The various benefits of engaging in regular physical activity have been well docu- mented in the literature (Chaddock-Heyman. Hillman, Cohen, & Kramer, 2014; Janssen & LeBlanc, 2010), However, many youth in the United States do not meet the cur- rent national physical activity guidelines (Kann et al., 2014), par- ticularly children with disabilities (Rimmer, Rowland, & Yamaki. 2007). Physical inactivity can lead to many negative health-related conditions among young persons (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2011). The Institute of Medicine (2013) anc the CDC (2011) have advocated physical education as a way tc address this significant problem. In fact, the CDC school health guideline suggests providing “a substantial percentage of each stu- dent’s recommended daily amount of physical activity in physical education class” (CDC, 2011, p. 28). Further effort by the CDC has included a partnership with SHAPE America — Society of Health and Physical Educators and the development of the comprehen- sive school physical activity program (CSPAP) model.
