French to English Translation

Against historically determined conventions that helped launch her career as a translator of French literature in the mid-twentieth century, this article reconsiders Louise Varèse's translation of Arthur Rimbaud's Illuminations, published with New Directions in 1946, as activating a range of cultural, historical, and critical interpretations that are not always anticipated by her source text. I read Varèse's claims about rendering the "prismatic and protean quality" of Illuminations in her Translator's Note, alongside Marjorie Perloff's theory of Rimbaud's "poetics of indeterminacy," and translation Studies scholar Matthew Reynolds's prismatic model of translation, to reframe Varèse's much-lauded "accuracy" as an approach that instead highlights the interdependent relationship between Rimbaud's French poetic text and its English translation, while also foregrounding Varèse's historical and cultural intervention. Through a close textual analysis of "Side-Show," Varèse's English translation of Rimbaud's poem "Parade," and Varèse's revision of the poem from 1957, I demonstrate the ways Varèse's translation "activates" Rimbaud's language for her English readers while thematizing the secondary nature of her translation.

This is the first ever translation (to my knowledge) of Galart de Montjoie's 'Histoire de la conjuration de Maximilien Robespierre' into English. I have added hyperlinks and some footnotes here and there for research purposes. It can be found on the internet for public view in its original Middle French from which I have translated. This is a revised new edition, overseen by the author himself, for improvement, published in 1796, via the bookseller MARET, at Maison Égalité, cour des Fontaines, n.° 1081. He is a contemporary to the French Revolution and have here focused on one of the most central figures of the french revolution, Maximilien François Marie Isidore de Robespierre. Get a glimpse of the Reign of Terror and the many conspiracies and poli-"tricks" involved in the three National Assemblies. The third of which was the National Convention wherein Robespierre was unleashed upon Paris through his medium of the Comité de salut public. This is not a read for children or sensitive souls.

This study assesses the significant impact of post-editing on translators’
creative decision-making in the translation process.  The main concerns
revolve around the quality of the final translation product and the freedom
of the translator to exercise creativity in post-editing as opposed to relying on
direct Machine Translation output.  While some peers easily adapt to this
era, others consider machine translation as an enemy that will eventually
overpower human translation. The study adopts a qualitative, descriptive,
and metanalytic approach using a cross-sectional case study design that
makes use of a questionnaire, an ex-post facto/quasi-experiment to assess
creative translation craftmanship in MTPE and HT. To assess the
expectations and attitudes towards machine and post-editing translation
platforms, the study draws its insights from creativity translation literature
and the interpretive theory in translation studies. The study posits that
preserving the artistic and cultural nuances of the source text, while allowing
the translator’s creative input to shine is a crucial factor in translation and is
also an essential element in perpetuating human translation. The results of
this study have implications for the development of the creative potentials of professional and trainee translators.

Cette étude a été menée dans le but de révéler les effets des exercices structuraux sur la réussite scolaire des élèves de JS2 sur l'enseignement et l'apprentissage de la grammaire française. Au cours de ce travail de recherche, nous avons traité trois questions de recherche et leurs hypothèses relatives. Un test de rendement écrit sur la grammaire française (WATOFG) a été administré afin de recueillir des données. L'instrument a été validé par trois experts en éducation linguistique et en mesure et évaluation de l'Université du Nigeria, Nsukka. L'instrument a donné un coefficient de fiabilité moyen de 0,74 en utilisant la méthode de Kudder-Richardson. Les données ont été analysées à l'aide du score moyen, des écarts-types et de l'analyse de covariance (ANCOVA). Ils ont ainsi été présentés, analysés, interprétés et discutés. Le résultat de l'étude a montré que les étudiants qui ont appris la grammaire française en utilisant les exercices structuraux avaient d'excellents résultats scolaires par opposition aux étudiants qui ont appris en utilisant la méthode conventionnelle (grammaire-traduction). Encore une fois, les étudiantes ont obtenu de meilleurs résultats que les étudiants de sexe masculin enseignés avec des exercices structurels. De plus, la combinaison des exercices de genre et de structure n'a produit aucun effet d'interaction sur la réussite scolaire. Enfin, l'enseignement et l'apprentissage de la grammaire française à l'aide d'exercices structuraux ont ensuite été recommandés comme technique d'enseignement efficace. Ainsi, il devrait être mis à profit par les professeurs de français car il favorise la rétention et l'automatisme dans la reproduction des structures grammaticales apprises. Il soutient également l'intérêt des apprenants de la langue française.

Translation is regarded as an activity in which a message is rendered or transmitted from SL to TL. The general perception in this multi-step translation process is that the author produces the ST and the outcome (translation) is achieved by the translator. Nonetheless, within the framework of self-translation, the author and translator are the same. This study aims to compare, contrast and analyze self-translation of Fin de Partie written in French into English as Endgame by Samuel Beckett in line with the playwright's identity as a self-translator. The biography of Samuel Beckett, the play's historical background, literary style and analysis, characters and characterization, drama translation techniques as well as the Theatre of the Absurd are also described to enlighten the analysis. The ST and TT of the play are compared and classified within the framework of translation procedures and strategies proposed by Vinay and Darbelnet in their book Comparative Stylistics of French and English. The findings reveal that the exogenous bilingual playwright and translator Samuel Beckett conveys equivalence within liberty.

Dans le présent article, nous entendons attirer l'attention sur la complexité de la traduction scientifique et technique. A partir de l'analyse d'un cas concret de traduction d'un texte de mathématiques rédigé en anglais, nous essayons de montrer que même si un enseignant maîtrise tout-à fait la langue anglaise, il peut avoir des difficultés à traduire un texte qui ne relève pas de la langue courante, et que la collaboration du mathématicien est nécessaire pour obtenir une bonne traduction.

The bluest eye – translation as an art
From the outset of his work Larson (1988) warns us that “meaning-based translation [should] make every effort to communicate the meaning in the natural forms of the receptor language” and that “literal translations may be (...) of little help to speakers of the receptor language who are interested in the meaning of the source language text” (17). Translation has often be considered more as an art than a science, in that several possible “good” translations may be crafted of a same source text, and defining text quality attributes like “style” is more a matter of art than science. For instance in a translation of one single short sentence from African-American author Toni Morrison’s novel (1974) “The Bluest Eye”, French seasoned translator Jean Guiloineau shows two contrastive examples of non-literal translations, one that conveys naturalness and one that is detrimental to the style in the target language:
Original: her eyes are full of sorrow
Literal: ses yeux sont pleins de chagrin
Guiloineau’s: elle a les yeux noyés de chagrin
Gloss: she has the eyes drowned in sorrow
In this example “drowned in sorrow” is more natural than “full of” in French, and more idiomatic; whereas replacing “her eyes are” by “she has the eyes” is a change that only results in a mundane if not awkward rendering.
As it turns out, a systematic comparison of two translations by two different translators (Guiloineau and the author of the present paper) of a same, 543-words excerpt from the above mentioned novel helps highlight differences of choice in staying literal or not in the translation of words or idioms, and shows that the choices made by either translator are far from being all fruitful in terms of accuracy, naturalness or style.
Of 51 detected instances of choices to not be literal (in either translations), actually only 23 resulted in a better effect (compared to the mirror translation), in terms of accuracy (6), naturalness (17) and/or style (6). Instead, 28 led to translation weaknesses (less natural: 2, poor style: 6) or worse, mistakes (inaccurate: 22). Conversely (and thus Larson’s warning is still valid!), 9 phrases were translated literally, generating weaknesses of naturalness (7) and/or style (3), and even a mistake (inaccurate: 1).
Luckily in many cases, both translations of a same sentence look equally satisfying, conveying all meaning elements in a natural way and fair style - though they may have chosen different forms in the target language. Translation is definitely an art!
Additionally, one may thing that if it were a science, or at least a mature science, it should be easy to formalize it in the form of a computer program. But looking at an automated translation (using “Google translate” as the software) of the same text, one finds that the outcome has not only more weaknesses, but also many more mistakes, and even gross mistakes.
A tentative to detect whether the mistake come from an insufficient lexicon, or a defective grammatical analysis component, proved inconclusive – as many mistakes may be thought as having a dual origin:
Original: The deep purple falls
Literal: Le profond violet tombe
Google’s: Les chutes violet profond
Gloss: The falls purple deep
Human translation: Le soir profond tombe
Gloss: The evening deep falls
In this short sentence the tool fails to identify the verb (“falls”) and produces a noun phrase with no verb, but it is probably due to weaknesses of several components – “purple” may not appear as a possible noun in the lexicon? And “deep purple” certainly not in its figurative sense “evening”? But still “falls” has probably been found to be either a 3SG form of the verb “to fall”, as well as the plural form of the noun “a fall”, so why did the disambiguation component fail to choose a grammatically correct sequence?
This triggers two research questions – a basic one, “is Google-translate representative of the current state of the art of automated translation?”, but more interestingly, “if not, how does best-in-class automated translation programs work, today, where are the domains where human translators still perform better, and how to reduce them?”
