A Tribute to Teachers

১১ মে সকাল ৮ টার একটু আগে বা পরে মাগুরা শহরের পারনান্দুলিয়ায় এক মর্মান্তিক সড়ক দুর্ঘটনায় যে মানুষটি তাঁর মহান রবের কাছে পাড়ি জমালেন, তিনি মা, তিন কন্যা, এক পুত্র সন্তান এবং স্ত্রীসহ দলমত নির্বিশেষে অসংখ্য গুণগ্রাহী মানুষ রেখে গেছেন প্রফেসর ড. খোন্দকার আবু নঈম মুহাম্মদ আব্দুল্লাহ জাহাঙ্গীর।

তিনি ছিলেন দেশের এক বড় সংখ্যক দ্বীনপ্রিয় মানুষের প্রিয় শাইখ, দ্বীনের মহান শিক্ষক। ঘটনার দিন বিকেলে তাঁর প্রিয় প্রতিষ্ঠান আস-সুন্নাহ ট্রাস্ট্রের আঙ্গিনায় (যা তাঁর বাড়ির আঙ্গিনাও) হাজির হয়ে দেখলাম, সেখানে লোক-লোকারণ্য। তাদের কেউ ফুফিয়ে কাঁদছেন, কারো চোখ দিয়ে নীরবে পানি ঝরছে, আবার অনেকেই ছোট ছোট দলে বসে বলছেন- এ কী হলো, আমরা এখন কার কাছে যাবো? আর সকলেই অধীর আগ্রহে শেষ দেখার জন্য অপেক্ষা করছেন, দেশের নানা স্থান থেকে মানুষেরা আসছেন জানাযায় অংশগ্রহণের জন্য। বর্তমান সময়ে একজন মানুষের জন্য এমনটি সচারচর চোখে পড়ে না। জ্ঞানচর্চা এবং দাওয়াহর কাজে নিবেদিত এই ক্ষণজন্মা মানুষটির জন্ম ১ ফেব্রুয়ারি ১৯৬১, ঝিনাইদহ জেলার এক নিভৃত গ্রামে।

একজন সরলপ্রাণ স্কুল শিক্ষকের একমাত্র পুত্র সন্তান পড়ালেখা করেছেন স্থানীয় মাদরাসাসহ ঢাকা আলিয়া মাদরাসা থেকে কামিল (হাদীস, ১৯৭৯) এবং বিশ্বখ্যাত ইমাম মুহাম্মদ ইবনে সউদ ইসলামী বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়, রিয়াদ থেকে অনার্স, মাস্টার্স এবং পিএইচডি ডিগ্রী অর্জন করেন। অবশ্য তাঁর একমাত্র পুত্র সন্তান উসামা সেখানেই স্নাতক শ্রেণীতে পড়ালেখা করছে। তিনি সেপ্টেম্বর ১৯৯৮ সাল থেকে ইসলামী বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় কুষ্টিয়াতে আল-হাদীস এন্ড ইসলামিক স্টাডিজ বিভাগে শিক্ষকতায় নিয়োজিত। ইসলামের বিভিন্ন বিষয়ে ইংরেজি, বাংলা এবং আরবী ভাষায় প্রায় ৩০টি মৌলিক গ্রন্থ এবং ৪০ টির অধিক গবেষণা প্রবন্ধ দেশে-বিদেশে প্রকাশিত হয়েছে। তিনি সমকালীন জ্ঞান জগতের এক বড় দিকপাল ছিলেন, যা শুধু বাংলাদেশের জন্যই নয়, বরং বর্তমান বিশ্ব পরিসরেই তা প্রযোজ্য। অত্যন্ত এ মেধাবী মানুষটি কুরআনে হাফেজও ছিলেন।

Professor K.V. Raman (1934-2024) was a distinguished historian and archaeologist, who  discovered many important archaeological sites and won the appreciation of his superiors. He worked at ASI, became a superintending Archaeologist and then he joined the Madras University as Professor and Head of the Department of Archaeology and served there till his retirement. He authored many books and was honoured with awards.

The Association for Humanistic Psychology (AHP) mourns the "transition" of a very dear soul, Dr. Stan Charnofsky. And, while his transition is a tremendous loss to his family, friends, and colleagues, we also want to honor and celebrate a life well-lived. As a former AHP president, Stan provided outstanding leadership. Upon his passing, he also held the distinction of being the longest-serving AHP board member. He was very much cherished and highly respected by all board members throughout his long, dedicated and remarkable service to AHP and its members. Stan was an extraordinary person. He was truly a "gift," not only to those who had the privilege to know him and to be in his presence, but also a gift to society and to the world. Through his teaching, writings, and counseling practice, he embodied what it means to be "authentically human" toward "the other" in society and in the world. In championing humanistic psychology, he also served as a "mirror" for what it means to respect and honor human dignity and worth, as well as to value the power of free will and choice.

Homage to Professor Jibril Isa Diso: A Symbol of Resilience and Wisdom

In the hallowed halls of academia, rare souls leave ineradicable marks on the hearts and minds of those they touch. Today, with full submission to the will of Allah, we mourn the loss of such a luminary, Professor Jibril Isa Diso, the first blind professor in Nigeria. A symbol of hope of resilience and wisdom, Professor Jibril's journey from Tudun Maliki School for Special Needs to the esteemed Department of Special Education at Bayero University Kano epitomizes the triumph of the human spirit.

Born in Gwale, Kano State, Professor Jibril's life was a testament to the power of determination and the boundless potential that lies within each of us, regardless of our physical limitations. His early years at Tudun Maliki School for Special Needs were marked by an unwavering pursuit of knowledge, a journey that saw him rise above challenges with an indomitable will and an insatiable thirst for learning.

Joining Bayero University Kano in 1994, Jibril's academic voyage was nothing short of extraordinary. In 2019, he shattered the glass ceiling to become Nigeria's first visually impaired professor, a milestone that echoed far beyond the walls of the university. His ascent was not merely a personal triumph but a symbol of hope and inspiration for countless individuals living with special needs. His rich profile served as a roadmap for others, illustrating that disability is not a barrier but a unique facet of one's identity that can be embraced and celebrated.

Professor Jibril Isa Diso's legacy is marked by perseverance, intellectual brilliance, and dedication to societal betterment. As a role model to all, he demonstrated that true sight lies in the heart and mind. His journey inspires us to break barriers, seek knowledge, and champion inclusivity. Though he has passed, his enduring light and wisdom continue to guide and inspire countless others in Nigerian academia and beyond.

O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him and give him strength and pardon him.

The world of twin research and the medical specialty of Obstetrics and Gynecology have lost a giant. Dr Louis G. Keith passed away on July 6, 2014 at the age of 79. Always full of optimism and energy, and considered indefatigable by friends and family, Dr Louis Keith returned from one of his many world lecture tours in June of this year and after two days of feeling tired received a surprise diagnosis of an occult Stage 4 kidney cancer. He died comfortably at home 2 weeks later surrounded by family and friends. His practical and elegant charm was intact to the end, as he counseled those close to himnotto be sad, saying, ‘We should all celebrate that I have been fortunate to have the most amazing life imaginable.’

La presente contribución reconstruye la historia de las “Academias” del Seminario San José de La Plata, talleres complementarios que, como recurso pedagógico de educación integral, alentaban el crecimiento en “virtud y letras” de los estudiantes, inspirados en la Ratio Studiorum de la Compañía de Jesús y su praxis multisecular. Se analiza el estilo propio que se perfiló en la institución platense y el aporte de los académicos, alumnos y profesores, cuyo relevamiento y contextualización nos ofrece pistas importantes para profundizar en los métodos, acentos y centros de interés de la formación sacerdotal de la primera mitad del siglo XX en nuestra región.  

Abstract: In this short note it is shown that Fernando Campello, PhD, does not obey the Peano axioms for arithmetic counting over the natural set. It is also shown that any infinite researcher is isomorphic to F. Campello.

Résumé: Dans cette courte note, on montre que Fernando Campello, PhD, n'obéit guère à l'axiome du comptage. On montre également que tout chercheur infini est isomorphe à F. Campello.

This piece of work is meant to recognize Manuel Acién Almansa's career and contribution to the History of al-Andalus through my own academic career and the development of the archeology of Al-Andalus along the last decades. His writings set out a method of understanding and explaining the history of Al-Andalus in the framework of a growing and really dynamic discipline. This work reflects the academic and intellectual atmosphere where his contributions were developed and reexamines the meaning of his life's work together with its influence on the knowledge of the eastern areas of the Iberian Peninsula.

Este trabajo quiere reconocer la trayectoria y aportación a la historia de al-Andalus de Manuel Acién Almansa, a través de mi propia trayectoria académica y del desarrollo de la arqueología de Al-Andalus en estas últi-mas décadas. Su trabajos plantearon una manera de entender y explicar la historia de al-Andalus en el marco de una disciplina en formación y muy dinámica. Se refleja el ambiente intelectual y académico en el que se gestaron dichas aportaciones y se repasa el significado de su obra y su influencia en los territorios orientales de la Península Ibérica.

LOS CATÓLICOS EN LA UNIVERSIDAD: MONSEÑOR DERISI Y LA UCA 1 RODRÍGUEZ, Laura Graciela (CONICET/UNLP/UNGS) Resumen La fundación de la Universidad Católica Argentina (UCA) en los años de 1950 marcó el comienzo de la etapa de privatización de la educación superior argentina, que desde el siglo XIX estaba en manos del Estado nacional. Uno de los principales ideólogos de la UCA fue el filósofo tomista Octavio Nicolás Derisi que resultó designado rector entre 1958 y 1980. Las universidades católicas creadas en América Latina tenían tradiciones distintas en función de su relación con las estructuras eclesiásticas nacionales y de su filiación dentro del arco de las diferentes órdenes religiosas. En este artículo intentaremos caracterizar las particularidades que distinguieron a la UCA analizando, por un lado, la trayectoria de monseñor Derisi hasta que fue designado rector y por el otro, sus nociones sobre la universidad mientras estuvo en la gestión.

was a rare human being. He was a confluence of many identities and qualities that one can have in a creative person. A concert artist, a composer, a director, a writer and a teacher resided harmoniously within him. I principally knew him as a teacher. The memory of his very first class with us in FTII in 1975 is still as fresh as it can be. He set up an illuminating perspective of looking at music in the first class itself. He played to us excerpts of Khayal in Lalit by Amir Khan, Beethoven's 5 th symphony and Madan Mohan's Teri akhon ke siwa duniya mein rakha kya hain, explaining briefly the musical form used in each composition. He asked us to open our ears and minds to accept the diversity of music, going beyond our conditioning and personal preferences. He also taught us to sensitize ourselves to various forms of music. He said that all forms of music are valid in their own context and asked us to refrain from ascribing certain forms to be automatically superior to the others. It was an exhilarating experience.
