L’articolo considera l’influsso del ‘manuale’ di predicazione di Paolo Gualdo, uno dei protagonisti del dibattito sull’ars concionandi fra Cinque e Seicento, sul gesuita Luigi Valmarana, gesuita e poeta vicentino, mosso dapprima dal desiderio di andare missionario alle «Indie», poi dedicatosi alla realtà della predicazione tra Emilia e Veneto nel primo Seicento. The Casket Sonnets, allegedly written by Mary Queen of Scots, were used by Marian detractors to justify her deposition and imprisonment on the grounds of her adultery and purported murder of her second husband, Lord Darnley. Their public presentation alongside George Buchanan's diatribe against Mary in the 1571 edition of Ane Detectioun…of Marie Quene of Scottes sealed their meaning as expressions of an inordinate female passion. These readings remain unchallenged in literary analysis of the sonnets, as Sarah Dunnigan notes in Eros and Poetry (2002): 'possibilities of interpretations other than the one in which contemporaries encased them is rarely explored.' In Seuils (1987) (published in English as Paratexts [1997]) Gerard Genette explores how authors and publishers use the material surrounding a text as a way of influencing its reception. Genette is distinct in describing paratexts as a threshold rather than a sealed border; a point of entry which offers possibilities of meaning to a literary text and reader. Yet, in the Casket Sonnets their paratextual material has instead imposed a boundary on meaning: one inflicted without the consent of their apparent author. This paper utilises Genette's work to explore the potential for alternative readings of the Casket Sonnets when removed from their unauthorised prefatory material and presentation. By reading the sonnets out of sequence and alongside works of other contemporary female writers in Scotland, such as Elizabeth Melville, I analyse several of the poems as displaying religious themes, questioning studies which frame the sonnets only in terms of feminine secular lyrics, yet do not acknowledge their explicitly anti-Marian, anti-feminist publication.

Review Stručni rad / Pregledni rad U prvom dijelu prikaza razmotrene su fi zičko-zemljopisne značajke suvremenih brodogradilišta s naglaskom na njihovim dispozicijama, površinama teritorija i akvatorija, te građevnim mjestima. U drugom dijelu prikaza opisane su strukture vodećih svjetskih brodogradilišta trgovačkih brodova s posebnim naglascima na dalekoistočne ''tvornice brodova'' i suvremena europska montažna brodogradilišta. U trećem je dijelu sažet pregled fi nancijskih pokazatelja poslovanja uspješnih brodogradilišta. U četvrtom je dijelu obrazložena važnost strukture radne snage za uspješnost brodogradilišta. U zadnjem dijelu pregleda rekapitulirane su tehnološke značajke suvremene brodograđevne proizvodnje. Na koncu pregled potvrđuje da je brodogradnja globalno dobro utemeljena gospodarska djelatnost.

By analyzing travel accounts, theological debates, and legal documents, the essay demonstrates how the term Papismo functioned as both a tool of religious differentiation and a mechanism for reinforcing Protestant identity. Ultimately, it argues that this label played a crucial role in constructing an enduring opposition between British Protestantism and Roman Catholicism, a dynamic that persisted well into the modern era.

Through this study, we explore the sophisticated adaptation of emblems, particularly emphasizing the portrayal of a lion rampant adorned with a crown—a potential nod to the persecuted MacGregor clan during a violent period of systemic erasure. By analyzing the interplay of decorative elements such as beehives and ornate patterns, this work argues that the painted ceiling serves not only as a visual delight but also as a coded commentary on identity, loyalty, and resistance amid the political turmoil of 17th-century Scotland.

When the king 'discharged' Robert Brucethe principal minister of the Presbyterian church in Edinburgh and the man who called James 'God's silly fool' of his stipend -Bruce sued and recovered it before the lords of the session, in the king's presence. The president Alexander Seton, with great dignity and firmness, informed the King that he was their king and they his subjects bound to obey him in all humility which they all would do in all things for their lives, lands and gear but in that matter of law and conscience being sworn to do justice they would do as their consciences led them unless he commanded them to the contrary in which case he said he would not vote at all." Lord Newbottle said to the king that it was said in the town to his slander and theirs that they durst not do justice but as the king commanded them. The judges, with only two dissentient voices, pronounced their decision in favour of Mr. Robert Bruce. 2 Scottish ideas of justice, however, varied from the English and often from French to the frustration of monarchs who sought justice for attacks on their subjects. When Sir Robert Kerr was accused for an attack in 1597 those involved were allowed to go free when they had 'satisfied' the wife and children for the death and also 'satisfied' the king. 3

This article presents the results of an analysis performed in order to determine the feasibility of integrating the generation of wind power plants into the electric power system of the Republic of Croatia and their connection to the existing transmission network, for the purpose of providing a basis for the HEP Transmission System Operator (HEP Operator prijenosnog sustava d.o.o.) to establish the upper limits for the construction of wind power plants of 360 MW, which the system is currently capable of integrating.

In this erudite and fascinating study, Stefania Tutino breaks open the contemporary hermeneutical and epistemological anxieties over the power of language to communicate truth both human and divine. The seeds of this anxiety, Tutino implies, are embedded in human nature itself and in the origins of language. But Steven Toulmin raised the stakes by convincingly arguing in his Cosmopolis (1990)-as Susan Schreiner astutely renders him: "The story of modernity as an 'onward march of human rationality,' is distorted since it 'hides ambiguities and confusions'" (Are You Alone Wise? The Search for Certainty in the Early Modern Era [New York: Oxford University, 2011], 7). Tutino dedicates her study to her hometown of Divieto, Sicily, where, she says, "We told stor[ies] per passarci il tempo," a Sicilian turn of phrase that means not only to pass the time but also to surpass it. In other words, telling stories was a way to discover in the ambiguity, confusions, and ineffableness of human living a truth that "saves" or validates humanity's power to know transcendent realities. Not long after, Mary Stuart, the daughter of a French princess, and the heir-apparent to the Scottish throne ascended to the French throne upon marrying the young Dauphin.2 Now, it seemed, the fate of two key players, England and Scotland, lay in the hands of queens. The fate of these women's monarchies rested not only on how they presented themselves as formidable rulers, but on the reign of the other, as well. Both brought significant strengths to the table, as well as some detrimental weaknesses. The outcome of their reigns would be determined by whether or not the effectiveness of their ruling styles challenged the very nature of the misogynistic society over which they governed. In the end, only one queen, Elizabeth I, would remain standing, showing that her style of rule clearly outweighed that of Mary's.

This paper explores King James I's Basilikon Doron as a complex treatise on monarchy that intertwines governance, religious duty, and the doctrine of divine right. Initially intended as a private guide for his son, Prince Henry, the text reveals James's understanding of kingship and the moral obligations associated with sovereign power. Through a careful analysis of the work's structure and themes, the paper examines how James's assertions of divine authority complicate the notion of accountability while simultaneously inviting potential dissent against tyrannical rule. Ultimately, Basilikon Doron serves as both a personal reflection and a significant political document, influencing the tumultuous relationship between the monarchy and Parliament that would culminate in conflict during the reign of Charles I.

Ombre Parlanti critiques the politics of European rulers—such as Louis XIV of France, Leopold I of the Holy Roman Empire, and Charles II of England—through imagined dialogues, primarily with their deceased predecessors. These spectral encounters serve to admonish the living rulers for their political failures, ranging from neglecting alliances to allowing religious corruption and Ottoman expansion. The article highlights the treatise's Baroque theatricality and its role as a political satire, which circulated widely in both print and manuscript form, even after its inclusion in the Index of Forbidden Books in 1672. Villani emphasizes the text's lack of originality, noting its reliance on erudite but disorganized references to ancient history and moralistic critiques of Machiavellianism. Despite this, Ombre Parlanti found a considerable audience, reflecting the demand for politically charged literature in 17th-century Italy.

Jennifer Vaught presents a fmely-researched study of masculinity and emotion in early modern England, one that she places in context of current critical debates while clarifying particular areas that she builds on and expands. Whereas previous studies have focused on grief or ways in which excessive mourning reinforces reductive views of female identity (i.e., women as "leaky vessels"), Vaught con- centrates on a variety of powerful male emotions (sadness, despair, joy) that correlate with a shift in values from a warrior culture to a culture that encourages virtue through feeling and inrellectual enhancement, the self-fashioning of the courtier as well the man of sensibility. Vaught identifies her study as a feminist project whereby representations of men from different professions, social classes, and literary genres disrupt the stereotypical notions that equate excessive emotion,particularly the "shedding of tears," with female weakness while equating stoical fortitude with men.

Danas se sve vise razmislja o uvođenju elektricne propulzije, zbog dobrih manevarskih sposobnosti, povecanja korisnog brodskog prostora, tihog, mirnog rada i visoke raspoloživosti. Poceci primjene elektricnog pogona na brodovima datiraju jos od 1838. god, kada je njemacki fizicar Moritz von Jacobi predstavio prvo plovilo na elektricni pogon. Poput mnogih drugih izuma i elektricna propulzija je svoju primjenu najprije nasla u vojnoj industriji koja je do kraja 19. stoljeca izgradila veliki broj podmornica s potpuno elektricnom propulzijom napajanom iz akumulatorskih baterija. Court masques were multi-media entertainments, with song, dance, theatre, and changeable scenery, staged annually at the English court to celebrate the Stuart dynasty. They have typically been regarded as frivolous and expensive events. This book dispels this notion, emphasizing instead that they were embedded in the politics of the moment, and spoke in complex ways to the different audiences who viewed them. Covering the whole period from Queen Anne's first masque at Winchester in 1603 to Salmacida Spolia in 1640, Butler looks in depth at the political functions of state festivity. The book contextualizes masque performances in intricate detail, and analyzes how they shaped, managed, and influenced the public face of the Stuart kingship. Butler presents the masques as a vehicle through which we can read the early Stuart court's political aspirations and the changing functions of royal culture in a period of often radical instability.

In the recently deciphered letters from Mary Queen of Scots, a large number of systematic encryption errors were found and attributed to confusion as a result of concurrently using at least one other cipher key to communicate with a different recipient. In this paper, we further analyze such cross-cipher errors in those letters and identify additional cipher keys involved. This analysis also reveals valuable insights on the secret communications of Mary, Queen of Scots. We employ several techniques including statistical analysis, which may be applied to the analysis of encryption errors in other collections of historical enciphered documents.

Many people who are unfamiliar with Baconian research seem to believe that the Baconian evidence for Francis Bacon writing the Shakespeare works is all based on various cipher and code evidence of differing and various complexities. Nothing could be further from the truth.
Here are six pieces of documentary evidence that are not based on ciphers, codes or anagrams and everything to do with hard, primary documentary evidence that firmly links Francis Bacon to the Shakespeare Works.

• Three days of in-person activities and presentation sessions-plus one virtual session-during the "Regular Conference" (January 26-28, 2023), open to all attendees. All synchronous virtual sessions will be held via Zoom. Od prvog skupa ''Organizacija održavanja u novim uvjetima'' održanog 20. travnja 1990. na Elektrotehničkom fakultetu Osijek održano je još 29 skupova u jedanaest različitih gradova Slavonije i Baranje. Between the summer of 1547 and the summer of 1550-during the Anglo-Scottish war known today as the Rough Wooing-an altogether unprecedented British vision emerged. At the same time an equally unprecedented critique of it also appeared. Both informed Anglophone political thought into the next century, and, arguably, into the age of the democratic revolutions. Raspoloživost propulzijskoga dizelskog motora u pogledu snage ili bilo koje druge znacajke, pri raznim eksploatacijskim uvjetima utvrđuje se proracunima, a potvrđuje empirijskim metodama. Racunalno-simulacijski modeli veoma su važni za takve analize. Racunalno-simulacijski model brodskoga propulzijskog dizelskog motora osnovan na matematickom modelu, prikazan je u ovom radu [1]. Model je upotrijebljen za analizu stacionarnih i dinamickih uvjeta rada sporohodnoga propulzijskog dizelskog motora s prednabijanjem i brodskoga vijcanog propulzora s nepomicnim krilima. Model je izrađen uz uporabu racunalne aplikacije MATLAB 7.0.4.- SIMULINK, na osnovi detaljnoga matematickog nultodimenzionalnog modela. U ovome radu navedeni model je poslužio za rasclambu utjecaja promjene snage u pojedinim cilindrima na radne znacajke motora. In the last decades of Elizabeth I’s reign (1558-1603), the tension between Catholics and members of the newly founded Church of England escalated. This fostered the development of distinctive strategies for the expression of dissent which stemmed from a political climate dominated by eschatological and demonic references. The present article takes its cue from a recent essay by Rita Maria Comanducci on a Devil’s letter addressed to the English sovereign and analyses an inedited copy of this epistle that the author found in a German manuscript. Through the omparison of several passages and the edition of both texts in the appendix, the paper intends to demonstrate that the two letters are separate versions of the same text, drafted twenty years apart in a profoundly different political climate. The version in the German
manuscript is more extensive and is harsher on Elizabeth I, whose religious policy the anonymous author openly criticises with a possible reference to the execution of Mary Stuart in 1587. The present contribution also intends to contextualise this Devil’s letter within the literary climate of the time and addresses the reasons for the choice of this medium by means of a diachronic analysis which recalls the medieval antecedents of politically-engaged fictitious epistolography.

Introduzione L'idea di scrivere una tesi sulla riforma anglicana nacque un paio di anni fa, dopo aver letto il romanzo La colonna di fuoco, di Ken Follett. La storia vede un gruppo di personaggi fittizi, di diversa estrazione sociale, compiere le proprie avventure, che più volte vanno ad intrecciarsi, tra Inghilterra, Spagna, Francia e le colonie latinoamericane della seconda metà del XVI secolo, quando l'Europa era stata sconvolta dalla riforma protestante. Le vicende li portano ad interagire con personaggi storicamente esistiti, come le regine Elisabetta I d'Inghilterra e Maria Stuart di Scozia, ma anche figure secondarie come ambasciatori e sicari al soldo dei re. Da questa lettura mi sono appassionato al periodo storico, ricco di intrighi e personaggi enigmatici, che, seppure rappresentati attraverso il velo di un'opera fittizia, mantengono quelle caratteristiche che hanno reso celebri le loro controparti reali. L'estrema determinazione della Stuarda in un periodo in cui le regine venivano viste come qualcosa di inusuale e per questo soggette alle maldicenze del popolo, o l'abilità da condottiero di Francesco, duca di Guisa, sono esempi perfetti. La passione per questo tema spazia in un'area geografica molto vasta, motivo per il quale ho dovuto restringere il campo di analisi, selezionando, infine, le isole britanniche come scenario principale. L'obiettivo alla base di questa tesi è di dare un'idea della situazione, in un periodo in cui l'Europa era scossa dalla frattura nella fede cristiana e dall'arrivo delle nuove correnti religiose. Il cambiamento verrà analizzato attraverso forze favorevoli e Nel primo capitolo parlo della riforma dai primi re Tudor fino a Maria "La Sanguinaria". Nella seconda parte lascio, per il momento, l'analisi storica attraverso il compiuto dei personaggi, prendendo come protagonista di questo capitolo l'età elisabettiana in tutte le sue sfumature: dalla teologia, passando per l'evoluzione della lingua e del teatro fino ad arrivare alla potenza marittima inglese, che viene ad affermarsi in questo periodo. Il terzo capitolo analizza Maria Stuart dal punto di vista di una regina che, se da una parte fu vittima degli eventi e della sorte che la vollero come sovrana in un mondo dominato da uomini, seppe farsi spazio all'interno di questa morsa che lentamente la strinse fino a divorarla. Il capitolo serve anche a preparare il lettore alla fase finale, dove la sovrana di Scozia viene analizzata attraverso la cultura di massa. Qui sono riuscito a trovare le tragedie di Vittorio Alfieri e Friedrich Von Schiller, del XVIII secolo, opere che rappresentano la protagonista secondo criteri opposti. Recuperato lo scritto di Federico della Valle, drammaturgo dell'Italia del Seicento, mi sono affidato, nell'analisi, a riviste storiche online e l'enciclopedia Treccani, dove mi sono imbattuto in diversi commenti sull'opera riuscendo ad estrapolare quegli elementi che riflettono il periodo in cui visse l'autore. Il secondo paragrafo del quarto capitolo vede sempre Maria Stuart come protagonista, ma stavolta all'interno di opere cinematografiche. Qui sono partito dalla pellicola di John Ford del 1936, per passare all'ultimo film, uscito alla fine del 2018, in modo da poter analizzare il cambiamento nell'immaginario popolare su Maria attraverso i due punti estremi di questa sfera della cultura di massa. Infine, ho preso come riferimento anche un film su Elisabetta, del decennio scorso, per vedere come veniva rappresentata la Stuarda dal punto di vista della sua storica rivale.
