Maya Iconography

The paper offers a revision of the current knowledge concerning elderly Maya women, based on Maya and Spanish colonial sources, as well as iconographic artefacts such as vessels, figurines and mural painting. The main objective is to determine whether information derived from the above sources is congruent and whether it coincides with the current notions about these women. Moreover, special attention is paid to certain roles played by the elderly Maya women, which distinguish them from other female members of the community and, at the same time, bring them almost on a par with men.

A partir de las investigaciones arqueológicas y epigráficas efectuadas en El Palmar durante los últimos años, ha quedado de manifiesto su importancia en la región del sur de Campeche como un sitio que estableció vínculos con importantes entidades políticas del mundo maya y cuyos gobernantes comisionaron la construcción de grandes edificaciones y la erección de monumentos esculpidos. En este caso, sobresale la consagración de más de seis decenas de estelas y altares que, en su mayoría, registran fechas de final (k'atuun, 20 años) y mitad (laju'ntuun, 10 años) de período donde los soberanos efectuaron ritos de aspersión. La colocación de los monolitos en las grandes plazas indica que esos eventos fueron llevados a cabo frente a casi toda la población, que compartía experiencias y emociones durante el evento. Estos espectáculos proporcionaban la oportunidad a los asistentes de negociar las relaciones de poder y las identidades. Asimismo, las imágenes y los textos jeroglíficos grabados en los monumentos materializaban las actuaciones teatrales de los gobernantes como modelos culturales para perpetuar los ritos y ceremonias para las futuras generaciones. La escultura monumental de la antigua ciudad maya de Yaxchilán constituye una fuente de estudio importante para conocer la actividad ritual de las esposas reales durante el periodo Clásico Tardío (600-950 d. C.). Los dinteles 23, 24, 25 y 26 colocados en el Edificio 23 registran la actividad ritual del gobernante ˀItzam Kokaaj B’ahlam III (681-742) e ˀIx K’ab’al Xook, y son reconocidos como obras plásticas excepcionales del mundo maya. Este trabajo muestra que un estudio histórico y epigráfico de estos monumentos nos permite ampliar nuestro conocimiento sobre las mujeres mayas y su esfera de agencia durante el siglo VIII.

Sexta versión (septiembre de 2025) del Catálogo y Glosario de la Escritura Jeroglífica Maya elaborado por el arqueólogo William H. Mex Albornoz. El primer apartado de signos reúne en cuadrículas la mayoría de los silabogramas cuya lectura fonética ha sido descifrada.
En el segundo apartado, los signos han sido agrupados (según sus características) en siete grandes grupos: cuerpos humanos y divinos; animales y sus partes; elementos de la naturaleza; plantas y derivados; objetos y artefactos, abstractos y compuestos y días del calendario maya. La segunda parte del manual corresponde al Glosario, el cual ordena la mayoría de las palabras conocidas del idioma maya clásico en orden alfabético, comenzando con a, b, ch y terminando con w, x, y. Este listado sirve para ampliar la traducción de las palabras presentadas en la primera sección y presenta algunas de las diferentes formas posibles de pronunciar una palabra en el idioma de las inscripciones jeroglíficas.

Maya art is a rare combination of linear elegance and naturalism, blended with dazzling symbolic complexity. At the 2004 Palenque Round Table, Erik Velásquez proposed that Maya rulers bearing the Kaanuˀl emblem glyph may have resided in Dzibanche during the Early Classic, as there are no references linking them to Calakmul before A.D. 631. Here we review data on their presence at Dzibanche and other settlements in the region. Arguments of a different nature supporting this scenario were published from 2005 to 2016, including the Xunantunich findings (Helmke and Awe 2016a, 2016b), which allow us to conjecture that a dissident faction of the dynasty separated from Dzibanche and founded an alternative seat in Calakmul in A.D. 635. This produced the scenario that we propose, where, in the Late Classic, there were simultaneous rulers of the Kaanuˀl dynasty in southern Campeche and southern Quintana Roo, since Kaanuˀl rulers continued to reside in Dzibanche at least until the seventh century.

En este texto se analizarán las distintas representaciones de los palanquines en el arte maya, así como su presencia en el registro escriturario del periodo Clásico, donde se asocian con el vocablo piit, ‘litera, palanquín’. En principio, revisaremos el corpus de vasijas del estilo códice, pues observamos que existen diversas imágenes de tronos portátiles en escenas palaciegas que fueron utilizados como vehículos para transportar al soberano a diferentes lugares del señorío, o fuera de sus fronteras, con el fin de supervisar actividades rituales, militares y diplomáticas, entre otras más. De igual forma, se mostrarán sus representaciones en monumentos esculpidos, dinteles de madera y grafitis, que fueron ejecutadas sobre los muros de cuartos abovedados en distintos asentamientos del Área Maya. Posteriormente, discutiremos la estructura y las posibles motivaciones gráficas del logograma PIIT, así como los contextos en los que aparece dentro de las inscripciones jeroglíficas, donde se encuentra vinculado con eventos míticos, militares y de toma de poder por parte de los gobernantes.

This contribution presents new insights into a Late Classic Maya limestone relief panel of unknown provenance, repatriated to Mexico in 2025. The artifact, carved and culturally significant, likely originated in the Puuc region of the northern Maya lowlands and dates to between 600 and 900 CE. After decades in a private collection in Chicago, the fragment was voluntarily returned to Mexico’s Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia (INAH) by the heirs, in collaboration with the National Museum of Mexican Art. Through extensive provenance research and a close study of the unpublished archive of the late Maya scholar Karl Herbert Mayer (1944–2025), the authors reconstruct the object’s post-discovery trajectory and original appearance. Mayer’s personal archive—now housed at the University of Bonn as part of the Text Database and Dictionary of Classic Mayan project—includes a previously overlooked photograph showing the complete panel prior to its division.

En el presente trabajo, se presenta una nueva propuesta de interpretación de las pinturas mayas clásicas de cráneos y esqueletos humanos elaboradas en el interior de cuevas de Yucatán a partir de nuevos datos sobre la cosmovisión de los antiguos mayas, así como información
etnográfica confluyente. Se argumenta la relación de estas pinturas con el fenómeno del nagualismo y se discuten las implicaciones de esta propuesta sobre nuestro entendimiento del papel que jugaban las cuevas mayas no solo en la religión, sino también en la organización política y social.

El presente trabajo está dedicado al estudio del denominado Dibujo 13 de la cueva de Naj Tunich, Guatemala. Se discute tanto la lectura epigráfica de este texto como la información sobre prácticas rituales que proporciona y las implicaciones históricas que traería su contenido sobre nuestros conocimientos de la geopolítica del sureste del Petén
hacia finales de Clásico Tardío.

En el presente trabajo se retoma el problema del significado del título
maya clásico ‘a-na-bi, uno de los más discutidos en la literatura especializada hasta la fecha. A partir de la consideración del total de los casos donde aparece el título (con especial énfasis en las escenas iconográficas que muestran las acciones asociadas con los portadores del título) y con auxilio de datos lingüísticos, se propone que la lectura del título era ‘anab, con el significado de ‘ayudante’.

El presente artículo está dedicado al estudio de las menciones y representaciones del llamado Dios Jaguar del Inframundo, provenientes del sitio arqueológico de Yaxchilán. Se sistematizan y examinan los contextos donde aparece esta divinidad y, a partir de ello, se propone que, en Yaxchilán, el Dios Jaguar del Inframundo habría actuado en calidad del
fuego nuevo, necesario para la refundación de dinastías en situaciones
de crisis.

This is a description of the functioning of the Maya hieroglyphic writing, where several aspects are addressed and explained: the geographical extension of this ancient logosyllabic writing system; its historical and/or chronological limits (from the third century B.C. to the nineteenth century A.D. ); its repertoire of signs (logograms, syllabograms, an iteration sign, a diacritical sign, a punctuation sign, and numerograms [notation signs]); the language recorded in the hieroglyphic texts; the scriptural resources; the reading order; the representation of vowel length; the use of allographs; the rules of underrepresentation; some morphosyntactic resources; the collapse between the glottal aspirated consonants /-h-/ and the velar aspirated -j-; and so on. A syllabary and a list of the most frequent logograms are also included, in addition to which we defend the need for broad transliterations rather than narrow transliterations.

Se trata de una descripción del funcionamiento de la escritura jeroglífica maya, donde se abordan y explican varios aspectos: la extención geográfica de ese antiguo sistema de escritura logosilábico; sus límites históricos y/o cronológicos (del siglo III a.C. al siglo XIX d.C.); su repertorio de signos (logogramas, silabogramas, un signo de iteración, un signo diacrítico, un signo de puntuación y los numerogramas [signos de notación]); la lengua registrada en los textos jeroglíficos; los recursos escriturarios; el orden de lectura; la representación de la longitud vocálica; el uso de alógrafos; las reglas de subrepresentación; algunos recursos morfosintácticos; el colapso entre las consonantes aspirada glotal /-h-/ y la aspirada velar -j-; etcétera. También se incluye un silabario y una lista de los logogramas más frecuentes, además de que defendemos la necesidad de realizar transliteraciones amplias y no transliteraciones estrechas.

The historicist and prospectivist recording of political events in the Classic period (250-950 CE) Maya city-states used to take the form of inscriptions carved in stone, generally referring to royal rites commemorating the end of calendar cycles. The Maya calendric system was an efficient political ressource for rulers and their courts. In what is known as the ‘Maya collapse’ (750-950) which terminated the Classic period and opened the Postclassic period as a wide process of depopulation of interior lowland cities and their late relocation in sea costal regions, the 750-810 CE years appear to have a special status. Those first decades witnessed an acceleration of warfare and dynastic ends, reflecting destruction, yet with cities still largely populated, suggesting transformation. The analysis concentrates on the change which then took place in some aspects of ritual practices and discourses (calendar notation, contents referring to warfare,
material supports, associated images, public architecture), pointing to the emergence of new temporalities in political action to be correlated with those known for the Postclassic period, and beyond, through alphabetic texts and ethnography.

A Mexikó déli vidékein és az azzal szomszédos országokban fennállott maja civilizáció egyedülálló sajátossága volt a napra pontos időszámítás és a maja írás, melynek megfejtése másfél évszázada kezdődött és ma sem zárult le. Ebbe az intellektuális kalandba kapcsolódott be Bíró Péter, máig szinte egyetlen magyar kutatóként.

La concepción maya del inframundo ha sido objeto de estudio por parte de diversos investigadores, quienes han empleado las fuentes prehispánicas y coloniales disponibles para discutirlas, analizarlas e interpretarlas a la luz de los recientes estudios arqueológicos y epigráficos. En este artículo se retoman algunas propuestas derivadas de los estudios de la imagen y la iconografía regional maya, con la intención de analizar el arte rupestre de una cueva en la región del Puuc, conocida como Usil. El análisis de las imágenes rupestres pretende ofrecer posibles interpretaciones que enriquezcan las discusiones generales sobre las cuevas en la tradición maya y sus vínculos con el inframundo.

At about the time of Christ, a small village was founded to the northwest of the Yucatán, which over the next four centuries became a military power ruling much of central Mexico and indirectly though puppet governments as far south as Guatemala. Although they discovered it as a ruin, the Aztecs named it Teotihuacan, "the place where the gods were born." At its height Teotihuacan had a population about 125,000. The city had three large pyramids.

The Maya tracked the positions of the stars and planets more than 1,000 years before Galileo. The Maya are considered “one of the ancient world’s most advanced societies.” It flourished between 250 C.E. and 900 C.E. as a number of city-states in southern Mexico, Guatemala, and Honduras. They had a system of writing that records the emergence of a divine king named Pakal, who ruled for 66 years. His capital city of Palenque was located in Chiapas, Mexico. It was surrounded by fields of maize. The Maya were divided into a number of city-states. The city-state of Sian Kaan (Calakmul today) contains the largest of all Mayan ruins. It once had a population of about 575,000 people spread over 25 square miles. Consisting of temples, palaces, villas, granaries, and two central pyramids surrounded by an eighteenth-foot wall,

Tenochtitlan was the capital of the Triple Alliance (as the Aztec Empire was known). The Mexica were the dominant partner in the Alliance, and Tenochtitlan was the empire’s biggest city. The city was accessible only by three causeways with bridges that could be raised in the case of an attack. The Aztecs also made alliances with Tacuba and Texcoco, who cities on the west and sides of the lake. Their language was Nahuatl, which was an oral language. Their only writing was by pictographs.

In 1614 Diego Velázquez, the Spanish governor of Cuba, sent three of his friends to explore what was located beyond the west end of the island. One of them, Hernández de Córdoba left Santiago in February 1517 with three ships. After six days, they reached an island, which was probably the Isla de Mujeres off the coast of the Yucatan. Córdoba managed to return to Santiago, where he died from his wounds. Velázquez then sent another friend named Gonzalo de Guzmán to Spain to ask for a special concession to benefit him from any new discoveries. The expedition continued along the Mexican coast, reaching an island a short distance from the coast at Veracruz in June. They went ashore, where they found two stone temples of pyramids and evidence of human sacrifice. The people here were Totonacs, who had migrated from the mountains to the coast around the beginning of the Christian Era.  The produced vanilla, which was used to flavor chocolate.

Hernán Cortés was born in 1484 in Medellín, Estremadura Province, Spain. His father was a soldier and hidalgo, or minor nobleman. His mother was a Pizarro, who was a second cousin once removed to Francisco Pizarro, the conqueror of Peru. Her father was a notary for the king. Hernán left Medellín in his teens to go to Salamanca to study Latin and grammar in preparation for the law. But rather than becoming a lawyer, he decided to go to the Americas. In 1504 he sailed to Santo Domingo (the Dominican Republic today), and in 1511 moved to Cuba, where he assisted Diego Velázquez to conquer the island. As governor of Cuba, Velázquez in 1518 made Cortés a commander of an expedition to Mexico, but he became distrustful of Cortés’ motives and cancelled the commission. Cortés ignored Velázquez and sailed to Mexico anyway, where he established a settlement at what is now Veracruz. He made allies of the local people and moved inland toward the Aztec capital of Tenochtitlán. After a three-month journey, Cortés reached Tenochtitlá, where he was welcomed by Montezuma as a fulfillment of prophesy of a white-skinned god (Quetzalcoatl) arriving from the east. But Montezuma soon realized that Cortés was only interested in gold and converting the Aztecs to Christianity, and Cortés took Montezuma as a hostage.

One of the greatest achievements of the Ancient Maya was a logo-syllabic writing system. The Maya left many glyphic inscriptions carved, incised or painted on different media. Unfortunately, from that rich scribal tradition only four manuscripts, known as codices, survived. They are painted on bark paper and contain, above all, almanacs with auguries. However, by looking at reports prepared by chroniclers during Colonial times, and documents transcribed in Mayan languages using the Latin alphabet, one can see that a variety of subjects could have been raised in lost codices.

Maya monuments from the Classic period (ad 250-900) represent portraits of kings and queens wearing ornamented garments, with jadeite jewels and headdresses composed of numerous elements. Yet, with increasing familiarity with Maya writing and taking a closer look, we also find a very interesting feature of Maya headdresses: hieroglyphs spelling out personal names. This is an iconographic motif already observed by Herbert Spinden in 1913, and later discussed by other scholars, such as David Kelley, Tatiana Proskouriakoff and Linda Schele. Thereby glyphic names are integrated into a visual narrative. Although in most cases the names identify exactly the persons portrayed, examples also exist of headdresses composed of elements that spell out the names of certain venerated ancestors or mythical entities.

Cenotes, aquatic sinkholes within a karstic landscape, were access points to water during the apogee of the Maya civilization. They also acted as ritual landscapes, as spaces of interaction that were not fully submerged but not fully terrestrial. Significant evidence relates that a consistent water supply dictated the function of Maya social, ritual, spiritual, and political world. Through water, these otherwise separate facets of Maya society blended; this paper will focus on the breach of liminal spaces and the agents that made it possible. Liminality, within the conceptualisation of the maritime cultural landscape (MCL) (Westerdahl 2003), is the transitional cusp of sea and land: one where liminal agents travel between these two worlds, with the ability to transport a person to another through contact. The application of this maritime theory to Maya cenotes is distinct; here, liminal agents bring into view the ritual and spiritual 'hydro' culture in a terrestrial setting. By redefining this relational ontology for the Maya surrounding cenotes, which will be shown to be a fully sensory and animate experience, the richness of their social, ritual, and political landscape comes alive. Case studies across several Maya settlements are presented to indicate consistent animate symbols-the jaguar, water serpents, and water lilies-as liminal agents that pervaded the social and political Maya world.

Antes de que habitáramos este territorio, miles de años atrás; se levantaron ciudades de piedra ocupadas por los mayas; una de las civilizaciones que más ha intrigado a los estudiosos. Bajo nuestros pies, yacen increíbles tesoros que, van aflorando conforme la mancha urbana gana espacios a la selva. Durante los trabajos de construcción en las inmediaciones de una antigua zona gasera, situada sobre la avenida Álvaro Obregón de la ciudad de Chetumal, Quintana Roo; un albañil encontró una efigie antropomorfa maya de cerámica con decoración incisa y bajo relieve, representando a Yum Kaax o señor joven del maíz, a decir por su aspecto jovial, tocado con dos hojas lanceoladas a los lados, cetro en forma de hacha y el glifo de cruz recurrente en orejeras y en la parte central del collar; además de la decoración facial escarificada. Cerca de ahí, algunos años atrás, se construía el proyecto de una Central de Abastos, en aquél entonces, se encontraron alrededor de 10 plataformas de piedra, sobre las cuales alguna vez se edificaron las chozas donde vivían familias mayas de clase baja, quienes se dedicaban a la agricultura; también encontraron tiestos, una punta de lanza y otros utensilios. Dicho asentamiento data del posclásico tardío (1250-1500 d.C.) según las investigaciones de Brasdefer y Garduño, arqueólogos del INAH en Quintana Roo. A doscientos metros del CBTIS en Chetumal, se localizó un entierro de campesinos mayas prehispánicos datado hacia el posclásico tardío, sitio nombrado como Lakin Ha por los investigadores . En el faro que se encuentra frente a la bahía se encontró en un entierro, el plato de Ch'ak Ch'ok Kelem (príncipe maya) perteneciente al clásico tardío (600-800 d. Es probable que esta efigie de Yum Kaax pertenezca al posclásico tardío, periodo que coincide con la aparición de los dioses en la religión maya, entonces ya no se trata únicamente de la representación del maíz sino del señor del maíz.

Proposal of a previously undocumented Classic Maya warfare expression, chuw-k’ahk’-aj (“fire-burned”), based on a passage from Itzan, Stela 17, that also parallels on El Peru, Hierogylphic Stairway, where the same expression is rendered chu-wi-K'AK'-ja and thus with wi and wu having a good arguments that reading for the syllable /wu/ seems to be correct. The expression describe in that note may describe a ritual or military act involving fire, potentially tied to lunar timing, and includes the glyph sequence [chu-wu?] K’AHK’-ja. This supports Yuri Polyukhovich’s (unpublished) 2010 decipherment of the syllable wu. As a response David Stuart and Stephen Houston acknowledge long-standing discussions of the possible wu/hu reading dating back to the 1990s. Both agree the reading of this warfare expression is plausible but note ambiguities in the glyph forms, including possible misdrawings and sign variants. A possible parallel is mentioned on a block from El Peru, though image quality and clarity remain issues (emails by S. Houston and D. Stuart, 2021).

Resumen Superadas las crisis sociales y políticas que tuvieron lugar en las décadas finales del período Preclásico, nuevas entidades comienzan a emerger en el panorama geopolítico de las tierras bajas mayas. En el caso del Petén campechano, el descubrimiento de sitios arqueológicos con vestigios de estructuras defensivas y monumentos pétreos permite inferir la configuración de una nueva realidad en la que entidades como Oxpemul parecen comenzar a despuntar. En este sitio destacan dos monumentos que preservan registro iconográfico de cautivos, las Estelas 22 y 23; estas exhiben patrones iconográficos típicos del Clásico temprano, entre los que destacan tres figuras desnudas e hincadas. Con la toma de nuevas fotografías diurnas y nocturnas de las estelas y la utilización de la herramienta computacional Reflectance Transformation Imaging, se presentan nuevas interpretaciones de los monumentos de Oxpemul; además, a través de los nuevos análisis iconográficos se proponen nuevas consideraciones sobre las dinámicas sociopolíticas regionales durante los contextos tempranos en los que Oxpemul parece jugar un papel destacable.

El presente trabajo tiene como propósito analizar los rituales de petición de lluvias en Oxchuc, una comunidad tseltal de los Altos de Chiapas. El interés surge debido a que se trata de una práctica de raigambre mesoamericana milenaria y sobre la cual hay varios fenómenos que la ponen en riesgo: cambio climático, religiones protestantes, cambio de actividades económicas, conflictos por el territorio, entre otros (consideramos los enlistados como los más importantes, aunque existen más pero no tienen tanto peso como los ya mencionadas). También creemos que estas prácticas deben ser documentadas porque nos pueden dar respuestas ante el cambio climático, pues éste ha traído consigo graves afectaciones al planeta, que han ocasionado sequías y altas temperaturas. Estas fluctuaciones de la temperatura, junto con el crecimiento poblacional extremo en pequeñas porciones de tierra, han producido un estrés hídrico que ha llegado a afectar a distintas partes del globo terráqueo, incluido México. En ese sentido, comprender estos rituales puede llevarnos a encontrar respuestas que nos permitan cuidar el entorno natural donde vivimos, así como entender y respetar la identidad, la lengua y la cosmovisión de las comunidades indígenas.

This study examines the weaponry and tactical organization of the Late Classic Maya, focusing on lithic and sculptural evidence from the Usumacinta and Pasión regions, especially in the author´s analysis of Yaxchilan lithics. Through functional typology analysis of projectile points and artistic representations, three distinct weapon systems are identified: heavy infantry (long spears for cutting/tearing), light infantry (medium spears for piercing), and atlatl (dart-throwers). These systems correlate with specialized armor and shields, suggesting hierarchical military organization. The article also explores the symbolic role of the god K (associated with war and lightning) and his representation in ceremonial axes (Cetro Maniquí), implying a stratified command structure. By integrating archaeological and iconographic data, the work challenges earlier views of undifferentiated Maya warfare, proposing instead a complex, regimented combat system with tactical formations and ritual significance.

This study documents the Jaguar God of the Underworld (JGU) as a fundamental entity within Late Classic Maya iconography and hieroglyphic writing. Initially designated as GIII within the Palenque Triad, subsequent discoveries across the broader Maya lowlands—often independent of the Triad—necessitated its reclassification as JGU.  Furthermore, the JGU assumes a significant role as one of the so-called "Paddler Gods," first identified in the incised bones of Tikal Burial 116 and subsequently documented in stelae from sites such as Copán, Jimbal, and Ixlu. The deity’s representation extends into hieroglyphic contexts, where it is associated with calendrical and numerical functions, notably embodying the values of seven (Wuk) and seventeen (Wuklajuun), and serving as the lunar regent (Glyph C of the Lunar Series) and patron of specific days such as Wo and Kib. This report, a 2025 update of Hellmuth (2024), is complemented by a substantial corpus of high-resolution photographic and illustrative material, thereby providing an invaluable resource for the detailed study of the JGU's multifaceted roles in Maya religion, iconography, and epigraphy.

Durante la temporada de campo del año 2016, el Proyecto Atlas Epigráfico de Petén, en su cuarta fase y bajo el Convenio de Investigación Arqueológica Número DGPCYN-20-2016, del Ministerio de Cultura y Deportes, nuevamente tuvo acceso a la bodega y a la sala de exposición permanente del Museo Nacional de Arqueología y Etnología (MUNAE). Esto con el objetivo de documentar las inscripciones jeroglíficas en textos de cerámica, objetos de plástica menor y monumentos, con el fin de seguir enriqueciendo el Corpus de Textos Jeroglíficos Mayas leídos. Sin duda el acervo del MUNAE, representa la mayor muestra de objetos prehispánicos en Guatemala, debido a que la mayoría de proyectos arqueológicos entregan al museo los hallazgos realizados en cada temporada de campo. El presente informe pretende analizar de forma sistemática los textos jeroglíficos mayas, escritos en los objetos portátiles y monumentos contenidos dentro de la colección del MUNAE, donde se encuentra un sinfín de objetos importantes para el estudio de la cultura maya, de los cuales pocos han sido publicados. El trabajo que se realizó durante esta temporada, así como en el 2015, fue el documentar por medio de fotografías cada una de las piezas, usando luz de diferente intensidad y diferentes ángulos para captar una mejor imagen del texto y así poder documentar de la mejor manera posible cada objeto, para posteriormente analizar el texto y así realizar los dibujos lineales.

This paper presents a re-translation of an obscure passage from an account of the creation of the world in the Chilam Balam of Chumayel. In the light of two previously proposed interpretations, the meanings of the constituent words and phrases of the passage are analyzed in order to substantiate a slightly different translation. A possible paraphrase of the new translation is then shown to parallel a long reckoning in the text recorded on Step VII of the Hieroglyphic Stairs of Structure 33 at Yaxchilan. The parallelism renders the new translation more accurate since it documents the survival of Classic Maya beliefs in Colonial texts.
