Literary experience

This paper wishes to be a contribution to the current debate about the role of literature in the context of the so-called 'crisis of the humanities'. by taking into account alain Finkelkraut's concept of "intelligent heart" and confronting it with steiner's and todorov's views of literature and literary studies, a specific notion of literary experience is here proposed, as a way of freeing the literary phenomenon from the structuralist enclosure and opening it up to new possibilities of incidence in the world.

I argue for the need to understand interpretation as the chief social good of literary studies; discussing the concerns of postcritique, I suggest that any focus on literary experience must be on socioaesthetic experience; and I suggest the need to think through our sense of what literary studies does to reflect on how it must change, if it must change.

O presente artigo se propõe questionar sobre o espaço político aberto pela leitura literária. Especificando a literatura como uma tentativa de compreensão de problemas relacionados à existência, sublinhamos como a leitura literária coloca em questão nossas convicções e verdades defendidas cotidianamente. Para tanto, compreendemos as relações tecidas entre a linguagem, o poder e a resistência no seio da experiência literária. Concluímos que a leitura literária é atravessada por formas de resistência às palavras de ordem que circulam de forma hegemônica em nossa sociedade, disponibilizando assim uma transformação em nossa rede afetiva e cognitiva.

Resumo O artigo busca desenvolver a noção de obliquação e entender por que a experiência literária parece ser o seu lugar privilegiado, por meio de um movimento duplo, mas conjugado. Em primeiro lugar, trata-se de pensar, através de uma leitura transversal da teoria da enunciação, a obliquação como condição fundamental da reflexividade - que seria, para fazer uso de um jogo de palavras, um reflexo à obliquação. Assim, se em seu curso sobre A hermenêutica do sujeito, Foucault se propunha realizar “uma analítica das formas da reflexividade, na medida em que são elas que constituem o sujeito como tal”, a nosso ver, tal exercício ainda precisa ser complementado por uma ontologia dos modos de obliquação, entre os quais está a experiência literária aqui analisada. The present research paper seeks to ascertain whether students respond emotionally to literatureas it is argued that the emotions experienced during reading help interpret literary texts. To that end, the study departs from an investigation of students' personal responses only to determine whether emotion-based responses exist in the EFL context, thus answering the central question that guides this work: do affective responses to literature exist? The stakeholders involved in this study are master-one, EFL students who specialize in literature and civilization at the University of Oran 2, in Algeria. These students were asked to answer a mixed-methods questionnaire. Of the 61 students concerned with the study, thirty-one have answered. The analysis of the ensuing data showed that affective responses to literature are quasi-nonexistent, thus the urgent need to reassess the current literature teaching approaches.

RESUMO
O presente artigo parte do célebre diagnóstico do fim da história-tese defendida por Francis Fukuyama logo após a queda do muro de Berlim. Inspirado em autores como Michel Foucault, Gilles Deleuze e Giorgio Agamben, situa-se sob o viés o qual defende que a maquinaria do capital-muito mais do que um sistema econômico-é produtora de subjetividade: em tramas de saber e poder operadas por dispositivos, dobra vidas a fim de construir modos de existência de modo cada vez mais minucioso e cotidiano. O que se insinua, pois, é a tese de Walter Benjamin: o capitalismo como religião-fabricando existências ininterruptamente a partir da disseminação incessante de dispositivos. O que se anunciaria no presente, pois, seria uma geração funcionária do fim da história-aquela que viveria fazendo acontecer aquilo que certa feita Italo Calvino chamou de inferno. A partir de tal diagnóstico, sob inspiração em Maurice Blanchot e Roberto Bolaño, a aposta é de que o que se opera em uma experiência literária pode fazer fraquejar as tramas dispositivas já prontas de um suposto fim da história-e seria justamente essa a tarefa política que faz vicejar a potência da arte: fazer valer o inacabamento do mundo e, portanto, a impossibilidade do fim da história.

ABSTRACT
This  article  starts  from  the  famous  diagnostic  of  the  end  of  history -thesis defended    by  Francis  Fukuyama  just  after  the  fall  of  the  Berlin  Wall. Inspired  by  authors  as  Michel  Foucault,  Gilles  Deleuze  and  Giorgio Agamben base their work on a perspective which holds that the machinery of capital -much more than an economic system -is the producer of subjectivity: inplotsof knowing and power operated by devices, it duplicates lives in order to create ways of existence in a way more and more precise and in aneveryday basis. What is insinuated in the idea then is the thesis of Walter Benjamin: capitalism  as  religion -manufacturing  existences  uninterruptedly  starting from  the  unceasing  dissemination  of  devices.  In  the  presenta  generation  that works  for  the  end  of  history  would  be  announced -the one  that  would  live making  happen  what  in  one  occasion  Italo  Calvino  called  hell.  From  this diagnosis, -following  Maurice  Blanchot  and  Roberto  Bolaño,  the  bet  is  that what is operated under literary experience can weaken the plot devices already ready  froma  supposed  end  of  history -and  this  politic  task  would  be  in charge  of  making  flourish  the  power  of  art:  to  enforce  the  unending  of  the world, therefore, the impossibility of the end of history
