Chinese Society

The articles in this special issue all are based on original fieldwork in China. The authors made presentations on their work in a session at the Society for Applied Anthropology Annual Meeting in Vancouver BC, on March 29, 2006. Since that time we have shared drafts of our manuscripts and integrated our work to illustrate both the diversity of the development enterprise in China and common themes emerging from indigenous norms and social structures.

China is successfully moving Tibet into modernity with Chinese characteristics. Tibetans no longer live in a timeless present, they have now entered history, thanks to the benevolence of the Party. In Xinjiang in 2014, Xi Jinping ordered the mass incarceration of millions of Uighurs in hastily built concentration camps, an order that took time to become public. For the Tibetans and the Uighurs the bottom line is the same: your traditional identity, culture and values are no longer permissible, frontier construction theory 顶层设计 classifies you as security dangers.

Le recueil de caricatures antichrétiennes de Zhou Han (1842-1911) 280 , intitulé Jinzun shengyu bixie quantu , ou Ensemble d images qui chassent les esprits malfaisants en signe de respect aux édits de l empereur 281 , sous forme de pamphlet virulent et agressif, nous présente un aperçu intriguant de l histoire anti-chrétienne, ou plus largement anti-occidentale en Chine à la fin du e siècle. L impression et la diffusion de ces oeuvres entre 1891 et 1897 se situent entre deux événements historiques qui ont bouleversé l « empire du Milieu » : la Révolte des Taiping (1851-1864) et la Révolte des Boxeurs (1899-1901). Tous deux sont étroitement liés à la présence du christianisme en Chine et la relation conflictuelle sino-européenne. En outre, la mort de son auteur Zhou Han en 1911 coïncide justement avec la chute de la dernière dynastie chinoise, d origine mandchoue : les Qing (1644-1912). The excellent traditional Chinese family culture is relied upon, and Xi Jinping’s ecological civilization thought is used as a guide to introduce the new environmental ethics theory framework of ‘home-centrism’, aiming to reconcile the divergence between ecocentrism and anthropocentrism on the issue of human-nature relationship and provide a new perspective for advancing the construction of ecological civilization. Through comparative analysis, the advantages and limitations of the two traditional positions at the ontological, epistemological, and axiological levels are elucidated. The rich ecological connotation of ‘home-centrism’ is defined from the perspective of ecological metaphor. The relationship between people is seen as that of family members, and the relationship between people and nature is depicted as the relationship of home construction. Lastly, the application prospects of this new theoretical framework in future human-land relationship research and ecological civilization construction are discussed, providing valuable reference for the theory and practice of ecological civilization.

This article explores the transnational interaction of early modern Korean literature with special attention to the practice of "censorship." By examining media control by the government authorities in both late Chosŏn Korea and late imperial China, this study aims to examine how the state and policymakers attempted to control the flow of unorthodox books and how the production of books epitomized the cultural values of the day. "What value system prompted the authorities to forbid a certain body of texts?" "What agencies were instrumental in the circulation of books?" By analyzing various travelogues to Beijing (yŏnhaengnok) and notes on poetry (sihwa), this article examines how the transnational interaction between China and Korea and changing textual environments influenced the production of literature in late Chosŏn. Using a specific case study of Yi Tŏng-mu (1741-1793), this article demonstrates that various "informal networks" outside of conventional channels functioned as the actual key drivers of book culture. In particular, a number of "book brokers" in the Qing and Chosŏn facilitated the distribution of forbidden books. My study on these circulatory dynamics reveals how negotiations between the control of media and the distributing of books influenced the textual environments and how the cultural value system shaped the production of literature.

Now today We'll talk about pre-Qin history.This's my hope that this lecture will provide a comprehensive overview of our current understanding of the pre-Qin history and catch the most discussions currently within the discipline. This lecture is going to be covers ancient China from 2000 BC to 100 BC, it was called Pre-Qin history period.In China when we talk about before 2000 BC, it always belongs to the field of archaeological research, not the research scope of our Pre-Qin history. In other words, it is related to the study of the origin of Chinese civilization before 2000 BC. So let's start by looking at the dynastic periods of ancient China, I've given you a pie chart, Here to see how much time each of them took up in this 2000 years period. So starting with the Xia dynasty. There are rough dates 2000 BC roughly to 1600 BC, may have been earlier. But Let's just say 400 years. The Xia is more of a legendary dynasty. There's actually no physical evidence, there's no archaeological, or historical evidence in writing from that period.

The past is a foreign country, they do things differently there." 哻 Chinese medical history is a new and flourishing field in Taiwan. A majority of the publications in this area have appeared in academic journals only in the past ten years, and the community is fairly small. Nevertheless these scholars have circulated quite a few reflections on their own research and their works have undergone a number of reviews in different occasions. 哷 This may have several reasons, ranging from the activeness of the participants to their needs to clarify and to defend their research interest in the academic community at large. Since most of the pioneers are trained as historians, and their followers are junior scholars in the field, they face challenges not only from their more conventional colleagues but also from medical professionals, who often consider physicians the best qualified to do medical history. Shengkun Chen , a medical doctor with a master , s degree in history, claimed just that in his publication, which stimulates a historian , s The Past as a Foreign Country: Recent Research on Chinese Medical History in Taiwan 哻 "The past is a foreign country. They do things differently there" is the opening sentence of L.P. Hartley , s novel The Go-between (New York: New York Review Books Classics, 1953Classics, /1996)). David Lowenthal, a British historian, uses the phrase for the title of his book, The Past is a Foreign Country (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1985), which focuses on the way modern people make use of historical material to their present interest, especially in the Anglo-American civilization, and the author , s somewhat disapproval of it. This review, although not disagreeing with Lowenthal , s assessment on modern history and historiography, applies the novel , s opening sentence to denote another dimension in historical research in which the foreignness of the past is taken seriously enough that historians feel compelled to conduct an anthropological observation in order to overcome the difficulties of understanding those who lived in the worlds before us. This foreignness and the efforts involved to overcome it may have and perhaps should have existed in historical research in general, but they are, as will be shown in this review, particularly evident when scholars in Taiwan work on the history of Chinese medicine. 哷These reviews take various forms from correspondence notes in academic newsletters to review articles in conference and academic journals. Les aspects économiques du bouddhisme dans la société chinoise du V e au X e siècle was first published in Saigon in . Since then it has been reprinted several times, and indeed it helped shape the field of medieval Chinese studies. Its author, Jacques Gernet, has gone on to a long and world-renowned career as a historian of China. In , Columbia University Press reissued this work in an English translation by Franciscus Verellen (with only slightly updated notes and a supplemental bibliography). There is no doubt that in the s this book was of ground-breaking and seminal importance. The question, however, is whether this study, or perhaps any work of historical scholarship, is worth republishing some forty years later.

Abstract of a lecture at Ming Chuan University, Taiwan, 23 April 2024:
- Politics is not only about rational considerations and cold-blooded calculus - to a large extent, psychology needs to be factored in as well. It would be expedient to gauge the psychological underpinnings and implications of self-image, too.
- Relations between the PRC and Taiwan are routinely seen as an equation based on an extremely complex, but fundamentally rational, strategic calculus through a double prism: (A) Beijing’s national integration vision and pursuit to absorb Taiwan; and (B) the great power competition between China and the U.S. However, there may well be an additional - and less rational - layer of factors that relates to the way the PRC and Taiwan view
themselves and make their choices.
- The dominance of economic arguments, military concerns and geopolitical imperatives risks downplaying key societal features on both sides of the Taiwan strait. These attributes are not mere footnotes in the debate about the state of the global economy or the narrative of great power competition - the psychological dimension is also part of the overall equation around the dispute over the status of Taiwan.

The most recent version of the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) consensus guidelines for the treatment of patients with metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) was published in 2016, identifying both a more strategic approach to the administration of the available systemic therapy choices, and a greater emphasis on the use of ablative techniques, including surgery. At the 2016 ESMO Asia Meeting, in December 2016, it was decided by both ESMO and the Japanese Society of Medical Oncology (JSMO) to convene a special guidelines meeting, endorsed by both ESMO and JSMO, immediately after the JSMO 2017 Annual Meeting. The aim was to adapt the ESMO consensus guidelines to take into account the ethnic differences relating to the toxicity as well as other aspects of certain systemic treatments in patients of Asian ethnicity. This paper examines the effect of citizens' perceived salience of inequality on political trust in East Asian new democracies. The link between inequality and trust in new democracies has yet to receive appropriate attention in empirical research. We argue that citizens' perceived salience of inequality has a trust-eroding effect where increasing inequality is a politically salient issue and there is a norm of fairness among the citizenry. When citizens perceive that the government and political elites are responding to the citizens' demand for fair shares, citizens' political trust increases. Our analysis of the 2006 Asia Barometer data finds that perceived salience of inequality has a negative effect on political trust among the citizens in Taiwan, but not in Korea. Our results suggest that the political salience of inequality on citizens' minds is of crucial importance for political trust and political consequences of inequality has to do with the pace of rising inequality and the norms of distributive justice.

How and why people support or disapprove of governmental responses to public crises, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, is an important issue in public opinion research. Since 2020, China's strict anti-COVID policy has protected lives but faced resistance. Drawing on Chinese General Social Survey (CGSS) 2021 data, we investigated the covariates associated with the support for the anti-COVID measures in China, arguing that “critical citizens” (measured by university-level education) and “discontented citizens” (measured by perceptions of fairness) were more likely to disapprove of the anti-pandemic measures, and political trust would moderate the association. The findings showed that less educated and more satisfied citizens supported the government measures no matter what, whereas educated and discontented citizens showed conditional support—only when they had high political trust. These findings suggest reasons for the backlash to China's zero-COVID policy and have broader implications for political trust and public opinion research.

With these attitude and approach for uplifting Chinese economy , he came out with the policy of 对外 开放( open door policy ). With the commencement of this liberal policies, China witnessed a high speed growth with the increase in double digit economic growth.Interaction with the outside increased in leap and bounds, china was changing every day so was the Chinese society and the attitude of the more volatile youth. They started embracing foreign especially western culture. With the above background , this paper will try to analysize the Change in the Youth attitude in the beginning of the comic reform(1979-1989). This paper will try to answer following: 1. How was changing society reacting with the change in basic economic structure of China? 2. How youth were negotiating between the tradition and modernisation in this period?

People need efficient means to communicate at a distance, but the available means to message can be inadequate. Any sent message might be perceived too little, fail to convey the intended emotion, or be received in a place, time or fashion that the sender would not prefer. There is room for new types of Computer-mediated communication. The thesis is an exploratory, mixed-methods study on a futuristic concept, where augmented-reality technology is used to send a lively and intelligent virtual animal character to enrich a message. The study goals are to find if the concept is acceptable, recognize common use cases for the messaging-characters, and to recognize if participants can identify different levels of independence to act, i.e. agency, for characters. As China's economic power continues to globalize, more and more Chinese companies and people are going overseas to explore new opportunities. In contrast to the existing research that focuses on the overseas operations of Chinese companies or general immigration phenomena, this study focuses on an emerging group of young entrepreneurs in Africa. Based on three exemplary case studies, this paper attempts to explore these young people's reasons for going to Africa, their strategies for coping with difficulties, and their gradually formed new lifestyles and self-awareness. The study finds that this group has a stronger "entrepreneurial spirit" than the domestic mobile

El artículo habla del envejecimiento de la población china y los problemas que esto conlleva debido a que, en este país, el desarrollo y el envejecimiento no van de la mano. Examina las actitudes tomadas hacia la vejez en un país donde el respeto y el cuidado de los mayores son considerados esenciales de acuerdo con el código moral confuciano, siendo éste el respaldo de los valores tradicionales de la sociedad china. De esta manera, en el pasado, el cuidado de los ancianos era considerado una responsabilidad de la familia. Hoy en día, como resultado de una planificación familiar con medidas estrictas que tuvieron como consecuencia una familia más pequeña, de la mano con un nuevo entorno económico, se han creado situaciones que obligan al gobierno a tomar medidas que aseguren el bienestar de los mayores, tarea que se está llevando a cabo pero que resulta difícil de alcanzar.

Economic life in the PRC today is marked by rapid privatization, marketization, and urbanization. This triad of forces effects a profound restructuring of China"s urban spaces and is giving rise to new forms of private, voluntary associations of citizens such as neighborhood campaigns of resistance to urban redevelopment. Civil society theory ascribes to such organizations outside of state control, the potential to constrain government officials by enabling citizens to express their collective interests more effectively, and to resist government encroachment more powerfully than they otherwise could. Because resort to China"s courts has produced little protection for citizens" formal legal rights in the event of forced demolition, relocation, and compensation, urban homeowners have resorted to extra-legal modes of resistance including protests, petitions, and confrontations-some of them deadly. This article assesses the potential to construct an "accountable development" frame as a set of strategies to channel resentment and resistance into bargained-for development agreements-situated between the market and the state, neither anti-regimist nor stymied by the "turn from law." The Chinese family policies are shaped by the country's political, socioeconomic, and cultural contexts and have evolved over the years. China has passed its most significant family policies and laws in marriage; child rearing; child, women, and elderly protection; family planning; and health care in the past 60 years. This chapter will cover the most important laws and policies that affect Chinese families from 1950 to 2010. The discussion focuses on policy development, implementation and analysis, and the challenges China faces in relation to these policy issues.

This article will scrutinize the social aspects of smoking in Qing China, and examine the perceptions of tobacco among different social strata and groups. The opening part of the article tells the history of tobacco in China, its accommodation and expansion. The remaining part, based on written (literary essays and poetry) and pictorial sources (woodcuts), reveals distinctions in the habits of the elite and commoners, the differences between women’s or men’s smoking habits, the attitudes of traditional medicine toward tobacco, etc.

He is the coordinator of an ESRC-funded project (2012-2015) entitled 'Where Rising Powers Meet: Russia and China at their northeast Asian border'. He previously carried out research in Mongolia where he investigated the prevalence of anti-Chinese sentiments.

The interconnection of renewable energies increases the complexity of modern power systems. Hence, stability assessments should be made to ensure the system's stability after penetration. Solar power is a type of renewable energy that has become a widespread energy source among renewable energy sources. About 1 MWp of the solar power plant has been prepared to be interconnected to the IEEE 8 bus of Manokwari grid, and this paper investigates the voltage profile, power losses, and stability of the solar power plant penetration using an adaptive kernel density estimator (AKDE) and compares it to a Monte Carlo simulation (MCS)-based probabilistic load flow (PLF). About 5000 samples have been used to test the grid after the connection. Results of simulations show that the solar penetration can reduce power losses from 0.4084 MW to 0.3080 MW and 0.3045 MW by the proposed method and MCS method, respectively, and further increase the bus voltage profile. The power network has the stability to be connected to solar power, as indicated by the small stability index values of each bus. The proposed method using the AKDE method has a more accurate result in stability indices indicated by small fast voltage stability index (FVSI), line stability index (Lmn), and line stability factor (LQP) indices.

The paper presents two distinct theoretical imaginations of relationships between man and society from the perspective of space, rooted in the western and Chinese sociological thoughts. The connection between space and personality in Simmel’s writings constitutes one of the most important foundations in Western sociological thoughts. The concept of “marginal man”, crafted by Chicago School sociologists and built on Simmel’s theoretical insights, becomes the prototype of the modern personality in western context. Equally importantly, the “marginal man” also becomes the image of an ideal modern man projected by early Chinese sociologists trained and influenced by western sociological thoughts. One prominent sociologist in Republican period, Ching chao Wu understands migration in China as a journey of marginal man, and envisions a personality freed from rural village life and enriched by diversified cultures in urban society. Wu further prescribes nationalism as a cure to the inner turmoil of the marginal man caused by conflicts between cultures, a typical challenge in American urban life. The writings of another prominent sociologist, Quentin Pan, presents a different understanding of special relationship between man and society. He identifies the unit of migration as the “bloodline” instead of an individual. By migrating, “the migrant ancestor” avoids adverse selection caused by extreme familism and rigid class structure, consequently cultivates a wholesome bloodline, which produces descendants with a keen sense of empathy and social justice, as carriers of the Confucian ideal personality who changed the local mores for the better. The migrant ancestor’s withdrawal from society presents a striking contrast to the marginal man’s invasion into space. The paper concludes that “the migrant ancestor” constitutes another prototype of personality parallel to “the marginal man” in understanding social processes including but not limited to urbanization, and deeply rooted in Chinese sociological thoughts.

Este artículo describe la política de planificación familiar en la República Popular China hasta 1979. La política de un solo hijo es enmarcada dentro de los rasgos más sobresaliente de la sociedad china, resaltando el papel de la estructura familiar y de los mecanismos tradicionales y contemporáneos de control social. Los autores demuestran que a pesar del éxito relativo de la campaña de planificación familiar en las áreas urbanas, el gobierno chino aún no ha alcanzado las metas que se propuso. Esta situación es explicada, en términos históricos, por los ritmos de la tasa de fecundidad, y en términos ideológicos, por el peso de una determinada estructura familiar tradicional. La investigación se basa fundamentalmente en fuentes chinas, así como en el propio trabajo de campo de los autores.

Through a historically contextualized reading of a ninth-century tale structured by a quest for underwater treasures led by foreign merchants from the coast of the South Sea, this paper unpacks its logic of representation in its more fantastic elements. It presents a case study in which the ludic mode of culture (as first articulated by Johan Huizinga) extended into the literary imagination offers an interpretive framework. The narrative, both archetypal in its overall structure and unusual in its details, improvises upon existing systems of knowledge such as 1) Daoist-inflected ideas of agricultural grain and dietetics, of corporeal parasites and longevity, and 2) understanding of the economic theory of the ben-mo dichotomy. These forms of play with regimes of knowledge culminates in an unconventional twist on the roles of foreigners (huren) as navigators in a search for sea-borne treasure, again suggesting an imaginative reconceiving of the maritime commerce flourishing in ninth century China.

The present study aims to provide a thorough investigation into the reception of Chinese disaster poetry via new media platforms. By employing a combination of qualitative and quantitative analyses, this research endeavors to delve into the levels of audience engagement and the perceptions surrounding this particular form of poetry. By conducting a thorough examination of a curated collection of poems, we are able to discern the profound themes of loss, resilience, and the indomitable human spirit that are vividly portrayed in Chinese disaster poetry. This analysis serves to emphasize the enduring cultural significance and remarkable literary depth of this genre. Building upon the qualitative findings, an analysis of survey data collected from a sample of 50 online users offers valuable empirical insights into the behaviors, preferences, and perceptions of audiences in relation to Chinese disaster poetry within the digital realm. The survey findings provide valuable insights into the changing landscape of literary consumption and cultural expression in the digital age, covering various aspects such as frequency of access, platform preferences, and engagement with online communities. Through the integration of qualitative and quantitative methodologies, the present study enhances our comprehension of the reception of Chinese disaster poetry. This research makes a valuable contribution to the existing body of knowledge in the fields of Chinese literature, digital culture, and disaster studies.

Online chatting lacks live physical non-verbal interaction, causing communication difficulties and conflicts. Emojis (emoticons), a visual language that simulates non-verbal cues, are gaining popularity among young people, particularly Chinese students. However, few studies have used WeChat data to study their pragmatic functions. This study employs a qualitative research design, by drawing on chat-logs from 20 Chinese undergraduate students aged between 20-25 years old. Six pragmatic functions of emojis are found to be principally operative, namely attitude/ emotion signalling, speech act emotion signalling, attitude/emotion intensity enhancement, illocutionary force modification, joking, irony. This study sheds light on the profile of the users of emojis, while aiding the identification of the intended meaning of the sender.

Dating app use is prevalent among non-single Chinese gay men. Applying domestication theory, this study explores how dating apps can be accepted in gay romantic relationships. The author argues that the domestication of technological artifacts unfolds on four dimensions: the practical, the symbolic, the cognitive, and the relational. Findings show that dating apps serve a dual role: a pool of sexual or romantic alternatives and a channel to the gay community. Although the former constitutes a threat to monogamy, the latter leaves room for a couple’s negotiation for acceptable but restricted uses. This negotiation is in tandem with the negotiation of relational boundaries, which leads to either the reinforcement of monogamy or the embrace of non-monogamy. Meanwhile, one can perceive dating apps to be as unremarkable as other social media platforms. This article investigates how sanqu composition modifies the social contract of poetic composition in how a text is mediated between authorship and social identity, through a close analysis of Jia Zhongming's sanqu songs written in the supplement to The Register of Ghosts. It challenges the conventional reading of Jia's songs as reliable sources of biographical information on individual playwrights to whom those songs are dedicated and argues instead that, if read together as a whole, they represent a catalog of various personas Jia constructs for the social role of playwright. The authorial figure that plays a central role in more polite poetic genres is reduced to a faceless and easily replaceable mannequin with a name tag on it-be it Guan Hanqing, Wang Shifu, or any other name-in Jia's sanqu songs, only to foreground the fashioning of the playwright's social role from his particular perspective. The role Jia Zhongming constructs for the playwright displays the imprint of urban commercial theater as well as the influence of the state and elite values. Therefore, the true value of Jia's songs lies in how they help us better understand the condition of playwrights in Jia's time. Moreover, a proper interpretation of Jia's songs also helps us better understand the performativeness of sanqu as a genre.

Rocking China traces the rise and spread of indie rock scenes from the rock capital of Beijing to Shanghai and many other cities in China. Through interviews with key players in these scenes over a period of twenty years, Andrew Field explores the meanings of rock music in Chinese society as well as the many challenges and obstacles to the development of indie rock scenes in China. Highlights include a journey by rail into the heartlands of China with the hardcore rock band SUBS and legendary “rock godfather” Cui Jian. Along the journey to document the live rock music scenes of Beijing, he discovered an emerging world of musicians, bands, clubs, festivals, promoters, record shop and record label owners that were pushing the envelope of indie music for China and the world. The Chinese family policies are shaped by the country's political, socioeconomic, and cultural contexts and have evolved over the years. China has passed its most significant family policies and laws in marriage; child rearing; child, women, and elderly protection; family planning; and health care in the past 60 years. This chapter will cover the most important laws and policies that affect Chinese families from 1950 to 2010. Purpose-The purpose of this paper is to examine the health sector reform toward 2040 of Japan as a super-aged society. Design/methodology/approach-This paper discusses the current healthcare policies adopted in Japan and projects the challenges in future as a super-aged society. Findings-Through Japanese experiences, it is considered that Community-based Integrated Care System is useful, which takes into account the perspective of health care users. Being a super-aged society, it is essential for Japan to have more consensus by further removing obstacles, and paying attention to the change of paradigm and the purpose of care. Originality/value-Based on the case of Japan, this paper serves as a reference for other East Asian countries, which would sooner or later encounter the similar situation of becoming super-aged societies in the 21 st century.

Despite their number in East Asia never exceeding 36,000 (currently around 10,000), Jews there are the subject of both distinctly strong positive and negative views. The presence of these attitudes is astounding not only because most of those who hold them have never come across a Jew, but also because the region misses most of the 'classical' motives for either philosemitism or antisemitism. An analysis of contemporary attitudes towards Jews in China, Japan and South Korea, including reactions to the still ongoing Israel-Hamas war, reveals that the distinctions between antisemitism and philosemitism are more blurred and nuanced than is often acknowledged. In East Asia, these two attitudes tend to reflect similar functions, and people often express both views without being aware of their historical and religious context elsewhere. Accordingly, this study by Kowner, Ainslie and Podoler calls for a reassessment of antisemitism beyond the Christian and Islamic spheres, to address this new and changing world.

Qian Daosun (1887-1966) was imprisoned for collaborating with the Provisional Government in North China under Japanese occupation, and to this day he is labelled as hanjian (traitor). Yet, Qian was first and foremost a cultural literatus, librarian, and an exceptional translator with an in-depth understanding of Japanese culture and languages. This article examines the crucial role that Japan and the Japanese language played for Chinese cultural literati in their quest to save China. It also brings to the forefront the dilemmas and agonizing choices Qian faced in his attempt to promote Sino-Japanese cultural exchange in the midst of war, in particular as a librarian. Wartime libraries are highly contested sites of selection, destruction, censorship, preservation, confiscation, and knowledge production. An added layer of complexity was Japan's cultural policy in China that promoted Japanese-language collections and governed libraries such as the Beijing 1 Modern Science Library where Qian worked. What exacerbated Qian's dilemmas was his upbringing, which led him to form close personal connections with like-minded Japanese literati. Lastly, this article revisits the hanjian label by comparing Qian's fate to that of other librarians and returned students of Japan, such as May Fourth writer Lu Xun and patriotic bibliophile Zheng Zhenduo. By deliberately examining May Fourth writers alongside hanjian and Japanese intermediaries, the intention is to dismount arbitrary labels and divisions that have set them apart and against each other in the resistance versus collaboration dichotomy.

Synopsis-This article examines issues of naming and defining violence against women in the context of Chinese societies. The first part discusses the differences between feminist and crime approaches to defining violence against women. The second part presents the findings of a focus group study which aimed to examine how Chinese people define and make sense of the term violence against women. Our study shows that the power of the term lies in turning people's attention from violence in general to violence directed against women. However, the use of the term violence tends to limit Chinese people's conception to the use of brute force (bao-li). It is suggested that an interchangeable use of the terms violence against women , women abuse and/or violation of women would facilitate women sharing their views and experiences. Findings also point to the development of a set of non-physical, subjective criteria in defining violence against women in Chinese societies.
