El yacimiento de Cortalago es el uno de los más importantes para el estudio de la minería y la metalurgia en época romana. La excavación que se está llevando a cabo actualmente en el yacimiento, de la mano de Atalaya Riotinto Minera, nos ha permitido completar en planta el desarrollo histórico del asentamiento, que ya era conocido por anteriores trabajos en los perfiles y sondeos realizados. En el estado actual de la investigación proponemos un desarrollo cronológico en cinco fases, dentro siempre de la época romana. La fase más antigua, o Fase V, corresponde a una necrópolis que se desarrolla directamente sobre el nivel geológico y que se encuentra aún en proceso de excavación, por lo que no se pueden aportar más datos hasta el momento. La Fase IV vendría representada por recintos metalúrgicos independientes, de planta elipsoidal, que están dotados de un número variable (4-6) estructuras de transformación metalúrgica (hornos) de época republicana, a partir del mediados del s. II a.n.e. Una vez amortizada esta fase de ocupación/operación metalúrgica con una escombrera de escorias y restos de mineral, se construye, en época augustea (s I a.n.e-I d.n.e.), una gran planta de tratamiento de mineral que se formaliza en un edificio provisto de 9 grandes hornos metalúrgicos (Fase III). Este edificio se abandona y se amortiza por un nuevo evento de escombrera (Fase II), formada por potentes paquetes de escoria, mineral, carbones y restos de construcción de los hornos. Sobre esta escombrera, y a partir de época julio-claudia (Fase I), se desarrollará un programa urbanístico que convirtió a este lugar en la principal área administrativa y habitacional de la cuenca minera de Riotinto, el centro minero y metalúrgico conocido en las fuentes latinas como Urium, que perdurará hasta finales del s. II d.n.e., documentándose solo alguna ocupación más tardía, pero con un carácter mucho más limitado y concreto.

The thesis elaborates on the general text on leather girdle purses by Olaf Goubitz published in the book Purses in Pieces from 2007. A deeper analysis of this topic was made possible by personal examination of the artefacts in this Dutch collection. The Dordrecht leather purse collection is one of the most important in Europe thanks to the publication of Olaf Goubitz, but it is not systematically processed according to modern archaeological methods. The thesis addresses the pitfalls of the standard international drawing of leather artefacts when applied to the technical details of the purses and offers a more detailed description of them. A more precise description of individual details should facilitate the comparability of smaller purse fragments from elsewhere in Europe. By comparing the Dordrecht purses with purses from other sites and iconographical sources, the thesis attempts to improve the dating of this collection. The thesis includes a drawn catalogue.

Guided by modern miners of the region the authors track down pre-Inca mining sites in the Southern Nasca Region of Peru. In the hinterlands away from both modern and ancient roads they find a surprising number of small sites serving the pre-Inca industry, principally in the Nasca period. Drawing analogies from modern practice they are able to distinguish the ancient sites dedicated to exploration, extraction or production.

The polymetallic ore intrusion of “Meymand” is situated between three important copper and iron orogeny zones called “Sarcheshmeh”, “Meydook” and “Gol-e Gohar” in the Kerman province, central Iran. The occurrences of polymetallic sulphide intrusions (Cu, Cu+Fe+As, Cu+Au+Fe, Cu+Zn) with various metallic ore compositions are also one of the reasons why this region belongs to the most signi cant areas for the beginning of metallurgy on the Iranian plateau. The main motivation for this research is the characterization of the smelting slags used for metallurgical purposes in Meymand, based on quantitative XRD methods, including the Rietveld phases refining method. Through polarization microscopy, the interpretation of the paragenesis of the phases in the solid is possible, as well as in the fluid state. Nella periferia Sud dell'abitato dell'odierna Gioia Tauro (RC), esattamente lungo il confine naturale che separa il territorio gioiese da quello del Comune di Palmi, in prossimità del ponte autostradale esiste una contrada (il cui nome non compare nella cartografia storica IGM e neppure in alcuni documenti conservati presso l'archivio di stato di Reggio Calabria), nota nel dialetto locale come "I Carcareddri" (Fig. ).

The Douzlākh salt deposit (region: Māhneshān, Zanjān Province, Iran) is unique for its pure and crystal rock salt and was an important supplier of culinary ('table ') salt in Achaemenid, Sassanid and Middle Islamic times. At the same time, the site was of central importance to the economic life of the rural populations in the Talkherud Basin. This article focuses on the question of which strategies were decisive for the exploitation of the salt mountain and how a potential supra-regional interest in the culinary salt was perhaps reciprocally connected with a rural hinterland. This hinterland was recently investigated in greater detail by our ongoing research. Did a resource-scape based on salt develop with specific economic and social strategies and practices around the Douzlākh? And was this development triggered by state or imperial control and demand? These questions are being pursued from a perspective utilising a variety of subjects and methods in archaeology, archaeobiology, archaeometry and geoarchaeology. In addition to a detailed on-site artefact study, several on-and off-site datasets have been collected and analysed within a multidisciplinary framework. This article synthesises the results of a major 12-year project to identify the organisational principles and daily practices within this specific salt-scape. The sensational finds of the Douzlākh salt mummies, along with the generally outstanding preservation of organic ecofacts and artefacts, allow insights into antique lifeworlds that are otherwise hard to come by. The multidisciplinary study of on-and off-site data allows far-reaching insights into interdisciplinary topics, such as the social system, supply and logistics, or the presence of non-local or non-indigenous populations.

Réalisées dans le cadre des activités de l’Équipe d’Explorations Spéléologiques de Villefranche (EESV), les
recherches archéologiques sont soutenues depuis 2005 par la société Arkemine et par la DRAC Auvergne-Rhône-
Alpes. Y consacrant une grande partie de leur temps libre, des amateur(e)s et professionnel(le)s de l’archéologie,
des spéléologues et des naturalistes de l’EESV collaborent et interviennent sur le terrain. Passionnés, ces derniers
connaissent les cavités artificielles des monts du Lyonnais et du Beaujolais. Les recherches sur le terrain ont été
effectuées en collaboration avec d’autres associations et acteurs du patrimoine et de l’environnement (Patrimoine
en Haut Sornin, FRAPNA / FNE). Des laboratoires d’analyse sont aussi régulièrement sollicités pour des analyses
spécifiques (datations absolues, analyses de minerais...) en fonction des découvertes réalisées lors des fouilles
archéologiques. Les vestiges miniers se trouvent sur des terrains privés. Cet article est donc aussi l’occasion de
remercier les propriétaires qui ont autorisé la réalisation des fouilles archéologiques.
Au sein du Lyonnais et du Beaujolais, le patrimoine minier souterrain accessible concerne principalement les
gisements en contexte filonien. Toutefois, d’autres types de gisement ont été exploités, par exemple à Chessy et
Vaux-en-Beaujolais pour le cuivre et la pyrite où à Sainte- Paule pour la houille. La quasi-totalité des vestiges miniers
n’avait avant 2005 jamais fait l’objet d’une inspection à caractère archéologique. Beaucoup de vestiges sont liés à
des phases d’exploitation de la période contemporaine. C’est donc tout naturellement que les recherches se sont
aussi inscrites dans la diachronie en étudiant l’activité minière du Moyen-Âge à l’Ère industrielle. Toutefois, depuis
2020, nous développons nos recherches sur l’exploitation du cuivre associé à des amas stratiformes.
Les territoires des Monts du Lyonnais et du Beaujolais constituent un ensemble géologique dont le sous-sol est
principalement composé de roches métamorphiques et plutoniques. La mise en place des roches plutoniques, du
magma qui va cristalliser en granite après un refroidissement lent, favorise la circulation de fluides hydrothermaux
chargés en éléments chimiques, notamment en métaux. Ces fluides vont pénétrer dans les fracturations, créées par
l’orogénèse hercynienne et la mise en place des plutons, qui traversent les roches environnantes (www.geopark-
beaujolais.com/histoire-geologique.html). En remontant, ces fluides refroidissent et, la pression diminuant, les
éléments chimiques vont cristalliser sous la forme de composés minéraux en colmatant les fissures. Dans l’emprise du
Géoparc Beaujolais, les filons sont principalement constitués de quartz ainsi que de baryte et de fluorine (Mazenot,
1936, p.150). Ils intègrent des éléments plus rares, tels que des minerais métallifères sulfurés, en particulier de la galène,
un sulfure de plomb plus ou moins riche en argent, mais aussi plus rarement des minerais de cuivre et de l’antimoine.
Isolés ou formant des faisceaux, les filons subverticaux situés dans l’emprise du Géoparc Beaujolais ont été exploités
depuis la surface et en profondeur dès le Moyen-Âge. Ils ont ensuite été reconnus aux XVIIIe et début du XIXe siècles.
Après la période révolutionnaire, certains filons ont fait l’objet de permis de recherche et des concessions ont été
attribuées. De nombreuses sources historiques, archives et publications, permettent de documenter une activité
minière attestée dès la fin du Moyen Âge. Dans un premier temps, les filons ont été explorés pour trouver des métaux
non ferreux, en particulier de l’argent et du plomb. Durant l’ère industrielle, des minerais utilisés dans l’industrie
chimique ont principalement été exploités, tels que la baryte et la fluorine. Dans l’emprise du Géoparc Beaujolais
circonscrit au sein du département du Rhône, de nombreux vestiges témoignent donc des activités minières passées.

Die nachfolgende Dokumentation stellt eine Forschungsarbeit dar, deren Erkenntnisstand ausschließlich durch die theoretische Arbeit in sächsischen Archiven aber hauptsächlich im Bergarchiv Freiberg zusammen getragen wurde. Hierbei ist vordergründig der Bestand der sogenannten Zechenregister benutzt worden. Es handelt sich dabei um die gesamte Abrechnung und Dokumentation der Grubenarbeit eines Quartals, die von je einem Register erfasst wird. Die daraus erschlossenen Daten, Fakten und Ereignisse sind mittels Erkenntnissen aus Geländebegehungen und mit den bisherigen wissenschaftlichen Veröffentlichungen aus dem Bereich der Archäologie und Montanforschung abgeglichen und mit in die Dokumentation eingeflossen. Dabei stellt die Dokumentation ausschließlich die Sicht des Verfassers dar und berücksichtigt weder die Ansichten Dritter noch die bisherigen Veröffentlichungen der lokalen heimatkundlichen Geschichtsschreibung. Das Berggebäude selber ist nicht befahrbar. Demzufolge kann zum Zeitpunkt der Entstehung dieser Dokumentation kein Abgleich der im Archiv erarbeiteten Daten mit der realen Situation im untertägigen Bereich des Berggebäudes erfolgen. Die Dokumentation versteht sich somit als nicht endgültig und offen! Daher ist es möglich, bei Erweiterung des derzeitigen Erkenntnisstandes durch den Verfasser sowie auch durch Dritte unter Beachtung der Urheberrechte, die Dokumentation dementsprechend zu aktualisieren.

The Mitterberg Mining District near St. Johann i. Pongau, Salzburg, Austria belongs to one of the most intensively investigated Bronze Age copper production landscapes in the eastern Alpine region. Starting 2006, a new series of prospection and excavation campaigns were initiated, which included, among others, a program of intensified prospection and sampling of the smelting sites. The combination of geomagnetic surveys, systematic coring and sampling of the slag heaps proved to be an effective way to quantify smelting sites, allowing the efficient investigation of a larger area and creating a more detailed view of a complex copper production landscape, without the need of a full excavation of the archaeological site. The study has also highlighted the importance of taking the depositional context into account, in order to gauge the amount of metallurgical debris actually present. When morphology and depositional characteristics of the slag heap were not taken into consideration, there can be a substantial overestimation of slag at the smelting site, which would in turn lead to a gross overestimation of the theoretical metal production output.

Die spannenden und facettenreichen Forschungen am Kropfsberg im Tiroler Unterinntal faszinierten nicht nur die zahlreichen Zuhörer:innen des ersten ÖGUF-Vortrags in Innsbruck, sondern werden auch im vorliegenden Leitartikel genauer präsentiert. Einen Auszug aus den zahlreichen Aktivitäten der ÖGUF sowie Informationen zu zwei neuen Arbeitsgruppen -Geoarchäologie und Forschungsgeschichte -und den dazu gehörigen Tagungen finden Sie in der Rubrik "News". Ein Beitrag der Studierendenvertretung informiert über die 41. IFATA des DASV in Wien. Dass sich Archäolog:innen für Weinkeller interessieren, ist nichts Neues, der Beitrag zu den Mammutfunden von Gobelsberg-Rossgraben widmet sich jedoch einem besonders alten Jahrgang. Ebenfalls ins Reich der Kulinarik entführt uns die archäobotanische Auswertung der Grabungen von Wörterberg. Vom Burgenland ins Ländle bringt uns die Auswertung der römerzeitlichen Ziegelbrennöfen von Feldkirch-Widnau. Topaktuell ist der Beitrag zum römerzeitlichen Massengrab von Wien Simmering. Dieser für das Legionslager Vindobona vermutlich ausschlaggebende und einzigartige Befund ist somit auch für die Geschichte Wiens von großer Bedeutung. Ebenfalls mit Toten befasst sich das Projekt THANADOS. Mit diesem offenen Webportal aus dem Bereich der Digital Humanities wird die archäologische und anthropologische Auswertung von Bestattungen vereinfacht und allgemein zugänglich gemacht. Den schmucken Abschluss der Rubrik "Forum" macht ein Beitrag aus der historischen und alpinen Archäologie zu den Zillertaler "Granatlern". Ein Einblick in das Konzept und die Gestaltung des archäologischen Bereichs der wiedereröffneten Dauerausstellung macht Lust auf einen (erneuten) Besuch des Wien Museums. Berichte zu den interessanten und vor allem vielfältigen Tätigkeiten und Unternehmungen der studentischen Arbeitskreise der ÖGUF finden Sie am Ende des Hefts. Den AK-Sprecher:innen sei an dieser Stelle für ihre Mühen und ihr Engagement herzlich gedankt! Nach drei Doppelausgaben liegt nun wieder eine Einzelausgabe der AÖ vor. This article documents the Late Antique necropoleis in the Smaragdos, a region known in antiquity for its emerald mines. The study analyzes the features of the necropoleis and tombs identified in them within the general context of the funerary practices of the desert communities that lived in the Eastern Desert between the fourth and the seventh centuries CE. Hundreds of these tombs have been identified along the wadis and in the surrounding hills. Unfortunately, it is extremely hard to find any undisturbed tombs, as they have almost all suffered from severe looting. Far better evidence has been recovered since the 19th century from the necropoleis in the Sudanese part of the Eastern Desert, although those have predominantly been royal and elite tombs. The present overview of burial areas and practices in the Smaragdos region of the Egyptian Eastern Desert is based on an archaeological survey conducted by the Sikait Project in the Wadi el-Gemal National Park from 2018 to 2024, which studied more than 800 graves in several necropoleis in this region, mainly from the Late Antique period. It offers one of the most extensive reviews ever conducted of funerary practices in this period in the Eastern Desert.

Potosí, Bolivia, was the world's most significant silver producer for several centuries following discovery by an Indigenous prospector in 1545. Despite tremendous booms and busts, the famous Cerro Rico demanded more human energy than possibly any other early modern quasiindustrial project on earth. We know of nothing like it in China, South Asia, Europe, or Africaor for that matter, in Mexico. Potosi's infamous mita labor draft was fully institutionalized by the early 1570s and it was only fully dismantled at Bolivia's independence in 1825, exactly 200 years ago as of this writing. It has not been that long, in other words, since the mita was outlawed, and yet mita-like practices continue in rural Bolivia today, as do small-scaled mining and refining. Potosí's legacy lives, and Bolivia is still thought of as a mining country in the global imaginary, largely thanks to its Indigenous workers' persistence against long odds.

The article follows the montanist research of the Jeseníky mountain ore districts and the subsequent archaeological research. In the first phase, since the1950s, these were activities accompanying local deposit surveys, they are mostly the part of various scientific research projects in the last two decades.The Andělskohorský, Hornoměstský and Zlatohorský ore fields belonged to the best known areas where many relics of historical mining have been declared as a cultural monument and various forms of their presentation are also being developed here.

This paper examines the dynamics of the Indo-Mediterranean trade networks during the Fatimid Caliphate (909-1171). It highlights the central role of the Fatimids in fostering these crucial commercial connections, contributing to an early form of global economy. The study is particularly timely given the recent launch of the Indo-Mediterranean Initiative (IMI) and the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), which aim to revive ancient trade and cultural links. The research draws on sources such as the Cairo Genizah, which provides details on Fatimid ports and trade with the Indian Ocean and Red Sea , and the Kitab gharā'ib al-funūn ("Book of Curiosities of the Arts"), which includes geographical maps of the regions. It concludes that the Fatimids' strategic geographical position and proactive policies transformed Egypt into a linchpin of long-distance trade.

The prehistoric complex that includes an Early Bronze Age (EBA) site, a settlement from the Late Bronze Age (LBA) – Early Iron Age (EIA), and a necropolis from the Middle Bronze Age (MBA) – LBA/EIA is located in the present day village of Baley, Vidin region, Northwest Bulgaria

Baley necropolis (northwest Bulgaria) is a cremation necropolis from the 2nd millennium BC. Up to 2022, one hundred and sixty-four graves and features related to the mortuary practices were explored. The earliest graves date to the first half of the 2nd millennium BC (Middle Bronze Age), while the youngest features fall in the mid-11th century BC or, the transition to the Early Iron Age. Alongside the continuity in the mortuary practices during the Late Bronze Age, some new elements could be traced as well such as placing of a significant number of ceramic vessels in the graves and the use of large bowls as urns. Furthermore, a gradual transformation in pottery forms and decoration is also to be seen – from globular amphorae to biconical ones and from encrusted to fluted decoration. Problems of population changes and migrations related to the “Bistreţ” phenomenon are also discussed. The social structure of the Late Bronze Age population is argued as well. While some of the graves can be interpreted as material evidence for social differentiation, the possible existence of elite is not be seen (for now) in the necropolis.

This paper examines the production of Late Bronze Age pottery (1480-1150 calBC) from two settlement areas of Ada Tepe, SE Bulgaria, Europe's oldest goldmine. We present the results of an integrated approach that combines, typology, macroscopic fabric examination, thin section petrography, and small-scale analysis by scanning electron microscopy. The data from these analyses are used to investigate the possible sources of potting raw materials, elements of technological practice, and the repertoire of shapes being produced. Our study suggests the presence of potters who used broadly local raw materials to make a wide range of vessel types catering to a variety of needs that the mining community had, from storage to tableware. The pottery is predominantly characterized by silicate-rich metamorphic fabrics across all periods sampled, indicating longestablished paste recipes shared between the two settlement areas. Additionally, we have identified paste recipes that seem to be more chronologically distinct, potentially reflecting the transition towards Iron Age potting practices.

Oktober bis Dezember 1990 wurde von der Außenstelle Overath des Rheini schen Amtes für Bodendenkmalpflege eine Prospektionsmaßnahme durchgeführt. Dabei sollten möglichst alle Bodenbefunde, die auf mittelalterlichen und frühneuzeit lichen Bergbau zurückzuführen sind, wie Pingen, Stollenmundlöcher und Schlacken plätze, erfaßt und dokumentiert werden. Langenberg, seit 1975 Stadtteil von Velbert, liegt im Osten des Kreises Mettmann im rechtsrheinischen Teil des Rheinischen Schiefergebirges. Die Gegend gehört land schaftlich zum Velberter Hügelland und ist durch weite Grünlandflächen mit dazwi schenliegenden Laub-und Nadelholzforsten (vor allem Buche) gekennzeichnet. Dahinter treten die Ackerbauflächen stark zurück. Die Kartiergebiete (Abb. 1) wer den durch die Bachläufe des Hardenbergerbaches und Deilbaches umschlossen, die sich in Langenberg vereinen und der Ruhr entgegenfheßen. Die beiden Kartiergebiete werden von vielen kleinen, meist namenlosen Siefen durchzogen, welche tief einge schnitten die Landschaft lebhaft gliedern und in den Deilbach entwässern. Am geologischen Aufbau des Gebietes bei Velbert-Langenberg sind Sedimentgesteine des Unterund Oberkarbons (Dinant und Namur) beteiligt, die dort ehemals in einem küstennahen Milieu abgelagert worden sind1. Die Schichten des sog. Produkti ven Karbon sind weiter im Norden an der Ruhr aufgeschlossen, daher befinden sich in dem begangenen Gebiet keine Steinkohlenflöze. Gegen Ende des Oberkarbons wurde das Gebiet im Zuge der variszischen Faltung aus dem Meer gehoben und den älteren Faltenketten angegliedert. Durch die erneute Hebung im Tertiär wurde das bereits zu einem Rumpfgebirge erodierte Gebirge erneut überprägt. Zu weiteren Ablagerungen kam es lediglich im Quartär: Bis in den Essener Raum lagerte sich eine jungpleistozäne Lößdecke ab, die auch in dem begangenen Raum an verschiedenen Stellen angetroffen wurde. Sie ist heute von den Hängen herabgeflossen und infolge von Verwitterung tiefgründig entkalkt. 1 Erläuterungen zur geologischen Karte von Preußen und den benachbarten deutschen Ländern. Blatt 2650 Velbert, bearb. von R. BARTLING u. W. Paeckelmann (1928) 6 f. Zahlreiche Verwerfungen durchsetzen die karbonischen Schichten quer zum Strei chen der Falten. In diesen Störungsbereichen2 konnten in großem Umfang Blei-, Schwefel-, Kalzium und kieselsäurereiche Erzlösungen aufsteigen und auskristallisie ren. Es bildeten sich Bleiglanz-und Zinkblende-Lagerstätten, die im Umkreis von Velbert seit dem 1 5. Jahrhundert zu lebhaftem Abbau geführt haben3. Daneben wurde auch Kupferkies und Brauneisenstein abgebaut. Letzterer tritt als zusammenge schwemmtes Verwitterungserz der mesozoisch-alttertiären Landoberfläche in kleinen Karsttaschen und -mulden der Kohlenkalkschichten auf. Brauneisenstein ist gelegent lich auch an die Verwerfungsspalten gebunden (Abb. 2)4. Der den Kohlenkalkschich ten des Unterkarbon aufliegende sog. Hangende Alaunschiefer mit einer Schicht mächtigkeit von mehreren hundert Metern ist im Prospektionsgebiet aufgeschlossen und bildete die Grundlage für den im Velberter Raum betriebenen Alaunschieferberg bau (s. u.). In den bankig ausgebildeten Kalksteinschichten gibt es zudem Steinbrüche für die Bausteingewinnung, während die plattigen Tonschiefer des Karbons sich für eine Dachschieferverarbeitung eigneten5. HISTORISCHE ENTWICKLUNG DES LANGENBERGER RAUMES Wenige verstreut anzutreffende neolithische Funde (Abb. 1) belegen die zeitweilige Anwesenheit des Menschen in der Jungsteinzeit6. Eine Besiedlung in den Metallzeiten und der Römerzeit läßt sich in der Umgebung der Prospektionsgebiete wie überhaupt im ostniederbergischen Hügelland bislang nicht nachweisen7. Erst in der Zeit der mit telalterlichen Landnahme ab dem 9. Jahrhundert setzte eine verstärkte Siedeitätigkeit ein. Einige Orte des ostniederbergischen Höhenlandes werden bereits zu diesem Zeit punkt als in Besitz der Abtei Werden befindlich genannt. Dazu zählt beispielsweise die westlich von Langenberg liegende Bauernschaft Rottberg8. Das nur unweit west lich der Prospektionsgebiete liegende Kuhlendah! ist in einer Aufzeichnung im Liber Major Privilegiorum der Abtei Werden genannt, das nach 868 entstanden ist9. Bis in das 11. Jahrhundert hinein formierten sich die Machtgebiete der einzelnen das Gebiet betreffenden Herrschaften. Während sich der Besitz der Abtei Werden hauptsächlich bis westlich an den Hardenberger Bach erstreckte10, konnten die Herren von Harden-

Die Erforschung der römischen Ziegelei Feldkirch-Widnau (KG Feldkirch, VB Feldkirch) reicht bis in das Jahr 1963 zurück, als drei Schulkinder beim Aushub einer Baugrube einen überwölbten, aus Ziegeln gemauerten Gang entdeckten. Dies erweckte das Interesse von Elmar Vonbank, dem damaligen Direktor des Vorarlberger Landesmuseums (heute: vorarlberg museum), der in zwei jeweils vier Tage dauernden Kampagnen die Strukturen freilegen ließ und den "überwölbten Gang" alsbald als Schürkanal eines Ziegelbrennofens identifizierte. Die Entdeckung des Ofends fand als publizierter Kurzbericht Eingang in die Forschung und in Form handbeschriebener Notizzettel, Zeichnungen und Fotografien sowie zahlreicher Ziegelfragmente in das Depot des vorarlberg museums. Der "archäologische" Akt im Museumsinventar wuchs im Laufe der folgenden Jahrzehnte noch um kleinere Baubeobachtungen im näheren Umfeld an, im Zuge derer stark ziegelhaltige Schichtpakete dokumentiert wurden. Erst 2008 konnte im Rahmen eines weiteren Bauvorhabens, der Errichtung des Bildungszentrums der Arbeiterkammer Vorarlberg, eine großflächige archäologische Untersuchung des Geländes vorgenommen werden. Bei dieser vom Bundesdenkmalamt zusammen mit der späteren Firma Talpa GnbR durchgeführten Maßnahme wurden auf einer Gesamtfläche von 330m² drei weitere Ziegelbrennöfen, eine Schlämmgrube, Grabenanlagen sowie zahlreiche Pfostenlöcher dokumentiert.

Finds of mostly gravelly-sandy, and subordinately sandy-silty sedimentary rocks south of the Bärenlohe woodland near Luhe (Upper Palatinate) can be assigned to the Lower Rotliegend of the Weiden Rotliegend Basin. Petrographic descriptions of the rocks of this unit in the literature are usually brief and therefore rather vague. In addition, hardly any informative illustrations have been published so far. The following presents a selected series of photographs of surface finds and attempts a petrographic description. In addition, this material is compared with collections held by the Bavarian Environment Agency (LfU Bayern) in Hof an der Saale. For a more precise stratigraphic assignment, several possibilities exist. Various reasons support an assignment to the “Obere Roten Konglomerat-Arkosefolge” (“Upper Red Conglomerate-Arkose Sequence”, upper Lower Rotliegend, “Serie V“, lower to middle Permian), but there are also certain similarities with the ”Basalkonglomerat” (“Basal Conglomerate”) of the Weiden Basin (lowermost Lower Rotliegend, ”Serie I”, Upper Carboniferous). The sediment material itself appears to have originated from the basement rocks located further south of the find site.


Funde von zumeist kiesig-sandigen, untergeordnet auch sandig-schluffigen Sedimentiten südlich des Waldstücks Bärenlohe bei Luhe (Oberpfalz) lassen sich dem Unter-Rotliegend des Weidener Rotliegend-Beckens zuordnen. Die petrographischen Beschreibungen der Gesteine dieser Einheit sind in den literarischen Quellen meist knapp gehalten und darum ziemlich vage. Zudem wurden bislang kaum aussagekräftige Bebilderungen dazu publiziert. Im Folgenden wird eine ausgewählte Reihe an Fotos von Lesefunden präsentiert und der Versuch einer petrographischen Beschreibung unternommen. Ergänzend dazu wird dieses Material mit Beständen des Bayerischen Landesamts für Umwelt Bayern (LfU Bayern) in Hof an der Saale verglichen. Für die genauere stratigraphische Einordnung bieten sich mehrere Möglichkeiten an. Verschiedene Gründe sprechen für die Zuordnung zur Oberen Roten Konglomerat-Arkosefolge (höheres Unter-Rotliegend "Serie V", unteres bis mittleres Perm), aber auch mit dem "Basalkonglomerat" des Weiden-Beckens (tiefstes Unter-Rotliegend, "Serie I", Oberkarbon) bestehen gewisse Ähnlichkeiten. Das Sedimentmaterial selbst scheint aus dem weiter südlich der Fundstelle gelegenen Grundgebirge zu stammen.

Bronze is the defining metal of the European Bronze Age and has been at the center of archaeological and science-based research for well over a century. Archaeometallurgical studies have largely focused on determining the geological origin of the constituent metals, copper and tin, and their movement from producer to consumer sites. More recently, the effects of recycling, both temporal and spatial, on the composition of the circulating metal stock have received much attention. Also, discussions of the value and perception of bronze, both as individual objects and as hoarded material, continue to be the focus of scholarly debate. Here, we bring together the sometimes-diverging views of several research groups on these topics in an attempt to find common ground and set out the major directions of the debate, for the benefit of future research. The paper discusses how to determine and interpret the geological provenance of new metal entering the system; the circulation of extant metal across time and space, and how this is seen in changing compositional signatures; and some economic aspects of metal production. These include the role of metal-producing communities within larger economic settings, quantifying the amount of metal present at any one time within a society, and aspects of hoarding, a distinctive European phenomenon that is less prevalent in the Middle Eastern and Asian Bronze Age societies.

En las últimas dos décadas la trayectoria de SNIACE, acrónimo de Sociedad Nacional de Industrias y Aplicaciones de Celulosa Española fundada en 1939, ha sido la crónica de una muerte anunciada. Con cifras millonarias entre pérdidas, sueldos desorbitados, ampliaciones de capital y ayudas públicas sin retorno, lo que hoy queda de SNIACE es una profunda huella en el territorio y sus habitantes, y un área de 600.000 m2 de instalaciones industriales obsoletas y abandonadas que quizás merezcan la consideración de patrimonio industrial.
Atrás queda su época gloriosa en que SNIACE daba empleo a más de 4.000 trabajadores, y ahora toca decidir qué hacer o qué usos dar a este enorme complejo industrial incrustado en el tejido urbano de Torrelavega. Frente a las propuestas más obvias por descontadas –desmantelamiento y comercialización del suelo industrial para centros comerciales y proyectos inmobiliarios–, el presente trabajo propone su restauración y conservación teniendo como referentes dos experiencias similares de éxito: Völklinger-Hütte en Alemania y Parque Fundidora en Monterrey, principal ciudad industrial de México.

La minería andina colonial ha suscitado mucho interés en la historiografía; sin embargo, el aspecto de las técnicas mineras y metalúrgicas ha sido tratado de manera más desigual. Este artículo —parte de una investigación más amplia— pretende, inspirándose en estudios recientes sobre la historia de las técnicas modernas en otros espacios, hacer un trabajo antropológico-histórico de dichas técnicas, enfocándose en la figura del experto minero y metalúrgico en el Alto Perú y el desierto de Atacama entre 1675 y 1775, periodo poco conocido y marcado por el desprecio hacia estos expertos andinos antes de la impactante irrupción de la ciencia europea. De este modo, se prestará un interés especial a las prácticas cotidianas y a sus grados de pericia, así como también a los procesos innovadores, es decir, a las etapas de reflexión, debate, modificación y difusión que hacían posible que el inventor inventase (que se llegase a lo que entendemos por invento). El objetivo de este artículo, por tanto, es presentar nuevos enfoques de trabajo sobre la minería andina colonial.

This article presents a hoard of 27 metal artefacts and fragments of one ceramic vessel from the South Bohemian site of Krtely, dated to the earlier phase of the Late Bronze Age (Br D – Ha A1). Two exceptional phenomena are associated with the hoard. The first is its placement in a burial mound, and the second is the presence of two fragments of a broken miner’s pick, analogous to those found in the salt mines of Hallstatt. In addition to typological-chronological analyses, the article also includes elemental composition and use-wear analyses of the pick. Unique to this find is the reutilization of the pick as a chisel. The hoard also contained a fragment of a cast sword hilt with embedded fragments of other artefacts, examined by X-ray and tomographic analyses. The hoard from Krtely significantly contributes to the ongoing discussion on the role of Bronze Age metal hoards and their potential connections to ritualized behaviour and the spiritual world of that era.

Mineral waters of Vicenza Prealps - “Piccole Dolomiti” area, including the basins of the Agno and Leogra streams (Vicenza province), have been characterized from a geochemical point of view. Twentytwo samples of mineral waters were collected and analyzed for the determination of main cations, anions and some trace constituents. Processing of analytical data allowed us to classify the waters, to identify the geochemical processes that originate them and to simulate the reaction paths of the different groups of waters identified. Statistical analysis highlighted the presence of a population with anomalous carbon dioxide partial pressure which substantially influences the chemical composition of the mineral waters of interest. PhreeqcI, a computer program for a wide variety of aqueous geochemical calculations, was used to simulate: (i) the processes generating the alkaline waters of Recoaro Terme “external sources” and Regina, Reale, Margherita and Iolanda sources which interact with volcanic rocks of different composition, (ii) the evolutionary paths of the dedolomitization process which, starting from waters with a bicarbonate-calcium composition, gives rise to waters with a sulphate-calcium composition with high magnesium concentrations such as those of the Lelia, Amara, Lorgna, and Nuova sources (“internal sources” of Recoaro Terme), (iii) the processes originating the acidic waters of the Virgiliana and Catulliana sources and the weakly acidic waters of the Felsinea source. Finally, based on geological and geochemical data collected, a hydrogeological scheme of the possible supply circuits of different water groups was developed.

In this context, the settlement of Berikldeebi in Shida Kartli stands out as particularly
significant. Its extensive size and multi-layered structure make it a crucial site in the
archaeology of the Caucasus and Western Asia. Remarkably, Beriklde preserves
evidence of nearly 3,000 years of continuous habitation.

People use domestic material culture to create an image of themselves that they project to others who live in, or visit, their homes. This was as true in the Spanish colonial city as it is in any city today. If, therefore, we wish to investigate status and ethnicity in the Spanish colonies, domestic material culture is an excellent source of information on how people imagined their own place, and that of others, in society. The first step toward this is the reconstruction of the material culture of urban colonial houses. There are two main bodies of evidence available to accomplish this. The first is descriptions of household goods in the notarial archives of the colonies, and the second is the physical remains of household refuse found in archaeological contexts in cities. Each body of evidence can make unique contributions to our understanding of social relations in the colonial city, but each also has unique limitations. Despite an early surge in copper-ore mining during the sixth and fifth millennia BC (the 'boom'), evidence for metal production in the Balkans dwindles in the fourth millennium (the 'bust'). Here, the authors present new evidence for copper mining at Curak in southwest Serbia, c. 3800 cal BC, during this apparent downturn. By integrating field surveys, excavations and provenance analyses, they explore activity at the site, challenging the visibility bias in the archaeological record of this region for this key period. Rather than a societal collapse, the authors argue, fewer artefacts may instead reflect a widening Balkan sphere of influence.

Seit dem Mittelalter waren es Kloster- und Ritterorden, Bischöfe, hohe Adelige und Städte, die so ihre Landgüter dokumentierten. Nur sie verfügten über großen, rentablen Grundbesitz. Frühe Exemplare in Form von Schriftrollen stammen aus dem Früh- und Hochmittelalter. Flussauen und ihre Nutzung bilden Urbare wie das Kinzigtäler Urbar von 1491-1500 durch direkte Informationen zur Umwelt und zur Landnutzung am Fluss topografisch ab.
