Hypermodern Theory

Διάκριση (1ο Βραβείο) στον Πανελλήνιο Διαγωνισμό Δοκιμίου Αισθητικής της Ελληνικής Εταιρείας Αισθητικής με θέμα: «Επίκαιρες αισθητικές προκλήσεις θεωρίας-πράξης στον 21ο αιώνα».
Θέμα του συγκεκριμένου  δοκιμίου  αποτελεί  η έννοια της  αισθ-ηθικής  στο  πεδίο  της αρχιτεκτονικής, έννοια που αξίζει μια σοβαρή σπουδή απ’ όλους τους συναφείς, αλλά και μη, κλάδους, γιατί εξετάζει την ουσιώδη θέση, ότι δεν υπάρχει ηθική που να μην στηρίζεται σε μιαν αισθητική. Ο όρος αποτελεί νεολογισμό του Φιλίπ Λακού-Λαμπάρτ και αποδίδεται στη θεμελιώδη χειρονομία του  ψυχαναλυτή Ζακ Λακάν να αποσπάσει την αισθητική από την αισθητική, από τον ίδιο της τον εαυτό, δηλαδή απ’ ότι την συγκροτεί ως τέτοια από την εποχή του Πλάτωνα, από ό,τι δηλαδή τη συγκροτεί ως μίμηση. Σύμφωνα με μιαν αυστηρή χαϊντεγγεριανή λογική,  το «πριν» της αρχιτεκτονικής δημιουργίας σημαίνει ότι είναι «μπροστά» από εμάς. Η δημιουργία  στοχάζεται, άρα ενέχει ένα «μη εστοχασμένο» (Ungedachte), το οποίο σχηματίζει ένα στοχαστικό ορίζοντα, διαμορφώνοντας ένα μέλλον.

Nel maggio 2019, l’Azienda Sanitaria Locale della provincia di Salerno decise di interrompere senza preavviso la pubblicazione interna di Audit News, un periodico digitale che per oltre un decennio aveva rappresentato per la platea aziendale uno spazio di confronto professionale, riflessione critica e dialogo organizzativo. A sei anni di distanza, la vicenda solleva interrogativi ancora attuali sul ruolo della comunicazione interna nelle amministrazioni pubbliche, sul rapporto tra potere e autonomia espressiva, e sull’effettiva attuazione dei principi di trasparenza e partecipazione. In questo contesto, il pensiero di George Orwell, strenuo difensore della libertà di pensiero e oppositore di ogni forma di controllo ideologico, offre una chiave di lettura preziosa per comprendere le implicazioni culturali e democratiche di quella scelta. Rileggere Orwell non è solo un omaggio intellettuale, ma un invito a riflettere sul significato profondo della parola libera dentro le istituzioni pubbliche.

The process of documentary representation must maintain a tension between the particular and the general. The appearance (or irruption) of moments of authenticity, reality, and truth in this process is the guarantee that the film operates on democratic lines, responsible at once to the individual instance and the totality.

The paper presents the first analytical study of the Ukrainian metamodern story, Kateryna Babkina's, Mom, do you remember?. It claims that the full-scale invasion of Russia into Ukraine fostered the formation of a new structure of feeling in Ukrainian society and culture, which can be described as a local variant of metamodern feeling. The paper aims to apply the metamodern framework for the close reading of Ukrainian literature and formulate a hypothesis about the characteristic features of Ukrainian literary metamodernism. Upon defining and tracing the universal components of metamodern sensibility, it dwells on the specific local ones, underscoring the methodological and conceptual challenges on the way. When determining the possible local features of Ukrainian metamodern literature, it addresses the anthropological and historical sources on post-Soviet Ukraine and the caesura of 2022.

Politics and history aside, the other strength of the book is the ecological and environmental story, as three states, more often than not with very poor relations, had to agree on ways to preserve the special character of the region, given the potential for environmental degradation. Two photos in the book say it all: the first shows an old fishing house on the shores of Great Prespa Lake in 1960 and the second shows the same house well inland in this century; the water level dropped by more than five metres during the period from 1985 to 1995 alone. On the plus side, despite the name dispute and, according to the locals, a flood of Albanians arriving to steal sheep, by 2000 all sides had agreed to the creation of a shared national park, Prespa Park -the first trans-boundary protected area in southeastern Europe. If one thinks of what was ahead in Macedonia in the summer of 2001, the achievement takes on even greater significance. The final chapter focuses largely on the name issue, its eventual resolution, and the larger political issues that appeared. While the dignitaries arrived there to seal the deal, many locals were largely unwilling to approve an agreement that they claimed "humiliated" Greece (152). After the politicians left, just like after every other turning point until then, Prespa went back to being the lonely place it had always been.

The survey (from 2018) Will the Humanities Survive? by I. Hostová and V. Rácová addresses the current challenges faced by the humanities and social sciences due to their increasing instrumentalization and economization. The authors highlight the marginalization of fundamental research and the pressure of quantitative evaluation criteria, which threaten the quality of scholarship and the survival of locally specific disciplines. They criticize the current funding and evaluation system, arguing that it is poorly suited to small academic environments, and emphasize the urgent need for reform. The survey gathers diverse perspectives on these issues, aiming to contribute to the discussion on the sustainability of the humanities in a shifting academic landscape.

Rácovej sa zaoberá súčasnými výzvami, ktorým čelia humanitné a spoločenské vedy v dôsledku ich rastúcej inštrumentalizácie a ekonomizácie. Autorky poukazujú na marginalizáciu základného výskumu a tlak na kvantitatívne kritériá hodnotenia, čo ohrozuje kvalitu vedy a lokálne špecifické disciplíny. Kritizujú súčasný systém financovania a hodnotenia, ktorý je nevhodne aplikovaný na malé akademické prostredia a zároveň zdôrazňujú potrebu reformy. Anketa zhromažďuje rôzne pohľady na problematiku a snaží sa prispieť k diskusii o udržateľnosti humanitných vied v meniacom sa akademickom prostredí.

As of today, archaeological theory is represented by numerous simultaneously developing approaches. Some of them feature the ways archaeological theory conceptualizes the past. Others are self-reflexive and explore the political and social dimensions of contemporary archaeological practice. However, these different ways to discuss today’s archaeology rarely approach it in a holistic way, while recent advances in the studies of arts and culture , namely metamodern studies, suggest another perspective and foster looking at archaeology as a whole, drawing connections between the philosophical aspects of archaeological knowledge and the social and cultural features of archaeology as practiced by 21st-century scholars.
This paper tests metamodernism as a theory capable of structuring and coherently describing contemporary archaeological practice. After outlining the most prominent structures of feeling of the 20th century – modernism and postmodernism, – it introduces metamodernism as a theoretical framework that describes the culture and society of 21st century. While this framework does not present any novel paradigm or suggest any new way of conducting archaeology, it aims to structure the existing practices more clearly. The paper explores the capacity of metamodern concepts to bridge posthumanism, actor-network theory, and epistemic scaffolding and reveals their logical connection to the structure of today’s archaeological research.

Io e la pubblicità Riflessioni di lettura su Lire 26.900 di Frèdèric Beigbeder Alphonse Doria La prima cosa che ho letto dopo il sillabario, qualcuno si ricorda del sillabario? E' stata la propaganda dello spumante Asti Cinzano, inziava Cin Cin… Da bambino quale ero, notavo il linguaggio semplice a presa rapida, e per me, per quello che riuscivo a capire, era una forma d'arte. Il mio rapporto con la pubblicità è stato sempre costante, negli anni '70 incominciai a scoprire il pericolo della manipolazione mentale e quindi il condizionamento nelle scelte. La pubblicità era il risultato della propaganda. Pur adoperando nell'ambito commerciale il termine pubblicità, non vi è insito solo il successo della vendita del prodotto in oggetto, ma l'intenzione al cambiamento dell'acquirente, un cambiamento che spesso si ripercuote nelle scelte di costume e politiche, quindi bisogna stare attenti ad assorbire la pubblicità, non bisogna distrarsi, perché proprio in quell'attimo di distrazione si intrufola nella mente il messaggio della propaganda. Ad esempio la pubblicità del primo spumante italiano invitava a festeggiare con una bella coppa tutti assieme per il boom italiano degli anni '60, quindi ottimismo, speranza per il futuro. Ecco che si innescava sull'ottimismo il prodotto, traghettando questo ottimismo in tutta l'Italia. Mentre nel nord, nel Piemonte, vi era l'ottimismo della ripresa industriale, nel sud iniziava la disperazione dell'emigrazione, dei pianti e degli addii, eppure quelli che restavano, o tornavano dall'estero, brindavano con il Cin, cin, Cinzano. La cosa che mi sorprese in quegli anni quando i prodotti che iniziavo a vedere nei caroselli televisivi, me li trovavo nella bottega di Gerlando Dibella con i cartonati, in particolare le vallette natalizie dello Stock 84, poi la mucca Carolina, eccetara. Era sorprendente che dallo schermo erano presenti nella vetrinetta del mio paese. L'effetto era potente e condizionate. Io non sono un figlio della televisione, in gran parte l'ho subita, ricordo che le prime volte mi spaventava, ma della radio. Quando incominciai a capire in paese televisori ve ne erano poco e niente. Poi mio padre ha riempito il paese e il circondario d'apparecchi televisivi. We are going through a time of transition, a change of epoch symbolically started with the attacks of September 11 th 2001, that is perhaps declaring the end of post-modern. While the latter was characterised by nihilism and lack of clear targets, the time that is being outlined seems instead to claim for a new axiology, as the previous moral apathy was no more sustainable. Our society is more worried by the need of protection and control, and invokes for limiting freedom in order to guarantee security. This general perspective has unavoidable consequences also in education, that is maybe experiencing a quick change of paradigm. The present essay tries to outline this new trend, particularly through the analysis of some recent books for children.

Notre intention est de confronter ici, quoique brièvement, les idées de Max Weber (déjà classiques et bien connues) sur l’ethos du premier capitalisme aux thèses du sociologue allemand Hartmut Rosa, au sujet du moteur culturel de l’accélération sociale, caractéristique de nos sociétés contemporaines. Cette confrontation permettra d’établir un parallèle entre la société capitaliste naissante et la nôtre : car si le besoin de certitude concernant le salut de nos âmes fut déterminant pour consolider le mode de vie capitaliste à ses origines, le moteur culturel d’accélération sociale le plus important aujourd’hui pourrait bien être un équivalent fonctionnel sécularisé de cette vieille motivation religieuse.

When it comes to obscene language (mat) in contemporary Russian literature, the name of Vladimir Sorokin is sure to be mentioned. Since the beginning of his literary career, taboo language1 has featured prominently in his texts and become one of the most distinctive features of the “trademark Sorokin.”2 Sorokin’s association with “unprintable language” is, in fact, so strong that Russian literary critics even pay attention to the lack of mat in his works. For example, in their review of the novel Put’ Bro (Bro, 2004), Aleksandr Voznesenskii and Evgenii Lesin noted

Κλείνοντας την εργασία, αναφέρομαι σε πολλές από τις αρετές των δίδυμων εννοιών στη θεωρητικοποίηση και στην κινητοποίηση της μεθοδολογικής επιφυλακτικότητας στη συλλογιστική των κοινωνικών επιστημών.

ملخص الدراسة
منذ تسعينيات القرن العشرين، شهدت ما بعد الحداثة تغييرات واضحة في مواجهة العولمة والتكنولوجيا الرقمية، حيث يدعي بعض المنظرين والنقاد أن ما بعد الحداثية قد ماتت. وطرحوا تبعًا لذلك العديد من نظريات بعد ما بعد الحداثية، ولكل منها منظوره الخاص ومجاله المحدد.
تحاول كل هذه النظريات مراجعة بارادايم ما بعد الحداثية وتطوبر بارادايم جديد. ومع اختلاف مضامينها وتوجهاتها، إلا أن الثيمة الرئيسية في كل من هذه التنظيرات هي التركيب في مواجهة التفكيك ما بعد الحداثي. كما أن هناك اهتمام متجدد بالقيم الإنسانية والحقيقة والتواصل وإعادة النظر في الذاتية الإنسانية في الحياة الواقعية والأدب. إذ بدا أننا نتجه نحو تعريف أوسع للواقع يتجاوز التفسير ما بعد الحداثي للعالم القائم على النسبية والتهكم الساخر. تتشارك هذه التنظيرات مؤشرًا آخر ألا وهو عودة السرديات الكبرى. إن الاعتقاد بأن العالم مهدد بتغير المناخ الناجم عن أنشطة بشرية هو واحد من أقوى السرديات الكبرى وأكثرها انتشارًا في يومنا هذا، وما كوفيد 19 عنا ببعيد.
سأقوم في هذا البحث بتحليل ومقارنة ونقد بعض المحاولات لوصف بعد ما بعد الحداثية. وقد قمت بتجميع هذه النظريات، لأغراض هذه الدراسة فقط، في ثلاث فئات بناءً على ثيمتها الرئيسية. أولاً: النظريات التي تركز على السياسة والاقتصاد وتشمل، أولًا: ما بعد الألفية، وعبر الحداثة، وأزمنة الحداثة الفائقة، والحداثة القسموسية، وبعد ما بعد الحداثة. وثانياً: النظريات ذات المنظور التكنولوجي وتشمل: الحداثية الرقمية، والحداثية الآلية، وثالثاً: النظريات التي تهتم بالفن والأدب وتناولت منها: الحداثية المغايرة، والحداثية المتذبذبة، والأدائية. والمغايرة القومية، ونظرية التعقيد.
وتخلص الورقة إلى أن أيًا من الاطروحات المقترحة لم يحظ بقبول أكاديمي أو شعبي يضاهي ذلك الذي حظيت بها ما بعد الحداثية في سنوات ازدهارها وحتى مع مزاعم أفولها. لذلك، لازال التحدي الذي طرحته ليندا هتشيون قائمًا ولا زلنا ننتظر تسمية تحيط بثقافة ما بعد الاستعمار وما بعد الإنسانية والرقمية التي نعيشها اليوم، ولا تتجاهل هيمنة السرديات الاستبدادية والرجعية الجديدة للنيوليبرالية.
Post-postmodernism


Abstract
Since the 1990s, postmodernism has undergone distinctively visible changes in the face of globalization and digital technology, as some theorists and critics claim that postmodernism is dead. Consequently, they have proposed many post-postmodern theories each of them respectively maintains its particular perspective from diverse areas.
All these theories try to depict a new paradigm and replace the postmodernism. A central revision is a reconstruction: as opposed to postmodernist deconstruction, post-postmodernism will reconstruct. There is a renewed interest in human values, truth, communication, and reconsidering human subjectivity in real life and literature. We seem to move towards a wider definition of reality that goes beyond the postmodern interpretation of the world based on relativism and irony. Another indicator of postmodernity's demise is the return of the metanarrative. The belief that the world is threatened by man-made climate change is one of the most powerful and pervasive metanarratives of today.
In this paper, I will analyze, compare, and criticize some attempts to describe what comes after postmodernism. I grouped these theories, only for the purpose of this study, into three categories based on the main premises. First: theories that focus on politics and economy which include: post- millennialism age transmodernity hypermodern times, cosmodernism, post-postmodernism
Second: theories with technological perspectives: Digimodernism, automodernism. Thirdly, theories that concern with art and literature: Altermodernity, metamodernism, performatism. heterolinationalism, and complexion theory.

The paper concludes with the idea that none of the proposed theses has gained academic or popular acceptance comparable to that enjoyed by postmodernism in its heyday and even with its alleged decline. Therefore, the challenge posed by Linda Hutcheon still exists and we are still waiting for a name that befits the post-colonial, post-humanist, and digital culture we live in today, and does not ignore the dominance of the new authoritarian and reactionary narratives of neoliberalism.

The paper, analysing the main Italian published works for children, tries to describe how the Covid-19 pandemic has been presented to the childhood, particularly the hygienic rules to hold. From that, the hypothesis that we are passing through a transitional epoch, during which also the main educative paradigms, that seem distancing themselves from the ones followed in the last decades, are been redefining. This discontinuity can be interpretd under the category of “hyper-modernity”.

This paper's focus is on the development of research methodologies to investigate learning in higher education. These methodologies have made use of Social Mobile Devices (SMD) for data collection, a relativity new concept in qualitative research. The paper provides examples of practice linked with discussions from the Learning Without Frontiers Conference 2011 (LWF 2011) around the constraints, affordances, and ethical issues inherent in the use of SMDs for research. While the researchers used Apple iPhones and Apple iPads, this should not limit the applicability of the paper to other devices. It is hoped that this paper will aid the development of these tools for research purposes in the future through wider discussion, use, and dissemination. Technological development of SMDs continues unabated, hence developing methodologies around their use is an important task that will enable researchers to take advantage of the future applications they provide, whilst being aware of their impact upon the research process.

The paper is focused on the analysis of post-Soviet Russian literature. Using the advances of contemporary political philosophy, it considers the years between 1990 and 2022 as a period of post-Soviet transit that was interrupted by the Russian full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The paper uses metamodern theory and method to study the texts of two leading Russian authors of that period — Viktor Pelevin and Vladimir Sorokin. Moreover, it compares the results of literary analyses with those of sociological surveys and studies performed in Russia since 1990.
Metamodernism is considered a sufficient frame to enhance the characteristic features of the studied authors' early and recent texts. It is perceived through the previously formulated methodologies and analyzed through its main features: oscillation, structural desire for “we”, constructive agenda, new sincerity, and the natural pairing with the object-oriented ontology.
When this frame seems insufficient, it is enforced with the hypermodern and postmodern theories. The paper studies Hermit and Sixfinger and Yellow Arrow as early Pelevin’s texts and Transhumanism Inc. as recent. Further, it focuses on the Blue Lard and Blizzard by Vladimir Sorokin. The detailed analysis shows that early Pelevin’s text introduces a striking similarity with metamodernism but lacks a critical feature about the perception of freedom, which aligns with the social surveys in the Russian 1990s. Sorokin’s writing emphasizes a slow transition from postmodern to metamodern, where Blizzard seems to be the first metamodern text produced by the author. While Viktor Pelevin describes the reality around him and slowly dives into the depressive, hypermodern worlds, Sorokin is making a prediction about Russia’s future. This prediction seems optimistic and pessimistic, remaining metamodern by its very nature.

In this paper I am going to compare Descartes method of doubt with the conspiracy way of thinking. Through the analysis of the salient features of the latter we are going to highlight what in Descartes method can’t be assimilated to it and consequently what makes of the Cartesian doubt a fruitful research procedure while the conspiracy thought is not.

In this chapter, I use the video game Guitar Hero as an exemplar to discuss the elective affinities between virtual guitar playing and a certain sensibility or “structure of feeling” characterizing everyday life and psyche in the hypermodern moment.

Apocalissi e mito sono i termini con cui potremmo riassumere l’ultimo
breve ma denso lavoro di Pierre-André Taguieff, in originale Le Théories du
complot (Paris 2021). Paura dell’apocalissi e fascino del mito, per dire meglio. Nella condivisibile ricostruzione operata da Taguieff, il fenomeno del complottismo sarebbe interpretabile come un frutto avvelenato del tradimento della modernità, un tradimento che ha dato origine a una tensione – ad oggi ancora insanabile – tra paura, ansia, incertezza, angoscia, da una parte, e bisogno di compensare e rifuggire tale disagio emotivo ed esistenziale, dall’altra. Al fondo del cospirazionismo vi sarebbe quindi – secondo Taguieff – la paura, vera “passione motrice di coloro che credono ai complotti fittizi”, che può “trasformarsi in angoscia di fronte a segni che annunciano una catastrofe” (p. 61). Paura della fine e bisogno di consolazione pongono, secondo il filosofo e sociologo francese, il fenomeno del cospirazionismo a contatto con l’elemento del mito – “che ha la pretesa di spiegare come va il mondo” (p. 56) – conferendo altresì “un orizzonte apocalittico” (p. 61).

To address the research question, "How can the processes of computer-mediated communication be analyzed, described and understood through a natural history, microanalytic, structural approach?" a new analytical instrument that systematically examines the structural properties of CMC via asynchronous online discussion boards is presented. In this approach, the sequence of participant activity within discussion board threads, and the references that allow inferences about who or what a specific message points back to, are mapped in varying ways. In this method, posts, or messages submitted at one time, are understood as meaningful acts that serve as building blocks of the communicative structure within a discussion board thread, or post set. Philosophical research devotes little attention to the intersection of metaethics and applied ethics. If researchers devote any attention to these fields, they study them separately. As far as applied ethics of economic nature is concerned, mainly management and business ethics, there are only few researchers studying them in metaethical context. The present paper attempts to map their mutual relations. It asks if it makes sense to connect philosophical and applied ethics. The second question the paper asks is whether it makes sense to connect metaethics and applied ethics. The paper also presents relations between applied ethics and metaethics.

In the current reality, the issue of leadership requires changes in space and processes. Recently, it is possible to observe an increasing scope and determination of leadership as well as ways to realise it in military environment. The solution is an attempt to find principles of leadership in case of power and influencing as a background for education in this issue. The aim of this article is to draw attention to power and influencing in leadership in the context of the implementation in education. The basic structure of the article consists of two parts: leadership and power and leadership and influencing. In both parts there is finding connection between civilian and military point of view.

Videogames since their conception and especially after the 90', have pioneered depiction and representation of space, in many cases more than any other medium artistic or commercial, thus paving the road for early conceptions of the metaverse. This essay aims to present a series of spatial and architectural, conceptual design breakthroughs brought forth by videogames. Furthermore, these breakthroughs are tied to revolutionary shifts and transformations in players' subjectivity. Space and spatiality in videogames is unavoidably coupled with corresponding attitudes towards perception of space, movement, proprioception and the projected bodily shape of the player. Evolution of digital space genres as revolutionised through videogames is presented in three snapshots: Firstly, 2D scrollers, a model for an infinite linear flow of space and information. Secondly, 3D platform action and RPGs (role-playing games). Thirdly, 3D open world, MMORPGs (massive multiplayer online RPGs) and fully immersive RPGs. This genealogy of early implementations of metaverse-like spatial configurations is argued to have played a crucial role in grooming a new generation of users, workers, and individuals, who could tackle the novel challenges of social spaces of the 21 st century while at the same time being hardwired to embrace a kind of paradoxical, socially exposed individualisation. The new generation of spatially, and often also kinaesthetically, literate subjects, has from a very early age learned that one's presence in space is rarely if ever unmediated. Be it through custom and default characters, avatars, profile pictures, nicknames, aliases, clan names or any other substitutes for a fixed identity and subjectivity videogames have created a novel spatio-subjective archetype. This archetype, whose most abstract expression is simply the avatar, is on the one hand a way of positioning oneself in space and especially types of public space such as fora, blogs, chatrooms and more. On the other hand, it is also a form of emergent subjectivity and a constituent law for the way subjectivity interacts with space around it. Following these insights, extrapolations on the nature and possible developments in the metaverse can be speculated but more importantly, forms of social collectivism and tactics for the formation of meta-tribes can be devised.

Utopian architecture draws imagery from visions of a new society, freed from the bonds considered most relevant in each age. This practice has led to a number of important designs from architects like Étienne-Louis Boullée in the classical era or experiments like Archigram’s in the 60’. The common element in utopian architecture as it is historically conceived and executed is a leap forward: From the present to the distant future, where currently existing problems are but shadows. This logic, however, is not adequate today.One reason is that social problems on a global scale are considered as so complex and hard to solve that the vision of a radically different reality rid of them, does not appear particularly probable. Along with the widespread pessimism regarding the world’s course, is an equally important second problem: Contemporary capitalism constantly accelerates social processes and assimilates an increasingly larger volume of images and outlooks into its own commodity driven logic. This way, the future looks like a slightly altered version of the present, rather than a field of possibilities. In this paper the goal is to present tactics through which architectural design today can produce and enhance utopian proposals that can point towards a different society. Focusing on Foucault’s essay on the literature of Blanchot entitled ‘’The thought of the Outside’’, I explore the possibility of how imagery of destruction can give edge and relevance to a contemporary utopian architecture. The Outside according to Foucault is a toolbox (dispositif) for escaping the socially constructed reproduction of subjects and their identities. In this paper the notion of the Outside is utilized to set the basic parameters of how one might nowadays think ‘’outside the system’’. With the help of Lebbeus Woods’ designs for Sarajevo along with sci-fi imagery, dystopian aesthetics are documented as a tool for utopian design.

In the first part of this paper I discuss the most important ideas of Coenen et al. study about human enhacement (2009), which was very recently elaborated for European Parliament. In the second part I define human essence and human nature as such, emphasizing that human essence is not biological but psycho-socio-cultural and human nature not only bio-psycho-socio-cultural but at the same time physical, chemical and geological. Finally, in the third part I very briefly describe the conditions, under which our human or social form of motion of matter will be definitely substituted by more perfect and "moral" supersocial form of motion.

The main goal of this study was to conceptualize the practices and processes of fashion styling and to clarify the meanings of key concepts in order to enhance understanding of diverse functions in different areas of fashion styling. The qualitative study was based on thematic interviews with fifteen styling experts (11 females and 4 males). The data were first analyzed inductively and subsequently using theory-based content analysis. The analysis revealed five key functions of fashion styling: i) implementing human needs and increasing well-being through personal styling; ii) expressing personal ideas through artistic styling; iii) influencing clients' conceptions of ideal beauty through fashion styling and promotional styling; iv) enhancing the commercial viability of fashion products through commercial styling; and v) self-fashioning as self-representation in fashion blogging and online marketing of styling services. The final analysis revealed four concepts of fashion styling with diverse meanings in relation to art, design, craft, and technology: aesthetic-humanistic, aestheticexpressive, aesthetic-impressive, and aesthetic-exemplary.

The goal of the paper is to present the results of ethnographic research aimed to investigate women’s attitudes toward norms related to the body and biological reproduction. The research was carried out in a rural locality in eastern Slovakia. The obtained data indicate generational differences, which are linked to the social changes resulting from the socio-political development of Slovakia. These differences point to the medicalization of female life cycle which was part of the modernisation of Slovakia in the second half of the 20th century. Women’s statements and behaviour are interpreted in terms of the theory of moral emotions. Explicit expressions of such emotions as anger, disgust and shame serve as important indicators of violation of socio-cultural norms and help to identify moral rules regulating life of local community at certain time. Different elicitors of these emotions in narratives of women of different age point to the change of traditional norms that was a result of the development of public health in Slovakia and medialisation of medical knowledge.

The so far carried out investigations of the language of the mass media in Slovakia – including the publicistic style – has been mostly oriented upon the analysis of media texts/communication units including feedback; media oriented linguistics broadens these aspects by investigating the processes of the birth of the linguistic product (content) and its impact upon media-oriented education and upon developing critical media-oriented literacy. An irreplaceable position within media linguistics in our cultural environment is also held by the publicistic style which can be the starting point the media-oriented linguistics of which can stem from and draw impulses from also in the era of digital media. The contemporary situation and tendencies broaden the orientation of media linguistics by the technical, semiotic and pragmatic aspect which deepen the approach also to publicistic style. The paper also indicates the super-temporality of the works by J. Mistrík’s, who in his work followed the changing society, as well as the reaction of language and functional styles to these changes.

The aim of the paper is to explain the concepts of frame and framing and their placement in the broader interdisciplinary context within cognitive linguistics and discourse semantics, as well as sociology and communication sciences.
