Background: Women with unmet need are those who are sexually active in the reproductive age, but do not use any method of contraception despite they do not want more children. These women are at risk of unwanted pregnancies and abortions that can lead to maternal morbidity and mortality. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence and related factors to unmet need for family planning among reproductive aged women in Khuzestan province, Iran, 2012-2013. Methods: Samples were selected randomly from nine cities in the province. Data was collected using a questionnaire which was completed by interview. A 46 item questionnaire was designed to collect data about unmet need in family planning. Data were analysed using SPSS ver19. Descriptive statistics, Independent t-test, chi-square, and logistic regression tests were utilized for analyzing data. Results: Unmet need was 80 (3.42) for limiting and 288 (9.59) for spacing, The prevalence of unmet need in Khuzestan Province was 13%. The unmet need group had more pregnancies and live children compared to the met need group (P<0.05). The women with her husband with primary education compared to illiterate ones, women with university education compared to illiterate ones, women with good knowledge about contraceptive methods compared to those with poor knowledge, were less likely to have unmet need. Conclusion: The unmet need for family planning in the Khuzestan province is rather high compare to some statistics from other cities as well as in the whole country. Improving awareness about family planning can help women to decide about safer and more reliable contraceptive methods.

Inadequate women's knowledge about consequences of induced abortion can lead to increase illegal unsafe abortion especially in limited access to legal abortion. Among the interventions for improvement the women health programs, educational need assessment is one of the first stages. In order to assessing women's educational needs, knowledge and attitude of new married women about induced abortion examined by knowledge-attitude questionnaire in 2009. Data analyzed by using SPSS 16.0 and relationship between knowledge and attitude about induced abortion and important related variables was assessed. Result of this study showed that limited percent of participants had adequate knowledge about consequences of induced abortion, while most of participants had negative attitude toward induced abortion. Also there was strong relationship between women's agreement about induced abortion, women's knowledge test score and their age of marriage, level of women's education, occupation and value of using contraception. Many of participants expressed their disapproval for induced abortion; and almost of them didn't have the adequate knowledge about complications of unwanted pregnancies and induced abortion. Based on inadequate knowledge about induced abortion consequences in new married women, it seems that effective educational programs are a priority for health policy makers.

This study examines trend and determinants of unmet need for family planning (FP) among currently married women and sexually active unmarried women of reproductive age 15-49 in Nigeria over a period of 10 years (2003-2013). Data from three consecutive Nigeria Demographic and Health Surveys (2003, 2008 and 2013) were analyzed. The results show that the unmet need for FP declined between 2008 and 2013 to a level less comparable with the situation in 2003. The significant determinants of unmet need for FP included age, marital status, education, religion, current work status, decision-making on spending personal earnings, gender of household heads, household wealth status, number of living children (including current pregnancy), rural-urban residence, home visit by FP workers and recent exposure to FP messages via mass media. Objectives: Approximately 48% of all pregnancies in the US are unintentional, unplanned, or mistimed and most unplanned pregnancies result from non-continuous, incorrect use or not using a contraceptive method. Choice of a method should be based on the effectiveness and protection provide against unwanted pregnancy. Aim of this study was determining reasons for choosing the traditional method (withdrawal) as contraception. Materials and Methods: This is a cross-sectional descriptive study. The participants in this study consisted of 387 married women who used withdrawal method. Samples were selected randomly. A questionnaire was used for data collection. Descriptive statistics, Chi square, independent-samples t-test , Pearson test and one-way ANOVA were used for data analysis through SPSS 18. Results: Findings indicated that 121 (31.3%) women chose this method because they were sure that, it has same influences as other contraceptive methods, 114 (29.5%) ones chose it due to fearing of infertility by other contraceptive methods and 64 (16.5%) women said that their husbands are reluctant to use other methods. Conclusion: The results showed that the wrong believes or lack of information cause women to choose this unsafe method. So providing women with necessary information in this field by health care providers can be most effective way for replacing effective methods and preventing unwanted pregnancy.
