This paper will examine the business model and discuss recommendations of best practices for integrating the gig economy as a solution to workforce issues, improving global economic policies, entrepreneurial growth and society. Technology, demand, and location are environmental factors that we analyzed. The positive and negative contributions that entrepreneurs have on this economy are outlined, as well. Throughout the research, the achievement of understanding what the gig economy is and how it is shaping the future is a key focus. The conclusion is made of whether the gig economy is something that is aiding in progression or if it is hindering the development of businesses already established. Practical implications-This study offers several recommendations to help sharing economy platforms improve their processes and communication to encourage a greater number of consumers to switch roles and become providers. These recommendations address two aspects: (1) encouraging consumers to switch roles and become providers (i.e. acquisition) and following this (2) encouraging providers to continue to perform that role (i.e. retention). Originality/value-Much research has investigated why users become consumers (e.g. Airbnb guests) or providers (e.g. Airbnb hosts) in the sharing economy. However, research to date has not fully embraced the twosided nature of the sharing economy. Therefore, this is the first paper to explore why and how consumers switch roles and become providers in the sharing economy, and how this helps enrich self-determination theory.

Purpose-Technological developments and new customer expectations of immediacy have driven businesses to adopt on-demand service models. The purpose of this paper is to study the characteristics of a range of on-demand services in order to better understand the meaning of "on-demand" and its implications for service management. This enables the on-demand service logic to be applied to other service contexts, where it may add value for customers. Design/methodology/approach-The study starts with a focused literature review and continues with a multiple case study methodology, as the on-demand service concept is in the early stages of theory development. Seven cases were studied, based on a maximum variation sampling strategy. Findings-The results show that on-demand services are characterized by three interrelated characteristics: being highly available, responsive and scalable. Analysis further reveals that on-demand services display differences within the conceptual boundaries of these characteristics, i.e. they vary in terms of their availability, responsiveness and scalability. Originality/value-Drawing on these findings, the study contributes to the service literature by being the first to specifically conceptualize and define the on-demand services concept and reveal three key characteristics that clarify the distinctive nature of this service type. Accordingly, on-demand services are clearly differentiated from other services. Additionally, the paper discusses the variety within on-demand services and develops an on-demand service continuum that gives detailed insights into the conceptual variations within such services.

The 'sharing economy' is in the process of transforming numerous industries. Among these, the hotel sector is especially vulnerable to the strategic disruption that sharing platforms present. Companies such as Airbnb represent the epitome of this threat. This paper sets out to achieve two fundamental research objectives. First, it develops a set of exploratory research propositions based on a qualitative application of transaction cost theory (TCT) to the emergence of sharing platforms. Second, it offers specific strategic and tactical recommendations for the hotel industry based on the TCT analysis referred to above. The paper suggests that, in revising their business models to cope with the new competitive challenges posed by sharing platforms, hotel chains can leverage their superior capacity to deal with three key features of transactions drawn from TCT (frequency, uncertainty and asset specificity) and develop what this paper terms 'integrated platforms'. By employing the TCT lens to understand the emergence of sharing platforms, this is the first study to systematically develop a theoretically grounded approach to understanding how transaction features impact the emergence of sharing platforms, and it hence has clear implications for numerous industries being impacted by these developments, not least the hotel industry.

Technology has been changing the way we consume and relate with goods. Sharing economy is a broad term that includes those who simply want to share what they have, without financial gain, from those who gain access to their goods and services with financial purposes. For the second group, P2P (peer-to-peer) platforms have become a great force. If we think that sharing economy is an important issue, we must review the regulatory and work-related aspects that give to these companies an unfair advantage over established competitors. This study wants to investigate the phenomenon of the sharing economy, the regulatory impacts that platforms have generated in the workforce and understand some solutions that the public agents have been working. During our research we noted that the academic production in Brazil about sharing economics is scarce. We identified the main impacts that occurred in the precariousness of work, in the attempt to regulate the urban space and the creation of new rates and forms of monitoring P2P platforms. A economia do compartilhamento é um termo abrangente que, tanto engloba aqueles que querem simplesmente compartilhar o que têm, sem ganhos financeiros, daqueles que provêm acesso aos seus bens e serviços com objetivos pecuniários. No segundo grupo, as grandes plataformas P2P (do inglês peer-to-peer, que significa par a par) têm se tornado o seu grande expoente. Ao entender que a economia do compartilhamento é importante, deve-se revisar os aspectos regulatórios e relacionados ao trabalho que hoje fazem com que essas empresas, no exercício das suas atividades, ganhem uma injusta vantagem sobre seus concorrentes já estabelecidos. Este estudo tem como objetivo investigar, dentro do fenômeno da economia do compartilhamento, quais são os impactos regulatórios que as plataformas têm gerado na força de trabalho e nos seus setores de atuação, além de pontuar algumas soluções que os agentes públicos têm proposto. Nota-se pela pesquisa, que a produção acadêmica no Brasil sobre economia do compartilhamento é escassa. Identificou-se que os principais impactos ocorrem na precarização do trabalho, na tentativa de regulação do espaço urbano e na criação de novas taxas e formas de monitoramento sobre as plataformas P2P.
