Environmental Ethics and Sustainable Development

Scientific knowledge is essential for philosophy. Without it, claims to knowledge and understanding would overlook many important aspects of reality, which always hinders meaningful philosophical discussion. Philosophy, especially ecological philosophy, provides science with broader perspectives and limits the range of interpretative options within scientific inquiry. It emphasizes the importance of the modes of argument and explanation favored by the scientific community and underscores the epistemological lessons science offers to a broader audience.
Philosophical ecology is an emerging subfield of philosophy. Its primary focus is on exploring, constructing, and elaborating foundational theories, methods, and concepts of ecology in its broadest sense—covering both theoretical and applied ecological issues. However, the scope of philosophical inquiry into ecology can be even broader. It can be approached entirely from within philosophy. Conversely, environmental science views philosophical ecology even more expansively.
Some philosophers insist that “Ecological philosophy” means a deep, personal concern for the environment. Additionally, many questions that arise within academic philosophy—though rooted in other branches—must be examined about ecological issues and ideas.
“Philosophy,” Davis reminds us, “deals with questions that cannot be handled so easily by a science, at least not in ways that fully address or even clarify the questions.”
“Philosophical ecology,” then, can be seen as an open call for philosophers everywhere to connect their expertise with some of the most urgent social, political, and scientific issues today, whether or not their research is directly within philosophical ecology.
“The ecological crisis,” Davis writes, “offers no single, clearly defined question; instead, it presents a complex of problems that requires ongoing investigation across many different theoretical and practical areas” (Vladykova, 2011). The main goals of philosophical ecology are therefore: a) developing integrated conceptual, methodological, and theoretical frameworks suitable for ecological science and guiding ecological research; and b) philosophically exploring methods, concepts, perspectives, and other realities related to ecology—be they tied to scientific practice or broader environmental reflection. Science remains at the core of every program or scheme within philosophical ecology; it is the essential tool for determining whether the theories and frameworks proposed by ecological philosophers are sufficient—that is, capable of being adopted by ecological scientists as part of rigorous scientific evaluation of ecological efforts.

Ecological philosophy will grow more important over time. Its future depends on its ability to tackle key questions like wholeness versus reduction and progress versus preservation, as well as its role in fostering ecological and social sustainability (Gare, 2018). Current trends include expanding the Anglo-American philosophical canon through pluralism, increasing engagement with continental philosophy to understand wholeness and progress, and a growing willingness to include indigenous philosophies and traditions in the search for a sustainable future. Exploring these issues and contributing to their development requires thoughtful consideration of the future of ecological philosophy as a distinct field of study (Vladykova, 2011). Ecological philosophy encompasses a range of disciplines, including ecology, ecological ethics, ecological reflection, sustainability, social movements, the Holocene, climate change, the Anthropocene, extinction, long-term survival, and technological development. An outline of priorities for future ecological philosophy research is provided. Ecological philosophy is destined to be a central concern of the twenty-first century. Modern conditions, which are both urgent and daunting, have made the field more challenging and more hopeful than ever before. The destruction caused by humanity to the planet is so extensive and severe that any meaningful effort to halt ecological decline can only be considered a Pyrrhic victory. Many engaged with ecological philosophy now find it challenging to view ecological foresight in a perspective shorter than human history or even from the beginning of the universe itself. Conversely, the current crises facing humanity also present a broad and systematic problem that philosophers have always relished, especially since its solutions can inspire the development of comprehensive new worldviews. The main priorities of ecological philosophy in the twenty-first century are thus derived from a small set of interconnected challenges and promises. However, when balancing these priorities, it’s essential to recognize that different emphases can lead to very different, often divergent, future paths (Gare, 2018; Vladykova, 2011).

How will sustainable farming seek to fulfil present-day food security while conserving environmental resources? Finding equilibrium in food security is challenged by eco-individualism. Using the philosophical method of analysis, this study finds that eco-individualism characterizes the moral dominance of other members of the earth. The study recommends the implementation of the Native-Centric Ecological Model (NCEM), a decolonization practice aimed at restraining eco-individualism. The NCEM is an idea rooted in agroecology that involves integrating native ecological knowledge, social practices, and community engagement in rice farming to enhance biodiversity and environmental sustainability. It will also help improve food security and enhance sustainable rice farming in Nigeria. The study concludes that improving farmers' well-being, increasing community commitment to ecological practices, and supporting biodiversity conservation will promote the well-being of the earth, aimed at restraining eco individualism.

A distinctly Islamic approach to environmental education is pinpointed as a result of (a) identifying, listing, sorting, and grouping the verses in the Qura'n (the holy book of Islam and Moslems) related to environmental education such as learning, exercising, and mind and knowledge development, and (b) finding connections and relationships between groups according to mutual meanings. The approach is formulated in a tripod-type structure. Allah Subhanahu Wa Taala, the one-and-only Creator, represented by the belief in, and application of his rules and directions as stated in the holy Qura'n, stands at the top of the tripod. The legs of the tripod represent faith, manifestation, and knowledge, and each leg, in turn, constitutes the top of a local sub-tripod comprising of path, reference, and end results. ow a days technological innovation had a great contribution to globalisation all aspect which change human life style. But this change left behind the values. Such as-As the erosion of family values very much seen in the urban families due to nuclear family. A child is a Resource in the society. If a child cannot adopt the values, there is no meaning of education. So, it is said that human resource is westage.On the other approach our culture is actively involved in spiritual and ethical value, unless these values not achieved the education is not fulfilled his aims. In this regard this paper deals with the thoughts and view of Swami Vivekananda's to develop human resource in respect of education and value. India is a country where numbers of educational reformers were born. Swami Vivekananda was one of the educational reformers whose educational thoughts are unique. Education is a subject which modified the human behaviour. According to Vivekananda education is the manifestation of perfection already in man. He said that education was not only collection of information but something more meaningful. Real education is that which prepare a man for struggle to existence. It prepares man for social service and develops his character, mental power and intelligence, gives self confidence and self-reliance among the individual. Resumen: En la era del Antropoceno y en el contexto de la Cuarta Revolución Industrial, la inteligencia artificial representa un elemento que profundiza los problemas relacionados con la degradación ambiental. En este sentido, figuras destacadas como Aimee van Wynsberghe y Mark Coeckelbergh han comenzado a plantear el concepto de inteligencia artificial sostenible (IAS). Sin embargo, es importante conectar esta propuesta conceptual con un modelo de innovación que permita su realización en aras de la sostenibilidad. La quíntuple hélice constituye una oportunidad para el impulso de la IAS a través de una innovación comprometida con la participación social y el cuidado ambiental.

Rainforestation is a native tree forest restoration innovation. In the
1990s, a woman was significantly a part of the conceptualization of
Rainforestation. In recent years, Rainforestation had been introduced
in two small Municipalities in the Visayas where a number of people
have embraced said conservation innovation. Nevertheless, this
researcher has observed that the drivers of Rainforestation’s
implementation in two grassroots communities in the Visayas have
been women. This study aims to investigate what moved a woman to
conceptualize Rainforestation, explore what has motivated the woman
who conceptualized Rainforestation and the two groups of women
from different communities to take charge in the implementation of
Rainforestation at the national level and in their respective localities, determine the challenges of this women-led forest restoration
initiatives, investigates into the things or benefits that Rainforestation
has given to the Rainforestation adopters, and decipher elements of
gender politics in the realm of Rainforestation’s conceptualization and
implementation.

The paper presents some research results on primary teachers’ competence on integrated teaching in Vietnam. We have conducted a survey with teachers and educational managers in the context of renewing general education curriculum and texbooks as well as new teacher’s professional standards. The research results have shown that most of respondents agreed with our proposed competencies for integrating teaching and their basic components. Based on these components, we have described indicators for each capacity and suggested some measures to design continuous professional development for primary teachers so that they could meet the requirements of general education renovation.

Learning biology through social context local wisdom helps to encourage students to appreciate the value of what is available in the community. This study aimed to develop theoretical framework for STEM teaching strategies in school setting. The paper clarified what the worldwide leaders and educators" beliefs, focuses, and actions of STEM education; what the conceptions of STEM education should be provided for teachers; Suggested STEM education teaching in aspect of practicing knowledge in real world through STS approach, concept of technology and engineering reserved for STEM education; the implementation of Yuenyong (2006)" s STS approach for enhancing students" applying scientific and other knowledge for designing the solutions in real-world problems. Based on these literatures, this paper will propose the practical idea of STEM education teaching approach which integration key concepts among problem based, project based, inquiry, design, and a real world problem solving as STS. The paper, therefore, propose the theoretical framework of STEM education teaching approach as inquiry from the context based. The teaching approach consists of 7 stages. These include (1) Identification of social issues, (2) Identification of potential solution, (3) Need for knowledge, (4) Decision-making, (5) Development of prototype or product, (6) Test and evaluate the Solution, and (7) Socialization and completion decision stage. The paper discussed more details of each stage.

The study assessed the quality of stream water of the watershed within the Community-Based Forest Management (CBFM) Project in Cienda, Gabas, Baybay, Leyte, Philippines. Results showed that, on the average, streamflow velocity was 0.30m/sec, streamflow volume 0.32m3/sec, turbidity 2.96 ntu and the associated sediments 16.0 mg/ L. Odor and taste were unobjectionable. pH ranged from 7.50 to 7.0 while total hardness from 7.84 to 15.16 mg/L. The average nitrite (NO2) content was 11.115mg/L while nitrate (NO3) was 1.05 mg/L. The concentration of nutrients was also very low. Phosphorous (P) ranged only from 2.20 to 4.46 mg/kg or parts per million (ppm) while potassium (K) ranged from 3.71 to 3.90 ppm. Sodium (Na), calcium (Ca), and magnesium (Mg) concentrations were also very low. Heavy metals were detected but also at low concentrations.

The Visayas State University (VSU) developed the rainforestation farming (RF) system to replace the more destructive forms of kaingin or slash-and-burn practices commonly practiced by farmers and provide them with a stable and higher income. VSU disseminated the technology through training and establishment of demonstration farms coupled with various extension materials. The most important changes experienced by farmers from adopting RF were increase in income, greater social skills, improvement of their water and air conditions, and enhancement of biodiversity in their rainforestation farms.

This paper aimed to determine the direct and indirect factors of students" course repetition using the secondary data from the UCI Machine of Learning repository. It contained 5820 evaluation scores from the university students. The factors considered were teachers" performance (TP), perceived subject difficulty (PSD), course code (CC), and attendance (ATT). Chi-square test and path analysis were employed in data analyses for the correlations among variables and creating a path model for course repetition (CR), respectively. Results revealed that the obtained model was consistent with the empirical data based on the accepted model fit index (X 2 , GFI, AGFI, NFI, CFI, RMSEA) value range within the set standard criteria. The model also shows that course repetition has three significant direct factors: ATT, PSD, and CC, with PSD as its most substantial caused effect. It also has three indirect characteristics: TP, ATT, and CC. Overall, the model has a weak determination coefficient, 4.1% that the factors' influence accounted for approximately 4.1% of CR's variance. Hence, the data set used in the analysis has limited variables that several factors in course repetition were not included in the model. Conversely, the factors mentioned above were significantly (p<0.05) correlated except for CR and TP relationships. Such variables may be considered by the school managers in the formulation of intervention to reduce course repetition.

Environmental extremity or adversity is one of the dominant problems in world wide. For this, the main concern of ethics is to provide a crucial and a cogent remedy for sustainable development. Due to maximization of certain issues concerning sustainable development this paper intends to demonstrate virtue ethics as a method in terms of which such issues can be minimize. An appropriate structure for sustainable development can be attainable through the application of virtue ethics and its implementation in the daily life of human beings. Here we discuss about the virtue ethics which is considered as the character of human being that helps them in attaining a good life. Therefore, virtue ethics is important to study in order to establish a behavioural and habitual foundation that can be conducive for sustainable development. The prime motto of virtue ethics is to discover the protective and potential character of human being which can be more effective for sustainable development.

This study is aimed to examine the effect of reputation toward the quality of corporate social responsibility disclosure. This study applied an index based on the qualitative characteristics of the International Financial Reporting Standard Conceptual Framework. In addition, the study is modified with  a measured variable of the Quality of Corporate Social responsibility Disclosure. Furthermore, this study used purposive judgment sampling and 13 relevant financial sector companies were obtained. The result indicates that company reputation has positive relationship with the quality of CSR disclosure, but it is insignificant. In addition, this study indicates that the relevant dimension has not been highlighted compared to other dimensions such as loyal representation, understanding, and Comparability. CSR disclosures prioritize quality in order to be credible communication tool for the users.

This article seeks to determine how useful corporate governance theories are in understanding the business environment in Jordan, and the context of concentrated ownership which exists. As with most developing countries, a majority of firms are controlled by a few shareholders, overwhelmingly families, which has a major impact on company management and operations. This study contends that traditional agency theory is not able to clearly explain many practice of corporate governance as it does not take into account social and cultural issues. A review of several corporate governance theories (agency theory, stewardship theory, stakeholder theory, resource dependency theory and institutional theory) is undertaken in this article analysing how these theories address the impact of governance mechanisms, such as board members, and their social relationships. Whilst each theory, on its own, has different weaknesses, collectively they are able to complement one another.

The main focus of the study was on teachers’ perceptions towards STEM teaching and learning from aspects of general perception, training, implementation and STEM teaching information. This study aims to examine and analyse the effect of corporate governance on firm value. Corporate governance is measured through institutional ownership, managerial ownership, the proportion of independent commissioners, the size of the board of commissioners, the female board of commissioners, the size of the board of directors and the size of the audit committee as independent variables, while firm value is measured by Tobin&#39;s Q as the dependent variable. The population in this study were IICD award-winning companies in 2014-2019 and obtained 12 companies as samples by purposive sampling using multiple linear regression data analysis techniques with SPSS 20. The results of the study simultaneously show that institutional ownership, managerial ownership, the proportion of independent commissioners, the size of the board of commissioners, the presence of female commissioners, the size of the board and the size of the audit committee have an effect on firm value.

Checking water quality is essential to ensure safe drinking water. Safe drinking water provides the health of the consumers. This study employed descriptive research which characterized the water (biophysicochemical) qualities of potential water sources in Camotes Islands, Central Visayas, Philippines. Water samples were gathered and tested by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) water laboratory for microbiological and chemical qualities and had undergone senses inspection and traditional laboratory processes such as filtration and evaporation for the physical analysis. Results revealed that water samples were high in disease-causing microorganisms or coliforms. Total hardness revealed an increased level of calcium carbonate value that contributed to water hardness. The physical characteristics of these potential water sources revealed that they conformed with the standards regarding color, taste, odor, and turbidity. These potential water sources revealed disease-causing factors that could lead to less-fitting for drinking or household consumption. It is then recommended that these potential water sources should undergo proper treatment, reconstruction, or rehabilitation of the reservoir and enhance the piping system. Furthermore, a repeat study might be conducted to the same site or other potential water sources for confirmation and determination of the level of contamination.

Lessons combining of the integration of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics or STEM Education were designed and used to enhance learning activities in a Statistical Mechanics classroom for undergraduate students at Ubon Ratchathani University, Thailand. We hardly find in the public domain Swami Vivekananda's views on environmental pollution and change in the ecology as an obvious outcome of industrial growth and how to take care of these adverse impacts on society. Does this mean that he did not attach any importance to such a vital issue? Did he ignore this issue because society, in his time, was not much concerned about environmental degradation? In fact, neither of these two assumptions is true. Vivekananda was very much concerned about nature and environment. His views and thoughts were so subtle that we could not capture them. But then, how to understand him on this very important subject? To get the answer, we must understand first the his views on the relation between God (creator), Universe (the creation), nature, human beings and the environment. This Universe is created by the God. Nature is an essential part of the Universe. He said, "All the various forms of cosmic energy, such as matter, force, intelligence and so forth, are simply the manifestations of that cosmic intelligence. Everything that you see, feel, or hear and the whole universe, is His creation. If we pay too much attention to take care of the world, we become materialistic. The nature is both internal and external. Not only does it comprise the laws that govern the particles of matter outside us and in our bodies, but also the more subtle nature within, which is the motive power governing the external. It is good and very grand to conquer external nature, but grandeur is to conquer our internal nature."

This essay aims to reflect on the idea of landscape and our relationship with it by taking the Japanese notion of furusato (native place) in its ontological dimension. Grounded on Heidegger's 'phenomenology of Being' and 'ontology', it will be developed a phenomenological understanding of fieldwork experience in a Japanese rural community in order to rethink both the furusato and the 'Being-landscape' relation. As a consequence, we will be concerned not with how people speak about landscape, but with how the landscape speaks through people. What will be brought to light are the landscape's moral and relational dimensions: namely, (i) the responsibility towards both our communities and future generations and (ii) a more-than-physical understanding of landscape that alerts us to our belonging to a common world comprised of relationships and tasks.

In this technology-driven Digital Age, Management Education is primarily engaged in development of skills and techno-economic competence of students with dominant thrust on sharpening their rational faculties and quantitative ability. Deeper questions and nobler qualittative issues like Spirituality, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Ethics are naturally assigned low priority in the rush for money, career, fame, power and position both at the individual and organizational levels. The present paper engages in a Qualitative Research by conducting Focus group Interviews among Participants (students) at the Undergraduate level who had taken up Management Education. After content analysis of the responses the authors highlight their observations on the existing gaps in prevailing management education leading to failure of the present system in charging the students with a deeper Meaning of Work and a higher Purpose of Life. The paper then delves into exploration in pertinent tenets of Classical Indian Wisdom (Upanishads or Vedanta and the Bhagavadgita) to enrich the spectrum of Management education with insights on Humanistic Philosophy, Holistic Learning, Enlightened CSR and Ethics, and Inspirational Leadership towards creating a better and more humane future for modern organizations.

Sustainable development, very frequently discussing topic recently, is an important development concept giving importance not only to the present generations but for the future too. It has socioeconomic and environmental components and all these components have its own objectives. The simultaneous attainment of the objectives of these components require a combined effort from all parts of the government such as Centre, state and local selfgovernments. Any socioeconomic activities should be sustainable we should give a considerable level of concentration and importance to the future generations. For that we should utilize the environmental resources effectively and efficiently. To attain rapid economic growth and development, we should attain some goals which should be sustainable in nature and it is an agenda to achieve during the year 2030. Present study is the analysis of some of the goals of sustainable development on behalf of the outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic. COVID-19 spread in the World has devastating impacts, especially upon the vulnerable sections of the communities. In the globally connected world, we should need a feel of responsibility to care for each other. Regardless of where in the world you live, a shared sense of caring too is needed in the indiscriminate nature of the pandemic.

Environmental crisis is the outward manifestation of crisis of mind and spirit. To attain sustainable development, definitely we should follow environmental ethics. Ethical responsibility involves how we think and act towards environment and through that way we can protect environment for the future generation. Through this paper, the presenter makes a distinction between Anthropocentrism and Techno-centrism and how can make use of techno centrism to bring up the mentality towards eco-centrism. Through eco centrism, we can assure environmental sustainability. Anthropocentrism interprets the world in terms of human values and experience. It can be called as human centrism and human supremacy. Techno-centrism is a value system that centred on technology and its ability to control and protect the environment. The existing environmental resources are not only enough to satisfy our needs but for the future also but remember it should not used to fulfil our greed.

Thus, how an educator could organize teaching activities in order to enable the critical thinking ability of students in high school? Based on the stages of the solving process in the learning process of the student, the expression of critical thinking in each stage, the author would like to suggest educational orientation program following STEM system (STEM activities) in order to develop critical thinking of students. This article analyses the impact of using STEM activities on the development of students in some high schools in mountainous regions in the northern part of Vietnam. The results show the development of critical thinking of students through STEM activities and some superior suggestions for using STEM activities to motivate critical thinking of students in high school.

This study aims to investigate the relationship between company sustainability and company value. This study involved a sample of companies included in the proper index listed on the capital market and included in the category of 45 of the most actively traded companies (LQ45) on the Indonesia Stock Exchange with a study period of 2015-2018. Sample selection by purposive sampling method with the final results obtained 20 sample companies that meet the sample criteria.
