Lactating mothers

Background: Describing vitamin D status and its predictors in various populations is important in order to target public health measures. Objectives: To describe the status and predictors of vitamin D status in healthy Nepalese mothers and infants. Methods: 500 randomly selected Nepalese mother and infant pairs were included in a cross-sectional study. Plasma 25(OH)D concentrations were measured by LC-MS/MS and multiple linear regression analyses were used to identify predictors of vitamin D status. Results: Among the infants, the prevalence of vitamin D insufficiency (25(OH)D <50 nmol/L) and deficiency (<30 nmol/L) were 3.6% and 0.6%, respectively, in contrast to 59.8% and 14.0% among their mothers. Infant 25(OH)D concentrations were negatively associated with infant age and positively associated with maternal vitamin D status and body mass index (BMI), explaining 22% of the variability in 25(OH)D concentration. Global solar radiation, maternal age and BMI predicted maternal 25(OH)D concentration, explaining 9.7% of its variability. Conclusion: Age and maternal vitamin D status are the main predictors of vitamin D status in infants in Bhaktapur, Nepal, who have adequate vitamin D status despite poor vitamin D status in their mothers.

Daun tanaman bangun-bangun (Coleus amboinicus Lour) termasuk salah satu tanaman pangan yang memiliki fungsi sebagai laktagogum, yaitu dapat meningkatkan sekresi dan produksi air susu ibu. Oleh karena itu, daun bangun-bangun sangat potensial untuk dimanfaatkan sebagai salah satu bahan dalam pengembangan produk makanan tambahan fungsional bagi ibu menyusui. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah mengembangkan produk sebagai makanan tambahan fungsional bagi ibu menyusui melalui pemanfaatan fungsi laktagogum yang dimiliki daun bangun-bangun. Pembuatan dua jenis produk cepat saji masing-masing dengan jenis dan jumlah bahan dasar yang sama tetapi jumlah penambahan daun bangun-bangun yang berbeda, yaitu 120 dan 150 g. Hasil uji organoleptik oleh 40 orang ibu menyusui sebagai panelis menunjukkan bahwa rata-rata kesukaan panelis terhadap kedua produk tidak berbeda signifikan dan secara keseluruhan hampir semua panelis dapat menerima kedua produk. Therefore, the bangun-bangun leaves are potential to be used as an ingredient in the product development of supplement and functional foods for lactating mothers. The objective of this research is to develop supplement and functional foods for lactating mothers from the bangun-bangun leaves.Two types of products were made with same type and amount of basic material, but different in the amount of bangun-bangun leaves, i.e.120 or 150 g. Results of organoleptic test using 40 lactating mothers as panelists show that the average panelist favorite for both products were not significantly different and altogether all panelists can accept the two products.

Eating habits of lactating women can influence the nutrient composition of human milk, which in turn influences nutrient intake of breastfed infants. The aim of the present study was to identify food patterns and nutritional adequacy among lactating women in Europe. Data from a multicentre European longitudinal cohort (ATLAS study) were analysed to identify dietary patterns using cluster analysis. Dietary information from 180 lactating women was obtained using 3-d food diaries over the first 4 months of lactation. Four dietary patterns were identified: ‘vege-oils’, ‘fish-poultry’, ‘confectionery-salads’ and ‘mixed dishes’. Nutrition adequacy was not significantly different between clusters, but the ‘vege-oils’ cluster tended to yield the highest nutrition adequacy measured by Mean Adequacy Ratio.
