkey as a country that faced a huge number of Coup D'états in the last two centuries and by doing so, we will enter into a discussion and focusing mostly on the last attempt in 2016. While rethinking the civil-military relations we will try to reveal (f) actors on the Turkish political internal dynamism that factorized once again the military power and initiated action to curb civil society polity.

Military is one of the crucial players in Ottoman-Turkish politics. This thesis aims to examine the soldiers’ perception on politics and society in Turkey. Our arguments is constructred on the discourse which is found in the soldiers’ life-narratives such as memoirs, journals or letters. In that context, a corpus of more than 150 life-narratives which are written by 132 Ottoman/Turkish soldiers (generals, admirals, officers, NCOs and privates) from mid-19th century hitherto is reviewed. In the first chapter, we discussed the literature on civil-military relations and the social and political role of military –in world and in Turkey. Second chapter aims to focus on the self-perception of soldiers in Turkey. The following two chapters attempted to have some insights on military’s perception on politics and society in Turkey respectively.
While reading subject corpus on the context which political science and political history literature provides to us as a background, we also purposed to enrich this literature with latter by injecting a more authentic and human voice owned by the soldiers themselves as individuals.

ÖZ
Asker, Osmanlı-Türk modernleşmesinin önemli aktörlerindendir. Bu tez çalışmasının konusu, kolektif bir aktör olarak Türkiye’de askerlerin siyaset ve toplum algısını tartışmaktır. Bu tartışmayı yürütürken, askerlerin kişisel duygu ve görüşlerini ifade edebilmeleri bakımından görece daha serbest birer mecra olan hatırat, günlük ve defter gibi kaynaklara başvuruldu; bu kapsamda 19. yüzyıl ortalarından bugüne değin çeşitli rütbelerden 132 askerin kaleme aldığı 150’yi aşkın yaşam anlatısı tarandı. Tezin ilk bölümünde bir mesele olarak sivil-asker ilişkileri ve orduların siyasal/toplumsal konumlarına ilişkin edebiyat ile yaşam anlatılarının bu edebiyata sunabileceği katkıların imkânları; izleyen üç bölümde ise Türkiye’de askerlerin sırasıyla kendilerine, Türkiye’nin siyasal hayatına ve topluma dair bakış ve algıları tartışıldı. Bu yol izlenirken, bir yandan siyasi tarih ve siyaset bilimi edebiyatının sunduğu zemin bir fon olarak değerlendirilirken, bir yandan da söz konusu anılar külliyatının sunduğu nispeten daha insanî, canlı ve otantik dokuların bu topoğrafyayı ayrıntılandırması amaçlandı.
