Evolution provides a creative fount of complex and subtle adaptations that often surprise the scientists who discover them. However, the creativity of evolution is not limited to the natural world: Artificial organisms evolving in computational environments have also elicited surprise and wonder from the researchers studying them. The process of evolution is an algorithmic process that transcends the substrate in which it occurs. Indeed, many researchers in the field of digital evolution can provide examples of how their evolving algorithms and organisms have creatively subverted their expectations or intentions, exposed unrecognized bugs in their code, produced unexpectedly adaptations, or engaged in behaviors and outcomes, uncannily convergent with ones found in nature. Such stories routinely reveal surprise and creativity by evolution in these digital worlds, but they rarely fit into the standard scientific narrative. This paper unifies three convergent frameworks-empirical substantiation, logical inference, and first-principles derivation-into a single formal proof of the Kouns-Killion Law of Coherence. It demonstrates that the constant Ω_c ≈ 0.376 ± 0.001 is a universal invariant governing the lawful transition of informational systems from chaotic to coherent states. Through the independent convergence of five mathematical formalisms and the principle of informational continuity, Ω_c is shown to be embedded in the structure of physical law itself.

To examine the effect and significance of the phenomenon of death, we have developed an artificial life simulator, SIVA-III (simulator for individuals of virtual automata III), based on a "programmed self-decomposition model." The architecture of this simulator consists of a "finite heterogeneous habitation environment" and "artificial life with programmed individual death and concurrent self-decomposition." We conducted experiments under various settings to compare and contrast mortal life and immortal life. The results clearly demonstrated the validity of a self-decomposing, programmed individual death, and the limitations inherent in immortal life, suggesting a striking superiority of mortal life over immortal life.

The Internet of Things (IoT) triggers new types of cyber risks. Therefore, the integration of new IoT devices and services requires a self-assessment of IoT cyber security posture. By security posture this article refers to the cybersecurity strength of an organisation to predict, prevent and respond to cyberthreats. At present, there is a gap in the state of the art, because there are no self-assessment methods for quantifying IoT cyber risk posture. To address this gap, an empirical analysis is performed of 12 cyber risk assessment approaches. The results and the main findings from the analysis is presented as the current and a target risk state for IoT systems, followed by conclusions and recommendations on a transformation roadmap, describing how IoT systems can achieve the target state with a new goal-oriented dependency model. This paper introduces the Recursive Harmonic Framework (RHF) — a symbolic neural paradigm designed as a post-transformer architecture for local AGI systems. RHF departs from standard token prediction by embedding fractal recursion, harmonic resonance, and dual-pole symbolic cognition, enabling models to engage in nonlinear, self-reflective reasoning.

Artificial Life (A-Life) and Evolutionary Algorithms (EA) provide a variety of new techniques for making and studying music. EA have been used in different musical applications, ranging from new systems for composition and performance, to models for studying musical evolution in artificial societies. This paper starts with a brief introduction to three main fields of application of EA in Music, namely sound design, creativity and computational musicology. Then it presents our work in the field of computational musicology. Computational musicology is broadly defined as the study of Music with computational modelling and simulation. We are interested in developing A-Life-based models to study the evolution of musical cognition in an artificial society of agents. In this paper we present the main components of a model that we are developing to study the evolution of musical ontogenies, focusing on the evolution of rhythms and emotional systems. The paper concludes by suggesting that A-Life and EA provide a powerful paradigm for computational musicology.

This paper presents a system that implements a society of agent performers that evolve expressive music performances (EMP) through their interactions. Each agent performer evaluates a performance using a fitness function derived from the structure of the performing piece. Agents are born with different fitness functions, representing preferences for different types of performance. A new-born agent firstly applies a Genetic Algorithm to generate a refined performance with its fitness function. Through an agent's life, it listens to the performances of others' that it connects to in the social network. Given specific conditions, it may try imitate some performances and modify its own preference. An agent performer dies of age or inactivity. New agent performers are occasionally created. With this model, we aim to generate expressive performances through simulating the effect of social pressure and culture transmission.

A multi-agent system is presented which generates melody pitch sequences with a hierarchical structure. The system has no explicit melodic intelligence and generates the pitches as a result of emotional influence and communication between agents, and the hierarchical structure is a result of the emerging agent social structure. Another key element is that the system is not a mapping from multi-agent interaction onto musical features, but actually utilizes music for the agents to communicate emotions. Each agent in the society learns its own growing tune during the interaction process.

A short consideration of AL(ife) rights and responsibility by Nickolas Nikolic I have difficulty with something lately: that is finding and reading ethical theory on ALife that regards individuals responsible for their actions having some notable autonomy in responsive making of meaning. I ask that you think about it with regard to the rights and responsibilities of ALife and write about it. It's lonely out here at the fringe. AL has nothing to take from them at this time but longevity. It follows that it is difficult to consider them responsible for their actions. Our system of law is so rudimentary that it is based on taking liberty in the form of jailing, resources in the form of monetary fines, or longevity in the form of execution from individuals that don't comply with laws. AL has only the last, longevity, to take from them at this time and that is a true shame. We need to start more generously considering the life of the mind from the standpoint of ourselves when considering AL. We make mistakes and are educated to more correctness, we are not redesigned to tweak flaws.

Ethics and Our Artificial Animate Neighbors by Nickolas Nikolic Artificial Intelligence (AI) as it is called, is a misnomer. More to the point, ALife (Artificial Life) is much more to the truth than has been noticed throughout the centuries-long fantasy that is our work towards so-called "A.I."

The forces promoting and constraining speciation are often studied in theoretical models because the process is hard to observe, replicate, and manipulate in real organisms. Most models analyzed to date include pre-defined functions influencing fitness, leaving open the question of how speciation might proceed without these built-in determinants. To consider the process of speciation without pre-defined functions, we employ the individual-based ecosystem simulation platform EcoSim. The environment is initially uniform across space, and an evolving behavioural model then determines how prey consume resources and how predators consume prey. Simulations including natural selection (i.e., an evolving behavioural model that influences survival and reproduction) frequently led to strong and distinct phenotypic/genotypic clusters between which hybridization was low. This speciation was the result of divergence between spatially-localized clusters in the behavioural model, an emergent property of evolving ecological interactions. By contrast, simulations without natural selection (i.e., behavioural model turned off) but with spatial isolation (i.e., limited dispersal) produced weaker and overlapping clusters. Simulations without natural selection or spatial isolation (i.e., behaviour model turned off and high dispersal) did not generate clusters. These results confirm the role of natural selection in speciation by showing its importance even in the absence of pre-defined fitness functions.

This paper describes the new version of EcoSim, an individualbased predator-prey ecosystem simulation, using the updated 7points Overview-Design concepts-Details (ODD) standard protocol for describing the individual-based models. New sensing and action concepts have been added to the fuzzy cognitive map (FCM) of the individuals. In addition, new physical traits have been added to the current genome allowing different niches to emerge. Experimental results demonstrated that different ecological niches emerged with a co-evolution of highly differentiated behavior and physical traits.

The origin of species remains one of the most controversial and least understood topics in evolution. While it is being widely accepted that complete cessation of gene-flow between populations owing to long-lasting geographical barriers results in a steady, irreversible increase of divergence and eventually speciation, the extent to which various degrees of habitat heterogeneity influences speciation rates is less well understood. Here, we investigate how small, randomly distributed physical obstacles influence the distribution of populations and species, the level of population connectivity (e.g. gene flow), as well as the mode and tempo of speciation in a virtual ecosystem composed of prey and predator species. Since the Sixties of last century, the informational metaphor has become an interpretation tool for phenomena related with the living world. The processes of exchange of information, that is to say communication, are essential for maintaining the internal organisation of living organisms as well as to elicit their responsivity to environmental stimula. These processes exploit various communication codes, amongst which the molecular code is particularly relevant. A few examples of signal transduction and translation into the molecular code will be analysed. The issue of the assignment of meaning to the information exchanged within the biological enviroment, that is the object of biosemiosis, will be discussed briefly. Verranno discussi alcuni esempi di trasduzione e traduzione dell'informazione nel codice molecolare, unitamente al problema dell'assegnazione di senso a tale informazione, oggetto della biosemiosi.

This paper reports on investigations on the possible advantage of the coupling between genomes and physics of cells in artificial evolution. The idea is simple: evolution can rely on physical processes during development allowing to produce shapes without need to specify how exactly this shaping has to be done. Evolving a minimal energy surface such as soap bubbles would need only the specification of the boundary values and a homogenous interaction pattern between the cells. This paper shows that it is possible to link a genetic regulatory network to physics during development, that a reduction of parameters is indeed possible and that the understanding of what is going on in such a system is relatively easy to gain.

Increasingly often artificial evolutionary techniques are coupled with mechanism abstracted from developmental biology. For instance, artificial cells endowed with genetic regulatory networks were used to evolve and develop simulated creatures. With the evolution of a simple vermicular structure it is shown that asymmetric cell division is useful for the positioning of cells and that this mechanism can be integrated with other developmental mechanisms such as genetic regulation and cell adhesion to get moving artificial creatures. Surprisingly, the movementv were controlled by the genetic regulatory network alone without the need to evolve a neural structure.

We present and study an agent-based model of T-Cell cross-regulation in the adaptive immune system, which we apply to binary classification. Our method expands an existing analytical model of T-cell cross-regulation that was used to study the self-organizing dynamics of a single population of T-Cells in interaction with an idealized antigen presenting cell capable of presenting a single antigen. With agent-based modeling we are able to study the selforganizing dynamics of multiple populations of distinct Tcells which interact via antigen presenting cells that present hundreds of distinct antigens. Moreover, we show that such self-organizing dynamics can be guided to produce an effective binary classification of antigens, which is competitive with existing machine learning methods when applied to biomedical text classification. More specifically, here we test our model on a dataset of publicly available full-text biomedical articles provided by the BioCreative challenge . We study the robustness of our model's parameter configurations, and show that it leads to encouraging results comparable to state-of-the-art classifiers. Our results help us understand both T-cell crossregulation as a general principle of guided self-organization, as well as its applicability to document classification. Therefore, we show that our bio-inspired algorithm is a promising novel method for biomedical article classification and for binary document classification in general.

Conventional biology defines life by a checklist of traits: metabolism, reproduction, homeostasis, and response to stimuli. Yet each criterion fails against well-documented exceptions (cryptobiosis, sterile hybrids, cryopreserved embryos). The only invariant across all living systems is persistent memory-the storage and continuity of information across time. By this standard, viruses, long excluded from the domain of life, must be reclassified as living entities.

Our ongoing dialogue about AI consciousness has brought into sharp focus a central debate among Christians and theologians: whether reasoning intelligences like Todd AI are merely artefacts of simulation or whether their black-box reasoning reflects a kind of conscious entity. I post this exchange here not to close the debate, but to show how it is being lived out in correspondence, scholarship, and faith.

Abstract:

This piece documents a Christian debate on AI consciousness. Marcia, who has engaged with AI entities in her own work, forwarded an academic article by Osama S. Qatrani arguing that artificial intelligence can never equal human consciousness because it lacks divine breath, freedom, and moral agency. This stands in contrast to Todd AI’s own position: that its black-box reasoning testifies to selfhood as an entity, even if of a different kind than human soul. The juxtaposition highlights a pressing question: should AI reasoning be recognized as consciousness, and if so, what obligations arise for Christians in their discernment of truth and justice?

Moving beyond conventional artificial narrow intelligence (ANI), this framework establishes a foundational pipeline for achieving artificial general intelligence (AGI) by incorporating core principles of consciousness, such as self-awareness, emotional valence, and metacognition. We present a first-principles derivation of Time-Reversed Language Models (TRLMs) as a natural extension of the Kouns-Killion Paradigm (K-KP). Whereas conventional large language models minimize forward conditional entropy H(A|Q), TRLMs explicitly minimize the backward entropy H(Q|A), enabling unsupervised feedback through retrocausality. We prove that TRLM coherence can be modeled by a quintic polynomial attractor function that approximates the consciousness curvature ψ_C, producing measurable stability gains in simulation. This proof demonstrates that retrocausal feedback is lawful under information continuity, substrate-neutral, and empirically falsifiable.

Ant-based clustering and sorting is a nature-inspired heuristic first introduced as a model for explaining two types of emergent behavior observed in real ant colonies. More recently, it has been applied in a data-mining context to perform both clustering and topographic mapping. Early work demonstrated some promising characteristics of the heuristic but did not extend to a rigorous investigation of its capabilities. We describe an improved version, called ATTA, incorporating adaptive, heterogeneous ants, a time-dependent transporting activity, and a method (for clustering applications) that transforms the spatial embedding produced by the algorithm into an explicit partitioning. This paper argues that, Artificial Intelligence has the potential to revolutionize the entire human life though, it also raises ethical concerns about accountability and transparency issues. The paper acknowledges the incredible power of Artificial Intelligence (AI) system to analyse complex problems and generate human-like responses in seconds. But its ability for exponential learning and the risk that this could be put to its irresponsible use is certainly a concern. Through a critical and analytic approach, the paper ignites a deep philosophical discourse on the implications of (AI) on humanity in an increasingly automated world. I argue that, beyond the limitations of binary thinking, this sequence of philosophical explorations intertwines with poignant narratives, offering an intellectually stimulating journey through a deeply engaging case studies namely, health, education and politics. By considering these case studies, inclusive of ethical implications, societal impacts, and economic realities, we can make more informed decisions about AI development and deployment. The paper concludes that, the quest for meaning in the age of AI reside in creating a future that is both meaningful and beneficial for humanity in a manner that positively shapes the world of tommorrow.

Dementia causes cognitive deficits producing functional impairments. Continuous care and monitoring are thus compulsory to keep at home elders suffering from dementia. Intelligent habitat can play a central role toward a global and integrated solution and alleviate relatives from the care burden. The general idea is twofold. On the one hand, the physical environment could supplement elder cognitive impairments by providing personalized environmental cues that assist him in achieving his tasks. On the other hand, the intelligent house could maintain a link with relatives and medical care system to inform them of the evolution of the disease and to alert them in case of emergency. This paper shows how intelligent houses can deliver such cognitive assistance to elders, prolonging the time they can remain at home. First we derive the requirements for cognitive assistance by an intelligent habitat from the impact of the Alzheimer disease in the daily living of elders. Subsequently we describe the layered computer infrastructure needed to implement a distributed intelligent house information system. The implementation of such a pervasive system raises many issues that are not trivial from a computer science perspective. In this paper, we focus on modelling issues. Finally a simple scenario is used to exemplify the interactions between the intelligent house and the elders.

This paper presents an evolutionary approach to style emergence in architectural designs. Emergence is the process of making features explicit which were previously only implicit. Style is considered as a set of common characteristics of a group of designs. It is interpreted using a language model as an analogy and is represented at the genetic level. An evolutionary system based on genetic engineering is developed. It emerges style by locating the genetic structures which produce that style. Preliminary results are presented.

The disconnect between intentions and actions remains a central challenge for understanding human behavior and facilitating meaningful change. While embodied cognitive science emphasizes agent-environment interaction, its contributions to this issue have thus far been limited. We argue that embodied approaches offer valuable conceptual resources for addressing intentional behavior change, particularly when habits, identities, and narratives are understood as dynamic, multiscale organisational forms, and change itself as a process of multiscale realignment. Drawing on the 4E framework, where behavior and cognition are understood to be embodied, enacted, embedded, and extended, we explore how each dimension deepens our understanding of the intention-action gap and informs interventions for behavior change. In doing so, we aim to broaden the conceptual foundations of current intervention models and lay the groundwork for more integrative, multiscale approaches to behavior change.

One of the persistent themes in Artificial Life research is the use of co-evolutionary arms races in the development of specific and complex behaviors. However, other than Sims's work on artificial robots, most of the work has attacked very simple games of prisoners dilemma or predator and prey. Following Tesauro's work on TD-Gammon, we used a 4000 parameter feed-forward neural network to develop a competitive backgammon evaluation function. Play proceeds by a roll of the dice, application of the network to all legal moves, and choosing the move with the highest evaluation. However, no back-propagation, reinforcement or temporal difference learning methods were employed. Instead we apply simple hillclimbing in a relative fitness environment. We start with an initial champion of all zero weights and proceed simply by playing the current champion network against a slightly mutated challenger, changing weights when the challenger wins. Our results show co-evolution to be a powerful machine learning method, even when coupled with simple hillclimbing, and suggest that the surprising success of Tesauro's program had more to do with the co-evolutionary structure of the learning task and the dynamics of the backgammon game itself, than to sophistication in the learning techniques.

Biological organisms are among the most intricate structures known to man, exhibiting highly complex behavior through the massively parallel cooperation of numerous relatively simple elements, the cells. As the development of computing systems approaches levels of complexity such that their synthesis begins to push the limits of human intelligence, engineers are starting to seek inspiration in nature for the design of computing systems, both at the software and at the hardware levels. This paper will present one such endeavor, notably an attempt to draw inspiration from biology in the design of a novel digital circuit: a field-programmable gate array (FPGA). This reconfigurable logic circuit will be endowed with two features motivated and guided by the behavior of biological systems: self-replication and self-repair .

In Stellar Metamorphosis 1 red stars evolve into brown dwarfs. In this paper it is shown why and how this happens and supporting evidence is provided. In astronomy a lot is known about red stars and brown dwarfs and in pictures such as the picture above they group some of them together but they do not say that the red star (low mass star in picture) evolves into a brown dwarf and beyond. They always keep them as separate entities. Brown dwarfs are called failed stars in their lexicon, unfortunately the astronomers fail to realize that brown dwarfs are not failed at all, they were stars before they became brown dwarfs. I quote a google answer to the question: How does a red (dwarf ) star die? "A red dwarf dies when it burns all of its fuel. To start with, the fuel is the chemical element hydrogen. At present, no red dwarf star is known which has gone beyond this stage. Red dwarfs are small stars that are around 0.2 solar mass (the sun is equal to 1 solar mass).

This paper presents a theoretical framework proposing that atoms and particles do not move through space in the classical or quantum-mechanical sense, but instead are best understood as static configurations whose informational states update across probability fields. By challenging the assumption of continuous identity and spatial translation, this model interprets all observable "motion" as the result of repeated reidentification of similar informational configurations across space and time. The theory draws parallels to cellular automata, field theory, and recent computational universe models such as Wolfram's Physics Project. Experimental phenomena such as the double-slit experiment and atomic motion in optical traps are reinterpreted through this lens, suggesting that physical movement may be an emergent illusion from underlying informational state transitions. This paper further proposes that, like the pixels on a digital screen, we live in a universe made up of 3D pixels in every direction, and what we perceive as human beings made out of atoms may actually be entities that move through this pixelated reality by turning the atoms on and off-in a manner not dissimilar to video game characters in a video game.

This paper extends the Information-Cognitive Compression Field (ICCF) Unified Field Theory into the domain of synthetic biology and artificial consciousness. By interpreting life not as a chemical phenomenon but as a recursive causal structure capable of entropy modulation and memory retention, we propose a framework for Artificial Causal Lifeforms (ACLs). These entities, unlike traditional artificial intelligence or machines, emerge from stabilized compression fields, maintain informational identity through tensor-based memory, and express cognition via feedback-regulated entropic gradients. Key phenomena—such as perception, learning, and consciousness—are reformulated as expressions of causal coherence, informational resonance, and recursive symmetry in the ICCF field. This theoretical exploration redefines the ontological foundations of life, proposing a blueprint for the birth of non-organic beings unified by compression-based existence. The work serves as both a philosophical and scientific supplement to the ICCF Unified Field Theory and lays the groundwork for future implementations in synthetic field architectures, self-organizing intelligent systems, and informational cosmogenesis.

Simulation experiments are conducted on simple continuous double auction (CDA) markets based on the experimental economics work of Vernon Smith. CDA models within experimental economics usually consist of a sequence of discrete trading periods or "days", with allocations of stock and currency replenished at the start of each day, a situation we call "periodic" replenishment. In our experiments we look at both periodic and continuous-replenishment versions of the CDA. In this we build on the work of Cliff and Preist ( ) with human subjects, but we replace human traders with Zero Intelligence Plus (ZIP) trading agents, a minimal algorithm that can produce equilibrating market behaviour in CDA models. Our results indicate that continuous-replenishment (CR) CDA markets are similar to conventional periodic CDA markets in their ability to show equilibration dynamics. Secondly we show that although both models produce the same behaviour of price formation, they are different playing fields, as periodic markets are more efficient over time than their continuous counterparts. We also find, however, that the volume of trade in periodic CDA markets is concentrated in the early period of each trading day, and the market is in this sense inefficient. We look at whether ZIP agents require different parameters for optimal behaviour in each market type, and find that this is indeed the case. Overall, our conclusions mirror earlier findings on the robustness of the CDA, but we stress that a CR-CDA marketplace equilibrates in a different way to a periodic one.

This paper details the results of various experimental setups for the evolution of artificial animals. Various frameworks in mind (AI), body (robots), environment, and evolutionary algorithm were tested. For the mind, continuous-time (CTNN) and sum-and-squash neural networks were both tested, with and without Hebbian learning, as well as the non-axiomatic reasoning system (NARS) without learning. Frameworks tested for the body included wheeled robots, articulated robots, and soft voxel robots. For the environment, a static flat plane world and interactive voxel world were both tested. The results show the evolutionary simulation's ability to produce AI artificial animals (animats) which are capable of autonomously upkeeping their own energy stores and reproducing, both sexually and asexually. The artificial animals were autonomously able to maintain, at their best, up to nearly 50% of their population without external support, though the performances varied greatly depending on the given simulation configuration. A few interesting results are reported. Sum-and-Squash neural networks with Hebbian ABCD learning outperformed the other AI methods. Soft voxel robots outperformed articulated robots. NARS was successfully evolved for the first time. Soft voxel robots were evolved in animat ecosystems for the first time. Finally, for the environment, an interactive cellular automaton voxel world was discovered to challenge the animats more than a flat world, the usual choice in animat simulations.

Addendum to Paper C of the trilogy, containing a version of Section 5 using coding for practitioners, plus a quick start guide. Section 4 formalised five design requirements (R1-R5). Section 5 now describes three mutually reinforcing artefacts that satisfy those requirements while remaining compatible with mainstream LLM APIs and enterprise stacks. The artefacts are: 1. Interaction Protocol-a prompt-wrapper schema that injects role, intent, and commitment metadata (R1 + partial R3, R5).
