Friendship Theory

This article examines the entanglement of German social work with National Socialism (1933-1945), focusing on the Soziale Frauenschule Aachen (SFSA) as a case study, and reframes its history within Michel Foucault's concept of biopower and Giorgio Agamben's theories of bare life and the state of exception. Drawing on archival sources (Bundesarchiv, Arolsen Archives) and Tim Ernst's research (2021, 2024), the study reveals how social work, traditionally a humanitarian practice, was co-opted into Nazi biopolitical strategies to optimize the "Aryan" Volksgemeinschaft while excluding or eliminating "undesirable" populations. The National Socialist People's Welfare (NSV), under leaders like Erich Hilgenfeldt, deployed programmes such as Winterhilfswerk and Lebensborn to foster "racially valuable" life, while social workers, including SFSA graduates, enforced surveillance and exclusion, marking Jews, Roma, and the "asocial" as bare life subject to internment or death. The SFSA, a Catholic institution, navigated Gleichschaltung through pragmatic adaptations-adjusting its curriculum to NSV mandates and tolerating völkisch sympathies among leaders like Maria Offenberg-until its 1941 closure, a contested moment of resistance or insufficiency. Postwar silence under Offenberg's leadership obscured this complicity, perpetuating biopower's subtler legacies. By situating social work within a totalitarian biosphere, this analysis exposes its dual capacity to care and control, arguing that the Nazi era exemplifies biopower's extreme logic: "making live and letting die." The study urges contemporary social work to confront these historical continuities, offering a critical lens on the profession's ethical vulnerabilities under authoritarian regimes.

War veterans' associations had a significant public voice in Weimar Germany as they claimed to represent the demands of those who had fought for the country. Divided into national, regional, and local branches, veterans' associations were often an important pillar of the local fabric of towns and villages.

On January 13, 1935, a referendum was conducted to determine whether the Saar Basin should remain under League of Nations administration, returned to Germany or become part of France. More than 90% voted that it should be reunited with Germany. After the plebiscite was completed, a new wave of antisemitism was precipitated by radical elements in Germany, especially the SA (Sturmabteilung), the initial paramilitary wing of the Nazi Party, which played an integral part in the rise of Adolf Hitler. As Hitler sought a more moderate approach to governing, their influence eroded. In an attempt to validate their continued need to exist, they revived their combativeness and radicalism. On July 15, an unparalleled surge of antisemitic destruction occurred in Berlin. Shop windows were broken, which became a common occurrence. On the night of July 15, 1935, historian Moshe Gottlieb noted, approximately 200 German thugs seized,

Reciprocal peer coaching (RPC) as a form of peer-assisted learning has an important part to play in formative assessment strategy. The primary objective of this article is to evaluate the effective use of RPC as a formative assessment strategy. A multi-method phenomenological research design was employed using purposive sampling. Seventy students completed a qualitative focused questionnaire survey asking them to reflect on their experiences of reciprocal peer-coaching relationships. Content analysis of student perceptions resulted in the emergence of key themes including; RPC relationship process, the learning process and cognitive skills development. Powerful learning gains were reported by participants, and were characteristic of a successful RPC relationships. Overall the RPC relationship can greatly enhance deep level learning and aid the transfer of theory into practice to inform academic debate on the use of constructivist methodology for enhancing the use of formative assess...

Desde los inicios de la producción de largometrajes de animación hasta la actualidad, la escultura ha tenido un papel capital a la hora de abordar el diseño de los personajes en tres dimensiones, dado que las esculturas de pequeñas escala, que internacionalmente se denominan maquettes, ofrecen una ayuda inestimable para valorar su potencial visual desde todos los ángulos. Este trabajo se ha ido perfeccionado a lo largo del tiempo hasta convertirse en un rol indispensable dentro de cualquiera de los grandes estudios del cine animado. Las siguientes páginas, redactadas por el incansable cronista de la animación stop-motion, Adrián Encinas, darán cuenta de uno de los pasos creativos más espectaculares en el proceso de producir los grandes largometrajes de animación de todos los tiempos.

En la sociedad occidental se considera que el trabajo y el deporte son espacios masculinos y es a través de ellos donde los varones forjan sus amistades (Wasylkiv y Clairo, 2018: 1). En el lado de la feminidad, las amigas comparten emociones y confidencias (Migliaccio, 2014: 5). La amistad, por tanto, es una herramienta más para la división de género. Este tipo de relación es muy común en los contenidos audiovisuales destinados al público infantil porque cualquier individuo desarrolla amistades desde muy temprana edad. En el presente estudio de género nos adentramos en el análisis de las amistades de los protagonistas de los largometrajes Pixar estrenados entre 1995 y 2015 con el objetivo de definir en la masculinidad y la feminidad a través de la amistad.

God has beautifully created our tongue and safely placed in the mouth. What a secured place! It is the place in which nothing can pollute. The speech produced from the sweet tongue must be sweeter and man should not make it vain. The best discourse must be based on the right judgment and profound thought. The discourse should be general and not directed against particular person. Thiruvalluvar and Francis Bacon have beautifully expressed the notions on speech in their writings. The present paper focuses on the values of speech in the select couplets of Thiruvalluvar’s Thirukkural and Francis Bacon’s Essays.

Over the last two decades, María de Zayas's La traición en la amistad has been transformed from a little-known and hard-to-find curiosity to a truly canonical play, available in multiple editions, anthologies, and translations, and included in both undergraduate and graduate reading lists and course syllabi. To be sure, this revival is in part related to Zayas's popularity as a novelist, although readers of Zayas's prose fiction will find that the presence of what Lisa Vollendorf has called ''María de Zayas's early modern feminism'' (Reclaiming the Body) is comparatively obscure in the play. Whereas the didactic notion of exemplarity as it was understood in the seventeenth century is central to the structure and discourse of Zayas's two novela collections, her only extant theatrical piece seems more ambivalent and ambiguous about what the playwright would have her audience learn. Scholarship on the play has thus far presumed of it a mode of exemplarity that resonates comfortably with the more explicitly stated purpose of Zayas's prose fiction, pressing the play's inherent ambiguity into the service of a protofeminist reading of all cultural production by women in the period. A fresh look at the play and its current reception among scholars suggests a state of the scholarship on early modern women writers that needs to be opened up to alternate methodologies and points of view. In a mini-project funded by the Subject Centre, we reviewed the educational literature on peer support and used focus groups to explore students’ ideas of academic and critical friendship. We report on our findings, make some connections with philosophical writing on friendship, and offer some steps that institutions might take to foster academically fecund friendships among philosophy students.

A pesar del asombro con que los graciosos de la comedia Valor, agravio y mujer, de Ana Caro de Mallén, se referían a los avances de las mujeres en el panorama poético del Madrid de mediados del siglo XVII 1 , la obra dramática de este siglo producida por mujeres que se ha conservado es bastante escasa. Concedamos que doña Ana se dejó llevar por el entusiasmo al incluir a las mujeres entre el sinnúmero de poetas que se albergaban en la corte y al referirse al más de un millar de poetisas contemporáneas que florecían en Italia. Sin embargo hay que conceder también que, en lo que atañe a la poesía dramática, las obras escritas por mujeres debieron ser, con todo y su carácter muy minoritario, algunas más de las que se han conservado, al menos por lo que sabemos de las obras perdidas. Nada nos consta de las doce comedias que Mariana de Carvajal afirmaba haber escrito en el prólogo a sus Navidades de Madrid y noches entretenidas 2 , y tan sólo conservamos dos de las muchas que Rodrigo Caro atribuía a Ana Caro de Mallén, y que se representaron "en Sevilla y Madrid y otras partes, con grandísimo aplauso" 3 . Y eso que estos son dos ejemplos de escritoras reconocidas y consideradas en su época .

ES - María de Zayas y Sotomayor es una de las autoras más importantes del Siglo de Oro español, y sus dos colecciones de novelas cortas («Novelas amorosas y ejemplares» y «Desengaños amorosos») han sido objeto de estudio por muchos de autores. Sin embargo, su única obra de teatro conocida, «La traición en la amistad», no ha recibido apenas atención por parte de los especialistas. En este ensayo se pretende desenterrar esta pieza desde el trasfondo feminista que marca toda la obra de Zayas, a través de León, el gracioso de «La traición en la amistad».

EN - María de Zayas y Sotomayor is one of the most relevant feminine authors of the Spanish Golden Age, and her collections of short novels («Novelas amorosas y ejemplares» and «Desengaños amorosos»; in English «Amorous and Exemplery Novels» and «Disenchantments of Love») have been studied by lots of authors. Nevertheless, her only known play, «La traición en la amistad», has not received the same attention than her other works. This essays attemps to unearth this theatre piece, taking into account the feminist background that characterizes Zayas’ works and with the help of León, the donaire of «La traición en la amistad».

ensayo "Calderón und die Malerei", el tratado de Calderón de la Barca titulado Deposición a favor de los profesores de la pintura (1677). 1 Gracias a este ensayo pionero y a la difusión del tratado, sabemos que la "natural inclinacion" (91) de Calderón por la pintura se refleja en las numerosas referencias que aparecen a lo largo de su obra y en el vínculo personal que estableció con ella. Sabemos también que perteneció con Velázquez a la corte de Felipe IV y que poseía, según el inventario de Claudio Coello, una amplia colección de no menos de 119 pinturas y dibujos. 2 Esta "inclinacion" lo condujo a elaborar consideraciones teóricas acerca del estatuto del pintor, al que consideraba un artista y no un artesano. 3 La intención de Calderón al escribir este tratado era, en principio, legal (exonerar a los pintores de los impuestos que pesaban sobre los artesanos), por esa razón consideró necesario proponer su definición de lo que entendía por el arte de la pintura: "un casi remedo de las Obras de Dios, y emulación de la Naturaleza, pues no crió el Poder cosa, que ella no imite, ni engendró la Providencia cosa que no retrate" (91). La aparente ingenuidad de esta definición desaparece una vez que se la inserta en un sistema ideológico que rechaza la herencia platónica que despreciaba las emulaciones artísticas por considerarlas "sombras de sombras". Calderón propone la pintura como "[a]rte de las artes, que á todas las domina, sirviendose de todas" (92) y rescata la idea medieval de un Dios-Pintor (Deus Pictor) de su propia creación, sugiriendo tal vez que representar dramáticamente era, como lo hacía el arte de la pintura, emular a Dios, vale decir, una manera recomendable de avanzar cristianamente en el camino de la salvación. 4 Inicio mi ensayo mencionando este rasgo de la poética de Calderón para señalar el poderoso vínculo que existía entre el teatro y la pintura en los Siglos de Oro, 5 y para subrayar un desequilibrio con el escaso interés de la crítica por las representaciones pictóricas en las comedias de autoría femenina. 6 El extenso corpus de la obra calderoniana justifica, además de esta desigualdad, la temeridad

The Baroque´s writer María de Zayas reflects in her narrative and dramatic work the defense of a revaluation of the female figure. Above all, she claims for a change in the conception of the female sex and its role in society. In this way, she demands that women have the right to education and freedom to choose their way of life according to their wishes and needs. Therefore, María de Zayas should be considered a key author in the genealogy of spanish writers that began with the mystical writer Teresa de Cartagena and created a speech that would connect with subsequent feminist proposals.

Thiruvalluvar’s Thirukkural is a collection of sacred couplets. It is considered to be a masterpiece written on the subject of human thoughts. It has also been in par with the Holy Bible and with John Milton’s Paradise Lost, it has also been compared with other great books of many other religions. Thiruvalluvar’s views in Thirukkural is considered to be in a reasonable tone, and it also has hints of revolutionary ideas, such as terminating the system of caste. Thirukkural, the most celebrated work, has been an immense influence over the Tamil life and culture since ithas great views over the insights of our day to day life, making it to be universal. This paper aims to discuss the couplets translated by G. U. Pope’s on the chapters namely Learning and Friendship from the Thirukkural to be compared with the Book of Proverbs from the Holy Bible and with the essay Of Friendship by Francis Bacon.

Gabains vom 12.11.1981an den Verfasser dieser Zeilen -zeigen die fürwahr noble Gesinnung "der Meisterin". Nur eine Spur davon hätte den Schüler von seinem Pamphlet zurückgehalten, gerichtet gegen ein Buch, dessen Entstehung die Grande Dame der deutschen Turkologie von den Anfängen bis zur Fertigstelllung mit regem kritischem Interesse und oft bekundeter Freude begleitet hat. Honorigkeit kann man nicht einfordern, wohl aber die Einhaltung von Qualitätskriterien wissenschaftlicher Veröffentlichungen: Richtigkeit der Daten, Überprüfbarkeit und Ausgewogenheit des Urteils, auch Redlichkeit und Wahrhaftigkeit. Kurz, es kann verlangt werden, daß sine ira et studio gehandelt wird. Wenn einer, der im Geschäft ergraut ist, all das mißachtet, muß er cum ira , ja summa cum ira am Werk gewesen sein, weshalb auch immer. Die Rede ist von der "Rezension" des Klaus Röhrborn [künftig: R(ezensent)] zu Dieter Maues [künftig: V(erfasser)] Alttürkische Handschriften. Teil 1 ... Stuttgart 1996 [künftig: AtüHs I] in dieser Zeitschrift [= Zeitschrift der Deutschen Morgenländischen Gesellschaft] Bd. 152, 2002, S. 202-203. Über den Ton möge sich der Leser selbst ein Urteil bilden. Immerhin sei beiläufig die archaisch-dualistische Sichtweise des R herausgestellt: hie das Reich des Lichts (R) mit den Attributen "gut", "richtig" usw., dort das Reich der Finsternis (V) charakterisiert durch die Eigenschaften "nachlässig", "inkosequent", un"professionell", "falsch" etc., eindrucksvoll verstärkt durch Quantoren wie "viele" und "häufig". Die meisten Behauptungen sind nicht oder spärlich belegt; ihre relative Glaubwürdigkeit wird also aus dem Wahrheitsgehalt und der Stichhaltigkeit dessen, was überprüfbar ist, deduziert werden müssen. Bringt man alles Referierende und Unkontrollierbare in Abzug, bleibt herzlich wenig übrig. R behauptet S.202 Anm.1: "Der erste Satz des Vorwortes ... ist unzutreffend". Woher R das Recht nimmt, eine biographische Notiz des V anzuzweifeln, ist sein Geheimnis. So hatte es R im übrigen schon in "Maue 1981" (gemeint ist V-s Habilitationsschrift) S. VII als Gutachter und "Freund" (Uig.Wb. Lfg.1 S. VII) gelesen und keineswegs beanstandet. Nun ja, es sind seither über 20 Jahre ins Land gegangen. Da können sich die Erinnerungen verschieben. Nur, solange noch Zeitzeugen dasind, die R-s Geschichtsklitterung Fakten entgegenstellen können, sollte man es mit der Wahrheit genauer nehmen. Subtil interpretierend fährt R fort: "und erweckt überdies den Eindruck, als wäre das Alttürkische auch vom Nicht-Fachmann mit der linken Hand zu erledigen". Ein solch lockerer Umgang mit Texten, ist, wie sich der Leser des Vorworts leicht überzeugen kann, bestenfalls mit Kaffeesatzlesen vergleichbar: man glaubt zu sehen, was man sehen will.
