First record of three species of Pythium from Moroccan waters

As in the case of earlier studies, reports of zoosporic fungi are restricted to Synchytrium, Physoderma, and Peronospora. A few German workers studied zoosporic fungi from arctic soils. "Arctic" is too broadly interpreted in their reports. Most soil samples labeled arctic (i.e. from Lapland and Iceland) were probably subarctic soils in the sense of Tedrow (1970). Also high elevation sites in Lapland would best be referred to as alpine. Harder (1954) examined six soil collections from Spitsbergen. He recovered Olpidiunz pendulum Zopf in a sample from a Dupontia moor near Longyearbyen and Nowakowskiella elegans (Nowak.) Schroeter in a sample from a Poa meadow. Only 33y0 of the sites yielded fungi. Gaertner (1954) also surveyed six soil collections from Spitsbergen and he found the same organisms as Harder. In addition he found several Pythium species. Hohnk (1960) collected 10 samples across a beach along King Frederik VI Coast, Greenland at about 63" N. lat. Five of the samples came from the emergent portion of the beach and four from the submerged portion. Every collection yielded at least one species. Among the species found are Saprolegnia sp., Thraustochytrium proliferum Sparrow, Sapromyces elongatus (Cornu) Coker, Apodachlya brachynema (Hildebrand) Pringsheim, Pythium monospermum Pringsheim, P. graminicolum var.

This study extends our knowledge of the diversity of marine fungi from Saudi Arabia, which is virtually unknown. Thirty-seven fungi (28 ascomycetes, eight asexual fungi, and one basidiomycete) were recorded from 457 samples of driftwood and intertidal decayed wood of Avicennia marina collected from three sites along the Red Sea coast of Saudi Arabia. The three sites include two mangrove sites, namely: Yanbu and Farasan Island, while the third site is a sandy shore nearby Yanbu city. Thirty-one fungi were new records for Saudi Arabia. Swampomyces triseptatus is the only species common to the three sites. The recorded marine fungi were latitudinally distributed with fungi recorded from Yanbu (subtropical site) largely different from those at Farasan Island mangrove (tropical site) with only six common fungi recorded. Amarenographium solium was the most common fungus at Yanbu mangrove, while Lineolata rhizophorae dominated the fungal community at Farasan Island mangrove. Swampomyces armeniacus was commonly recorded at the two mangrove sites. Torpedospora radiata was the most common species recorded from driftwood samples collected at Yanbu beach. A new collection of Diatrypasimilis australiensis enabled us to make a detailed morphological study of the fungus. Mycelia with chlamydospores were isolated from the samples and subsequently sequenced, and they grouped in the Corollospora clade with various degrees of confidence, but did not sporulate on natural material or in culture.

Diversity

During a survey of aquatic fungi from Anzali Lagoon in Iran, several fungal specimens were isolated from freshwater habitats. Morphological evidence and comparing sequencing based on rDNA (ITS and LSU) and protein-coding genes (TEF1 and TUB2) showed that some isolates belong to undescribed fungal species. These isolates belong to Arthrobotrys and Sarocladium, two ascomycetes genera. Arthrobotrys hyrcanus, sp. nov., differs from closely related species such as A. dianchiensis by its larger conidia and septation of primary conidia. Sarocladium pseudokiliense, sp. nov., was similar to S. kiliense, but distinguished by its conidial shape and the absence of adelophialides and chlamydospores. Morphological descriptions, illustrations and multilocus phylogenetic analysis for both new species are provided.

During the course of an investigation on the Pythiaceous oomycetes occurring in the Burgundian vineyards, some species of Pythium possessing mainly hypogynous antheridia were found. These had been classified as oomycetes belonging to the ''Pythium rostratum'' group for a long time. Three of these isolates, having similar structures and growth, are very closely related to a recently described species, Pythium bifurcatum Paul. A close look at these, however, underlines some fundamental differences with the latter. Not all of them produce zoospores but have very large sporangia. The type specimen is F-1200 (B 76a) which is a medium-slow growing saprophyte. The sequence of the ITS region of the rDNA also shows a very close relationship with P. bifurcatum. On the basis of morphological and molecular analysis, we now describe this species as Pythium longisporangium sp. nov. Morphological features of this new species, the sequences of the ITS region of its nuclear ribosomal DNA, and its comparison with related species are discussed.

Aquatic filamentous fungi were surveyed from two brackish and two saline lakes in Egypt. Ninety-seven fungi (40 ascomycetes, 55 anamorphic fungi and 2 basidiomycetes) were identified from 764 fungal collections recorded from 545 samples collected from Lakes Edku, Marriott, Burullus and Quaron. Of these, 70 are new records for Egypt. This study represents the first report of aquatic fungi from the four lakes. Fungal communities in the four lakes were markedly different. Common fungi recorded at the four lakes were: Periconia prolifica (21.7%), Clavatospora bulbosa (12.8%), Cirrenalia basiminuta (12.7%), Panorbis viscosus (6%) and Ceriosporopsis halima (6%). Specious genera were: Cirrenalia (8 species), Phoma (8 species), Aniptodera (8 species), Achaetomium (6 species), Pleospora (4 species) and Zalerion (3 species). Higher fungal diversity was recorded from the two brackish lakes than those recorded from the saline lakes. In general, there was a decrease in fungal diversity with increasing salinity. Anamorphic fungi dominated the mycobiota at the four lakes and this is in harmony with the published data.

One hundred and eleven identified and seven unidentified species in addition to 5 varieties belonging to forty-three aquatic fungal genera were recovered from 452 soil samples collected randomly from different localities in Nile Delta and Suez canal regions including eleven governorates. The investigated soil samples were collected seasonally during the period from autumn 1990 to summer 1991 (1 13 samples each season). The richest season (85 identified and 5 unidentified species in addition to 2 varieties) in aquatic fungi was the winter season (10.0-15.5 "C) whereas the poorest (32 identified and 5 unidentified species in addition to one variety) was summer (24.0-27.5 "C). The richest soil samples in aquatic fungi were those of low or moderate temperature seasons, high contents of organic matter and considerably poor in total soluble salts. The pH value did not show any regular seasonal variation and did not exhibit any considerable influence on fungal populations. Some aquatic fungal genera and species were disappeared completely in certain seasons and vice versa. The most dominant aquatic fungal genera were Pythium, Allomyces, Aqualinderella and Nowakowskiella. The commonest aquatic fungal species were Allomyces anomalus, Aqualinderella fermentans, Nowakowskiella elegans, Blastocladiopsis parva and Dictyuchus sterilis. Pythium catenulatum, P. diclinum and P. paroecandrum, as well as asexual forms with filamentous sporangia were isolated from irrigation water in the Poniente region of Almería (south-eastern Spain). The taxonomic and morphological details of these fungal isolates are described. P. catenulatum and P. diclinum are new reports to Spain.

We monitored the dominance and species diversity of fungi in hypersaline water bodies and saline depressions in Kuwait in the period February-October, 2007. There were considerable variations in total numbers and species diversity in concert with salinity variation. Among the most dominant isolates in high salinity water were several Cladosporium spp. and two moderately halophilic Acremonium spp. Several Alternaria-like strains were frequently found; they had various morphologies, but with identical ITS-5.8-ITS2 DNA sequences. Halophilic Cladosporium spp. and an undescribed Sporomiella sp. had best growth in 5% NaCl solutions.
