Digital hiring platforms (e.g., LinkedIn, Indeed) mediate a vast share of global employment, yet exhibit profound dysfunction-stagnant hiring outcomes, eroding trust, and deepening opacitydespite high activity volumes. This paper argues these failures are structural, rooted in a "collapse of perspectives" (Bonhoeffer, 2005), where institutional design privileges the employer-centric viewpoint embedded in economic theory and platform architecture while systematically excluding the worker's perspective. Through a case study of LinkedIn and Indeed, we demonstrate how this collapse produces rationalized irrationality: locally rational decisions that generate systemic instability and mistrust. We conclude by proposing a framework for responsible market design inspired by Bonhoeffer's ethics, grounded in multi-perspective architectures, algorithmic transparency, and restored feedback symmetry to address the structural causes of labor market decline.

AI is ready. But is humanity? Artificial Intelligence (AI) is structurally transforming the world of work. According to a recent analysis by Goldman Sachs, large-scale adoption of AI could generate a 7% increase in global GDP over the next decade. But this economic momentum comes with a potentially dramatic impact on employment: the same research estimates that approximately 300 million jobs could be automated in developed countries alone, especially in administrative, financial, and legal sectors. In Italy, a Censis-Confcooperative report highlights that by 2035, six million workers risk being replaced by AI, while another nine million will see their roles radically transformed. This is an epochal threshold. And so one fundamental question arises: when most professions are automated, will humanity be able to rethink itself?

With the advent of globalisation, both government and private sector seek professionalism among their employees. For individuals who practice professionalism in their career, they understand that it encompasses soft skills in it. A complete mastery over soft skills enables an individual to shine in his/her career. By examining key indicators such as popularity, feedback volume, percentage of positive feedback, and the number of projects, the research provides valuable insights for both freelancers seeking work and clients in need of cost-effective solutions for one-time engagements or staff augmentation.

Sharing economy and growth of gig workers draw attention of HR manager to develop strategies for dynamic work environment. The purpose of this study is to identify motivational factors which fascinate freelancers and engage them to stay in this industry. This study is also an attempt to extend concept of value proposition in context of freelancing which provide base for long term freelancer-platform relationship. 358 freelancers participate in an online survey, and an adapted questionnaire was used for data collection. Reflexive-formative model with repeated item technique was used for measurement of Freelancer Value Proposition (FVP). Results indicate that Economic Value (EV), Autonomy Value (AV), Developmental Value (DV), Hedonic Value (HV) and Social Value (SV) significantly and positively contribute in Freelancer Value Proposition (FVP). Managerial implications are suggested to improve each value dimension and overall Freelancer Value Proposition (FVP).

Crowdsourcing constitutes an innovative pattern for enhancing collaborative works based on challenges open to professionals and amateurs willing to contribute to a specific task launched through a web platform or a specific company website. Literature on crowdsourcing is emergent, and much is still left understudied. In this work we propose to distinguish between ideation and content production contests, trying to look for specific features of the crowd that lead to win the one or the other type of contest. Moreover, we take in account the importance of belonging to a community in order to win the contests. To conduct the exploration, we led a case study, taking the crowdsourcing platform eYeka as object of the research. eYeka is the leader in the crowdsourcing sector, being used above all for fast moving consumer goods companies. We first collected data about the 23 most used crowdsourcing platforms, isolating the functioning and performance of the eYeka platform, second we analysed in detail the contests launched by eYeka in 2017. Starting from a wider analysis of platforms, we conducted a descriptive research aiming at highlighting the main trends of the field. After having performed a statistical examination, we were able to provide some original results on the features leading to successful contribution to crowdsourcing platforms.

Platform workers face the paradox of skill building: they bear full responsibility for addressing increasingly intricate, unpredictable, and undervalued skilling demands, while simultaneously grappling with limited access to structured, guided skill-building opportunities. While prior studies within the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) community acknowledge the paradox, they do not provide much insight into these worker's experiences. And, the contemporary literature provides limited insight into how workers' professional and personal circumstances such as occupational position and family arrangement leads to different sorts of outcomes. To address these gaps, we bring attention to the evolving nature of skill building experiences among platform workers. In this paper, we (1) expound upon four major shifts in skill building experiences in platform-mediated work, (2) highlights the significance of demographic heterogeneity as a lens to unravel the intricate narratives of skill building experiences in platform-mediated work, and (3) discuss three research implications for the HCI community. Our work contributes to the emerging body of skill literature in the HCI and cognate community by (1) providing a comprehensive elaboration on the evolving conditions surrounding skill building among platform workers and (2) offering insights for future research endeavors pertaining to supporting worker-centered skill building experiences. Instacart, TaskRabbit, Mechanical Turk, Care.com, and others use cloud-based technology to "match" workers with consumers (Vallas 2019)-has produced a type of labor with contested status under U.S. employment law. The explosion of "platform capitalism" (Srnicek 2016) is part of a broader transition from standard employment protections toward "flexible" work arrangements, including contract, temporary, and part-time employment, in the United States and elsewhere since the 1970s (Beck 2000; Kalleberg and Vallas 2018; Summers 1998). Some commentators see possibilities for liberation in flexible work arrangements, since such workers can more freely choose their hours and reduce their commitments to single employers. A few go so far as to argue that the loosening of the bonds between workers and employers may make possible a world in which work is altogether less central to people's lives and life projects, allowing for new pursuits and new forms of solidarity (Beck 2000)-recuperating an older utopian vision (Marcuse 1964). In theory, workers engaged on platforms can choose when, where, and how much to work; and they can work for multiple platforms at once to reduce their dependence on any one, like the Uber driver who also drives for Lyft and Juno (Sundararajan 2016). This article challenges positive views of the assumed relationships between skills, productivity and rewards in self-employed digital freelancing. It suggests that the upfront investments made by freelancers to build up positive platform ratings are not necessarily recouped in the form of increased autonomy, guaranteed work or more lucrative 'gigs'. Drawing on 38 autobiographical narrative interviews and 12 audio working diaries with diverse online freelancers in Europe, we show how the low barriers to enter platform work provide opportunities for those with limited work experience and other commitments outside of work. However, the intense competition between an ever-expanding pool of (both skilled and unskilled) task freelancers within 'digital tournaments' results in the colonisation of worker's free time, and the normalisation of unpaid labour. This implies that 'free time' for freelancers is largely an illusion. Furthermore, the significant 'sunk costs' that freelancers make in terms of time, platform-specific skills, reputation and networks are not fully recovered and cannot be transferred to other platforms.

A aproximação da inteligência artificial do cotidiano de pessoas comuns pode trazer impactos em diferentes aspectos. Um de grande importância está relacionado ao mercado de trabalho e à substituição de trabalhadores por inteligências artificiais, o que poderia reduzir a presença humana no mercado de trabalho. A partir de microdados da RAIS agregados anualmente por ocupação no nível municipal e a aplicação de um índice de vulnerabilidade das ocupações quanto à inteligência artificial, foi realizada uma análise sobre o mercado de trabalho formal brasileiro. Em um primeiro momento, foi realizada uma análise descritiva para identificação de quais as ocupações mais vulneráveis e sua importância dentro da força de trabalho formal no Brasil. Os primeiros resultados indicam que as ocupações mais ameaçadas estão entre aquelas com maior demanda por escolaridade e especialização técnica, representando uma parcela pequena do mercado de trabalho. Posteriormente, a partir de métodos de predição foi possível mensurar o possível impacto da ampliação do uso da inteligência artificial sobre o nível de emprego e a desigualdade de renda do trabalho. Foram aplicados o Modelo Autorregressivo Integrado de Médias Móveis) e uma técnica de Machine Learning (Random Forest), utilizando o índice de impacto de inteligência artificial como preditor. Os resultados indicam que o nível de emprego no mercado de trabalho formal brasileiro não será impactado negativamente pela ampliação do uso dessas tecnologias nos curto e médio prazos. Digital labour platforms act as intermediary agents between users and are imbued with the power to determine the rules of interaction within their own digital ecosystem. As the labour market has become increasingly integrated into the platform economy, digital enterprises have been able to use their concentration of power to experiment with new structures of labour regulation and management. The key transformation of labour by platform enterprises is the fragmentation of labour contracts into minute by minute tasks, with noteworthy implications for our understanding of human capital investment in the digital age. As individuals are required to sell their abilities as micro-skills such as photo-tagging and copy editing, long-term human capital investments such as higher education are devalued. These long-term assets are replaced by highly volatile and short-term human capital assets such as reputation scores and platform metrics. This paper will investigate these new forms of human capital, exploring how they are held hostage by platform enterprises to lock users in and structure how labour is practiced in the new digital economy.

This article presents a study based on government communication regarding the creation of the Dubai and United Arab Emirates Ministry of Happiness. Under the scope of this paper, from the news analysed, we have chosen that which reflects the main objectives of the creation of the Dubai and United Arab Emirates Ministry of Happiness. Using the technique of content analysis, through the use of webQDA software, the aim was to understand how the Government communicated those objectives. Consequently, the aim was to understand whether there was discursive consistency between the content of the text analysed and the message that the Government wished to convey. The results enabled us to identify emphasis on the Government's objective of creating genuine and authentic happiness for the whole of society through the creation of this Ministry.

Purpose - This article explores how the fourth industrial revolution is transforming the labour market by demanding new professional skills and by digitalizing jobs done by the human resources of companies. The purpose of this study is to explore the dimensions of Freelancer Value Proposition (FVP) and Freelancer Job Stress (FJS). This study provides insights about the factors which create value for freelancers and also sheds light on the factors which cause stress to freelancers while freelancing with the help of an online platform. that the 'digitalization' of society and economy is an unstoppable accelerating process, which can and should be shaped in favour of workers. Furthermore, it is argued that digital technologies offer potential for low-carbon transformation of energy and mobility systems, the
circular economy and the protection of ecological systems. Yet it is not very clear how far digitalization can be linked to societal goals and whether it can be placed at the services of a global transformation towards ecological sustainability.It will be argued that a digitalization of the economy (and the society at large) is still a concept of what could be rather than what is. given. Instead we should consider all the challenges and risks of this trend and then consider, whether we should resist or foster the trend. Labor relations are the term used to define the process between employers and employees, management and unions in order to make decisions in organizations. The decisions taken refer to wages, working conditions, hours of work, and safety at work, security and grievances. Why is an important topic for gig economies?
Technology has driven the emergence of the gig economy, creating more seemingly flexible opportunities for people to earn income, such as through ride-sharing services like Uber and carpool, or freelance labour matching platforms such as up work. From these new business models have emerged unique business connections which do not often fit traditional labour organization. For example, workers with tasks that resemble those of regular employees’ may be disguised as “self-employed” individuals, “freelancers” or “entrepreneurs” who do not have access to the same rights and benefits legally due to regular employees, including freedom of association and collective bargaining. While providing ease in the delivery of needed services and offering flexible economic opportunities especially to those who are unable to commit to the rigidity of regular employment (such as mothers and homemakers), the gig economy has also presented serious challenges to upholding labour rights by being linked with precarious work, enforced casualization, uncertain hours, poor pay and involuntary overtime.
Gig economy is defined as comprising ‘gigs’, offered by those that need the work done, in terms of ‘demand’; and those who undertake the work, or ‘supply’. ‘Gigs’ themselves refer to the work done as part of the gig economy. As a phenomenon that is still in flux, there are differing opinions of the nature and expanse of the gig economy, but this definition is the most targeted. Other definitions may discuss the gig economy as part of the ‘sharing economy’ including activities such as renting out one’s own home or rooms; micro-enterprise work offered on market platforms such as Etsy, up to being as broad as including any work described as ‘insecure’, meaning any work not included in ‘permanent fulltime employment’ status such as temporary work, contract work, or casual work.

Digital transformation in the global higher education industry determines the future roadmap to a sustainable education management strategy. This research paper aims to develop a qualitative model that advocates how digital transformation as a propelling force could be used to build competitive advantages for universities. Building competitive advantage is a relative, evolving, and important concept in strategy formulation. In recent years, specifically in the education industry, the notion of building competitive advantage is challenged by global phenomena such as digital transformation globalization, information exchange, digitization and social media in most of the global industries. These phenomena have collectively made the process of building competitive advantage rapidly changing, short-term and contextual. These findings aid the evolution of strategic management practices in universities by providing empirical insights in determining the impactful changes and their connection to evolutionary learning. Creativity enables human intelligence to compete with artificial intelligence, which means that the development of the creative abilities of future specialists is very important for preserving the anthropocentrism of society. The law should contribute to minimizing these risks. Since most professionals are involved in labor relations, labor laws can help develop creativity. For example, digital control restricts the employee's right for privacy, while creativity is a skill better developed by a free person. Therefore, it is necessary to limit the use of digital sensors and neurosensors to monitor employees on a legislative level.

Purpose - This article explores how the fourth industrial revolution is transforming the labour market by demanding new professional skills and by digitalizing jobs done by the human resources of companies. A further aim is to postulate on new professions which will, in the future, be in high demand and the skills that will be required to fulfill those job non-robotized profiles. In this document, we offer a review of recent literature on the future of work. This review was commissioned by The Alan Turing Institute for the purpose of informing the Institute's research strategy aiming to further data science and artificial intelligence research to address real-world problems. Using a critical review method, the report synthesises key findings about the future of work focusing on three main areas: broad research findings, emerging research directions, and innovative data science research directions. New technologies and digital platforms have ushered in a rise of gig, freelance, contract, and other types of independent work. Although independent workers and the gig economy as a whole have received plenty of attention, little research has examined the heterogeneity of work characteristics among different independent work opportunities, specifically as it relates to the participation of women in this workforce. Existing data indicate that some digital platforms are more male dominated, whereas others are more female dominated. What accounts for these differences? In this paper, we empirically examine the heterogeneity of work within independent work opportunities in relation to female participation by analyzing work characteristics in the United States from the Occupational Information Network (O*Net) database that reflect greater temporal flexibility, which has been shown to vary across occupations and to attract more female workers. Our findings suggest that women in the independent work context do self-select into the types of independent work jobs that reflect greater temporal flexibility, as is the case for women working in traditional employment. However, our findings also reveal that the way in which the existing literature measures temporal flexibility in traditional work settings may not be the same as the way it is measured in the context of independent work. We discuss the implications of our findings for public policy and labor laws.

Nordic working life studies have mostly focused on the precarious aspects of work mediated via online labor platforms. We follow a different approach and examine the potential of such work to benefit professionals by enhancing their job quality and learning. This qualitative, practice-based study applies the concept ‘co-creation’ to examine how a social form of creating value takes place in Upwork macrotask projects. It then investigates how platform features shape opportunities for co-creation. The data comprise interviews of 15 freelancers residing in Finland. The findings suggest that co-creation is possible in macrotask projects, but the platform does not seem to actively support co-creation. This paper provides insights into the discussion of job quality at platform work and how co-creation on platforms might be developed to support the Nordic labor market model.

Our study presents a new tool, Reputation Agent, to promote fairer reviews from requesters (employers or customers) on gig markets. Unfair reviews, created when requesters consider factors outside of a worker's control, are known to plague gig workers and can result in lost job opportunities and even termination from the marketplace. Our tool leverages machine learning to implement an intelligent interface that: (1) uses deep learning to automatically detect when an individual has included unfair factors into her review (factors outside the worker's control per the policies of the market); and (2) prompts the individual to reconsider her review if she has incorporated unfair factors. To study the effectiveness of Reputation Agent, we conducted a controlled experiment over different gig markets.
