Der Himmel uber Berlin

La polarización política que sufrió el mundo tras la Segunda Guerra Mundial se materializó en Berlín en forma de muro como máxima representación del conflicto de la Guerra Fría. A su vez, esta polarización mundial tuvo repercusiones arquitectónicas reflejadas en la ciudad y representadas a través del cine, que también había quedado bajo dos órbitas culturales opuestas. El mundo capitalista proyectaba un Berlín Oriental protagonizado por agentes secretos y espías jóvenes y atractivos, una ciudad hostil y llena de obstáculos, una imagen pésima del Comunismo. La construcción de este imaginario negaba la existencia de ciudadanos medios, de una suerte de rutina en la ciudad oriental y, sobre todo, la posibilidad de llevar una vida relativamente normal en la República Democrática Alemana. De la mano de directores de ambas zonas de Alemania, la Reunificación de 1990 supuso un punto de inflexión para el país que, también culturalmente y desde la perspectiva cinematográfica de manera más concreta, necesitó encontrar su nueva identidad en el contexto de Europa. Los intentos de recuperar el pasado de la RDA, barrido bajo la alfombra del capitalismo tras la caída del muro, se tradujeron en una serie de películas que con considerable nostalgia hablaban de aquella república desde la perspectiva más humana. Si bien existió una tendencia constante a conferir un significado político muy potente a ciertos edificios y espacios urbanos de Berlín Oriental, este cine exploró las vertientes de la representación cinematográfica de manera más compleja, atendiendo a los diferentes matices ideológicos y al margen de objetivos propagandísticos.
El resultado es que Berlín Oriental ha sido representado en el cine como el objeto mismo y escenario de la representación cinematográfica, algo que ha sido alimentado y definido gracias también a la imagen de archivo, pasando a ser uno de los principales iconos históricos del imaginario europeo del s. XX.

The cultural polarization that emerged worldwide after 1945 provided two different approaches in Berlin regarding its architectural plans and subsequently, its filmic depiction. Capitalism projected an East Berlin crawling with secret agents and young and attractive spies, a hostile city riddled of obstacles, an awful image of Communism. This depiction denied the reality of normal citizens and an ordinary life in the German Democratic Republic. The German Reunification in 1990 was the turning point for the former GDR to find its own identity within the context of a new Europe. The concept of Ostalgie was a consequence of this attempt of depicting through cinema the everyday life and the private sphere in East Berlin. Thus, the filmic result was that the city became the setting and the protagonist of the stories through the representation of a more personal perspective of society. By using archive and documentary footage, East Berlin has been depicted as one of the main historical icons of European imagery of the 20th Century.

This essay is about two movies Der Himmel über Berlin (The Sky above Berlin, of 1987, directed by the German movie director Win Wenders) and O céu de Sueli (Suely´s  Sky, of 2006, directed by the Brazilian movie director Karim Aïnouz), whose protagonists try to articulate an idea of paradise, by the displacement movement. Geographic and temporal distances between the two movies appear in the intelligibility of the world created by them as well as in their colors, their soundtracks and their rhythms. The essay will point out some of the aesthetics differences and shows that, through fantasy, the works provide us with the points of view, the inspiration, the images, and the enlightenments concerning the limits and the possibilities of human’s paradise that should be even envied by gods.
