Ein interdisziplinäres Team von Forscherinnen und Forschern untersuchte
zwischen 2019 und 2023 Bohrkerne aus zwei Kleinseen in der Ostschweiz.
Es gelang, Veränderungen der Umwelt sowie den Einfluss menschlichen
Wirkens auf Ökosysteme und Landschaften im Kanton Thurgau während
der letzten 17 000 Jahre zu rekonstruieren.

During excavation works in connection with
the construction of a swimming pool at the
Landhaus Eggert hotel, a pit house of the six
post type was uncovered, together with evi
dence of structures at ground level. From the
evidence of a few pottery sherds, the pit-house
is likely to date from the protohistorical period
(probably the Imperial or Migration period)
and is therefore earlier than the first writ
ten references to the surrounding farmsteads
of the 11th century. Several medieval ceram
ic finds from the ground-level features and
the stray finds from intermediate layers could
be assigned to the period of occupation of the
Wersedrup farmstead, first mentioned around
1100.

El estudio del registro sedimentario holoceno del estuario de los ríos Tinto y Odiel (Huelva) se ha realizado históricamente por medio de sondeos y de afloramientos superficiales. Nuevos perfiles naturales en la Isla de Saltés (La Cascajera) están ofreciendo una nueva perspectiva sobre la génesis y cronología de los depósitos. Para la determinación temporal de estos procesos se llevaron a cabo dataciones radiométricas mediante el análisis de series de Uranio y de radiocarbono. El contraste de los resultados de ambas técnicas ha permitido observar grandes desfases temporales en las series de Uranio, siendo Las edades de 14C son unos 200 años más antiguas que las de U/Th, para las mismas muestras. La contaminación postsedimentaria en estos sistemas abiertos, ha favorecido el rejuvenecimiento de la edad de la muestra, por el continuo aporte al sistema de 234U y 238U. The Bode, which has its source in the Harz Mountains,
changes its course almost at right angles over the Oschersleben Salt Saddle and assumes the Hercynian direction of
the subrosion depressions. According to historical maps,
the river had formed bifurcations within the Espenbruch.
The meanwhile inactive river courses can be visualized in
the digital terrain model (DTM).
With the help of airborne laser scans (ALS), a 昀氀at morphological elevation can be detected directly above the Oschersleben Salt Saddle. It crosses the Holocene 昀氀oodplain of the
Espenbruch in the correct position above the saddle and
is also visible west of the river Bode in the alluvial plane
Großes Bruch. This linear morphological structure is due
to a neotectonic uplift in the crest of the Oschersleben Salt
Saddle. Apparently at the end of the Middle Ages, the elevation of the terrain impeded the water 昀氀ow of the rivers
Bode and Großer Graben. As a result of the backwater, the
Bode upstream has given way to an existing bifurcation.
The existence of periodic tributaries of the Bode in the area
of the Espenbruch can be proven on the basis of borhole
pro昀椀les. In the 昀氀ood plain to the east of the main course,
coarse clastic sediments can be found along the old river
routes under the 昀椀ne-grained cover layers of the 昀氀oodplain.
The river gravels of Bode, characterized by Palaeozoic resin rocks (e. g., Rammberg granite, diabase, lyddite) can be
clearly distinguished from Pleistocene gravels. Their occurrence outside of the recent main course can be evaluated as geological evidence for the historical changes in the
course.

At the present time much attention on the identification and investigation of degraded peatland areas is mainly being undertaken by studies on growing bog plant species, vegetation cover continuity and character. However, it is also understood that to choose the most effective re-cultivation method it is necessary to know the properties of the remaining peat layers and local hydrological conditions. The aim of this study was to discover the characteristics of peat properties and their changes in three differently affected areas of the Lauga Bog. Field work included geological coring and the collecting of deposit samples for further laboratory analysis including loss on ignition (LOI) analysis, determination of the peat density, pH and magnetic susceptibility measurements. The obtained results reveal that peat properties in the Lauga Bog vary in differently affected areas. In the affected areas (Lauga-1 and Lauga-3) the top layer of the peat section has a higher natural density and larger proportion of mineral matter. Whereas a natural bog section is characterised by peat with lower natural density, a higher percentage of organic matter and lower pH is typical for raised bogs.

Riassunto Il turismo geologico viene considerato solo da poco tempo come una risorsa economica soprattutto per quelle aree che sono già state classificate come Parchi Nazionali, Regionali o Riserve naturali. È il caso del Parco della Gola della Rossa e di Frasassi, nelle Marche centrali, che per le sue notevoli peculiarità scientifiche, è stato oggetto di numerosi studi. Assodato il valore paesaggistico ed estetico, è unanime il riconoscimento della quantità e qualità scientifica e didattica delle emergenze presenti nell'area, in considerazione della limitata estensione territoriale, tanto che la Comunità Montana dell'Esino, nel quale ricade amministrativamente il Parco, ha definito quest'area come "Parco geologico". Il Piano del Parco ha dato particolare enfasi agli aspetti geologico-geomorfologici, ipotizzandone una valorizzazione specifica che possa produrre un indotto economico basato sul turismo geologico e naturalistico, associato all'usuale interesse emotivo-semiologico. Vengono descritte, sulla base delle conoscenze scientifiche ed ambientali e sul valore estetico, le peculiarità geologico-geomorfologiche (geositi) che caratterizzano tale comprensorio e che, opportunamente legate da più itinerari dedicati, potrebbero costituire percorsi escursionistici di sicuro valore ed interesse geo-turistico.

SOUND CONCEPT OR MISCONCEPTION To many people, the Sacramento Valley appears as an expansive groundwater basin filled with freshwater. It is also common to conceptualize the groundwater basin as an underground lake or a series of underground rivers that provide water to wells. Are these sound concepts or misconceptions? Recent interpretation of over 150 down-hole electrical resistivity logs from widely scattered locations throughout much of the northern Sacramento Valley has revealed that these simplistic concepts are incorrect. This pamphlet provides a glimpse of ongoing studies of the aquifer systems in the northern Sacramento Valley. The findings are preliminary and will likely improve as further information is gathered. Comprehensive reports of these studies should be available later in 2004.

Die Kontrolle des Bodenabtrages auf dem Gelände des geplanten neuen Sportplatzes von Salzkotten-Scharmede im April 2016 durch Ulrike Rode, Außenstelle Bielefeld der LWL-Archäologie für Westfalen, setzte eine Kette von Ereignissen in Gang, die zur groß ächigen Aufdeckung einer germanischen Hofstelle führte. Lässt man Fundstellen von Metallsondengängern der letzten Jahre außen vor, war der Bereich im Umkreis von ca. 1 km fundleer. Nachdem die Groß ächigkeit und Bedeutung der Fundstelle festgestellt worden war, wurde von der Stadt Salzkotten in Absprache und unter der fachlichen Aufsicht der Außenstelle Bielefeld die Fach rma Eggen-steinExca mit der archäologischen Ausgrabung beauftragt. Der Fundplatz liegt auf einer leicht nach Osten ansteigenden Fläche mit einem sandiglehmigen Boden zwischen dem ca. 1 km entfernten Bach Gunne im Norden und dem ca. 400 m südlich der Ausgrabung verlaufenden Erlbach. Von dem 20.000 m 2 großen Sportplatzgelände wurden nur 3.200 m 2 untersucht, da die übrige Fläche aufgeschottert wurde, daher erhalten bleibt und nur im Bereich der Drainagegräben dokumentiert werden musste. Zu Beginn der Grabung wurde am Westrand der Bau äche ein 4,50 m × 3,50 m großes, noch 0,30-0,40 m in den anstehenden Sand eingetieftes Grubenhaus (Bef. 1) aus der Völkerwanderungszeit freigelegt, aus dem neben Keramik eine Bronzepinzette geborgen werden konnte (Abb. 1). Auf der Zuwegung zum neuen Vereinsgebäude kamen die Reste zweier Rennfeueröfen zutage. Eisenschlacke wurde an vielen Stellen des Areals beobachtet. Die Verhüttung von Eisen dürfte somit von einer erheblichen wirtschaftlichen Bedeutung für den Siedlungsplatz gewesen sein. Auf der Grabungs äche im Ostteil des Sportplatzes fallen drei Befundkonzentrationen ins Auge (Abb. 2). Eine Ansammlung von Gruben und Pfostenlöchern im Norden mit dem Bef. 138 war vielleicht Teil eines Wirtschaftsgebäudes. Weiter südlich liegen vier Grubenhäuser (Bef. 133-136). Noch weiter

Due to its geographic position and geomorphological configuration, Grotta Romanelli acted as a sediment trap since at least MIS 5. The so-called ‘terre brune’ sequence is a deposit mainly of eolian origin bearing upper Palaeolithic artefacts and fossil remains of vertebrate fauna; it was deposited during the Glacial-Interglacial transition and the Holocene. Sedimentology and mineralogy of this deposit are investigated. The stratigraphic sequence provides a promising archive within which both human and climatic impacts can be studied

Geomorphologic, stratigraphic, faunistic, palynological and 14 C analyses were carried out in the area of the mouth of the Garigliano River characterized by two strand plains that are referred to the Eutyrrhenian and the Holocene, rimming two depressed zones separated by the Garigliano River channel. This study depicts the palaeoenvironmental evolution over the last 8200 years and the landscape context at the time of Minturnae Roman colony. Between 8200 and 7500 yr BP, a wet zone occurred in the northern zone, whereas in the southern part, a lagoon developed. During the final transgression stage and the beginning of the sea level still stand (7500-5500 yr BP), a freshwater marsh formed in the northern zone, and the width of the southern lagoon decreased. Between 5500 and 3000 yr BP, the coastal barrier changed into a delta cusp, a freshwater marsh also appeared in the southern part and the river wandered between the twin marshes. Because of local uplift, previously unknown in this area, part of the floor of the southern marsh emerged, and after 4000 yr BP, both marshes became coastal ponds with prevailing clastic sedimentation. A progressive increment in anthropic forcing on the land took place after 3000 yr BP. The Marica sanctuary was built (7th century BC), and the Roman colony of Minturnae was developed beginning the 3rd century BC. The shallow depth of the ponds prevented their use as harbours, and saltwork plants can be ruled out based on the faunal and palynological data. The ongoing infilling of both ponds was never completed, and their reclamation is still in progress.

Archaeological structures are often filled with sediments and may serve as effective dust traps. The physical parameters and chemical composition of archaeological soils in hilltop ruins, ancient runoff-collecting terraces, and cleanout spoils of cisterns were determined in the Petra region in southern Jordan and the Northern Negev in Israel. Different types of ruins are characterized by certain soil structures, but could not be distinguished with regard to substrate composition. This reflects a predominance of aeolian processes for primary sedimentation, while fluvial processes seem to only re-distribute aeolian material. In the Petra region, the physical and chemical properties of all archaeological soils show a significant local contribution from associated weathered rocks. Compared to modern settled dust, archaeological soils in Southern Jordan are enriched with various major and trace elements associated with clays and oxide coatings of fine silt particles. The GIS database of the Holocene sedimentary processes occurred in Balat River Mouth, its evolution and distribution in space and time. The remotely sensed satellite imageries including Landsat TM, Landsat 7 ETM are processed, visually interpreted in combination with GIS data to clarify the Holocene sedimentation, its facies conditions and characteristics. The relationships of Holocene deposits and the interpretation pattern recognition of satellite remotely sensed data are established. The database in GIS environment is created and GIS spatial and attribute data analysis is applied to draw the change of Holocene lithofacies in horizontal/vertical space directions and time in relation to the sedimentary evolution of the coastline. The relation between sedimentary evolution and global sea level change expressed the sedimentary rate and it also describes the process of Land-Ocean interaction in relation with present sea level change. Finally, the paper gives the picture of litho-dynamic characteristics and distribution of lithofacies of Balat river mouth in Holocene. The principal lithofacies are as follows: sandy ridge, mangrove swamp, delta's flood plain, tidal channel and tidal flats.

In Bochum-Gerthe is een schuilgelegenheid voor luchtaanvallen uit de Tweede Wereldoorlog onderzocht en gedocumenteerd. De schuilkelder van het type Deckungsgraben bood de civiele bevolking bescherming bij geallieerde aanvallen. The rst excavations carried out at Herford in 15 years yielded numerous new insights on the origins of the historical centre of the town which grew up around a chapter of nuns founded sometime after 789. The rst results were obtained with regard to the early history of the newer part of the town in the rst two hundred years after its founding in 1224. Seit 2004 werden die Erweiterungen im Kiesabbau der Firma Riedler in der Gemeinde Winklarn, Bez. Amstetten, Niederösterreich, im Vorfeld archäologisch untersucht. Die vorliegende Arbeit präsentiert eine Zusammenschau der bei den einzelnen Untersuchungen gewonnenen Aufschlüsse. Bislang konnten in den Flächen Befunde einer regen Siedlungstätigkeit vom Neolithikum bis in die Neuzeit nachgewiesen werden, wobei die Schwerpunkte in das Neolithikum, in die ältere Eisenzeit und in die römische Kaiserzeit fallen. Besonders hervorzuheben sind in diesem Zusammenhang neolithische Siedlungsbestattungen und eine norischpannonische Hügelgräbergruppe.

The Aleria Del Sale lagoon in Eastern Corsica provides an excellent location for palaeoenvironmental research in order to better understand the palaeogeography of the island's coastline and to disentangle the role of human and natural factors in landscape evolution. A borehole drilled to a depth of 5.30 m was located a short distance from one of the most relevant archaeological sites on the island. Environmental reconstruction methodologies included mollusc identification, sedimentological and palynological analyses combined with robust chronological control provided by 8 radiocarbon dated samples allowing the reconstruction of the coastal lagoon and the surrounding vegetation history over the last 6 millennia. The Aleria Del Sale lagoon was formed around 3500 cal BCE, when sand bars linked to the deltaic progradation of the Tavignano River enclosed shallow marine waters. Pollen data reveals the existence of a semi-open landscape at this time in which human activity was widespread. The open lagoon shifted into a confined lagoonal system around 2200 cal BCE and this change in the feature was coeval with a notable decrease in human disturbance of the area and the end of the Chalcolithic Terrina occupation. The following period saw shrub and woodland regeneration and the brackish environment continued until the 19th century CE. Human activity did not have a significant impact on the vegetation until the Genoan Period. The evolution of the vegetation history and the diverse human activity across the Eastern Plain during the Bronze Age until the Genoan Period is furthermore explored in this paper. The uppermost layers of the lithostratigraphic sequence reflect the transformation of local conditions in response to recent (20th century) drainage operations.

The Netherlands is subject to anthropogenically induced deep-source and shallow subsidence. Deep sources are related to the extraction of hydrocarbons or salt mining activities, whereas shallow subsidence comprise compaction, shrinkage and oxidation of clay and peat under progressive lowering groundwater levels. At TNO-Geological Survey of the Netherlands, deep-source and shallow subsidence are presently investigated separately. Forward and inverse modelling techniques are generally deployed to forecast subsidence caused by deep sources, whereas shallow subsidence is predicted using the high-resolution geological 3-D subsurface model GeoTOP. A new approach is proposed which encompasses forward and inverse modelling techniques and GeoTOP. Such combination will yield a powerful shallow subsidence forecasting model, which would be a critical step forward in analyzing shallow subsidence in the Netherlands on a regional scale. In the present contribution, we sketch the setup of this new approach that combines subsidence measurements, GeoTOP subsurface data, and data assimilation of subsidence with the help of state-of-the-art forward and inverse modelling techniques. The setup uses ensemble technology to catch uncertainties of parameters, different model choices, and implicit correlations. With such a setup, forecasts can be faithfully accompanied with a quality measure that enables to judge its relevance and confidence range.

At Ense-Bremen, 400 features of a Linearbandkeramik settlement were documented, distributed over an area of around 7000 m 2. At least four superimposed house ground-plans attested to the settlement's existence over several generations. The number of Linearbandkeramik sites in the Soester Börde region is continually increasing-evidence of the rst intensive cultivation of the area at the beginning of the Neolithic period.

A rc hä ol og ie in W es tf al en L ip pe 2 01 1 Nur durch die Befragung der Zeitzeugen konnten Details erfasst werden, die ohne ihre Mithilfe nur noch schwer oder gar nicht mehr rekonstruierbar gewesen wären. Auch wenn nur 54 Jahre zwischen dem Abriss und der ersten Grabung liegen, wussten nur die Anwohner von dem Splittergraben, die schon im Krieg in seiner Nähe lebten. Hier zeigt sich, wie wichtig eine zeitnahe Untersuchung derartiger Anlagen ist, um nicht nur auf die rein archäologischen und – wenn vorhanden – archivalischen Quellen angewiesen zu sein. Mit der Untersuchung des Splittergrabens Uferstraße 4 konnte ein Stück Zeitgeschichte aufgearbeitet werden, dass in diesem Umfang in einigen Jahren für immer verloren gegangen wäre.

In the mid-19 th century there were plans to build a railway tunnel in the »Alte Eisenbahn« area between Lichtenau and Willebadessen, which would allow passengers to traverse the Egge mountain range. The project faltered, however, and numerous relics of the former construction site can still be found in the woods. As part of a cooperation project between the LWL Archaeology Unit for Westphalia and the Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel, the site was investigated in 2016 not only by means of excavations but also with the aid of divers. Although the ancient site of Utica has been studied since the 19th century, the location of its harbors remains unresolved as they were buried under sediments as the Mejerda delta prograded and left Utica 10 km inland. Using relief data and a coring survey with sedimentological analysis, we identify the dynamics of the delta's progradation, which produced a double system of alluvial fans. These show that the ancient bay of Utica silted up faster and earlier than was thought, probably before the end of the Punic period. Combined with the radiocarbon dates from coring, this suggests that the harbor lay on the northwestern side of the Utica promontory, communicating with the sea by a marine corridor west of the northern compartment of the delta. As the infilling of the ancient bay progressed, this corridor narrowed until it disappeared completely in the early 5th/mid-6th century A.D., when a peat bog developed on the northern side of the promontory, sealing the fate of Utica as a port. This relative environmental stability ended in the 9th-10th century A.D. when about 4 m of sediment, probably of fluvial origin, covered the peat bog, leaving the site more than 4.5 m above the local sea level.

Coastal wetland-based archives have an exceptional scientific potential to observe past biodiversity changes and identify key thresholds for particular ecosystems facing relative sea-level rise. In this presentation, we focus on the multiproxy analyses (palaeoentomology, palynology and geochemistry) of two 14C-dated cores from Corsican back-barrier wetlands: the Grecu pond located on a low-laying island (S. Corsica) and the Cannuta marsh situated on a deltaic floodplain (N. Corsica). The respectively 7000-and 5900-year sedimentary records from the two sites show contrasted ecosystem trajectories, stemming mainly from their different geomorphological features. Regarding the Grecu pond, by comparing the beetle fauna present on the island today with fossil beetle assemblages, we find that 60% of past wetland beetle fauna became locally extinct because of the increase in salinity caused by marine intrusions. El estudio del registro sedimentario holoceno del estuario de los ríos Tinto y Odiel (Huelva) se ha realizado históricamente por medio de sondeos y de afloramientos superficiales. Nuevos perfiles naturales en la Isla de Saltés (La Cascajera) están ofreciendo una nueva perspectiva sobre la génesis y cronología de los depósitos. Para la determinación temporal de estos procesos se llevaron a cabo dataciones radiométricas mediante el análisis de series de Uranio y de radiocarbono. El contraste de los resultados de ambas técnicas ha permitido observar grandes desfases temporales en las series de Uranio, siendo Las edades de 14C son unos 200 años más antiguas que las de U/Th, para las mismas muestras. La contaminación postsedimentaria en estos sistemas abiertos, ha favorecido el rejuvenecimiento de la edad de la muestra, por el continuo aporte al sistema de 234U y 238U. A set of sand borrow-pits excavated in the Sele Plain southeast of Battipaglia between 200 and 300 meters from the present shoreline (Spineta site), allowed the description of liquefaction features in beach and dune deposits. A rc hä ol og ie in W es tf al en L ip pe 2 01 4 Zusammenfassend erbrachte die knappe archäologische Untersuchung nicht nur die erste Ausgrabung eines eisenzeitlichen Gehöftes im nördlichen Hochsauerlandkreis. Erstmals konnte darüber hinaus ein idealtypischer Standort in der regionalen Siedlungsstruktur verstanden werden. Die Fundstelle ist als Gehöft oder allenfalls als Weiler zu deuten. Das Fehlen von Schlacken, wie sie beispielsweise in Brilon-Madfeld nachgewiesen wurden, zeigt, dass die Siedlung in Winterberg primär landwirtschaftlich ausgerichtet war.
