The relationship between Saint Maximus the Confessor and Origenism
has been described in many different ways over the years. This is partly due to the fact
that Origen's name is never mentioned in the Confessor's known works, although it
has been demonstrated since the 1950s by Polycarp Sherwood that some chapters of
Ambigua represent an explicit rejection of Origenist cosmology. Our paper brings to
light an unpublished text attributed to St. Maximus the Confessor – which could be
an unknown, much longer version (by about 900 words) of Quaestiones et dubia 19,
which deals with apokatastasis and Origenism, found in MS. Stavronikita 62, a
collection of anti-Latin and polemical texts dating from the 14th-15th centuries.

This paper investigates Isaac Newton’s engagement with biblical textual
criticism and its intrinsic connection to his anti-Trinitarian theology. In the charged intellectual climate of seventeenth-century England – marked by the proliferation of polyglot editions of Scripture and fierce debates over the Trinity – Newton forged an exegetical method that combined philological precision with historical analysis. His approach was shaped by the legacy of Erasmus, the arguments of Socinian theologians, and the critical investigations of Richard Simon, but also by his conviction that, when properly examined, Scripture retained its essential divine message despite centuries of transmission and corruption.
The discussion centers on Newton’s 'An Historical Account of Two Notable Corruptions of Scripture' (1690), where he argued that 1 John 5:7 (the comma Johanneum) and 1 Timothy 3:16 were later interpolations crafted to reinforce Trinitarian doctrine. By comparing manuscript evidence, patristic testimony, and early printed editions, Newton concluded that both passages were falsifications: absent from the earliest Greek witnesses and unknown to the Fathers during the Arian controversies. More broadly, his exegetical practice reflects a sustained effort to recover the “original” biblical text while exposing readings shaped by doctrinal agendas.

As a central endeavor of the Church Fathers, biblical hermeneutics took form and has been transmitted to us through an array of literary genres: from line-by-line commentaries on the books of Scripture to exegetical homilies and catenae, and from comprehensive treatises and scholia on selected passages to collections of questions and answers addressing difficult biblical loci. The present volume presents a series of significant patristic interpretations and exegetical approaches – each situated within its own interpretative framework and historical context – together with studies addressing other topics pertinent to contemporary patristic and historical research.

'Hymnography,' 'doxology,' 'mystagogy' are three key words that fundamentally characterize the worship and sacramental life of the Orthodox Church. The Byzantine liturgical poetry owed to Fathers such as Andrew of Crete, Germanus I, John of Damascus or Cosmas of Maiuma and later transmitted organically through the Greek liturgical corpus – which is both katanyktic and doxological – concerns the ultimate ecclesial goal which is mystagogy, the initiation into the Mystery of Christ and the mystical union with Him in the Church.

The study begins with the questions "Where was Paradise?" and "How was the Garden cultivated?", and the relationship between different modes of interpretation. It compares the biblical data (Gen. 2) with patristic testimonies (John Chrysostom, Ambrose, Ephrem, Gregory of Nyssa, John of Damascus) and symbolic readings (Philo, Cyprian, Hippolytus), in order to assess whether the plurality of meanings generates confusion or coherence. Situated within the divergent approaches of these patristic authors-especially concerning literal and figurative aspects-I aim to outline an integral theological reading of the Eden tradition and of the aforementioned questions. The methods used in this research are comparative biblical and patristic exegesis, structured through a four-step framework: (1) retaining the literal sense when the text provides anchors (rivers, orientation); (2) shifting from description to vocation in the moral-liturgical sense ("to work"/"to keep"); (3) accepting the ineffable (2 Cor. 12) as a boundary; (4) articulating an ontology of paradisiacal matter. The findings of this study are as follows: Eden is an earthly reality, but one with transfigured materiality; "work" is an inner activity (obedience, contemplation) without toil; and the diversity of interpretations proves to be complementary: the literal anchors the "where/what", while the spiritual illuminates the "why/how", together avoiding both inert geography and ungrounded symbolism.

século de contribuições de várias disciplinas, que
foram pouco a pouco adensando nossa
compreensão acerca das primeiras expressões
urbanas que surgiram ao longo do tempo em
diferentes partes do mundo. Se é certo que os
debates relativos à cidade antiga dependeram
muito da interpretação do legado textual,
sobretudo greco-latino, também é verdade que a
Arqueologia teve um papel decisivo na ampliação
do nosso estoque de conhecimento relativo às
primeiras formas urbanas, sugerindo novas
abordagens para o acontecimento. Tendo em vista
essas considerações, com este livro, Urbano e rural
na época clássica e pós-clássica, temos como
principal finalidade refletir acerca das distintas
modalidades de organização do espaço no mundo
antigo e tardo-antigo à luz do ambiente construído
da urbs ou ásty, com todo o seu aparato
arquitetônico, e da configuração do ager ou khora,
do cinturão agrícola que cercava as cidades,
devendo-se reconhecer que a experiência urbana,
na época clássica e na Antiguidade Tardia, era
produto da interseção entre as zonas urbana rural.

Esta é uma antiga questão, que tem sido renovada de tempos em tempos, e que se tornou famosa em nossos dias, a saber, se é apropriado que os solitários se dediquem aos estudos. Comumente entendemos por este termo “estudos” certos exercícios comuns e regulados, que são feitos para aprender as ciências, tais como são hoje os cursos de filosofia, teologia, e outros semelhantes, cujo conhecimento é conveniente ou necessário para os eclesiásticos.

Portanto, não se trata aqui da leitura ou da aplicação particular a certos assuntos que se relacionam com o estado monástico: pois ninguém ainda se aventurou a reprovar nos solitários esses tipos de ocupações, que são recomendadas a eles em todas as regras, tanto antigas quanto modernas.

Não é que ainda não haja dificuldade na extensão que se pode dar à matéria que faz o assunto desta aplicação particular: alguns pretendem que ela deve ser unicamente confinada nas escrituras sagradas, ou em tudo, ou mesmo em parte, e nos livros que tratam das coisas monásticas e ascéticas: e outros querendo, pelo contrário, que esta aplicação se estenda ao conhecimento de todas as ciências, que podem ser adequadas para os eclesiásticos.

Encontra-se quase menos dificuldade no fim que os solitários podem ou devem se propor na busca desses conhecimentos: pois uns são de opinião que eles não podem ter outros senão sua própria instrução, e sua perfeição particular: os outros, pelo contrário, estimam que eles podem relacionar esses conhecimentos à própria instrução do próximo, para serem empregados quando os superiores e os pastores da igreja julgarem apropriado.

Todas estas dificuldades juntas nos mostram que é necessário examinar bem esta matéria dos estudos, uma vez que, por um lado, ela é muito importante, e que, por outro, ela encerra tantas dificuldades. É isso que me levou a tratar deste assunto, depois de ter sido solicitado várias vezes, não só por aqueles que têm o direito de exigir de mim, mas também por vários dos meus amigos, que acreditavam que esta matéria, não tendo sido ainda suficientemente esclarecida, era importante examiná-la a fundo.

Sei bem que nem todos terão o mesmo julgamento, e que há certos espíritos delicados que imaginam que o público não deve ter nenhum interesse em tudo o que leva em título o nome de monges ou coisas monásticas, a menos que contenha a crítica ou a sátira. Mas nem todo mundo é tão difícil, e as pessoas equitativas julgam, pelo contrário, que se pode trabalhar utilmente para esclarecer o que diz respeito ao estado monástico, depois que o mais eloquente dos pais gregos, entre outros, empreendeu tão generosamente a defesa. Portanto, não dei muita atenção a essa falsa delicadeza, e não foi isso que me fez hesitar por algum tempo para me determinar a esta empresa. A dificuldade que eu via, e a extensão que eu acreditava que deveria ser dada a ela, causaram muito mais impressão em minha mente: mas o que mais me desviava era que um grande servo de Deus, que hoje faz tanto honra ao estado monástico, explicou-se de uma maneira tão nobre e tão elevada sobre este assunto, que é difícil ter sucesso depois dele: visto que se seguirmos seu sentimento, haverá poucas coisas a acrescentar: e se nos afastarmos dele, corremos um grande risco de não ser aprovados.

O trabalho aqui oferecido ao público é baseado nas palestras Donnellan ministradas na Universidade de Dublin na capela do Trinity College em 1901-1902. O espírito e a origem do monasticismo é um assunto que recebeu muito pouca atenção dos escritores ingleses. É claro que é tratado nas histórias padrão da Igreja, mas não de forma satisfatória. Foi objeto de alguns capítulos de um livro recentemente publicado sob o título de Cultura e Restrição. Este livro poderia ter sido de algum valor se o autor tivesse lido a literatura do monasticismo primitivo antes de escrever sobre ele. Outro livro inglês, A Ascensão do Monasticismo Cristão, sofre de uma falha oposta. O autor leu a literatura, mas de alguma forma não conseguiu captar o espírito que a animava. Só conheço outro livro inglês recente dedicado ao assunto – Prolegômenos à História Lausíaca de Dom Cuthbert Butler. O autor se recusa a discutir o ideal monástico e se limita à consideração dos fatos e à crítica da literatura. Este trabalho é, na minha opinião, a mais capaz contribuição recente para o estudo do monasticismo egípcio feita na Inglaterra ou em qualquer outro lugar. Estou profundamente endividado com este livro.

No entanto, se o meu assunto recebeu pouca atenção neste país, nos últimos anos atraiu de estudiosos alemães e franceses uma série de trabalhos valiosos. Devo mencionar apenas os nomes dos seguintes, aos quais me sinto especialmente endividado – Zockler, Harnack, Grutzmacher, Ph. Meyer, Spreitzenhofer e Amélineau. Referi-me em minhas notas a obras particulares desses autores. Estes dois fatos – que o meu assunto ocupou muito pouco os estudiosos ingleses e muito os estudiosos continentais – formam a minha justificativa para a publicação deste livro.

Estou ciente de que tenho pouca outra justificativa. Trabalhei sob uma dupla desvantagem. Em primeiro lugar, vivo longe de qualquer centro de vida intelectual. O Rev. J. A. A wide interest in late antiquity has become increasingly essential for inquiry into the Bible, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam in the early centuries of our era. "Late antiquity" is the period between approximately 250 to 750 CE, when massive cultural and political changes occurred that set the patterns of Western culture and religious belief as we know them. Attempts to rewrite first-and second-century history, as if to jump from New Testament times to the Reformation, an old criticism of both conservative and liberal Protestant scholarship, without sufficiently considering at least the third to fifth centuries, and especially the late fourth-century transition from Roman Empire to monolithic Roman Christian state, proceed with difficulty because of a lack of perspective. 1 Fortunately, Demetrios Katos has written a book that does not lack perspective, developed from a 2001 dissertation at the Catholic University of America. Have you ever paused to wonder where our core beliefs about God come from? What if the doctrines many hold as sacred weren't handed down from heaven in perfect form, but shaped-at least in part-by the people and relationships that formed the thinkers behind them? That wondering led me to Augustine of Hippo-and to his mother, Monica. A bishop from 4th-century Roman North Africa whose influence still shapes how millions understand God, Augustine of Hippo (354-430 CE) remains one of the most formative voices in Christian history. 1 His works-especially Confessions and City of God-helped shape the doctrines of sin, grace, and divine authority that continue to define both Roman Catholic and Protestant theology today. Behind this towering figure is a quieter presence: Monica-a faithful Christian. Remembered in Augustine's Confessions as patient, prayerful, and devout, 2 -venerated as the patron saint of anxious mothers. 3 Yet, beyond this reverent portrait lies a more complex legacy-Augustine saw her as the voice of God in his life 4 -perhaps the only one he trusted. Although Origen’s condemnation has long been associated with synods in Egypt around 400 and sixth-century councils in 543 and 553 under
Emperor Justinian, there also seem to be explicit anti-Origenist  implications to the Council of Ephesus in 431, and thereby anti-Origenism’s
association with the four major ecumenical councils of Christendom.
Twelve anathemas “On the faith (De fide)” seem intended to serve as
a kind of touchstone of orthodoxy and, in continuity with the synods around 400, to provide an anti-Origenist underpinning to the ecumenical Council of Ephesus, over a century prior to the sixth-century councils specifically condemning Origen, Didymus, and Evagrius. Related to the anathemas’ inclusion in the Ephesus materials is the influence there of “Epiphanius’ protégés,” the Cyprus bishops. “The vote of this holy synod [on adopting no other creed than that of Nicea],” that council decreed, “is given on the appeal made to it by the bishops of Cyprus” (Dogma and Mysticism in Early Christianity: Epiphanius of Cyprus and the Legacy of Origen, 1988, page 469).

Martin Luther (1483-1546 CE) “never came to appreciate the positive
impact of Origen’s thought in the ancient Alexandrian and Caesarean
milieu, or in the heritage of biblical and theological treasure passed along
as Origen’s legacy, including the part Erasmus (1466-1536) transmitted.
Luther never recognized the affinity and commonality of Origen’s, Erasmus', and his own quest for biblical and spiritual truth”. So ended
my presentation at Colloquium Origenianum Sextum in 1993, in summation of my analysis of Luther’s thoughts on Origen (185-254 CE),
especially on Origen’s allegorical method of biblical interpretation as
Luther understood it, (1) to 1523, (2) in 1524-1527, and (3) from 1528
on. But there were still “some 100 passages and/or contexts with significant reference to Origen” from 1528 to Luther’s death in 1546 that were not appropriate or necessary for me to treat because the compass of my study for 1993 seemed sufficient. But now, to round out the treatment:

The relation between Origen's conceptual world (ancient biblical and
philosophical tradition) and the social reality of early Christian theology is
brought into focus by the treatise of Methodius of Olympus against him 'On the Resurrection.' This polemic, written by A.D. 310 -- about half a century after Origen's death -- is the most important historical and literary source showing the beginnings of serious opposition to Origen on the subject of corporeality. It also reveals the tension precipitated by what we call today the mind-body problem as addressed by Origen from the perspective of intellectual Alexandrian Christianity. Thus it shows that the philosophical component of Origen's thought, especially about the nature and relationship of soul, mind, and body, is at the heart of the heresy accusation against him. By influencing Eustathius of Antioch (bishop c. 324-330), Epiphanius of Cyprus (c. 315-403), and the conservative Nicene tradition against Origen, Methodius' treatise, negative as it is, is the most significant basic document in determining the anti-Origenist nature of subsequent Christian tradition.

The primary aim of this article is to integrate Jerome's statement of translation principles from Ep. 57 into its historical context: the controversy between Jerome and Rufinus about the status and the correct treatment of the writings of Origen, a third-century Christian philosopher whose ideas were now being condemned as heretical in a campaign led by Jerome's patron Epiphanius, bishop of Salamis. A central concern is to evaluate the techniques and the reliability of Rufinus' and Jerome's rival translations of Origen's work Peri Archon (On First Principles). Insights from this controversy are used to consider the status of translators in communicating between different parts of the church, bishops, and lay people. As a result of these explorations, I argue that translators of Jerome's and Rufinus' status were not valued merely for their linguistic expertise but also for their theological authority, as they had to defend their moral position as well as their technical skills in rapidly shifting circumstances. The emphasis on the translator's ethical commitment and reliability, I argue in the conclusion, remains relevant in current debates around translation.

La Quaresima con i Padri e Madri del Deserto

La Quaresima è il tempo del ritorno all’essenziale, un pellegrinaggio interiore che ci conduce all’incontro con Dio. Quest’anno, lasciamoci guidare dai Padri e dalle Madri del deserto, testimoni di una spiritualità radicale che parla ancora al cuore dell’uomo contemporaneo.

Attraverso il silenzio, la meditazione e la preghiera, questi uomini e donne hanno cercato Dio con tutto il loro essere, vivendo nel deserto come luogo di purificazione e incontro. Seguendo il loro esempio, questo ritiro ci offrirà un tempo per riscoprire la profondità della vita spirituale, affrontare le tentazioni con la Parola di Dio e imparare l’arte del combattimento interiore.

Nel primo incontro, esploreremo il significato del deserto nella Scrittura e nella tradizione monastica, scoprendo come il silenzio non sia vuoto, ma spazio di ascolto e trasformazione. Successivamente, approfondiremo le tattiche della lotta spirituale, riconoscendo le insidie del nemico e le risposte di Cristo alle tentazioni. Infine, ci lasceremo condurre verso il cuore della vita cristiana: il comandamento dell’amore, vissuto nella carità, nella misericordia e nella comunione con Dio.

Attraverso detti dei Padri, momenti di riflessione e preghiera, saremo chiamati a un rinnovamento interiore che non si ferma alla Quaresima, ma trasforma il nostro cammino quotidiano. Come diceva Giovanni Cassiano, «La preghiera di questo versetto deve essere profusa senza sosta: O Dio, vieni in mio aiuto; Signore, vieni presto ad aiutarmi».

Che questo ritiro sia un’opportunità per entrare più profondamente nel mistero della Quaresima e lasciarci condurre dallo Spirito nel deserto, là dove Dio ci parla al cuore.

The debate around Theopaschism marked the Christological controversies that arose between the fifth and sixth centuries in the East, sometimes involving the West through Rome. However, the Latin Christology that developed in Gaul during the same period also repeatedly addressed the Theopaschite question, reaching different outcomes and intertwining with other doctrinal controversies, especially in the anthropological sphere. After having briefly summarised the development of the Theopaschite question in the East, this contribution will analyse from this aspect the Christological thought of some Gallic authors active between the first half of the fifth and the beginning of the sixth century, from Leporius to Cyprian of Toulon, passing through John Cassian, Vincent of Lérins, Faustus of Riez, Claudian Mamertus and Avitus of Vienne.

“Chastity is freedom from the desire to possess in all spheres of life. Only when love is chaste is it truly love. A possessive love ends up being dangerous: it imprisons, constricts and generates misery. God himself loved humanity with a chaste love; he left us free even to go astray and to turn against him. The logic of love is always the logic of freedom” (p. 112). With these words, the Norwegian author Erik Vanden challenges the definitions of love that exclude, undervalue or despise chastity. He sees this virtue as the key to understanding not only the love between human beings, but also the love that God has for us. For Varden, chastity has nothing to do with puritanism, spiritualism, mortification of the senses or the denial of sex, but is rather an orientation of sexuality, of the whole life instinct, towards a desired end; a function of wholeness sought and healing found (cf. pp. 10, 17). Throughout the book, he points out how this virtue, so often forgotten today, is essential for the reconciliation of the human senses.

“La castidad es libertad del deseo de poseer en todas las esferas de la vida. Solo cuando el amor es casto, es verdadera- mente amor. Un amor posesivo acaba siendo peligroso: aprisiona, constriñe y genera miseria. Dios mismo amó a la humanidad con un amor casto; nos dejó libres incluso para extraviarnos y ponernos en su contra. La lógica del amor es siempre la lógica de la libertad” (p. 112). Con estas pala- bras, el autor noruego Erik Var- den, reta las definiciones del amor que excluyen, minusvaloran o desprecian la castidad. Pues pone esta virtud como pieza clave para la comprensión no solo del amor entre los hombres, sino del amor que Dios tiene con nosotros. Para Varden la castidad no tiene nada que ver con puritanismo, espiritualismo, mortificación de los sentidos o negación del sexo, sino que es más bien una orientación de la sexualidad, de todo el instinto vi- tal, hacia una finalidad deseada; una función de totalidad buscada y curación encontrada (cf. pp. 10, 17). A lo largo del libro va dando claves sobre cómo esta virtud tan olvidada hoy en día es pieza esencial para la reconciliación de los sentidos del ser humano.

The quadripartite hermeneutics of John Cassian, based on the doctrine of Clement of Alexandria and Evagrius Ponticus, had sufficient echo in Greek and Arabic pa- tristic literature, up to the ninth century, to be taken up by a Sufi master open to Christian influences such as Sahl Al-Tustari. Theodore Abu Qurrah, on the Chris- tian side, and Dhū ‘l Nūn al-Misri, on the Muslim side, among others, are examined as possible bridges between the two traditions.

[English] The    subject of this article is the analysis of the symbolic interpretation of animals as presented by Eucherius of Lyon in his work Formulae spiritalis intellegentiae. The article examines Eucherius’s interests and knowledge in the field of symbolic interpretation of animals,  the  sources  he  used,  and  the  content  of  his  interpretation.  The  primary  source  of  the  research  are  Formulae spiritalis intellegentiae,  which  is  compared  primarily  with  another  exegetical  work,  Instructiones.  The  research  reveals  that  Eucherius  possesses  a  fundamentally  good  knowledge  of  biblical  animals,  largely  indebted  to  the  sources  he  utilized.  His  interpretation  addresses  several  fundamental  themes:  theological  issues, where the author interprets animals as symbols of Christ, the Holy Spirit, or, in opposition, the devil (demons, idols). Anthropological interpretations are also frequent, wherein animals symbolize people judged positively or negatively for moral or doctrinal reasons. Animals can  also symbolize Scripture and types of its interpretation. Eucherius’s works are addressed to his sons, Salonius and Veranius, who later became bishops. The works were also intended for a    wider audience, and it is evident that Eucherius assumed a certain level of proficiency and familiarity with the Holy Scripture and its interpretation among his readers, hence he did not see the need to provide overly detailed or fundamental explanations

[Polski] Przedmiotem niniejszego artykułu jest analiza interpretacji symbolicznej zwierząt, jaką Eucheriusz z Lyonu zawarł w swoim dziele Formulae spiritalis intellegenatiae. Zostało podjęte zagadnienie zainteresowań i wiedzy Eucheriusza na polu interpretacji symbolicznej zwierząt, wykorzystanych przez niego źródeł a także samej treści interpretacji. Podstawowe źródło badań to określone w temacie Formulae spiritalis intellegentiae, które jest skonfrontowane przede wszystkim z drugim dziełem egzegetycznym – Instructiones. Badania ukazują, że Eucheriusza ma zasadniczo dobrą wiedzę o zwierzętach biblijnych, którą zawdzięcza w dużej mierze wykorzystanym źródłom. Jego interpretacja podejmuje kilka zasadniczych tematów: są to zagadnienia teologiczne, według których autor interpretuje zwierzęta jako symbole Chrystusa Ducha Świętego, albo przeciwnie, diabła (demonów, bożków). Częste są także interpretacje antropologiczne, w których zwierzęta są symbolami ludzi ocenianych pozytywnie lub negatywnie ze względów moralnych lub doktrynalnych. Zwierzęta mogą także symbolizować Pismo Święte i rodzaje jego interpretacji. Adresami dzieł Eucheriusza są jego synowie Saloniusz i Weraniusz, późniejsi biskupi. Dzieła były też przeznaczone dla szerszego grona odbiorów, i jest w nich widoczne, że Eucheriusz zakładał u czytelników pewną biegłość i znajomość Pisma św. oraz jego interpretacji i nie widział konieczności podawania zbyt szczegółowych i fundamentalnych wyjaśnień.

According to the renowned scholar of Hellenistic Judaism, Philo, the concept of naming is the core of language research, which embodies a profound intellectual tradition. By comprehending the essence of existent entities, human beings can name their essence through the creation of representational names. This process entails a meticulous contemplation of the nature of these entities, ultimately resulting in generation of names that accurately depict their true essence. In this context, he considers individual proper names, and he is one of the firsts who expounded upon it in his authentic treatise, De mutatione nominum, which can be placed within onomastica sacra. Specifically, this examination will focus on Philo's elucidation of the "proper names" attributed to distinct religious personalities. Usually, such figures have double names one before appointment by God and one after appointment each one with its own rationale. Quando si sente l'espressione "fare la monaca," l'immaginazione corre facilmente all'atto visibile dell'ingresso di una giovane donna in monastero. Questa frase, spesso usata in tono colloquiale, evoca l'idea di un cambiamento di vita concreto: il lasciare il mondo per intraprendere una nuova esistenza scandita da regole, preghiera e silenzio. Tuttavia, "fare la monaca" rischia di ridursi a un cambiamento esteriore, concentrandosi sugli aspetti visibili e istituzionali della vita monastica, senza necessariamente penetrare la sua dimensione spirituale più profonda. "Essere una monaca," invece, introduce un'altra prospettiva, meno tangibile ma più essenziale. Questo concetto implica un'adesione interiore alla vocazione monastica, una trasformazione del cuore e della mente che rende autentico ogni gesto, ogni preghiera e ogni silenzio. Come sottolinea Giovanni Cassiano, nel Collationes I, il percorso del monaco non consiste semplicemente nell'assumere un'abitudine o nell'osservare delle regole, ma nel "ritrovare Dio con purezza di cuore" (puritas cordis), il che richiede un continuo discernimento tra le opere esteriori e l'intima conversione dell'anima. Cassiano distingue chiaramente tra l'opus e il cor, ovvero tra ciò che si fa e ciò che si è. Egli scrive: "Non è sufficiente praticare opere buone, se queste non nascono da un cuore retto. Libertas, em De domo, é a pulchra Libertas, associada à licentia de P. Clódio Pulcher, uma deusa privada e ilegítima instalada em uma propriedade privada -a domus de um cidadão -, cuja dedicação foi feita irregularmente. Concordia, por sua vez, é a boa deusa que reside em um templum devida e legitimamente consagrado, e a estátua é legítima. É uma deusa pública, presidindo o senado no forum romanum. O corpus ciceroniano é uma referência inescapável para o estudo da história religiosa, política e intelectual romana. Cícero delimita e ressignifica conceitualmente os espaços, as personagens, as práticas e as instituições religiosas romanas no século I AEC. 2 Interessome especificamente pelo papel das estátuas de deuses na obra de Cícero, com ênfase nos conteúdos sobre a imagem e a presença dos deuses, que são constantes em sua obra filosófica, seus discursos e sua correspondência. Cícero revela a estreita conexão entre religião e política na Roma tardo-republicana, trazendo questões pertinentes à construção, uso e recepção de estátuas divinas em diferentes contextos políticos e religiosos. A questão religiosa está no cerne do discurso e a principal estratégia de Cícero foi demonstrar que a dedicação não era válida por ter sido feita à revelia dos procedimentos institucionais romanos, bem como que o dedicante seria indigno de uma ação religiosa propriamente dita. 11 Em De domo, a religião pública tornase um campo de batalha. Cícero tinha, obviamente, um objetivo muito prático no discurso: a restituição da sua casa. Diante de experts religiosos, os "litigantes" Cícero e Clódio eram, ambos, atores política e religiosamente legítimos. 12 A primeira parte do discurso visa a desacreditar Clódio politicamente (Dom., 3-31), e o próprio Cícero nomeia essa seção como uma digressão (Dom., 3; 32). Uma grave dificuldade era o sentimento compartilhado de que algo dedicado aos deuses não podia ser reclamado por um ser humano. Provavelmente havia apreensões religiosas entre os senadores, daí terem remetido o caso aos pontífices. Cícero é cauteloso no discurso, 9 A casa era muito valiosa em termos simbólicos e econômicos. Sobre este ponto, ver principalmente Berg (1997). Para Cícero (Att., 3, 15, 6; 3, 20, 2; Fam., 14, 2, 3; Dom., 100; 143; 147), seu retorno e restauração não seriam completos sem a recuperação integral de sua casa. Sobre a lei que chamou Cícero de volta a Roma e garantiu a reconstrução da casa no Palatino e de duas villae depredadas por Clódio, ver Cícero (Har. resp., 11) e Plutarco (Cic., 33, 4). Após o exordium (Cic., Dom., 1-2), ele discorre sobre si mesmo, sobre Pompeu e os pontífices (Cic., Dom., 3-31). 14 Segundo Cícero (Dom., 69), os pontífices se reuniam para defendê-lo e foram acionados pelo senado, por iniciativa de M. Bíbulo, a fim de garantir que nenhuma oposição à restituição integral da casa do Palatino poderia ser feita, por Clódio ter agido sem base legal ou religiosa (nihil legibus, nihil religionibus, nihil iure esse actum). Seguem-se ataques ad hominem a Clódio e às suas ações políticas e legislativas (Cic., Dom.,, com referências à sua gens e a desqualificação da sua adoção pelo plebeu P. Fonteio, em 59, e de seu tribunato (Cic., Dom.,(32)(33)(34)(35)(36)(37)(38)(39)(40)(41)(42), que fazem com que Clódio surja violando tanto o fas quanto o ius. Se sua adoção fora irregular, consequentemente suas ações como tribuno da plebe foram ou ilegais ou, no mínimo, questionáveis. Segue-se a caracterização do exílio de Cícero (Dom., 43-53) como um privilegium, as circunstâncias violentas da adoção da lex Clodia de exilio Ciceronis (Cic., Dom.,(53)(54)(55)(56)(57)(58)(59)(60)(61), em que Cícero (Dom., 62-64) se apresenta como um "bode expiatório", e a seção se encerra com a narrativa dos eventos e ações subsequentes (Cic., Dom.,. 15 13 Gildenhard (2011, p. 300-326) analisa a justiça dos deuses, a relação entre religião e política, a teodiceia ciceroniana e o tema do Clódio furens. 14 Pompeu apoiara publicamente não apenas a lex de reditu, mas também o apelo de Cícero (Dom., 25) aos pontífices com sua presença no momento do discurso, e Júlio César, o pontifex maximus, estava na Gália. 15 No início de 58, Clódio fez promulgar a lex de capite civis Romani, que especificava que água e fogo deviam ser negados a quem matasse um cidadão romano sem julgamento (Kelly, 2006, p. 108; 110-124; 190). Sobre a lex Clodia de exilio Ciceronis, a segunda lei de Clódio, que Cícero define como um privilegium, ver Stroh (2004, p. 316-318). Esta segunda lei previa o banimento permanente de Cícero e incluía provisões para a dedicação de um altar para a Libertas no terreno da casa do Palatino. De fato, Cícero (Sest., 73) não nega que ambas eram, tecnicamente falando, leis, mas põe o acento na violência com que foram promulgadas. Libertas e concordia espaço, representação e poder no mundo romano LIBERTAS E CONCORDIA: DISpUTA pOlÍTICO-RElIgIOSA NAS ESTáTUAS Estudos recentes já demonstraram o uso religioso de imagens inclusive nos próprios textos sagrados de diferentes religiões. 20 Contudo, as estratégias para tornar o divino presente e acessível, e sua dependência de discursos verbais que configuram a imaginação e o pensamento dos fiéis, às vezes para limitar ou tornar ilícitas certas formas de uso de imagens, é algo que demanda mais pesquisas. A interação entre as imagens, a imaginação, as referências e esforços para a apresentação visual e para dar sentido ao divino são temas que vêm trazendo novas contribuições ao entendimento das percepções da cultura visual em diferentes religiões. Na República tardia, longe de nos movermos em estruturas religiosas seguras e há muito estabelecidas, somos levados a um mundo no qual as dinâmicas e a própria semântica religiosa estavam na ordem do dia e eram disputadas. Recentemente argumentei que três modos principais de lidar com estátuas divinas podem ser detectados na obra de Cícero (Beltrão, 2021a). O primeiro é a estátua como objetivação dos deuses, materializando a presença divina, exemplificado nas menções à Hermathena da villa de Túsculo em cartas a Ático (Cic., Att., 1, 1, 5; 1, 4, 3; Beltrão, 2018a). O segundo modo é quando a estátua se confunde com a divindade, tornando-se uma estátua "animada", por exemplo, no caso da estátua de Júpiter na Terceira Catilinária (Cic., Cat., 3, esp. 19-22; Beltrão, 2020a) e da própria Libertas de Clódio expulsando deuses domésticos legítimos da casa de Cícero (Dom., 108), uma criação da performance do orador (Beltrão, 2021a). O terceiro modo, por sua vez, refere-se ao uso da estátua como ferramenta para se pensar e conceber os deuses, que exemplifiquei no debate teológico em De natura deorum sobre a relação entre a figura material e o pensamento do divino (Beltrão, 2018b; 2020b; 2021b). Aqui estão em pauta as estátuas da Libertas e da Concordia em De domo inseridas no terceiro modo ciceroniano 20 Ver, por exemplo, os estudos reunidos em Arnhold, Maier e Rüpke (2018).

The paper offers an analysis of different types of sources – literary, religious, and juridical – that address the issue of the medieval obsession with images and the ways in which they influenced the minds of individuals. These  testimonies are the product of a shared imaginary and are presented as evidence of the rationalisation of forms of malaise in the imaginal realm. They all attempted, each with its own linguistic, rhetorical, and communicative codes,  to account for the influence that material and immaterial images could exert on the minds of individuals, for example by causing states of profound psychic and physical prostration.

In this study, the author evaluates the relevance of St. John Cassian's teachings in Institutes of the Coenobia (De institutis coenobiorum) and Conferences (Conlationes) for ordinary Christians. In the first part, the essence of monastic life is presented, as viewed by Cassian. According to his instructions, the immediate goal of a monk is the healing from principal faults (i.e., vices, spiritual diseases, or deadly sins) and the crowning with virtues, while the final one is reaching the kingdom of heaven. In this effort, asceticism is an agent, but not an end in itself. Following this thought, the monk can attain spiritual growth and feel God's grace in his heart. In the second part of the study, two modern examples are provided, demonstrating that St. John Cassian's teachings are also relevant to ordinary Christians today. Under the careful guidance of a skilled spiritual father, and following an asceticism adapted to their condition, the ordinary believers can attain an authentic spiritual growth, deepening in the intimate man-God relationship.
