Ephemeral art

E l conjunto palaciego del Buen Retiro [Fig. ] ha sido objeto de numerosas investigaciones que, sobre todo, a lo largo del último medio siglo han logrado precisar la existencia de una singular tensión dialéctica entre el valor simbólico/representativo de alguno de sus aposentos frente a la modesta estructura arquitectónico-constructiva global. Dos aspectos que, sin embargo, están íntimamente ligados a la historia y recepción de este espacio siendo imprescindible comprender las motivaciones que determinaron el desarrollo de ambos. 1 Por otro lado, en las fuentes contemporáneas a la edifi cación y en la mayoría de los estudios críticos actuales, podemos comprobar que, de hecho, la iniciativa arquitectónica tomada por el conde-duque de Olivares se había limitado a la edifi cación de un nuevo aposento palaciego que debía exaltar la fi gura política del monarca y de su dinastía por medio de las decoraciones palaciegas (cuadros, esculturas etc.), 2 dejando los semblantes arquitectónicos relegados a un plano secundario y subordinados a los aspectos protocolarios, así; infl uyendo en reiterar la supuesta, y ya muy discutible y tópica, 3 «austeridad» de la corte de los Austrias españoles. De tal manera que, el Palacio del Buen Retiro [Fig. ] no se edifi có como un conjunto homogéneo bajo un proyecto arquitectónico previo, sino por medio de un proceso de ampliaciones y yuxtaposiciones progresivas que empezaron desde el pequeño aposento real anexo al Monasterio de los Jerónimos que gozaba de patrocinio real desde 1528 para la jura de lealtad de las cortes de Castilla al heredero al trono. Una circunstancia clave a la hora de entender las líneas propulsoras del proceso de ampliación en el que, evidentemente, la representación fi gurativa y ceremonial de conceptos como magnifi cencia y decoro tuvieron que tener un papel central, determinando, a lo largo del pro-4. Un proceso que empezó por iniciativa del conde-duque posteriormente al nacimiento del príncipe Baltasar Carlos, hijo de Felipe IV e Isabel de Borbón, el 17 de octubre de 1629 y cuyo plazo fi nalizaba el 7 de marzo de 1632, fecha prevista para la ceremonia del juramento. Por estas razones era necesario no dejarse escapar la ocasión de la jura. Olivares actuó con rapidez metiendo al frente de las obras Giovan Battista Crescenzi, ayudado por Alonso Carbonel, ambos personajes cercanos a su entorno y de mucha más confi anza que el arquitecto de corte Juan Gómez de Mora. La rapidez constructiva fue la característica principal de estas obras edilicias en las que se privilegiaron los objetivos estratégicos de Olivares frente a la solidez constructiva. Una circunstancia que marcó el destino de todo el conjunto para los siglos siguientes, como tendremos ocasión de comprobar a lo largo de este estudio. Olivares pudo contar con dos enormes ventajas en este sentido: la conocida austeridad edilicia de los edifi cios de los Austrias y la distribución modular de aquellos mismos edifi cios; cf. C. Blasco Rodríguez, El Palacio del Buen Retiro de Madrid. Un proyecto hacia el pasado, Madrid, 2001, p. 116. 5. Una circunstancia que permitió construir los diferentes aposentos del Buen Retiro como módulos independientes y cuya edifi cación podía yuxtaponerse a las estructuras anteriores sin problemas, casi como si te tratara de quintas escenográfi cas. El primer paso fue la ampliación de la crujía anexa al claustro de los Jerónimos en 1632. En enero del año siguiente se realizó la edifi cación del llamado Cuarto Real, que comprendía el Cuarto del Príncipe o Galería de Toledo. Podemos considerar estas obras aún en el marco de la simple ampliación del aposento real en el Monasterio de los Jerónimos, sin embargo, en la primavera de 1633 es cuando se dispara el proceso edilicio, como confi rman los despachos que Bernardo Monanni, secretario de la embajada del Gran Duque de Toscana, remitía a Florencia. En ellos se hacía especial hincapié, por un lado en el gran número de obreros y albañiles que estaban trabajando en el Retiro, y, por otro, en el continuo transformarse del proyecto inicial según un criterio expansivo de los espacios palaciegos a expensas de la calidad de los mismos; Carta del 9 de septiembre de 1634

With the start of 20th century, growing numbers within societies have emerged to contribute the political, social and economic dimensions of modern life as democratisation and industrialisation have broaden their influence. Moreover, the extent of social and cultural changes throughout the 20th century have gradually exhibited their inevitable influence on almost all forms of arts especially on painting. Especially within the second part of the century with the rise of popular culture accompanying the increasing mass media coverage, consumerism, societys’ openness to political manipulation, industrialisation, social issues associated with emerging urbanisation and unfulfilling and mechanised labour relationships have soon reflected their influences on the conception of the artistic imagery and especially on modern painting.
This study aims to analyze the inevitable changes caused by the emergence of Pop Culture on modern painting and it aims to examine the underlying reasons how the images of painting has been transformed through the effects of social, intellectual and cultural movements in 20th century. In order to achieve its objectives, this study evaluates the social and cultural environment that has been led to mass/pop transformation in the society and it examines the journey in which image has been transformed into various forms in terms of significant art movements such as Cubism, Abstract Expressionism, Dadaism, Pop Art, New Dadaism, Video Art and Digital Art. The significance of this research causes mainly from the rarity of researches that analyzes the position of image within a period of time in the art history, especially addressing the past century.

Aux prises avec la nostalgie d'un passé que je n'ai pas connu et avec des souvenirs imaginés, j'ai pu observer dans mon environnement immédiat un phénomène de perte des savoir-faire et des techniques de fabrication traditionnelles. Par la constitution d'un héritage technique personnel, ce travail de recherche-création constitue une reprise de possession du geste manuel dans un espace intermédiaire inhabité entre passé et présent. Ce mémoire dresse un parcours historico-artistique qui prend ses bases au XIXe siècle, passe par la période minimaliste et fait un rapprochement avec l'héritage moderne. D'abord est expliquée ma nostalgie grâce à une compréhension romantique du sentiment de l'éphémère, où interviennent la période impressionniste en peinture et l'arrivée de la photographie. Grâce à l'ethnologie est non seulement exploré le phénomène de perte des savoir-faire, mais également celui de la régression de la main, utilisée comme outil depuis le fondement de l'humanité. Dans un contexte actuel, cette recherche s'insère dans un retour au traditionalisme marqué par la révolution industrielle, tel qu'a pu le souhaiter William Morris avec ses créations. À travers le minimalisme, la ligne aplatie et sans vie devient l'arête d'un volume chargé d'une symbolique. Enfin, l'art de la fibre, qui connaît de plus en plus de popularité, ouvre une voie d'investigation quant à la mémoire des matières. Ensuite, sont relatées les étapes d'un processus personnel de création. À travers les pratiques d'Anselm Kiefer et de Jérôme Fortin, le mémoire présente aussi quatre paramètres opératoires : la méthode par associations libres de souvenirs, la pratique de l'attente et de l'expectation par la marche, le journal poïétique et les expérimentations en atelier. Aussi, il est démontré comment mes préoccupations plastiques se réverbèrent dans la forme de mon mémoire et comment les thématiques de l'effacement et de la trame se sont manifestées au fil des expérimentations. Grâce à des mots ayant le préfixe « re-», la question du renouveau des techniques est interrogée sous l'angle de la récupération culturelle et de l'apport de la technologie dans le traditionnel. De l'éphémère à la répétition, les expérimentations réalisées au cours de la maîtrise exposent un parcours logique qui met en lumière le travail final de l'exposition. Enfin, ce mémoire est soutenu par un travail pratique de deux ans en atelier duquel ont résulté cinq projets exposés dans POINTS DE REPÈRE | matières sensibles au Centre national d'exposition de Jonquière. Il se termine par l'explication de ces propositions artistiques qui passent par la sculpture, le bas-relief, la photographie numérique et la vidéo, et les constats tirés à la suite de leur mise en exposition, notamment l'apport sensible du technologique dans un processus davantage matériel transcrit par des matières de type fibre.

Jamini Roy was one of the eminent artists of India, who was more famous for his indigenous style of art; the paintings of Jamini Roy have the enormous intellect of acquiring aesthetic attention. There are ranges of characteristics contained in the painting of Jamini Roy and each characteristic draws considerable attention visually and aesthetically, in which one of the significant styles is expressly come out from his paintings, that is applying large eyes in every face of the character. This artistic feature of applying large eyes in every character of Roy's painting unfolds a new significant research gap. Hence, purpose of the current study is to investigate on the particular characteristic in-depth to collect the valid reasons behind the quality. The research will be occurred based on secondary data, with additional descriptive research methodology that will be applied for the justification in a legitimate manner. The study aims to explore an extreme observation on the significance of great artist Jamini Roy and his work and the study will also lend a hand to the future researcher for farther exploration in the research area.

This contribution outlines how successive research projects have contributed to the national digital research infrastructure supporting Open Science and FAIR use of oral history focused on artworks and their care. These projects have enabled a research collaboration of the University of Amsterdam with DANS-KNAW, the Foundation for Open Speech Technology, the National Institute for Sound & Vision (NISV), SURF, the University of Twente and many Dutch art museums. In addition to the interviews with artists and conservators that have been made available over the past years, the OH-SMArt Deposit Application for Oral History at DANS-KNAW is in use. Moreover, a collaborative virtual research environment to prepare the material with automatic speech recognition and correction software is planned to be integrated in SURF Research Cloud, linking SURF Research Drive and DANS-KNAW repository services for FAIR use for a more efficient workflow. Finally, the OH-SMArt Reflexivity Tool is being developed for CLARIAH's Media Suite, hosted by NISV, to record users' interpretations of the source materials revealing different perspectives, with the aim to improve research quality when using archived oral history data for research and conservation decision making, for example. Overall, the projects succeeded in building a fruitful network for the advancement of FAIR digital archiving in humanities research. Not only has a sound deposit pipeline been established to significantly facilitate archiving and publishing of oral history data, but more fundamental issues have also been identified in the collaboration between different disciplinary cultures that require further attention. These include different conceptions of FAIR data management when dealing with audiovisual interview materials about art and museum practice, and wider access to the national research infrastructure by museums and cultural heritage institutions, calling for continued research.

In Cristelle Baskins's recent monograph, Muley al-Hassan, the Hafsid king of Tunis (r. 1526-43) and vassal to Charles V (r. 1516-66), finally gets his due. Long eclipsed by hegemonic histories of his Habsburg contemporaries, Muley al-Hassan commands the center of Baskins's narrative of cultural entanglement and territorial contestation in the early modern Mediterranean.

This essay explores how British painter Francis Bacon used photographic material in his creative process, focusing on the chaotic yet highly personal archive found in his London studio at Reece Mews. It examines how Bacon's collection of photographs — often torn, painted over, or heavily worn — reflects a dynamic interplay between preservation and destruction. The author discusses the significance of these manipulated images as tools in Bacon’s artistic practice, highlighting how they represent both memory and loss. The essay also addresses broader archival questions: how institutions deal with damaged, ephemeral, or fragmentary materials, and what such objects can tell us about artistic intent and the boundaries between documentation and creation.

Este volume reúne uma seleção de estudos cuja versão seminal
foi apresentada no XII Congresso Internacional da Society for
Emblem Studies, realizado na Universidade de Coimbra, de 25
a 30 de Julho de 2022. Cada capítulo propõe uma abordagem
diferenciada ao vasto domínio da emblemática, estimulando
novas perspetivas de pesquisa. A obra explora, assim, as conexões
com a iconografia, dá a conhecer a aplicação de fontes
emblemáticas na cultura material, discute o uso didático e/ou
propagandístico dos emblemas e reflete sobre os desafios de
publicar manuscritos e edições digitais de livros de emblemas.
O último contributo procura antever –questionando as convenções– o futuro dos estudos de emblemática.

While the category of 'Sacred' relates to the self-manifesting, affective 'reality', and collective rituals separating it from the everyday 'profane' world, the idea of 'spirituality' refers to individual or community journeys often expressed through inventiveness and creativity. Pardhan-Gond paintings, created by mainly by some of the self-made artists from the Pardhan clan of the Gond tribe in Central India since the 1980s, reflect a deep tribal-spiritual yearning amidst gradual secularization and loss of traditional bardic rituals. The noteworthy presence of 'darkness', both in literal and figurative ways, in these paintings symbolizes a complex freedom of perception at the haptic level, encompassing rich textures and miniscule motifs. This 'darkness' is sign of both creativity and a sense of burden for tribal artists, as their works are exploited in the urban art markets, beyond their aesthetic-spiritual concerns.

This article delves into the intricate interplay between ephemeral vital matter and ecological continuums through the eco-aesthetic art installation 500 Roses, 5 Circles, 5 Weeks. Informed by the philosophies of Deleuze and Guattari, Merleau-Ponty, Heidegger, and Loren Eiseley, along with Jane Bennett's insights on vital materialism, the work positions itself within a transient, participatory public space that gradually decays and dissolves. These temporary aesthetic manifestations challenge the traditional binaries of life and matter, reintroducing the experiential essence of the ephemeral into the lexicon of contemporary art. In doing so, they prompt a rethinking of permanence, emphasizing a sense of impermanence grounded in our connection to and use of the environment. This exploration reveals intimate interconnections between art, poly-matter forms in nature, and the themes of abundance and transformation, underscoring how decay and ephemerality contribute to a broader ecological continuum. Ultimately, the installation serves as a vital reminder of our interconnectedness with the transient beauty of the world around us.

Die Begeisterung für den Fernsehturm scheint keine Grenzen zu kennen. In urbanen Räumen ist das Motiv beinahe allgegenwärtig: Sie tauchen auf in Hotels, Bahnhöfen und Einrichtungshäusern, in Bushaltestellen wie Restaurants und in der Werbung, sie zieren Erscheinungsbilder von Firmen und Veranstaltungen. Für Kitsch und Souvenirartikel aller Art müssen Fernsehtürme herhalten, sie zieren sowohl Kugelschreiber als auch Kinderspielzeug, Kerzen und Weingläser und machen noch nicht einmal vor Bettwäsche Halt; denn immer dort, wo eine Nachfrage ist, ist auch der Kommerz nicht weit. Zeit sich diese Erfolgsgeschichte des Motivs einmal näher anzusehen

La obra de arte en el siglo XX se caracteriza por una transformación onto-
lógica que pasa a ser pensada como un proceso desde su concepción. El devenir aparece como un elemento de composición de la obra. Surge así la poética de lo efímero que bajo la condición de evanescencia cuestiona el precepto de perdurabilidad del arte. Ante el desafío de pensar el estado del arte desde la perspectiva de la poética efímera, se utilizó la filosofía de Vladimir Jankélévitch, un pensador que se caracteriza por rechazar la idea de sustancia, cuyo único plan es el de la eficacia. A partir de sus conceptos de casi-nada (presquerien) y ocasión, fue posible comprender lo que el arte contemporáneo quiere comunicar con la asimilación de
lo efímero. Así, este artículo es una reflexión filosófica sobre la cuestión: parte de la presentación del pensamiento de Jankélévitch; seguida de un análisis histórico-artístico del tema de la fluidez; para, finalmente, proponer una reflexión de la poética efímera basada en el pensamiento jankelevichiano.

Tanz in Museen ist höchst aktuell. In meinem Buch gehe ich der Frage nach, wie Tanz überhaupt in den Ausstellungskontext gelangte. Dabei blicke ich auf die wechselseitigen Beziehungen zwischen Tanz, bildender Kunst sowie ihren Institutionen Museum und Ausstellung von Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts bis zur Gegenwart. Meine Analyse fokussiert sich auf konkrete Fallbeispiele der gegenwärtigen Ausstellungspraxis, die zeitgenössischen Tanz im Format der Ausstellung präsentieren. Hierbei stehen choreografische Arbeiten von Xavier Le Roy, Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker und Boris Charmatz im Mittelpunkt.

This text examines "Work/Travail/Arbeid" by choreographer Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker as a case study of dance rethought as an exhibition. Originally shown at WIELS in Brussels and later adapted for Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall, the work reimagines the stage piece "Vortex Temporum" for the museum context. The research aims to explore how spatial and temporal conditions of exhibition spaces redefine the nature, perception, and reception of such choreographic exhibitions. The study argues that such choreographic exhibitions create new, site-specific formats that challenge conventional distinctions between dance and visual art.

This paper presents a model for value attribution on contemporary art. For that, it examines reproduction as a conservation strategy for contemporary fine art photography through the lens of modern conservation concepts of value attribution and knowledge production. Based on retrospective research into the reproduction of a photograph by artist Thomas Ruff at the Museum für Moderne Kunst in Frankfurt, the paper explores the artwork's attributed authenticities as valued by the museum's conservator, curator and the artist before and after reproduction. This analysis aims to illustrate how the assessment of contemporary artworks' realms of authenticity can influence decision-making processes surrounding their conservation and presentation.

In a time characterized by globalization and multiculturalism, a constant development of imaging technology and electronics coupled with a growing interest in the monetary worth of fine art, sustained research into the material and ontological forms of fine art contemporary photography is essential. Contemporary photography's indisputable innovations frequently result in unforeseen and unintended condition changes, introducing fundamental questions of its conservation. This paper examines the current practices in the conservation of contemporary photography within the museum environment, focusing on the use of reproduction as a conservation tool. The different roles actors adopt during the conservation decision-making framework are examined, along with the values they assign to the photographs. It is suggested that the perspectives of different stakeholders such as artists, museum professionals and printing lab specialists can provide valuable insights when identifying the authenticity ") of a photograph, and they must be included when developing a 'typology of values' to define the 'critical mass' and to guide the conservation decision-making process. Књига истражује симболичке и политичке димензије краљевских посета у контексту значајног политичког тренутка. Посета је организована након смрти краља Милана Обреновића, доношења октроисаног устава и објаве да краљица Драга није трудна, и одлагања посете руском цару, која је требало да обезбеди међународни легитимитет краљици. Путовање је обухватило Смедерево, Крагујевац, Краљево, манастире Жичу и Студеницу, Чачак, Пожегу, Ужице, Добрињу, Таково, Горњи Милановац, манастире Вујан, Враћевшницу и Дивостин, да би се преко Крагујевца и Младеновца завршило у Београду. Књига обрађује и организовање краљичиног рођендана у престоници, војне маневре у Убу и посету Нишу.
Краљевски пар је током својих путовања користио јавне церемоније и ритуале да би учврстио свој легитимитет и показао везу са народом. Посета је значајно утицала на свакодневни живот обичних људи, јер су многа места постала центри јавних свечаности, што се више никада није поновило у историји ових насеља, или бар не на начин из 1901. године. Посебан акценат стављен је на анализу верских и националних симбола, који су ојачали везу са историјским наслеђем Србије. Ови јавни наступи били су својеврсна „представа“, перформанс у коме је владарски пар добио улогу заштитника нације, док су уједно покушавали да отклоне политичке кризе и притисак опозиције.
Бројне илустрације и документи, укључујући спискове одликованих пре, током и послезавршетка ове посете, као и важне здравице, беседе и говори изговорени током ових свечаности, додатно обогаћују разумевање историјског контекста и дају читаоцима драгоцен увид у структуру и карактер ових посета.
Иако су ритуали били замишљени као средство учвршћивања државне стабилности, аутори анализирају и њихову ефемерност, указујући на то да су краљевски перформанси имали ограничен утицај на дугорочну подршку народа. На крају, књига указује на политички неуспех ових јавних наступа и убрзање одлуке војних завереника да убију краља и краљицу као својеврстан „антиперформанс“, који је требало да деконструише и симболичку моћ последњих Обреновића.

All artworks are sensitive to interpretation, decisions, and interests. During my research on working with Conceptual Art, it became clear that the people who work with artworks in museums, including conservators, greatly influence their form. This becomes especially apparent with conceptual artworks because of the input of those who are involved in their exhibition. Considering the impact this has on the artworks’ appearance each time, dealing with personal input became the focus of my research. Personal accountability forms the basis for the new thinking tool that is presented in this paper.
Conservation at the post-digital turn is no longer an activity that takes place only behind the scenes in a studio with artworks on easels and solvents on trolley carts. Many contemporary artworks become manifest in the gallery, in a public space, or on the web. This requires new kinds of expertise from conservators, varying from thorough insight into new art-making processes to highly developed social skills. In the conservation of contemporary art, working with objects has become working with people, including gardeners even, in the case of Pierre Huyghe’s La Saison des Fêtes.

Sinval Garcia (1966-2011) desenvolve a série Samsara (1997) buscando discutir os limites entre as relações do ciclo de vida e morte, tendo como vetor o corpo e suas representações na arte, utilizando as perspectivas da fotografia manipulada para relacionar conceitos sobre arte/vida por meio de intervenções pictóricas empregadas na fotografia para constituir cenas e personagens com seus dramas particulares.

O programa iconográfico da Biblioteca de Alcobaça, que apenas podemos conhecer através de uma descrição de frei António de Araújo, é um conjunto essencial para a compreensão da forma como um literato constrói uma narrativa de imagens no Portugal de seiscentos. O programa, pintado em 1656, respondia a dois objetivos principais: o de criar uma identidade institucional e, ao mesmo tempo, o de caracterizar as funções do espaço arquitetónico da biblioteca cisterciense. Na criação do discurso para as pinturas do teto, o frade de Alcobaça apoiou-se na obra Idea de un Principe Politico Cristhiano representada em cien empresas, de Diego de Saavedra Fajardo, publicado pela primeira vez em 1640. Ao analisarmos o processo de adaptação dos emblemas pedagógicos para o da caracterização institucional da biblioteca monástica, podemos compreender o modus operandi do iconógrafo, que almeja definir um significado preciso para esse novo conjunto de imagens.

O presente trabalho dedica-se à preservação, por via documental, das "obras efémeras" de Alberto Carneiro (n.1937), tendo como caso de estudo Árvore jogo/lúdico em sete imagens espelhadas (1973)(1974)(1975). Estas são obras constituídas por materiais naturais, em bruto, e por um grande número de elementos que se distribuem pelo espaço. Nelas têm um papel preponderante aspectos intangíveis como a relação com o espaço de exposição, a distribuição espacial dos diversos elementos ou a interacção (multi-sensorial) com o espectador. É feita uma problematização da sua conservação, na qual se conclui que as estratégias tradicionalmente adoptadas não se adequam a estes casos, nos quais, não só é necessária uma relativização da importância dada ao suporte material, cuja conservação não é vital para a sobrevivência das obras, como é fundamental a preservação de aspectos intangíveis que são, vulgarmente, ignorados. Neste sentido, a documentação assume-se como a principal estratégia de preservação. A segunda parte, que se dedica ao caso de estudo, inicia-se com uma breve apresentação da obra, continuando com a discussão da metodologia aplicada no estudo e documentação da mesma -levantamento da bibliografia existente, entrevistas presenciais ao autor, acompanhamento do processo de instalação da obra e utilização de novas formas de documentação -e terminando com a apresentação de resultados.

The central region of India, home to several tribal groups, is rich in cultural heritage, with the Gond tribe being one of the largest and most renowned for its artistic traditions. Gond painting, in particular, has evolved from wall art to canvas, gaining global recognition. This study examines the transformation of Gond painting, focusing on female Gond artists from Patangarh Mal village in Madhya Pradesh. Through 87 in-depth interviews, 3 case studies, and long-term observations, this research explores the evolution of Gond art, the challenges women face in adapting to technology, navigating markets, and interacting with media, and their current socioeconomic status. The findings reveal that while the content of Gond painting has shifted to address contemporary issues, women artists struggle with patriarchal norms, low literacy, and limited mobility. These challenges hinder their professional growth and market engagement, resulting in noticeable disparities compared to male artists.

Onipresente nos artigos do catálogo como um diagnóstico preciso, esse aspecto paradoxal 5 é ali mais exposto em seus sintomas do que investigado em suas causas. A coincidência entre o (decisivo) período final da tese e a segunda retrospectiva de Klein evidencia o difícil limite entre trabalho acadêmico e aproximação cultural. Por certo a qualidade do envolvimento com a obra do artista numa tese não se compara à sua experiência in loco na atual realidade burocrática da arte, da qual, aliás, faz parte o catálogo. Ao experimentar "na pele" a arte do paradoxo de Klein, no entanto, fica difícil deixar de notar o caráter instrumental da maior parte dos textos. Eles se concentram em vários dados/informações que, por sua vez, ao convergir para o sensato diagnóstico do paradoxo, não se expandem em uma dimensão crítica fértil. Assim, na tentativa de superar o equívoco da redução da obra kleiniana a atitudes escandalosas, a mostra, tal como registrada no catálogo 6 -acaba por se converter no perigo de eliminar a própria arte, submetendo o artisticamente excitante a um conceito cultural. A começar pelo reconhecimento do artista como "um dos emblemas da radicalidade artística que conduziu à definição da arte contemporânea", capaz de anteceder seus homólogos americanos e europeus no "vocabulário, na gramática e na declinação dos tipos de registro dos restos possíveis" (Morineau). Ora, como seria possível a um "emblema de radicalidade artística" anteceder alguém sem perder justo seu caráter radical? Pois, "na ordem poética e artística, o revelador raramente tem um precursor". 7 O argumento de um "Klein precursor" não se presta à "legitimação" da arte -transgressiva por natureza -do "gângster da sensibilidade". Klein compartilha com o experimentalismo artístico contemporâneo o foco na potência poética -reconhecido pela curadora como "um não-fazer que também seria artístico" -, transfigurada em atitudes escandalosas. Provocações, menos inconseqüentes do que produtivas, elas incorporam a contingência própria da arte contemporânea, com destaque para uma inflacionada subjetividade artística. 8 Após os prefácios, 9 o catálogo se estrutura em três seções: "Corpo, cor, imaterial"; "Klein em seu século", que marca a presença da obra do artista francês nos Estados Unidos, no Japão e na Europa (França, Alemanha, Itália, Áustria e países do leste europeu); e "Klein e sua imagem", que trata da auto-elaboração de sua imagem pública. Abrindo a primeira seção, Denis Ryout (Impregnações: cenários e cenografias) liga a ambigüidade da obra kleiniana à sua capacidade de alternar presença e ausência. O autor entende a expressão exaustivamente empregada pelo artista -"sensibilidade pictórica"como uma especificidade ontológica regida pela noção-chave de "impregnação". Produção imediata de presença, pintar equivale a impregnar o espaço e o espectador, o que significa anular sua distância em relação à obra. Nesse sentido, Ryout atenta para os "parâmetros

En  el  marco  de  la  investigación  que  realizamos  sobre  las  primeras acciones del Grupo Escombros a través del archivo personal de Héctor Puppo —integrante y cofundador—, nos embarcamos en una reflexión en torno a la muestra Grupo Escombros. Pancartas 30 Años (1988-2018) realizada en la Galería Walden (CABA) de marzo a mayo de 2018. En esta reseña, indagaremos en cómo el archivo de obras efímeras y sus paratextos, constituyen una herramienta de un gran potencial para la presentación y actualización de este tipo de producciones.

As  part  of  our  investigation  into  the  early  works  of  Escombros  Group  through  the  personal  archive  of  Hector  Puppo  —founder  and  participant—  we  set  out  to  give  some  impressions  on  the  retrospective  exhibition  Grupo Escombros.  Pancartas  30  Años  (1988-2018),  which  took  place at Walden Gallery (Buenos Aires) from March to May in 2018. In this review, we will examine how the archive of the work itself and its paratext represent an important tool  with  great  potential  for  the  presentation  and  the  reinterpretation of this type of productions.

En el presente trabajo de investigación se tomará el archivo personal de Héctor Puppo sobre el Grupo Escombros con el fin de dar cuenta de su importancia como dispositivo para la reconstrucción de la historia del grupo a partir del registro material de los acontecimientos, es decir, de sus obras. Se indagará, también, en la dimensión afectiva que se pone en juego desde esta necesidad de materializar las obras y hacerlas perdurar a través del archivo. Asimismo, se buscará la posible tensión existente entre el carácter del acontecimiento y el carácter de su registro. Para abordar estos aspectos, tomaremos los conceptos Michel Foucault en torno al archivo como sistema discursivo.

Este artículo da cuenta de complejos procesos que configuran paisajes culturales en la provincia de Jujuy a través de manifestaciones religiosas relacionadas fuertemente con la capacidad de representación simbólica del patrimonio, que activan mecanismos de memoria social. Las investigaciones se desarrollaron desde un enfoque cualitativo con el propósito de acceder a la comprensión de manifestaciones culturales religiosas en unárea de triple frontera (Argentina-Chile-Bolivia) donde históricamente se han desarrollado procesos de re-configuración de identidades y territorios. Específicamente nos enfocamos en el estudio de festividades religiosas que recrean itinerarios culturales de amplitud internacional, revitalizando cíclicamente procesos de interacción material y simbólica entre actores locales y transnacionales, y otorgan nuevas significaciones al paisaje. En el proceso descubrimos la importancia de otras manifestaciones culturales-como las folklóricas-que actúan como mecanismos de re-actualización de la memoria social y son percibidas como parte del patrimonio cultural local.

The preservation of performance-based artworks, such as installations and performances, is often accompanied by frequent discussions regarding their documentation. How can performance-based artworks, which are unrepeatable and contextual, be documented after the event? This paper aims to reflect upon the purpose of the documentation of performance-based artworks and about how the micro-decisions conservators make during the documentation process can influence and are influenced by their intentions. In this context, the concepts and practices of documentation are critically examined. With this goal in mind, the artwork Identificación (1975) by the Portuguese artist Manoel Barbosa (b. 1953) and the documentation produced in two different contexts by two different people (a choreographer and a conservator) are discussed. El presente trabajo tiene como objetivo presentar el marco teórico, los ejes conceptuales vertebradores y parte del estado de avance del proyecto de investigación en torno a las manifestaciones socioculturales y producciones artísticas efímeras «puestas en escena» en diversos ciclos festivos de Buenos Aires, entre 1776 y 1910. En el citado proyecto, dichas producciones son consideradas como materializaciones temporarias de aspectos simbólicos significativos del imaginario colectivo porteño. 1 A su vez, las fiestas y celebraciones estudiadas son entendidas como partes constitutivas de la trama cultural urbana y del patrimonio intangible de la ciudad. Realizado el estado de la cuestión constatamos que, por tratarse de un objeto de estudio que ha sido soslayado por la historiografía tradicional (entre otros factores por su carácter perecedero e inmaterial), no es posible un abordaje sencillo del tema a partir de un análisis directo del mismo. En efecto, las diversas fuentes (documentales, literarias, periodísticas, visuales) describen de manera tangencial y fragmentaria distintos aspectos relativos a un objeto in absentia, que debe ser «re-construido» a lo largo del proceso de investigación a efectos de su «puesta en valor». Por otra parte, al tratarse de manifestaciones culturales comprensibles sólo desde la perspectiva braudeliana de la longue durée, planteamos la necesidad de elaborar una periodización ad hoc. Por consiguiente, el extenso período abordado se dividió en tres etapas generales: la primera, iniciada con la creación del Virreinato del Río de La Plata y prolongada hasta el ascenso de Rosas al poder (teniendo en cuenta el cambio disruptivo que supuso la ilustración rivadaviana); una segunda, vinculada al proceso de organización del Estado nacional y un último período, coincidente con la consolidación del mismo. A su vez, en estos bloques diacrónicos se indagaron ciertos «casos-testigo» desde una perspectiva sincrónica, a partir de los cuales se precisaron algunos ejes conceptuales vertebradores, los cuales se exponen en el presente trabajo. El abordaje de las producciones culturales efímeras, concebido desde una perspectiva interdisciplinaria, se nutre de diferentes aportes teórico-metodológicos: de la hermenéuti-

50  years  after  the  coup  d`état  in  Chile, cities  such  as  Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Leeds, Milan, Belgrade, Los Angeles, and Chicago, still display traces of Chilean exile on the walls of cultural centres, universities, theatres and other buildings.  These  are  the  remains  of  hundreds  of  murals,  painted by  brigades created by Chileans in exile to encourage their host countries to show solidarity with  their  resistance  to  the  Pinochet  dictatorship.  The  complex  experience  of Chilean exile and its long-lasting and intergenerational repercussions have only slowly been integrated into research and memory practices. This article examines three  case  studies  of  Chilean  murals  in  exile  as  atypical  forms  of  testimonial sources, with the aim of gaining insights into the multi-layered network of actors behind  them,  in particular  into  the  testimonies  of  Chilean  exiles  and  actors  of international    solidarity.    It    also    explores    the    memorial    dimensions    of postephemeral  murals  and  how  these  can  function  as  carriers  of  a  collective, transnational memory of Chilean exile.

The focus of the present paper is a prescient political allegory that was used to represent the Iberian monarchs' fight against Islam: the Battle of the Giants. We explore the propagandistic significance of this allegory through an analysis of its two principal forms: the Gigantomachy and the Titanomachy. Taking the Gigantomachies created by Giulio Romano and Perino del Vaga as our point of departure, this study develops a diachronic approach to reconstructing the genesis, evolution and dissemination of this mythological theme in Italy and the Iberian Peninsula from the early sixteenth to the early eighteenth centuries. Attention is then turned to the incorporation of this allegory into the political discourse of the Hispanic Monarchy from the end of the sixteenth century onwards. Careful scrutiny is paid to invocations of this allegory in the ephemeral decorations created for royal festivals during the early modern period, and it is asked: who gained political capital from these events?

Wie prägen ästhetische Spuren der völkischen Bewegungen unseren gebauten und erlebten Alltag? Welches Mensch- und Gesellschaftsbild reproduziert dieser tägliche und unbewusste Umgang mit einer Formensprache, die reformistisch, umbrechend, revolutionär bis konservativ, aber vor allem auch antisemitisch, rassistisch und biologistisch exklusiv gemeint war? In einer zweitägigen Veranstaltung, die aus einem Seminar mit dem Titel „Das Volk bilden“ der Kunstpädagogik an der Hochschule für bildende Künste hervorgeht, gehen wir diesen Fragen nach und zeigen, was wir dazu bisher herausgefunden haben.

Dieter Roths Multiple Portrait of the Artist as Vogelfutterbüste (P.O.TH.A.A.VFB.) gilt als eines seiner prominentesten Werke und wird gemeinhin als kritische Verarbeitung des Bildungsromans A Portrait of
the Artist as a Young Man von James Joyce interpretiert (vgl. u. a. Beil 2002; Dobke 1997, 2003; Gelshorn 2015). Viele der bisherigen Untersuchungen zum Verhältnis zwischen Joyces Roman und Roths Vogelfutterbüste beschränken sich zumeist auf die Materialität. Roth verwendete für den Guss seiner Büste Schokolade und Vogelfutter statt traditionell Bronze.
Die ephemere Stofflichkeit der Büste gibt Anlass, diese als Ressentiment gegenüber der Heroisierung des Künstlertums zu interpretieren. Die eigentliche Referenz auf den Roman von Joyce, als medialer Primat der Kritik Roths, wurde bei der Interpretation der Vogelfutterbüste bisher nur oberflächlich gestreift. Gleichfalls wurde dem Titel des Verfallskunstwerks wenig Beachtung geschenkt, obwohl die Vogelfutterbüste das einzige Werk Roths ist, das er mit einer Abkürzung versah. Es wird zu zeigen
sein, dass eben nicht nur die Stofflichkeit als Medium der Ablehnung verstanden werden muss, sondern ebenso der Titel als integraler Bestandteil des Werks.
Insbesondere die Chiffre (P.O.TH.A.A.VFB.), die Roth dem Titel beigab, soll in den Blick genommen werden. Denn hier, so meine These, äußert sich eine detaillierte Kritik an dem als Bildungsroman ausgewiesenen "A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man".

This article explores and challenges notions and methodologies of conservation, including the use of blockchain technologies as a means of establishing provenance of a physical BioArtwork, of the artist’s documentation encapsulating their intentions and of the conservator’s records required for the artwork’s ongoing care. The exploration is done through a case study of an art project called ‘Unruly Objects and Biological Conservation’ created by Anna Dumitriu with support from Alex May. The artwork consists of three items containing RFID tags sealed in resin – which point to the location of the artist’s documentation. Therefore, the works physically include instructions for maintaining their inherent concepts and materiality for the benefit of the conservators. Such instructions can often be difficult to track down, or become disassociated from the artwork while the digital preservation of this storage method also poses its own set of questions.
