Critical Intercultural Communication

Tama raportti on puheenvuoro niihin johtamis- ja kehittamishaasteisiin, joita oppilaitosten digitalisoitumiskehitys on tuonut mukanaan. Keskisuomalaisissa toisen- ja korkea-asteen oppilaitoksessa tehtyjen haastatteluiden ja verkkokyselyn pohjalta tarkastellaan sita, miten oppilaitoksissa on vastattu tieto- ja viestintatekniikan opetuskayton mukanaan tuomiin johtamis- ja kehittamishaasteisiin ja millaisiin ongelmiin naita haasteita ratkottaessa on tormatty. Kirjoittajat tekevat tulosten pohjalta kaytannollisia kehittamisehdotuksia oppilaitosten johtamiseen ja toiminnan kehittamiseen. Raportti liittyy Verkko-oppimisen strateginen johtaminen ja kehittaminen VESTRA -projektiin, jota rahoitti Euroopan sosiaalirahasto ja Keski-Suomen elinkeino- liikenne ja ymparistokeskus. Raportti sopii oppilaitosten johtajille, opettajille, paattajille ja aiheesta kiinnostuneille tieto- ja viestintatekniikan opetuskayton kehittamiseen.

This article examines studies published in four Colombian journals between 2014 and 2023. A total of 91 issues were reviewed to identify articles addressing one or more of the following topics: English Language Teaching (ELT), Critical Interculturality (CI), and Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL). The methodology followed the three-step process proposed by Álvarez-Valencia (2014), combined with principles from the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP). The article inclusion process consisted of reviewing titles, abstracts, and keywords, followed by classification according to research type and thematic focus. Out of 791 articles, 129 were selected (99 national and 30 international) for analysis. Findings reveal a growing interest in CI, mostly expressed through reflective and theoretical articles focused on higher education. Empirical research on this topic remains limited, particularly at the school level (Grades 0 to 11) and involving teachers as participants. CALL, in turn, has been approached mainly from conventional perspectives focused on language skills development, with little to no integration of critical or decolonial perspectives. The intersection between CI and CALL remains underexplored in Colombian research, with a near absence of studies addressing both dimensions at the school level. These findings underscore the urgent need to promote empirical studies and the development of technology-mediated critical pedagogical proposals that foster transformative intercultural attitudes in these educational contexts. Consequently, this study advances actions related to the decolonization of English Language Teaching (ELT) and, as Granados-Beltrán (2018) noted, such actions are inherently connected to the research process.

Cultural sensitivity is a fundamental aspect of effective Teaching English to Speakers of Other
Languages (TESOL), particularly in increasingly multicultural educational environments. This
study investigates the role of cultural awareness in TESOL by analyzing survey responses from
TESOL educators and students across various educational institutions in Duhok and Zakho,
including universities, high schools, and private language centers. A mixed-methods approach was
employed, incorporating qualitative data from semi-structured interviews and quantitative data
analyzed using statistical tools. The findings indicate that while many educators acknowledge the
importance of cultural sensitivity, challenges persist in implementing culturally responsive
teaching practices. The survey data highlight instances where cultural misinterpretations,
stereotypes, and lack of representation in learning materials impact student engagement and
comprehension. Students, on the other hand, expressed a desire for greater inclusivity and
recognition of their cultural backgrounds in language instruction. The study concludes that cultural
sensitivity enhances TESOL instruction by fostering an inclusive classroom environment,
reducing communication barriers, and increasing student motivation. However, challenges such
as institutional constraints, teacher preparedness, and cultural biases require continuous
professional development and curriculum adaptation. Based on the findings, this research
recommends integrating structured cultural training into TESOL teacher education programs,
improving multicultural content in curricula, and fostering interactive classroom strategies that
promote intercultural competence. By addressing these gaps, TESOL practitioners can create more
equitable and effective learning environments that accommodate diverse student populations.

This study explores how deaf people, as a marginalized group, navigate their communication practices with the broader community. Therefore, co-cultural theory is used to see the complexity and nuanced communication applied by deaf people. To provide a phenomenological illustration, we conducted indepth interviews with four deaf Indonesians to discover their lived experiences related to their communicative practices. We found that none of the participants applied aggressive approaches, but they chose communication practices within the spectrum of nonassertive assimilation, assertive accommodation, and nonassertive separation. In addition, this research also shows a shift in the preferred outcome of communication from assimilation to accommodation with age. In order to better understand the dynamics of deaf people's communication practices, we also offer suggestions for future research.

KOKEVA Osaaja -hankkeessa on ollut tavoitteena kehittää ammatillista perustutkintokoulutusta järjestävien oppilaitosten ja työelämän yhteistyötä. Hankkeen toteutuksesta ja hallinnoinnista on vastannut Hämeen ammattikorkeakoulun (HAMK) Ammatillinen opettajakorkeakoulu. Toteutus ja toimenpiteet on suunniteltu yhdessä osallistujaoppilaitosten kanssa ja toiminta-aika on ollut 1.4.2008–31.12.2010. KOKEVA Osaaja -hanke on ollut osa Euroopan sosiaalirahaston Manner-Suomen toimenpideohjelman valtakunnallista osiota ja sen rahoittava viranomainen on ollut Opetushallitus. Rahoitusta on kerätty myös hankkeeseen osallistuneiden kunnallisten oppilaitosten ylläpitäjiltä. Hanke on sijoittunut kehittämisohjelman toimintalinjaan 3 Osaajana työmarkkinoille. Julkaisussa on kuvattu hankkeen toteutus ja esitelty sen kolme sisältöaluetta. Sisältöalueet ovat olleet Työpaikkaohjaajakouluttajien koulutus, Opettajien alakohtaisen substanssiosaamisen kehittäminen verkostossa ja Opettajan ohjatut työelämäjaksot

Tämän opinnäytetyön tarkoitus on käsiteanalyysin avulla kuvata ja määritellä kulttuurista kompetenssia käsitteenä hoitotyössä. Käsiteanalyysin aineisto valittiin tietokantahakujen perusteella ajankohtaisista (vuosilta 2000-2009) tutkimusartikkeleista. Valinkriteerinä oli tutkimuskysymykseen vastaaminen, eli mitä tarkoittaa kulttuurinen kompetenssi hoitotyössä. Aineistoksi valittiin 11 tutkimusartikkelia, ja ne analysoitiin Wilsonin (1969) käsiteanalyysimenetelmän avulla. Käsiteanalyysissa taulukoitiin esimerkkejä käsitteen käytöstä ja käsitteen ominaispiirteistä. Taulukon avulla kirjoitettiin tulokset. Käsiteanalyysin pohjalta kulttuurinen kompetenssi luokiteltiin neljään osa-alueeseen: kulttuurinen tieto, kulttuurinen herkkyys, kulttuurinen tietoisuus ja kulttuurinen taito. Kulttuurinen tieto tarkoittaa sairaanhoitajan kirjallisuudesta ja aikaisemmista kokemuksista hankkimaa tietoperustaa. Siihen kuuluu tieto kulttuurisista piirteistä, esimerkiksi arvoista, uskomuksista ja käytännöistä. Kulttuurinen herkkyys on kulttuurin näkemistä osana ihmisen tai ihmisryhmän elämää, ja kulttuurisesti herkkä sairaanhoitaja tunnistaa erilaisuuksien vaikutukset hoitosuhteeseen. Kulttuuriseen tietoisuuteen kuuluu tietoisuus siitä, miten ihmisen tai ryhmän kulttuuri muokkaa arvoja, uskomuksia ja käytäntöjä. Sairaanhoitaja tiedostaa eroavaisuudet kulttuuristen ryhmien välillä, eli moninaisuuden. Kulttuurinen taito käsittää viestinnän, kommunikoinnin ja kulttuurisen vuorovaikutuksen. Sairaanhoitaja pyrkii luomaan luottamuksellisen keskusteluilmapiirin ja näkee ei-verbaaliset viestit. Taidolliseen osa-alueeseen kuuluu luovuus, mikä tarkoittaa esimerkiksi kykyä löytää uusia ja vaihtoehtoisia toimintatapoja. Nämä osa-alueet sisältävät ohjeita, joita sairaanhoitajien tulee seurata saavuttaakseen kulttuurisen kompetenssin. Käsitettä kuvattiin myös prosessina, jonka seurauksena sairaanhoitaja saavuttaa kulttuurisen kompetenssin. Aineistosta kävi ilmi, että kirjallisuudessa on erimielisyyttä kulttuurisen kompetenssin tärkeydestä ja siitä, mikäli se pitäisi sisällyttää hoitotyön opintoihin. Yhteistä oli mielipide siitä, että sairaanhoitajien tulisi nähdä potilas kokonaisena ja tunnistaa potilaan kokemusten ainutlaatuisuus, eikä laittaa heitä ryhmään. Käsitteen määritelmän avulla voidaan tehdä jatkotutkimuksia kulttuurisen kompetenssin tarpeellisuudesta työelämässä ja hoitotyön opinnoissa.

Abstract: Current approaches to social work research have continued to push Black lives, bodies, experiences, and ways of doing, thinking, and being to the margins. When researchers do turn their attention to Black people and communities, so-called anti-oppressive and intersectional practices do little to center the humanity of their subjects. Instead, Black research subjects are objectified, othered, and silenced. Furthermore,  research often appeals to political climates steeped in anti-Blackness;  appeases the expectations of funders with their own biases and agendas; and paternalizes Black people and commodifies their realities rather than giving voice and honor to their truths. This article seeks to disrupt these colonial and Western approaches to research by challenging the systemic racism embedded in both our society and social work practice. With particular focus on some of the most vulnerable members of Black communities – 2SLGBTQ+ immigrants, refugees, women, and youth—the article explores research methodologies and practices rooted in theories that validate Black people’s ways of doing and being and decentres colonial values. As people experiencing oppression are best equipped to identify its ways of operating and pathways to disrupting it, Black and feminist theories are crucial to this work. This includes Critical Race Theory to disrupt the inherent racism in current research practices; Systemic Theory to examine how Black voices are silenced and sidelined to bury historical and contemporary truths; and  Black Feminist Theory to critique the way that women, queer, and gender nonconforming people are objectified.

El aprendizaje en las personas jóvenes está relacionado cada vez más a múltiples pantallas. Durante la pandemia por covid-19, esa inmersión se intensificó y amplificó, dejando al descubierto la diversidad de estrategias y recursos que despliegan las juventudes para aprender y resolver problemáticas de su vida cotidiana. Se identifica que tanto las relaciones con el saber que se tienden en la escuela como fuera de ella configuran entornos personales de aprendizaje que les permiten avanzar en la construcción de conocimientos. En este trabajo se propone caracterizar cómo los jóvenes construyen entornos personales de aprendizaje con herramientas digitales, sobre todo cómo dicha gestión permite entrever la potencial emergencia de un nuevo sujeto del conocimiento. De manera central, se caracteriza el papel que tienen los contenidos audiovisuales de YouTube en los entornos personales de aprendizaje de ingresantes a una carrera universitaria de computación en Argentina. A partir de una metodología cuantitativa, se realizaron 233 encuestas. Los principales hallazgos indican, por un lado, que en YouTube, además de entretenerse, los estudiantes encuestados encuentran y configuran una diversidad de respuestas a sus principales intereses y problemáticas estudiantiles. Por otro lado, tanto los canales que utilizan como los recursos que allí se gestionan permiten procesos cognitivos complejos, como abstraer y resolver problemas, entre otros.

In this chapter, I explore my intercultural communication experience within the realm of higher education. I use critical autoethnography and a narrative approach to story and re-story my experience in Colombia and in the United States within the field1 of education, and in doing so, I reveal a transnational scenario in which issues of identity, culture, communication, and power are revealed.
In storying, I turn my attention to experiential turning points and mundane situations which challenged and eventually reshaped my subjectivity. These storied events can be seen as signposts of a “cultural field” hitherto invisible to me, and their outcome as increased “cultural capital” and literacy within such a field. In re-storying, I return to the timeline of these events and ponder what I have left unsaid or taken for granted, thus correcting a desire to create a unified narrative where there can be many.
I am telling these events as they come to my memory. Therefore, they are organized, edited, and curated by personal, situated, institutional, and historical layers of understanding. Their truth value resides less on account- ing verily for an objective reality than on tracing how that reality is experienced and constructed intersubjectively. By means of this exploration, I come to understand the role interstitial spaces play in subverting hegemonic
power, transforming communication practices, and thus creating space for
emancipation.

El intercambio virtual o telecolaboración refiere a prácticas pedagógicas que conectan a estudiantes geográficamente distantes que trabajan juntos hacia un objetivo común. A pesar del creciente interés por las prácticas e investigaciones telecolaborativas, pocos estudios se han concentrado en investigar los géneros que emergen en dichos contextos. Este estudio comparte el entendimiento de que los géneros son eventos dirigidos a un objetivo organizados en patrones retóricos y utilizados por miembros de una comunidad discursiva. Su objetivo es explorar la primera sesión sincrónica entre parejas en un proyecto telecolaborativo dirigido al aprendizaje de idiomas, Teletándem, desde una perspectiva de género. Específicamente, este trabajo describe los patrones de organización retórica del género. Los datos fueron seleccionados de MulTeC (Multimodal Teletandem Corpus) y consisten en transcripciones de diez Sesiones Orales de Teletandem (itos por sus siglas en inglés) iniciales, el primer encuentro sincrónico de tres escenarios de aprendizaje que se llevaron a cabo en portugués e inglés y se registraron entre 2012 y 2015. La investigación involucró analizar cada transcripción para describir los patrones de género y discutir las especificidades en la organización de itos en relación con los escenarios de aprendizaje. Los resultados muestran que itos tiene una estructura flexible y dependiente del escenario en la que prevalecen las acciones de saludo y presentación, intercambio de información, negociación y despedida.

Este avance de investigación se concentra en las "Conexiones entre pensamiento, lógica y aprendizaje del inglés como lengua extranjera en estudiantes de contextos indígenas". Realizado en una escuela normal en la región Huasteca, donde la lengua náhuatl prevalece, se ha identificado una resistencia recurrente de estudiantes indígenas hacia el estudio del inglés, atribuida a la influencia del náhuatl y la necesidad de traducción a español para comprender las estructuras del inglés. El objetivo principal es entender la relación entre los procesos cognitivos de estos estudiantes y su aprendizaje del inglés. Integrando teorías de Piaget y Vygotsky, se explora cómo los esquemas mentales y el desarrollo cognitivo impactan la asimilación de una nueva lengua, junto con un análisis de teorías sobre aprendizaje de lenguas extranjeras.
Hasta ahora, la investigación ha recolectado datos relevantes de estudiantes de la escuela normal "De las Huastecas" mediante encuestas, enfocándose en licenciaturas interculturales. Los resultados preliminares se centran en identificar conexiones entre pensamiento, lógica y aprendizaje del inglés en este contexto, marcando la necesidad de comprender cómo los procesos cognitivos afectan el aprendizaje de inglés en estudiantes indígenas. Este resumen resalta los avances alcanzados y subraya la importancia de proponer estrategias para facilitar la adquisición de la lengua extranjera en este grupo específico.

In 2023/24, SOAS University of London launched the third year of its Co-Creator Internships Project (CCIP) scheme for undergraduates enrolled in the School. The purpose of these internships is to grow collaborative communities of practice, and to support developments in learning, teaching, and assessment. Appreciating the value of this attractive institutional opportunity, four members of the academic staff teaching on SOAS’s BA World Philosophies programme developed the UK’s first ever Decolonising Philosophy Curriculum Toolkit with four undergraduate students across the humanities and social sciences. The hope was that the toolkit would radically enhance ways in which philosophy is taught and learned at advanced secondary and tertiary education levels in the UK.

The Project’s output, as presented here, is in a handbook form rather than a short and concise guide to decolonising philosophy curricula. As the team’s work developed, we collectively realised that, beyond providing a practical manual (the toolkit), it was necessary to provide the theoretical underpinnings of what we have understood the work of decolonising philosophy to be. After all, doing needs to be accompanied by thinking. As such, in this document, you will find an overview of the historical, institutional, and political context in which we work and what moved staff towards developing the UK’s only ‘World Philosophies’ undergraduate degree programme; §1 an extended argument for why decolonising the philosophy curriculum is required; §2 a detailed guide to implementing critical
pedagogy in one’s practice; §3 an extended argument for decolonising assessment and formative activities in philosophy programmes; and §4 an example of how an epistemology module can be transformed to reflect decolonising principles as well as to provide students with a much richer account of the value and place of epistemological practices. Throughout the handbook, we have provided a list of references and additional sources to assist teachers and students in engaging with the recommendations we make.

The project is orientated around the following objectives:
▪ To face up honestly to and shed light on the ways in which Anglo-European racism, imperialism, and colonialism have adversely affected the organisation, learning content, classroom environment, formative learning activities, and summative assessment diet of philosophy curricula in the UK (and in the Anglo-European context more broadly). No one can reasonably deny that one of the multiple legacies of western imperial domination—especially the European colonisation of Africa, South Asia, South East Asia, North America, Central America, and South America8—has been (i) a racialised account of what counts as authoritative knowledge; (ii) a racialised account of whose knowledge matters; and (iii) a racialised account of what takes pride of place in what education institutions teach and how education institutions teach and assess that learning content.
▪ To offer constructive and implementable suggestions for expanding and transforming existing philosophy curricula at secondary and tertiary education levels, so that teachers and learners have richer, more in-depth, inclusive, and uplifting pedagogical experiences. This progressive discourse, as we will detail in subsequent sections, focuses on salient themes from critical
pedagogy.
▪ To provide teachers and learners with effective ways of, what we call, redirecting the flow of epistemic power away from the Anglo-European world that is ideologically positioned at the ‘centre’10 to a horizontal, comparative, and dialogical model in which no geolocation occupies a privileged position. In this way, thinking in terms of world philosophies is the sublation of philosophy itself, to the point that philosophy as the love of wisdom logically requires practicing deep thinking and reflection in a global, critical, and comparative manner.

English as a foreign language (EFL) programs necessarily address intercultural communication competence (ICC). As part of their learning outcomes, they seek to equip students with knowledge, attitudes, and communication skills to help them engage effectively in diverse sociocultural contexts. However, lack of critical intercultural awareness (CIA) is a key factor that hinders EFL teachers from promoting students' ICC. This article focuses on strategies to develop EFL teachers' CIA in the Indonesian higher education context by conceptually examining the in-progress formation of EFL teachers' CIA from two perspectives. First, how teaching intercultural education encourages EFL teachers' awareness and understandings of their own culture and worldview frameworks. Second, how developing syllabus documents on intercultural aspects and selecting interculturally appropriate learner-centred resources and pedagogical tasks can proactively promote ICC. Furthermore, the paper presents a sample activity to promote intercultural learning that can foster EFL teachers' CIA.

We illustrate how culture jam practitioners and pedagogues are responding to increasing commercial incorporation by using participatory communication strategies to bring the act of jamming back into the realm of relocating culture. We analyze the past decade's evolution of one of YouTube's first viral videos, "Where the hell is Matt?," and connect this case to ways university pedagogy might integrate culture jams as artifacts and assignments to empower students to use communication frameworks not only to critique the status quo but also to collaboratively generate transformation. Throughout, we elucidate culture jam processes as creative and cooperative performances of staying on one's toes in the perpetual renegotiation of hegemony.

Julkaisun tavoitteena on tuoda monipuolisesti esiin monikulttuurista työtä tekevien koulutuspilottiin osallistuneiden ammattilaisten näkemyksiä omasta ohjaustyöstään ja sen kehittämistarpeista. Artikkelikokoelma koostuu kolmesta osasta. Avausartikkeli kuvaa koulutuskokeilun toteutusta ja saatuja tuloksia. Tämän jälkeen käsitellään erilaisia pedagogisia valintoja monikulttuurisen ohjauksen toteutuksessa. Samalla tuodaan esiin, millä tavoin yhteistoiminta ja monimuotopedagogiikka ovat hyödynnettävissä monikulttuurisessa koulutuksessa ja opiskelijaryhmässä. Täydennyskoulutuksen käytännön toteutusta, koulutuksen sisältöjä ja koulutuspilotissa toteutettuja oppimistehtäviä kuvataan yksityiskohtaisesti. Lukijan on mahdollista hyödyntää oppimistehtäviä hyvin erilaisissa yhteyksissä ja erilaisille kohderyhmille. Toisessa osassa avataan kielitietoisuuden käsitettä, monialaista verkostotyötä, ohjaustyön etiikkaa sekä voimavaraistavaa ja osallisuutta vahvistavaa ohjaustyötä. Näitä ilmiöitä käsitteleviä opetussisältöjä avataan eri tieteenalojen kirjallisuutta hyödyntäen. Artikkeleissa tuodaan monipuolisesti esiin koulutuspilottiin osallistuneiden kuvauksia ja analyysejä omasta työstään. Julkaisun kolmas osa käsittelee omakielistä ohjausta ja uskontolukutaitoa. Omakielisen ohjauksen ja uskontolukutaidon teemat leikkaavat monikulttuurisen ohjauksen eri osa-alueita. Uskontolukutaito artikkeli on luonteeltaan monipuolisesti yleissivistävä ja avaa useita näkökulmia uskontojen merkitykseen tämän päivän maailmassa. Kokoelman päättää artikkeli, joka käsittelee monikulttuurista ryhmäohjausta korkeakouluissa ja Diakissa kehitettyä monikulttuurisen ryhmäohjauksen mallia. The element of culture has always existed in English language teaching processes and the materials used in this process, however, with today's reshaped communication purposes and forms of communication, intercultural communication has taken on the role of a skill that needs to be acquired in the language teaching and learning process. With increasing international interaction, there is a shift from communicative competence and cultural competence to intercultural communicative competence (ICC). ICC is a dynamic and multifaceted concept that refers to the ability to behave effectively and appropriately in various intercultural situations drawing upon specific intercultural knowledge, skills, attitudes and reflective practices (Deardorff, 2004). Within a similar definition, ICC is described as the advanced ability that enables effective and appropriate interaction among individuals with diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds (Fantini, 2009). Due to the dynamic and multifaceted nature of intercultural communication, it has not been possible to explain the concept of intercultural communicative competence with a single approach or model, nor has it been possible to determine the ICC levels of individuals using a single measurement tool, and research to determine the most effective and appropriate measurement tool has been increasing in recent years. Within this perspective, this study aims to compare the measurement tools used to determine the ICC levels of individuals in relation to the language teaching process in terms of characteristics such as the type of the measurement tool, its dimensions, items and purposes of use. Different intercultural communication questionnaires and scales developed by many researchers such as Sercu et al. (2005), Mirzaei and Forouzandeh (2013), Shirazi and Shafiee (2017), Kazykhankyzy (2019) and used to determine the level of intercultural skills of participants in different studies were comparatively examined in the study. This comparative study will be useful for future studies in order to use the right intercultural measurement tool in the right context.

This article is the result of our research into the concept of Critical Interculturality (CI) along with our professional pedagogical experience at the public-school level. The experience took place in two different regions in Colombia; Medellín, Antioquia, and Florencia, Caquetá. These experiences were initially systematized in a PhD seminar concerning Critical Intercultural theories. In this article, we first conceptualize CI from a Latin American perspective associated with patterns of power and hierarchical structures, while bringing to light other ways of being, living, and knowing. Then, we examine the current stage of Colombian scholarship on CI, which is increasingly being studied from the standpoint of theory rather than practice, within the context of English Language Teaching (ELT). Finally, we describe two experiences that highlight public school teachers' practices from a critical intercultural view, going beyond CI theory by categorizing and proving that it is possible to undertake authentic critical intercultural pedagogical experiences in the EFL/ELT field.

In theological publications, postulations supporting a return to pre-evangelization are increasingly appearing on the horizon. This term indicates the need to precede the proclamation of the Christian kerygma with the proper preparation of potential recipients of the Gospel, so that they can openly embrace the message of salvation with their faith. Pre-evangelization is thus already an evangelization, albeit an incomplete one, for it lacks the direct proclamation of the Word of God. Nowadays, pre-evangelization serves to inspire people to reflect on their existence and on the role of faith in their everyday life. Tähän velvoittaa myös Amsterdamin julistus, joka viittaa maahanmuuttajaystävällisten sairaaloiden ja kulttuurisesti pätevien organisaatioiden kehittämiseen. Tämä opinnäytetyö on osa suun terveydenhuollon koulutusohjelman hanketta: Näyttöön perustuvan monikulttuurisen suun terveydenhoitotyön kehittäminen. Este artículo pretende examinar la eficacia del Flipped Learning (FL) como metodología para enseñar asignaturas de inglés a alumnos de séptimo curso. El estudio sugiere que el FL fomenta un entorno de aprendizaje activo y atractivo al animar a los estudiantes a tomar el control de su proceso de aprendizaje. Mientras el profesor sigue siendo el principal facilitador, guía a los alumnos y les proporciona una evaluación continua y práctica. La investigación muestra que la aplicación del modelo FL promueve la participación de los estudiantes y la interacción con el profesor, mejorando así el compromiso de los estudiantes. La sección
de metodología de este artículo describe los procesos seguidos para recopilar datos, comenzando con un análisis bibliométrico para construir el estado del arte, seguido de un enfoque experimental para evaluar el método. Se utilizó una encuesta de escala Likert para medir las percepciones y opiniones de los estudiantes, demostrando ser un método eficaz de recogida de datos. Se utilizó un enfoque cuantitativo para evaluar las percepciones de los estudiantes sobre la FL. Los resultados revelan que FL es una metodología eficaz que mejora el compromiso, la motivación y los resultados de aprendizaje de los estudiantes. En consecuencia, el análisis sugiere que FL es un enfoque didáctico innovador que puede mejorar la motivación de los estudiantes y los resultados del aprendizaje mediante el diseño y la aplicación de estrategias pedagógicas innovadoras.

Although the three of us come from three different cultural heritages, we collectively identify as scholars of color who study media effects and intercultural communication. Trained as social scientists, we primarily use quantitative research methods such as experiments, surveys, and quantitative content analysis in our work. While traditional quantitative social scientific methods are not commonly associated with critical intercultural communication, in this chapter, we orient the reader to the main principles, theories, and methods that have been used within this area. Srividya's (Srivi) sense of culture while growing up in Chennai in South India was shaped by multilingualism, post-coloniality, and global trade liberalization. Her lived experiences as one of the few women at the Jesuit-run Loyola College informed her politics on gender, religion, and caste. When she moved to the United States for her doctoral education, she navigated multiple cultures and languages through code-switching, hybridization, frame switching, and mixing. 9/11 marked a new era of hate crimes that shaped her research on implicit racial bias and media literacy. Throughout her professional career, she has worked on building bridges across cultures, disciplines, methods, and communities for social justice and intergroup coalitions. A child of Nigerian immigrants, Omotayo's (Tayo) identity formation was informed by both her parents' heritage and her home culture, America. She initially distinguished herself by her family's language, food, dress, and music-all attributes of what defines culture. Her cultural identity was Nigerian American until while in college she was called a racial epithet which challenged her to more seriously and actively engage a self-concept that included her social identity and racial location. Fascinated by the interactions between self and social identity, her scholarship explores our interactions with our social identities and the contexts in which we engage with these layers. In this chapter, we provide an overview of the types of theories, concepts, and methods that are typically used within quantitative intercultural communication studies. Within social scientific approaches in communication, such quantitative research on intercultural communication is generally referred to as "intergroup communication." The aim of this study is to present some possibilities on the use of an Intercultural Communicative Language Teaching (ICLT) model to teach part of a unit of the textbook English File – third edition, pre-intermediate - under a critical intercultural perspective (CANDAU, 2020; PARDO, 2018; WALSH, 2009). As far as the teaching model is concerned, this study considers Tran and Duong’s (2018) suggestion of ICLT in order to promote, what we call, Critical Intercultural Performa- tivity, by using the textbook and authentic materials. This paper is or- ganized according to the following sections: 1) a reflection on cultural representations in English textbooks; 2) a discussion of the targeted part from the chosen unit under a critical intercultural perspective (PARDO, 2018); 3) the suggestion of an ICLT model to approach the part of this unit considering critical interculturality. The study concluded that cul- tural representations in the targeted unit of the textbook New English File (NEF) mostly depicted hegemonized knowledge – grounded in the common US-Europe west-centered duality – and it suggests a critical version of Tran and Duong’s (2018) ICLT model to use the textbook according to the realities of Brazilian learners.

This paper appraises design studies as part of teacher education and they are seen here as both a product and a process. Concept design has been applied when teaching the process of designing a product and paying attention to the viewpoint of the customer. However, I argue for the use of the intertextual art method because it offers an intercultural viewpoint for design education and promotes the understanding of plural meanings between cultures.-ended intercultural design learning process and a prognosis is made for the future based on this study.

This publication focuses especially on the role, tasks and challenges of teacher education in a multicultural society and world. It aims at drawing attention to the dangers of monoacculturation and ethnocentrism in education and to means of considering diversity in teacher education and teachers' work. The first task in the publication is to analyse the foundations of intercultural pedagogy: sociological, psychological, philosophical, educational and particularly ethical starting points. The second task is to describe the development of teacher education as an action research process in the University of Oulu and concentrate on some studies, which deal with the challenges of ethnic diversity in Finland. The first part of the publication deals with the theoretical foundations of intercultural pedagogy. It consists of seven articles which discuss the present-day challenges of teachers' profession and teacher education, the nature and role of nationality and identity in the multicultural world, competence and means that are needed in cultural border-crossing and various approaches to intercultural education. The second part of the publication describes first the action research process, which started at the teacher education department of Oulu University in the beginning of 1990's. The theory and practice of intercultural pedagogy has been developed particularly within the M.Ed. International Programme, which is a continuation of the action research process. After describing the phases of the process the publication discusses students' intercultural growth during the M.Ed. programme and in their previous life experiences. Finally the report draws attention to some minority groups which differ from the Finnish mainstream as to their culture and particularly ethnic origin. It discusses how these groups, cultures and individuals could be a more integral part of teacher education and Finnish school. The groups discussed are Roma-people, immigrants, refugees, children adopted from abroad and reentering Finns. The articles are composed by the members of the research group which studies education and multicultual issues from an ethical point of view. The report is funded by the Academy of Finland (projects 77771 and 73261).

Tässä artikkelissa tarkastellaan yliopisto-opiskelijoiden esittämiä kriittisiä puheenvuoroja sukupolviajattelun näkökulmasta. Taustalla on tulkinnallista fenomenologiaa hyödyntävä haastattelututkimus, johon osallistui 27 eri aloja edustavaa yliopisto-opiskelijaa. Analyysin perusteella aineistosta muodostui kolme fenomenologista yläteemaa, jotka kuvaavat opiskelukokemusten jännitteitä: ajallinen jousto vs. aikataulujen pitävyys, vastuun antaminen vs. tuki ja merkityksellisyys vs. hyödyllisyys. Jännitteitä tarkasteltiin suhteessa Y-sukupolvea koskeviin aiempiin tutkimushavaintoihin. Esitämme artikkelissa, että opiskelijoiden kriittistä puhetta ei tulisi kutistaa vain yksittäisten kurssien negatiiviseksi palautteeksi tai kehittämisehdotuksiksi. Kriittiselle puheelle ja kommentoinnille tulisi löytää tilaa opintojaksojen sisältä, jolloin ne nähtäisiin toisin tekemisen ja uudenlaisten oppimisen tilojen luomisena. Tutkimuksen päätelmissä pohdimme sukupolvikokemusten merkitystä opiskelijoiden osallisuuden, merkityksen ja mielekkyyden kokemuksiin. Näiden keskiöön nousee toive opintojen autenttisuudesta, jolloin opiskelijan identiteettikertomus ja hänen oma potentiaalinsa huomioitaisiin entistä laajemmin koulutuksellisina lähtökohtina. Autenttisuus näyttäytyi käytännössä tarpeena rakentaa osallisuutta yhdessä opettajien ja toisten opiskelijoiden kanssa.

I write my own story of bouncing forward as a graduate teaching assistant highlighting the fact that adaptation is not resilience. As a Brown, Muslim, female teaching assistant, Iam permanently discriminated against while teaching Undergraduate students. I have received poor semester feedback and discouraging comments through all the semesters I taught. I was feeling fine with all that until after a sordid incident shook my soul. I feel I should share what it feels like to pretend you are resilient as a doctoral student whereas you are permanently struggling to adapt yourself to be competent enough to teach your American students. My autoethnographic reflections reflect the modern survival of minoritized graduate students in the United States.

Introduction: The operating environment in the social-, health care, and rehabilitation sector is continuously changing and evolving. In order to ensure the availability of qualified educators in the future, constant reform of health science teacher education and systematic development of competence in social-, health care, and rehabilitation is needed. Purpose: The TerOpe project aimed to develop national and internationally comparable competence requirements for social-, health care, and rehabilitation educators, and to create a competence development model for educators' systematic career development. Besides, the project developed an online course in digital pedagogy and a digital competence network for educators, educators' trainers and students in the field. Methods: The TerOpe project was part of nationwide government key projects. The project involved six universities and one university of applied sciences, funded by the Ministry of Education and Culture in 2017-2019. It was implemented in four phases: 1) development of the educator competence model and its requirements; 2) building an educator competence development model; (3) development and piloting of a digital course in digital education for social-, health care, and rehabilitation education; 4) development and piloting of a digital competence network. Results: The project developed an evidence-based model for the competence of social-, health care and rehabilitation educators. The project also developed competence requirements for the educators, a model of educator competence development, an online course in digital pedagogy, and a digital competence network for educators, educators' trainers and students in the field. Besides, the project developed and tested three self-assessment instruments: The Health and Social Care Educator's Competence (HeSoEduCo), Continuous Professional Development of Educators (EduProDe), and Digital Competence of Educators (DigCompEduF). Conclusions: The social-, health care, and rehabilitation educators' model and competence requirements can be utilized to revise health science education curricula nationwide, and to develop collaborative and cross-curricular education. The educator competence development model describes a multi-level approach, based on which educator competence development takes place in teacher education, in education policy-making, at the strategic level of education organizations, in close-knit leadership of individual educators and in teams.

TIIVISTELMÄ n Erityisherkkyyden käsite on tullut viime vuosina tutuksi popularisoidusta tietokirjallisuudesta. Tieteellisestikin käsite on kiinnostava mutta näyttäytyy monimuotoisesti useiden eri käsitteiden alla, joita yhdistävät yksilöiden väliset herkkyyserot ja herkkyys ympäristölle. Tässä artikkelissa käsittelemme herkkyyden ilmiötä ja tuomme esille siihen liittyvää tieteellistä käsitteistöä sekä kotimaista ja kansainvälistä tutkimusta. Vuorovaikutuksellisena, yhteisöllisenä ja yhteiskunnallisena ulottuvuutena hahmottelemme esiin niin kutsuttua olemisen kehystä, olemisen ja toiminnan ympäristöä, jossa yksilö toimii, kasvaa ja kehittyy. Yksilölliset olemisen kehykset avaavat näkymiä kohti herkkyydeltään erilaisten ihmisten toimijuutta ja toiminnan mahdollisuuksia. Tämä on uusi avaus, joka kohdentuu yksilön ja ympäristön välisen vuorovaikutussuhteen sekä sen laadun tarkastelemiseen yksilölliset herkkyyserot huomioiden. Hyvinvoinnin ja kulttuurin välinen suhde on herättänyt runsaasti keskustelua Suomessa ja maailmalla. Etelä-Pohjanmaalla kulttuurin hyvinvointivaikutuksista ollaan oltu kiinnostuneita maakuntatasolla jo vuosia. Myös tietyt alueen kunnat ovat ottaneet aihepiirin omakseen. Erityisesti Lapuan kaupunki on ollut aktiivinen toimija. Lapuan kaupunki toimi myös päätoteuttajana Kulttuurinen huolenpito-hankkeessa, jonka osana tämä Kulttuurinen huolenpito-Näkökulmia kulttuuristen hyvinvointipalveluiden kehittämiseen Lapuan kaupungissa-raportti on toteutettu. Hankkeen päärahoitus on tullut Euroopan Unionin Leader-varoista. Rahoituksen on myöntänyt Aisapari ry. Raportissa esitellään kulttuurin ja hyvinvoinnin välistä yhteyttä alan tutkimuskirjallisuuden valossa. Tämän lisäksi tutustutaan kotimaisiin ja kansainvälisiin esimerkkeihin niistä keinoista, joiden avulla voidaan tuottaa kulttuurisia hyvinvointipalveluita. Raportin loppupuolella hahmotellaan sitä, kuinka hyvinvointia voitaisiin lisätä Lapuan kaupungissa kulttuurin keinoin. This paper identifies "diaspora philanthropy" as an important dimension to maintaining transnational identities among South Asian Indian Americans. Several South Asian initiatives and organisations promote involvement to the motherland (homeland) as individuals negotiate a sense of belonging in a migrant context. It is important to explore the motivations behind this new type of socio-political activism that is fuelled by a sense of responsibility to the motherland. I examine three non-government South Asian Indian organisation websites that are shaped by globalisation as a means to explore new trends in diaspora philanthropy. A critical intercultural communication framework is used to explore how this US immigrant community negotiates intergenerational experiences that challenge and reassert their hybrid identities.

Shonda Rhimes’ latest televisual sensation updates her post-racial and post-feminist fantasies for a post-Trump world. Discarding her trademark colorblind casting, Bridgerton confronts racial tensions and gender disparities within a fanciful reimagining of the aristocracy of colonial Britain. Yet, in a move familiar to longtime viewers of Shondaland, the means of resistance to such injustice is gratuitous displays of interracial relationships. Bridgerton constructs a historical fantasy that centers authentic love and desire as the exclusive mechanism for constructing a post-racial and post-feminist society. Through love, the English aristocracy is transformed into a permissive, racially inclusive matriarchy wherein one’s duty is to live and love authentically. While previous scholarship has contextualized Rhimes’ work within neoliberalism, I argue that the racial and gendered politics of Bridgerton are more adeptly understood through Fisher’s theory of capitalist realism, which describes contemporary capitalism’s investment in mystifying authority and equating authentic consumption with identity construction.
