Film Economics

This article examines a range of film techniques and technologies present in contemporary workplaces, with functions ranging from vocational education to executing production tasks. Taking as its starting point the typical protest of twentieth-century militant filmmakers, for whom the ban on filming in the factory stood for a political strategy of the ruling class, the article proposes that, at a time when film techniques and technologies have become crucial to the human and non-human perceptual regimes behind the production of wealth, a new field is opening up for cinematic creation. Cinematic creation now has the potential to deterritorialize the economic category of work by introducing aesthetic experimentation into the heart of production systems. An example is proposed of a project that could stand as an avant-garde for a cinematic labour activism adapted to the twenty-first century (and the Anthropocene). This project is an example of the emergence of cinematic works in fields not usually considered the domain of cinema.

Bu çalışmayla, 2000 sonrası Türk sinemasında Adana ve Adanalıların temsiline odaklanılarak, bu temsillerin nitel bağlamlarını incelemek amaçlanmaktadır. Yerel basın, Adana’da çekilen dizi ve filmleri genellikle olumlu karşılasa da, bu yapımlardaki klişeleşmiş anlatılar sıklıkla eleştirilmiştir. Özellikle Adana’nın İstanbul merkezli bir bakış açısıyla, suç ve şiddetle özdeşleşmiş bir taşra olarak sunulduğu belirtilmektedir. Bu bağlamda, çalışma Adana’nın mekânsal ve kültürel ögelerinin nasıl temsil edildiğini, Adana’nın ve Adanalı karakterlerin hangi bağlamlarda yeniden-üretildiğini ve bu temsillerin nasıl açıklanabileceğini soruşturmaktadır. Araştırmada, 2012–2023 yılları arasında çekilen 24 film tematik analiz yöntemiyle incelenmiştir. Tematik analiz, filmlerde tekrar eden motifleri, mekânsal kodları ve karakter dinamiklerini belirlemeye yönelik bir anlatı analizi yöntemi olarak kullanılmıştır. Çalışmada “taşra”, “suç”, “ataerki”, “şive”, “lezzet” ve “sıcak” olmak üzere altı ana tema belirlenmiş, bu temalar Adana’nın sinemadaki temsilleriyle ilişkilendirilmiştir. Bulgular, Adana’nın popüler sinemada ağırlıklı olarak suç anlatıları, eril ve maço karakterler ve sert dramlar için kullanılan bir arka plan olarak kodlandığını göstermektedir. Buna karşılık, şehrin sanatsal, akademik ve kültürel çeşitliliğini yansıtan anlatılar oldukça sınırlıdır.

This study explores the informal economic practices of Yeşilçam during the 1960-1970 period through literary representations, using Orhan Kemal's novel Yalancı Dünya as an alternative source for film historiography. Scholarly inquiry into the Turkish film sector's functioning has long been hampered by a lack of records and documentation, and consequently a scarcity of historical data, and by the methodological challenges of studying informal economic practices. Against this backdrop, this study looks to realistic literary texts like Yalancı Dünya for valuable historical and sectoral insights that can help fill the gap left by the absence of other sources. Employing content analysis, a qualitative research method, the novel Yalancı Dünya is systematically examined and thematically categorized under six headings: "filmmakers, producers, and businesses, " "investors, " "regional exhibitors, " "loan sharks and promissory notes, " "individuals, " and "places and spaces." In addition, sectoral criticisms from the period are incorporated using data from cinema magazines and newspapers. The findings suggest that Yalancı Dünya offers significant insight into the informal structures of Yeşilçam; that its author, Orhan Kemal, being closely familiar with the industry, conveyed these realities in vivid detail; that his narrative aligns with the critiques of the sector; and that, in this respect, the novel holds potential as a valuable resource for the historiography of Turkish cinema.

Bu araştırmayla iletişim ve kültürel çalışmalar bağlamında, Adana ve Adanalıların 2000 sonrasında Türk sinemasındaki işlenişinin nicel yönlerini soruşturmak amaçlanmıştır. Çalışmada, en az bir sekansı Adana’da 2012–2023 yılları arasında çekilen 32 filmin Türkiye dağıtım ve gösterim pazarındaki yeri incelenmiştir. Çalışma kapsamında öncelikle, ilgili dönemde Adana’da çekilen 32 filmin verisi Box Office Türkiye ve IMDB veri tabanlarından derlenmiştir. Filmlerin yapım yılını, gösterim tarihini, hafta bazında gösterim sürelerini, biletli seyirci sayısını, hasılatını, yönetmenini, yapım şirketini ve dağıtımcısını gösteren veriler tablolara aktarılmıştır. Bu veri sayesinde filmlerin gösterim süresi, biletli seyirci sayısı ve hasılatındaki artış ve azalmalar takip edilmiştir. Bu filmlerin verileri Türkiye’de çekilen diğer filmlerle kıyaslanarak, 2012 sonrasında Türk film ekonomisinde Adana filmlerinin durumu ve Adana’da çekilen filmlerin dağıtım ve gösterim ekonomisindeki yeri hakkında nicel bilgi üretilmiştir. Çalışmayla, Adana’da çekilen anaakım filmlerle art-house filmler arasında dağıtım ve gösterim bağlamında önemli farklılıklar olduğu görülmüştür. Bununla beraber Adana’da çekilen filmlerin ekonomik hacmi, Türkiye dağıtım ve gösterim pazarında belirgin bir büyüklüğe ulaşmıştır. Çalışma aynı zamanda Adana’nın film yapım alanında da önemli bir ekonomik potansiyeli olduğunu göstermektedir.  Bu nedenle, şehrin bu potansiyelini yaratıcı endüstriler alanında değerlendirecek yeni akademik çalışmalara ve sektörel projelere ihtiyaç vardır.

Cinema is a major cultural stake in France of the Fifties, even if film industry is in crisis. The number of produced films increases, but the frequency of attendance was in progressive decline from 1947 onwards until 1952 when audience figures reached their lowest since the Liberation and the public votes by plebiscite films from other countries (American and Italian in particular). The Blum-Byrnes agreements, signed in 1946, accentuated this decline. Prenant comme terrain d'observation le fantastique, les auteurs ont tenté de pénétrer le sens que donnent les individus à la sérialité dans le champ de l'auteurisme cinématographique en répertoriant les outils de jugement mobilisés pour mesurer la valeur des objets. Le rejet du genre fonctionne comme une forme singulière du raffinement esthétique offrant à observer une véritable distribution sociale des goûts. Ainsi, en dépit d'un corpus relativement important allant des films de Cocteau à ceux de Ozon, en passant par les oeuvres de Cocteau, Tourneur, ou Rollin, la question de l'existence d'un « cinéma fantastique français » n'a jamais été tranchée par la critique savante de cinéma quand bien même des intellectuels comme Mac Orlan en proposaient dès les années vingt des définitions rigoureuses. D'abord identifié par les critiques français dans le cinéma expressionniste allemand, puis dans le cinéma d'épouvante anglais et aujourd'hui dans le cinéma horrifique américain, le genre fantastique au cinéma n'en finit pas de traîner une géographie mouvante semblant peu concerner une production française identifiée par les connaisseurs comme riche de près de quatre cents longs métrages. Cette instabilité définitionnelle permet dès lors d'enregistrer les registres de justification des communautés d'acteurs ayant tenté de conférer au genre fantastique une existence propre au sein du cinéma français. Cet ouvrage retrace les efforts qui furent menés par ces intermédiaires (spectateurs ordinaires, critiques, programmateurs, revues, festivals, etc.) pour la reconnaissance d'une catégorie d'observation considérée, jusqu'à une période récente, comme des plus improbables. De nombreux travaux d’inspiration sociologique ont ete menes ces quinze dernieres annees sur les disputes, controverses ou crises identitaires touchant la culture en s’inspirant des modeles de Becker, Boltanski et Thevenot, de Chateauraynaud et Torny ou de Latour. Le cinema est plus que jamais, en France, une affaire d’Etat. En effet, le modele francais de politique culturelle se caracterise par une importante intervention publique en ce qui concerne le domaine des images (cinema et television). Quatre principales missions caracterisent ce modele: la reglementation; le soutien a l’economie du cinema et de l’audiovisuel ; la promotion du cinema et sa diffusion aupres des publics; la conservation et la valorisation du patrimoine cinematographique (auquel il convient d’ajouter les questions d’education liees a l’approche artistique du cinema). Pour comprendre cette montee en puissance de l’action publique dans le domaine du cinema et les enjeux de pouvoir qui en decoulent, il est interessant de revenir sur les principales etapes de son histoire, car si l’affirmation d’une politique culturelle est aujourd’hui une evidence, la necessite d’une intervention permanente de l’Etat pour soutenir le secteur du cinema n’est pas toujours allee de soi. Ce colloque sera l'occasion de croiser plusieurs disciplines et plusieurs champs de recherche autour de la thématique des Territoires du Cinéma. De nombreuses recherches ayant été produites sur le thème du cinéma, quatre axes de recherche seront retenus et développés sur chacune des quatre matinées. Les organisateurs du colloque ont choisi d’aborder l’examen des territoires du cinéma en croisant les constats et analyses dans une logique multidisciplinaire. Ainsi, nous retiendrons des thèmes dans lesquels s’exprimeront des recherches liées aux territoires de l’art, de la géographie humaine, des industries culturelles et de leurs représentations dans notre société. This article examines the cinephilia of film downloaders between the end of the Napster era (the first P2P network shut down by US authorities in 2001) and that of MegaUpload, shut down in 2012 by New Zealand authorities. This decade has been characterized by the gradual disappearance of the technological barriers that have long hampered the downloading of large files, in tandem with the spread of ADSL and the rise of streaming 1. Few studies, however, have looked at downloading and streaming from the perspective of the sociology of consumption, considering these content appropriation practices as a means of determining a trend in cinephiles' taste for the cinema object. On the basis of a qualitative survey, we look at the motivations behind downloading and streaming, relating them to the emergence of new cinephilic behaviours ("niche" and "rarity" cinephilias). Today, these indicators converge to suggest that downloading films is a way of appropriating images that has become commonplace, with few differences from other uses of cinephilia consumed on the big screen.

De l'art cinématographique à la création audiovisuelle : produire du cinéma d'auteur international et des séries TV haut de gamme en Europe Cette recherche explore l'hypothèse d'un changement de paradigme esthétique dans le domaine du cinéma et de l'audiovisuel en Europe, entre l'émergence du cinéma d'auteur dans les années 1950 et celle des séries TV haut de gamme dans les années 2010. Elle examine à cette fin la manière dont le geste de production cinématographique et audiovisuel se reconfigure à l'époque contemporaine, en réponse aux évolutions structurelles de la filière depuis le milieu du XXe siècle et en relation à la « révolution numérique ». L'approche retenue articule deux démarches méthodologiques différentes et tente de caractériser deux « cultures de production » particulières : celle du cinéma d'auteur international et celle des séries TV haut de gamme européennes. La production de films d'auteur internationaux est appréhendée à partir d'un cas d'étude singulier, centré sur un producteur français emblématique ; la production de séries haut de gamme européennes est analysée au moyen d'une enquête par entretiens semi-directifs menée auprès de trente-huit professionnels européens. Les deux enquêtes sont complétées par une analyse sociohistorique de la filière, s'appuyant sur la littérature scientifique et la presse spécialisée. En plaçant l'expérience des producteurs au fondement de l'analyse, la thèse met finalement en perspective deux paradigmes esthétiques majeurs qui informent la production contemporaine d'images animées.

Werner Herzog est connu comme réalisateur allemand de documentaires et de fictions, mais il est aussi auteur de deux oeuvres à lire comme des journaux intimes : Sur le chemin des glaces (1978) et Conquête de l’inutile (2004). Le premier retrace le périple parcouru à pied par son auteur quand il apprend la mort à venir de Lotte Eisner, mort qu’il tâche de conjurer par la marche et l’écriture ; le second est rédigé durant le tournage de Fitzcarraldo au cœur de la forêt amazonienne. Il s’agira, dans l’essai qui va suivre, de comprendre comment ces deux ouvrages peuvent se lire au prisme du cinéma, tout en restant des objets autonomes dans leur forme littéraire. Werner Herzog passe de la pellicule à la page, de la caméra au crayon, et s’improvise auteur tout en restant réalisateur. Bien loin d’un conflit entre deux médiums, c’est un trait d’union qu’il tisse subtilement en gardant à l’image et à la page l’empreinte de ses rêves les plus fous.

Werner Herzog is known as a German director of documentaries and fiction, but he is also the author of two works that can be read like diaries: Of Walking in Ice (1978) and Conquest of the Useless (2004). The former recounts the journey the author took on foot when he learned of Lotte Eisner’s impending death, a death he tried to ward off by walking and writing; the latter was written during the filming of Fitzcarraldo in the heart of the Amazon rainforest. In the essay that follows we shall explore how these two works can be read through the lens of cinema, while remaining autonomous objects in their literary form. Werner Herzog moves from film to page, from the camera to the pencil, becoming a writer while remaining a director. It is not a chasm, but a hyphen between the two mediums that he subtly draws, leaving the imprint of his wildest dreams on both image and page.

The rise of dizis, Turkish drama series, and their circulation around the world has generated a growing news media and academic interest in the history and structure of "Turkish content." RETURN OF THE ZOMBIES Associated with glamour and status, creativity and entrepreneurship, Hollywood now personified a protagonist in its own story, even as its doppelgangers in New York provided the crucial financial foundation. Throughout the golden age of cinema, the studios recreated low-budget jungles, castles, and other faraway lands, while a fantastic force of mummies, vampires, and zombies departed hallowed Hollywood in a scheme to dominate all media entertainment. The guaranteed double booking of these cheap filler films with their stock settings and characters offset any financial risks for their creators. 24 Having dominated the land, Hollywood mastered the labor HOME OF THE ZOMBIES Of course, the idea that there is a force so dark that it feeds off the bodies of the powerless in a quest for immortality has been a motif in contemporary popular culture and fiscal policy. Both owe a debt to Hollywood and its modus operandi, which, in turn, owes a debt to a city that inspired an imaginative essayist by way of Cincinnati. Lafcadio Hearn, fan of occult and fable alike, came to New Orleans in 1876 seeking good stories and national audiences. He found both through his creative depictions of voodoo, a hybrid of various black religious rituals with colorful tropes born straight from the writer's desire for a place that was unlike all others. His tales of funerals, ghosts, and the undead conjured a potent image of an American city that was completely distinct-neither North nor South, neither East nor West-inventing "the notion of Louisiana, more specifically New Orleans, as idea and symbol. " 32 It would seem logical that the first travelers seeking out authentic voodoo rituals soon followed. 33 Along with George Washington Cable, Hearn, and other professional romantics of the place, the late-nineteenth-century chroniclers of New Orleans created the basis for a cultural economy built on the labors of authors and artists, playwrights and performers, as well as the industrial organization of publishers, printers, and publicists. That the first Vitagraph film-exhibition hall in the United States would be located in 1896 at the foot of Canal Street, which was an artery of the city's commercial heart, should be no surprise given the already thriving pulse of the theatrical sector there. 34 Sponsored by an elite class of philanthropic patrons, and with the backing of the largest newspaper chains, New Orleans's arts scene produced visions of an authentically distinct city that sold pottery and papers

The economic model for Arab cinema is broken. Despite a dramatic increase in film production in the last decade, spurred by increased funding from within and from without, as well as by encouraging participation of Arab films in renowned film programs and festivals the two remaining legs of product delivery—distribution and exhibition—are failing the promise of such production by underserving Arab audiences. Considering the potency and populist appeal of normatively constructed films, rigorous study of the causes and ramifications of such failing would be in order. Yet, though transnational cultural, political and economic forces have  described and attenuated Arab filmmaking since the colonial epoch, a new phenomenon has manifested and grown since around the beginning of this century—an Arab cinema support network of funding, investment and showcasing, primarily in the Persian (or Arab if you prefer) Gulf region. However, as cultural critics have long observed, cultural production instrumentally takes place within the confines of ideological and theoretical models. I herewith propose that a web of intersecting and intervening economic and political forces has evolved in the film industry within and across the twenty-two Arabic speaking nations, a trans-Arab cinema.

Le geografie del consumo audiovisivo in Italia, in particolare quelle dei primi vent’anni del nuovo millennio, qui oggetto di uno studio sistematico, mostrano un altissimo grado di eterogeneità. Il libro interroga i dati di visione regionali dei film in sala – sia italiani sia d’importazione – e quelli dei film trasmessi in televisione e della serialità originale generalista, alla ricerca degli elementi testuali che producono i maggiori sbilanciamenti di consumo.
Indagare le geografie del consumo audiovisivo significa illuminare il potere delle immagini e delle storie, e permette di rivelare il grado di frammentazione dei consumi culturali e della cultura stessa del paese. Department of Defense, as well as each individual branch of the military, the Centers for Disease Control, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation have exercised strategies to advance their goals and raise the popular esteem of their agency. Government efforts to influence popular culture, however, also occur at the local level, as individual states and cities issue policy initiatives aimed at attracting Hollywood's film and television shoots. Film production tax incentives are the most prolific of these policy initiatives, with 35 US states currently joining nearly every Canadian province and numerous other municipalities around the world in subsidizing Hollywood filming activities in their locales. The opportunity to advance a locality's visibility in the iconography of global culture while simultaneously attracting local jobs is the frequent justification for these costly incentives. A frequent filming location for global Hollywood, Louisiana provides a case study to show the dubious nature of these justifications (and incentives) within the intersecting film policy efforts of city and state governments. 1
