Monitoring the ?Enlaces? educational computer network

The general objective of the work we discuss here is to generate evidence-based knowledge that can help Plan Ceibal make more informed decisions in their upcoming strategies. The idea is to design a conceptual framework to be used for conducting advanced analysis of educational-system datasets to better understand students’ and teachers’ online teaching and learning practices throughout different virtual learning environments. This work provides an overview of a unique national-scale education and technology monitoring system to be built in Uruguay. Different explorations are being conducted to adopt alternative metrics to monitor learning regardless of where it takes place. This work aims to provide effective information tools for that purpose.

We present our latest study on monitoring and analyzing the behavior of the LSBU (London South Bank University) data network traffic as well as identifying and understanding the usage of http traffic, mail traffic and overall traffic. This analysis of the network activity allows us to calculate accurately the importance of the network traffic characteristics, on a continuous basis, which can identify the data traffic patterns on the overall gateway and highlight the end-to-end performance of the network path. In this paper, the PRTG network monitoring tool (Paessler AG, Germany) has been chosen as this provides the capabilities of SNMP, port utilisation as well as sFlow. The objectives of the study are to point out the impact of the LSBU network performance and its congestions current state; to predict the future data network traffic and congestions; to focus on the usage of mail against the mostly used protocol such as http and https; to identify the venerability of the network, due to high usage in particular time of the day; and to check the capacity usage of the current resources to maximize performance and network utilization.

School networking is increasingly important in a globalised world, where schools themselves can be actors on an international stage. This article builds on the activities and experience of the longest established European initiative in this area, European Schoolnet (EUN), a network of 31 Ministries of Education. First, we offer an introduction covering school networks. We then describe the case of European Schoolnet, its history, role, and relationship with other school networks in the world. We then describe the underlying structure of EUN school networks and their basic characteristics. Using these basic characteristics as a framework, we consider a number of eTwinning, European Schoolnet networks: Network of Innovative Schools (ENIS) and myEUROPE. Last, we identify key features of network literacy, potential future trends in school networks, and areas where further research is needed in this field, and offer some recommendations.

The National Mission on Education through ICT approved by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) in 2009, is expected to leverage the potential of ICT, in providing high quality personalized and interactive knowledge modules over the internet for all the learners in higher education institutions in ‘Any-time, Any-where mode.’ The government is obviously trying to give a new direction to the formal nature of our education system. However at an informal level there is already a sizeable student community that has internet access and computer literacy. In fact these sections of the students are well versed in using the new internet enabled technologies. But so far, very minimal efforts have been made to reach out to these students through online resources. Commercial social networking websites, online groups or virtual communities used by students, already has a potential yet to be trapped by the institutions. The paper discusses about the pedagogical values of these social networking technologies.

Characterization of websites visited at Chilean k-12 schools The purpose of this study, funded by the Ministry of Education, was to characterize the use of the (WWW) by Chilean K-12 public schools. It reports the sites, type of sites and the amount of visits for each one. The study was conducted on a stratified sample of 69 schools of 3 different regions of the country monitoring all the computers with Internet connection. Snoop-ware software that sent a daily log of all accessed URLs was used to gather data. So far most studies conducted in the use of the WWW on education use a user-centric measurements or server-centric measurements, therefore this study offers a new approach to the problem. Data was collected during 2 months and the 2,900 most visited websites were analyzed and classified, corresponding to 95 % of all visited websites. The UNESCO Institute for Information Technologies in Education (IITE) initiated and began in 1999 the fulfilment of the project "Internet in Education". The goal of the project is to research the current state of the problems in the use of the Internet in Education and the development on this basis of an information system, whilst accumulating data in the domain. This work is conducted within the framework of the collaborative project with CII UNESCO Sector (29/C5, 04045) and in co-operation with "University Knowledge Networks" corporation (UNICOR, Russia).

Educational networks and portals are a formation of thematically gathered data on the web. Structure of national educational networks and portals depends on environment of their origin. In the paper, selected educational networks are analysed according to the following criteria: content-services, navigation, search, user interface, help, credibility, validity and target groups. The criteria were identified by a group of experts and final users (students and teachers) on the basis of web survey. The importance of criteria was articulated by using the Analytical Hierarchical Method and program Saaty. For the evaluation was selected Slovene National Educational Network (SIO) as well as educational networks of Canada, Ireland, United Kingdom, Europe, Germany, Africa, Australia and America. Based on the results of the comparative analysis a concept and guidelines for improvements of our national educational network SIO were prepared.
